Nestled in the hills overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Finca Buen Pais is a 55 acre private reserve with an infinity-edge pool, a natural waterfall, wildlife, birds, and much more.
Our rental casita, newly constructed in 2007, is a charming, fully equipped home with a spacious veranda from which the sunset can be enjoyed each evening. It has one bedroom, as well as a sofa bed in the living room and sleeps 2-4. The bedroom has a queen bed and a built-in reading nook, which can also be used as a bed for a small child. French doors from both the living room and the bedroom lead to the veranda which runs across the entire front of the casita. The house and veranda are fully tiled and nicely furnished, including a hammock and rocking chairs. The tiled bathroom features a private outdoor shower. The casita enjoys stunning ocean and valley views in every direction. Guests have access to the distinctive tiled pool, a 35 foot diameter half-circle with a waterfall and infinity edge. There is also a sundeck and thatch-roofed rancho.
The property is a tropical Garden of Eden with lush tropical foliage, flowering trees and shrubs, and fruit trees. There is abundant wildlife, including howler monkeys, gautusas, coatimundis, ocelots, jagarundis, deer, armadillo, and peccaries, and there are a wide assortment of colorful birds, including parrots, parakeets, toucans, motmots, manakins, woodpeckers, hummingbirds, and trogans. The land is surrounded by deep jungle ravines on all sides, and guests can explore the rivers bordering the property and swim under the private natural waterfall.
Finca Buen Pais is a 10 minute drive from the undeveloped beach at Manzanillo and only 30 minutes from the popular tourist towns of Mal Pais, Montezuma and Santa Teresa (allow a little more time in the summer). It is a perfect base for exploring the Southern Nicoya Peninsula, while enjoying the tranquility of a private resort. Horseback riding from your front steps can be arranged.
After a day of exploring the Southern Nicoya Peninsula, enjoy the sunset over the ocean from the rancho or veranda with a cool drink or a mango or coconut picked fresh from the tree.

The Buen Pais nature reserve was a wonderful home base for our families adventures on the Nicoya Peninsula. Buen Pais grounds and accommodations were wonderful. It is centrally located and nice and quiet to return to at the end of a busy day. The caretakers were very helpful and it was nice to get to know them and their family. We would definitely recommend Buen Pais for anyone to stay here and get a true Costa Rican experience. Pura Vida!

Upon the return from our trip to Costa Rica yesterday I wanted to make the time to wax poetic regarding how positive our experience at Buen Pais was. The casita itself was bright and impeccably clean just as represented on the website, and the pool was delicious. However wonderful these accomodations were it became quickly obvious that the outstanding factor at Buen Pais are the people who work there. The owner of the Buen Pais must feel thoroughly grateful for the presence of Leanne and Ron, and Orlando! Ron and Leanne were rich, as well as generous, in their ability and desire to share with us answers and thoughtful discussion regarding the bountiful questions we had about the culture, ecology, flora/fauna, history, politics, transportation issues, landmarks etc. of the area as well as the country. Certainly one can read Fodor's or Lonely Planet or online opinions, but there is nothing that can equate to daily experiences and astute unbiased observation. Also, Ron and Leanne's presence as well as their innate sense of knowing when we as 'guests' needed them to be 'non-present' or transparent are an incalculable asset to running a rental business. As we travelled and stayed at assorted accomodations in Costa Rica, what made Buen Pais stand apart, were the grounds and landscaping. That as I saw first hand every day, can be attributed to Orlando. There is a man who labors long and hard and with an attentive eye. I watched him for a solid 40 minutes one early morning as he wielded that machete with force and yet grace. Here's hoping he remains healthy because with that persistent laboring my eyes saw the loomings of carpal tunnel syndrome, heatstroke, and/or back surgery! In summary, our stay at Buen Pais was superb. When/if we repeat a trip to Costa Rica we will definitely be contacting you

This tropical refuge offered everything from nature walks, monkey watching, beautiful gardens, horseback riding or just relaxing with a book by the pool. What a pleasure to have fresh fruit in the morning right off the tree. Located minutes in any direction to beautiful beaches, tourist towns and attractions. It was nice at the end of the day to return to. Our hosts Ann, Robert and Noah were welcoming, gracious and resourceful. Made us feel at home. If ever in Costa Rica we will gladly return. Thanks for all the great memories. Pure Vida.

Fantastic place! Ann and Robert and Noah are great hosts. What we loved the most was the location - close to everything but with the feel of being out of the way. Also, it was wonderful to feel like the outside "came in" and we were pampered but living close to nature. DO not miss this great place!

I planned on staying at Buen Pais for one night though it was so gorgeous and unique that I could not leave after just one night. The casita was private, clean, and the open floor plan made it feel like I was sleeping outdoors even with a roof over my head. The area is totally gorgeous and unique with tico restuaraunts not far away. The ocean view is fantastic and the owners of Buen Pais are gracious and friendly. Consider yourself lucky if you get a chance to visit.

Wonderful place, delightful hosts. The property itself is a pleasant distance from tourist hubbub and, sitting on a hillside above the ocean, was pleasantly cool at night. Wonderful views all around. Accessible to beaches, waterfalls, jungle and neighboring towns. The proprietors, Robert and Ann, are seemingly all-knowing about the surrounding area. The casita was very comfortable - kitchen and other facilities were first rate. The open air shower was a big hit with adults and children. Watch howler monkeys while lathering up!

Buen Pais is truly a magical place. It is beautiful, tranquil, and centrally located to many amazing spots close by. The monkeys hanging in the trees above are enchanting as are the wild flowers and fruits growing everywhere. Robert, Anne and Noah are charming and wonderful hosts. I can't wait to go back!
