Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2007
We fell in love with Semur-en-Axois and travel there several times a year.
We enjoy biking, hiking, gardening, wine tasting, wine making, fine dining, learning the French language, and experiencing the French lifestyle.
We started Share Maison in order to share this magical place with others through fractional ownership.
We have found that by returning to the same beautiful location during different seasons builds more vivid memories from which we are nurtured during our busy city lives the rest of the year.
We are proud to have restored and preserved this historic property.
Why the Owner Chose Semur-en-Auxois
We have traveled the world, and when we stumbled upon this hidden treasure we had to be part of it.
The town is about an hour east of Paris, smack dab in the middle of the Burgundy wine and cheese making region.
The house is located at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac that offers both peaceful tranquility and easy access to the town center.
The entire town is an historic monument status and yet still retains a vibrant local culture with modern amenities and restaurants open all year.
Once you visit this enchanting, tranquil, and friendly town, you will understand how we feel.
The Unique Benefits of this Cottage
This house has both the feel of a French country farmhouse and pied-a-terre in town.
The views from our property are some of the most photographed scenes in all of Burgundy. The visual beauty is inexhaustible!
A few steps along the river brings you to our cloistered vineyard, fruit orchard and garden, where you can enjoy quiet meals from our patio with stunning tower views.
During the summer months, there are weekly festivals in town as well as wine events at local wineries in the fall. The town has an historic Italianate Theatre, which hosts musical concerts and other events throughout the year.
The town is well situated for wine and cheese tasting day trips, and there is huge freshwater lake nearby for swimming and boating.
You may want to hang out in the local cafe in town and soak up the ambiance of the local culture, take in a current run film at the local movie art house, or rent bikes to explore ancient ruins and ride along the famous canals of Burgundy at Motbard. During the summer months, there is even a bike rental shop that will deliver your bike to our doorstep!
The Abby of Fontenay, also classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site like the entire town of Semur, is just a 30 minute car ride though the lush, rolling farmlands surrounding the area.
Whatever your unique taste, this town has much to offer.

Quiet house in Semure en Auxois

We enjoyed our stay in this well-positioned property. The views are every bit as stunning as the pictures on the web site indicate. The house was very clean and well-maintained. In keeping with the general style of such buildings the stairs are fairly steep and the layout a bit idiosyncratic. This just added to the charm for us. We found the owners very friendly, efficient and courteous in our email dealings with them. Our stay was in the late autumn, making for some wonderful colours in Semur and the surrounding countryside. At this time of year we were grateful for the excellent central heating and the warm beds! The broadband internet connection works well and we found the direct in-dial phone line to be very useful. Semur demands a certain level of fitness in getting around but a good walk around the town pays dividends in understanding the local geography (and the road system in, out and across the town). Leaving the rental car on the grass beside the bridge worked well for us and we had no parking problems at any point in our stay. This part of Burgandy is fairly quiet and rural - just what we were looking for. We've stayed in a number of other areas in France and, while we've enjoyed them all, this was perhaps the most authentic French country experience we've had. You could stay in Semur without a car but to get the best out of the region you really need to drive around a bit. All in all, an easy place to see some of the best of France.
