Poets Corner is coastal living at its best with historical charm and quiet sophistication. The property offers a feeling of seclusion in the popular Belmont Heights area and is in a neighborhood surrounded by parks and open spaces. This two bedroom home has been decorated to reflect the artistic flair, culture and love of nature of its previous owners. Full kitchen, with new appliances, fully stocked with utensils for cooking and dining. Use the fresh herbs, lemons and lettuce from our garden to prepare your dinner or if preferred to let someone else do the cooking and refer to the binder of menu’s for fabulous take away or delivery. This home is truly a romantic getaway from it all!

Built in 1950 this home was completely refurbished inside and out (May, 2007) and retains the original character while paying homage to the former owner and published poet, Jane Buel Bradley. In 2004, Jane passed away and left the home to her dearest friend Lorna Kugler. We purchased the home from her family in 2006 with the intent of saving this property from demolition. Poet's Corner is tastefully decorated with some of Jane's own possessions and antiques. Our goal is to provide quiet respite for our guests.

You are invited to sit in the restored gardens and enjoy the mix of citrus and fruit trees, Japanese maples, flowers and herbs or go for a stroll to the Colorado Lagoon and catch glimpses of the resident Kingfisher (mentioned in Jane's poetry). Jane and Lorna loved flowers and the beds have been planted in shades of red and yellows. Visitors comment that the gardens have a very Tuscan feel about them.
Wander behind the house and you will see the beautiful rose hedge and vegetable garden. Please help yourself to some flowers and fresh salad.
Our garden has recently been recognized by the humane society as a sanctuary for urban songbirds and wildlife! This home is located in a quiet neighborhood with glimpses of local wildlife including brown pelicans, doves, finches, song birds, hummers, squirrels, a family of raccoons and kestrels. This is a very unique property in Belmont Heights. Enjoy the urban lifestyle while surrounded by open spaces.

Poet's Corner is close to major tourist attractions. No hassle directions - simple commute to the freeway. You CAN'T get lost....ONE TURN and you are on the street that takes you on your way to the 405, 22, or 605 Freeways!

Local entertainment and restaurants are within a short walking distance or short drive by car. The home is close to Long Beach's Passport and bus services. A cab can deliver you from our local (Long Beach) airport for a ~$10 fee. You are within 30 minutes of both LAX and OC airport. Garage parking is available only by request in ADVANCE of your stay, for an additional charge.

    • We can put you in touch with our neighbor who is a professional MASSEUSE. Enjoy 'spa' treatment without leaving 'the corner'. Contact us in advance for the number. Walk to Blair field and watch a baseball game! Sit in yard and watch the summer FIREWORKS (also at Blair Field)! A footpath directly behind Poet's Corner (in the open field) leads to the wetlands where there are excellent marine life and birdwatching opportunities. Because of the close location to the park and wetlands the garden attacts a good variety of urban wildlife. Binoculars and nature guides are available for guests to use. Fourth Street is quite popular and known for it's antique shops. This is a short distance from Poet's Corner and is a nice place to spend an afternoon. Bicycles (with locks) can be rented ($5/day) to enjoy the local bikepaths and scenery of the shorelines of Alamitos Bay, Naples, Seal Beach, Bolsa Chica and Long Beach.

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2006

Hello! I am the manager and the equestrian in the family. When not teaching biology, I can often be found at the stables riding and caring for our Missouri Foxtrotters, Danny Boy & Ra. Besides managing Poet's Corner and the surrounding gardens we also rescue/rehabilitate wildlife under a Fish and Game rehab permit. When you stay be sure to check out the 'library' room for binoculars, nature guides and the 'bat detector'.

Why the Owner Chose Long Beach

We have lived in this neighborhood since 1997. This neighborhood ROCKS! In an effort to stop the demolition of Poet's Corner in 2005, we became very involved with the 'rescue'. We managed to purchase the property with the family's blessing to save it from McMansionization. We could not bare to see this lovely house disappear so we 'saved' it and have now put the property to work. We have carefully restored this bungalow in keeping with Jane and Lorna's love of art and nature. Many of their writings and antique bits are on display and help create the charm. This home is a wonderful respite for adults from the bustle and noise of urban life. My favorite part of Poet's Corner is the garden which attracts a good number of wild species - testimony to the natural setting of this unique property.

The Unique Benefits of this House

I think the location is singularly unique in Long Beach. This unattached home has nothing on three sides except open space. Open space and peaceful quiet is a rare commodity in Long Beach. The outer perimeter has many of the original plantings and a vegetable garden enjoyed by the neighbors. My favorite way to spend time at Poet's Corner is in the garden with a cup of coffee (or tea!) in the morning and watch the numerous birds and squirrels play along the fence and in the trees....and there is nothing better then fresh produce from your own garden!
