We feel like we're in paradise

Date of Stay: 05/01/12 Review Submitted: 05/18/12

Date entered: 04/27/2012 Jamie, We arrived late yesterday afternoon, had a nice dinner out on the deck, a walk around the lagoon and the neighborhood, then slept for 12 hours!! Your house is beautiful, and you have made it feel so welcoming and so convenient...we feel like we're in paradise. We work very hard at our careers, and this is a perfect get-away for us. Thank you for going into the rental business! You are fantastic at it, and we are so appreciative. This is a personal place. It's special. And your guests feel that. Thank you. It's lovely. What a great location

Guest: Al
Date of Stay: 03/16/12 Review Submitted: 04/30/12

Why would anyone want to stay at a hotel or resort when there is Mika Lani? It was all we hoped for & then some. We really appreciated all the little things (spices, snorkel gear, soap & sponges), kitchen gear, and a very nicely appointed place. And what a great location; anniversary dinner on the lanai beat any restaurant (and not just because we're cheapskates). A lot of people left wherever they were staying to sit on the rocks surrounding our little lagoon; we didn't even have to leave home

Thank you so very much for the use of Mika Lani. It was our first visit but I suspect it won't be our last! We enjoyed every minute. Everyone already has said it all about this place. All true! We did get to see a turtle along with the other beautiful fish. Thank you for the welcome basket and bubbly. We broke it open for our 31st anniversary. That was a great way to celebrate it. Ah there is one more word to describe "The Jewell" - Eden!

After spending a week at your "tree top" home we knew your "Jewel By the Sea" would be first class. this place is everything and more than we anticipated. We have thoroughly enjoyed every minute here!! We did not leave the first day. We liked both Champagne & Hot Spring ponds. Experienced Kehena Beach & saw the lave flow. Best of all was the snorkeling and no neighbors. The other islands are under flood watches & T-storms while we have had sunshine & tropical breezes. Paradise!!

Personifies Aloha

Guest: Dee (New Hampshire)
Date of Stay: 02/25/12 Review Submitted: 03/31/12

We just recently stayed at the Mika Lani. Everyone is so correct in that the pictures do not do the place, nor the location, justice. What's more, the pictures don't convey the amount of Aloha that the owners provided. They left a lovey welcome package with yummy island treats, had plenty of spices on hand, and even provided us with a really lovely bottle of champagne to watch the sunset from the deck. The water at this property is crystal clear!!! You can see tons of fish by just walking around the front yard, but it is a prime snorkeling spot as well. The hot tub was spotless, as were the laundry amenities. We really appreciated that we each had our own bathroom here. Location was PERFECT. So many places to see within an hour. Have so many positive things to say, but am running out of space. I must say that another big plus about this property was the owners gave us our deposit back with lightning speed (before we'd even left the island). Highly recommend this property! Class and integrity all around. Mahalo!

The Best Vacation Ever

Guest: Chuck (North Reading, Ma. 01864)
Date of Stay: 02/20/12 Review Submitted: 03/06/12

The most striking thing about our stay was how beautiful the location is. Whether you're sitting in the house or sitting on the large wrap around porch, the view is magnificent. About 100-200 yards to the left huge waves can be seen, and as they break the most beutiful color of blue I have ever seen appears. The water from the breaking waves and ocean comes in to a lagoon only a few step from the house. Whether you snorkel or just walk down to look in the water there are several brightly colored fish. The house itself is clean, comfortable and well equipped. There was nothing that we needed that wasn't there: mustard, ketchup, mayonaise, coffee, coffee pot, linens, towels, pots, computer with internet, printer, office supplies, snorkling gear, kayaks, grille, bicycles etc. The house was so comfortable and the view so spectacular that we ate most of our meals in. A huge plus for us was the assistance given by the owners. They helped with places to shop, sightseeing suggestions, dining out recommendations, hiking suggestions. About 8 miles from the house is a quaint towm called Pahoa where we did go for dinner. It is a small town with a few restaurants. We went to a Mexican restaurant that was occupied mostly by locals. The bar had several men with ponytails quietly talking among themselves and with the bartender. Our waitreee told us about her trip to Kona the previous day. The food was great !. My wife and I both enjoy getting off of the tourist track and we had a great time. When we got back to the house I made myself a drink and went out to the porch where I noticed a few stars. I went down to where there are lounge chairs and looked up and there were hundreds, if not thousands, of the brightest stars I had ever seen It was so bright that you could almost read a book by the light from the stars. I reclined on the chairs, enjoyed my drink, and watched the stars for a long time. Incredible sight. It is a perfect area for a walk. We walked around the neighborhood and over to the next neighborhood to a place called Champagne Pond, and then out across a lava field to the ocean with beautiful surf and interesting people. One gentleman was walking around with a ukelele and told us he was from Arizona and renting for a year so he could paint. We went as a one time trip but had such a wonderful time we are hoping to get back next year. I'm 70 years old and we have been on several vacations. As my wife said, "This was the best vacation ever"

Thank-you Jamie & Noi for allowing us to live in paradise for 2 weeks. We have been planning this trip for over 1 year, and we were not disappointed. Your home is beautiful and so very relaxing. A perfect place to be in Feb when you live in northern Michigan! (BRRR) It was very quiet here. The snorkeling was fabulous, so many beautiful fish. We did see a turtle bobbing his head up a few times. Thank you for your gifts and all of the thoughtful extras. Mika Lani will definitely be part...

We have never stayed on the Hilo side of the island before. We loved it and plan on coming back - especially to Mika Lani!!! We would like to thank you for for all the extra touches and effort you put into making your home feel like our home. The thoughtfulness of the champagne, basket of goodies, fresh flowers, bath gels, laundry soap, even down to Q-tips in pretty containers in the medicine cabinets were very much appreciated. The view from the kitchen is one we will never forget...

Is this Heaven?

Guest: Ernie and Debby (Traverse City, MI)
Date of Stay: 02/04/12 Review Submitted: 02/25/12

As I write this, I am watching the snow come down in northern Michigan. Seven days ago and 70 degrees warmer, we were enjoying the beauty of Mika Lani. The 2 weeks that we spent there were wonderful. The weather was perfect and snorkeling was amazing. The house is so beautiful, very comfortable and relaxing. I read 3 books while sitting out on the lanai! Since my husband used the hot tub first thing every morning and each night before bed, I think that will be our next investment. Unfortunately, Pele' decided to stop the lava flow, so we missed out on that adventure, but others such as whale watching, black sand beaches and volcano hiking are in abundance. For 2 people, this is a vacation destination not to be missed.

Aloha & Mahalo to Jamie & Noi, It is the most wonderful place. We love it & are already talking about our next trip. The Jewel will definitely be a part of it. The owners have thought of everything when it comes to making their guests feel at home. We love funky Pahoa town with its earthy people & shops. our favorite restaurant is Keleo's. Great atmosphere & food. Finally caught the Makuu market. It was fun. We can't say enough good things about the Jewel, Kapoho & surroundings...

We arrived in the dark and appreciated the detailed directions. Your home was just wonderful this in no way seemed like a rental. The detail and love you have for this place shows in every inch of this place. Mike and I arrived around six thirty and could not believe all the luxuries bestowed to us. As I layed myself down onto the memory foam bed and slept until the dawn when I first saw the lagoon. It took my breath away. We fall in love with sea view... Thanks so much

Second time as wonderful as first

Guest: Susan (Champaign, IL)
Date of Stay: 12/21/11 Review Submitted: 01/04/12

Our week's stay at Mika Lani over Christmas 2011 was our second visit, which already tells you how much we enjoyed our earlier visit there. We'll definitely go back again. We've stayed at quite a few VRBO rentals over the years, and Mika Lani is the best of the best. I wrote a positive review the first time, so I will focus on just a few things this time. 1. Being able to get up early in the morning and walk straight into the water before anyone else is out there is an amazing experience. Not having to arrange and get to a boat tour or drive to a beach or even get dressed first is so wonderful! I was rewarded by seeing sea turtles three different mornings this time, along with several new varieties of fish we hadn't seen during our first visit. If you're planning to take underwater photos, the water is the clearest and the fish and turtles most plentiful early in the morning. 2. We really appreciate the thoughtful provision of just about anything you could think of wanting. Not having to deal with renting snorkeling equipment or bikes is so great. 3. I love the light! In addition to the gorgeous front window wall overlooking the pools, this is one of the few places I've stayed where there's actually enough lightiing provided after the sun goes down. I do needlework and it's rare to find a rental with enough lighting for me to be able to do that in the evening. I also appreciate the glass walls on the lanai that don't obscure any of the view of the pools. 4. I love the quiet and dark. This time, to my surprise, there was no one staying in the houses on either side of us. The afternoon of Christmas day was the only time when there were ever more than 5 snorkelers at a time. Our previous visit was during the summer and even though all of the houses seemed to be full then, it was easy to find times when there were very few people around. This time we spent a few days in Kailua on the Kona side, and the contrast was huge. We MUCH prefer the Hilo side!

The Jewel is truly paradise. Last year we stayed at Kona for our entire visit. This year, we decided to see what life in the Hilo area was like. We love it! The Jewel is just that - a perfect escape, a charming home. Even washing dishes with the view was a pleasure! Listening to the soothing waves in the morning and rains at night, was so relaxing. I can say, we will return and hope to stay here again. Mahalo!

Better snorkeling than the Virgin Islands

Guest: Pat & John

Thank you for letting us stay in your fabulous place! We really appreciated all of the attention you have put into the design & decoration of this house. We enjoyed the use of your kayaks. We expected the snorkeling to be very good - but it was even better than expected. We saw an incredible variety of colorful fish & corals. Much to our surprise, we enjoyed the snorkeling here more than snorkeling on our previous outings to the Virgin Islands & the Grenadines. This place is paradise!

Perfect Hawaiian Honeymoon Getaway!

Guest: Summer (Jackson, MS)
Date of Stay: 09/12/11 Review Submitted: 10/02/11

My husband and I honeymooned at Mika Lani from September 12, 2011- September 19, 2011. We spent 7 nights on the Hilo/Puna side and 3 nights on the Kona side. My only regret is that we did not spend the entire honeymoon at Mika Lani! We woke up every morning to the most beautiful view on the entire island! The snorkeling was phenomenal--much better than I had anticipated. Mika Lani was generously appointed--with everything from laundry detergent to a bath sponge! We really appreciated all of the reading materials about the island and where to visit. The location was wonderful--with a beautiful drive in any direction! Hilo was a short trip away, where we enjoyed the farmer's market and daily lunches at the Hilo Bay Cafe (which has the world's BEST ginger mojitos EVER). We spent a full two days at the Volcano National Park; which is a once-in-a-lifetime excursion, and an evening driving up Mauna Kea, both only a 40 minute drive away. I must admit that I was worried when we arrived from the airport at 9 pm (after a 8 1/2 hour flight) to find the house humid and hot. But upon opening a few windows and turning on the fans, it cooled down to a very comfortable temperature. Overall, we couldn't imagine a better place to stay in Paradise. Upon returning home to Jackson, we immediately began rearranging our frequent flyer miles to plan a return trip next year. Mahalo!!

staying at the jewel by the sea was an incredible treat. we had a lovely time for the first three days of our stay here - beautiful views, clean house, nice kitchen, incredible fish right at our footsteps. unfortunately an extremely loud family moved in next door on the fourth day, and they disturbed the peace we had for the previous days. we contacted Jamie, and she resolved the issue in the most professional way. the way she handled a situation that was actually out of her control was super.

Amazing location, never wanted to leave

Date of Stay: 07/26/11 Review Submitted: 08/11/11

We loved our 4 nights at the Mika Lani and only wished we had booked a full week. The property is as exactly as pictured. The house has all the amenities as listed. For us, the snorkeling out the front door was amazing--we'd recommend just after high tide is best as then you are not fighting the moderate surge coming through the little channel. We saw 4 different types of eels, a Huge turtle, countless varieties of reef fish. We did bring our our shorties and tho' the water is warm, it allowed us to stay in for an hour or so without getting chilled. The opposing shore is public access so you may get some locals doing the snorkeling from about 10-5. Generally, tho, mornings and evenings are all to yourself. We did most of our eating at the condo as we were too lazy to drive in to Pahoa except for the first night. My list of "things to do" got crumbled up the minute I landed here. We basically ate, swam, napped, read, etc and relaxed. I wouldn't choose this place if "being a tourist" is high on your agenda as Hilo is a good 45 minute drive away--unless you have at least a week here so you can balance driving and relaxing. This place is so special you'll just want to hang out in the local area. We hope to return again.

Truly the "Jewel" of our vacation on the Island

Guest: donna and david (Prespatou, B.C. Canada)
Date of Stay: 07/14/11 Review Submitted: 07/24/11

We are SO glad we chose to stay at Mika Lani! We were attracted to this listing originally because we had been to this tide pool area on previous visits to the Island and knew what a wonderful spot it was for snorkelling I absolutely loved getting up every morning to the watch the sunrise from the hot tub before breakfasting on the lanai and heading out for a snorkel. Mika Lani is also a great central location for many of the other sites we wanted to visit while on the East side of the island. The pictures of the property shown in the listing are great but the real thing is even better! The wide lanai that surrounds the house and the large windows and patio doors made us feel like we were right on the water no matter where we were in the house. Absolutely everything you could ever want has been thoughtfully provided- barbecue, bicycles, water shoes, snorkel gear, kayaks are some of the outdoor gear. The fridge and cupboards were well stocked with the basic condiments and spices when we choose to stay in and cook for ourselves. We also enjoyed dining at many of the many great little restaurants in the area. (Even the desk/computer area was stocked with essentials!) Everything was spotless, inside and out. The welcome basket with was a wonderful treat! We have stayed at a good many rentals and hotels over the years but Mika Lani has been our very favourite. This place is aptly named as it truly is "A Jewel" of a place to stay. We will definitely be back!

What a wonderful stay! We'd wake up early before the sunrise, soak in the hot tub until second breakfast, and swim with the fish in the late afternoon at high tide. Some of the most incredible sights were the new black sand beach at Kalapana, driving around the mouth of Kilauea, and the stargazing at Mauna Kea visitor center. We had a wonderful time. Mika Lani was an amazing vacation location. If you are interested in finding a place that has peace and tranquility than this is the place. More beautiful, inside and out, than pictures can even show. Snorkeling everyday (itwas like living in an aquarium)and the star gazing at night was phenominal. All you need to bring is a few clothes, food and your favorite beverage. They have towels (even beach towels), snorkeling gear, kayaks, floaties, dvd's, and all kinds of books and ifo on the Big Island. They have all kind of condiments and spices to cook with. The computer was a God send because our cell phone (Verizon 3G) did not work at the house but did once we got out to the main road. It was the PERFECT way to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary and 50th's birthdays! Thank you for sharing your little piece of paradise!!

Well that sure was a special week and had I known your place was going to be so very lovely - comfortable with wonderful appointments and all the necessary amenities -we would have planned for a 2 week stay. We felt instantly at home at Mika Lani and never tired of watching the daily rhythm of the tide and of all the colorful and curious fish. We've been to the islands of Hawaii (including a stay on the Kona side about 10 years ago) a number of times but have never been as relaxed as we were on this trip. Beautiful perfection. Thank you so much. We hope to be back in the not too distant future.

Staying at Mika Lani for a week made us feel like royalty! Lounging on the lanai, enjoying our meals there, the hot tub, then entering our (almost) private lagoon to snorkel in our (almost)private aquarium of tropical fish. What a beautiful, serene, relaxing place to be. Some days we didn't leave the house at all. Our only regret is that we have to give up our royal retreat for reality. Mahalo until the next time.

Date of Stay: 04/20/11 Review Submitted: 09/19/11

Our stay at your lovely hale Mika Lani exceeded any expectations. Our only agenda & itinerary with this vacation was to relax, rest and ready ourselves to return to reality. In 2009 we visited Hilo for 9 days and after visiting Kapoho tide pools kept returning. On this vacation we knew exactly where we wanted to stay. The best snorkeling on the island - some days only a few other people sharing this piece of paradise. Never been crowded...Thank you for making this vacation spot available. I hope it won't be our only stay at Mika Lani. While we must return to the realities of our lives and the daily grind - the magic of this place will always be in our hearts and minds. Aloha & Mahalo. Spent two weeks at Mika Lani. Wonderful spot on tide pools. No crowds. The perfect retreat from a busy worklife needing rest, relaxation and re-energizing. All of our needs were well met - snorkel gear, bikes, kayak, BBQ, hot tub, kitchen... Couldn't have asked for better weather or location. Will come back in a heart beat! Our cell phones didn't get reception until mile marker 5 on 132. That was okay. The internet available was more than adequate to keep us in contact back on the mainland.

As you know, this is our second visit to Mika Lani...the enchantment of your Jewel by the Sea beckoned us back...but this time our trip included not only vacationing but house hunting. As a result of our first visit, we truly fell in love with the Big Island, and made the decision to change our lives and move to Hawaii. Mika Lani is still the best rental house we've ever encountered...you provide everything anyone could desire. The snorkeling was superb. Swam with a huge beautiful turtle in the tidepools. The Karma from Mika Lani filled us with many feelings of hope to move to the island. And so...we bought a wonderful house in Onomea Bay!! What a WOW moment in our lives!!! And Mika Lani was our start on our journey a little over a year ago. Soon we will be Kama'aina! Aloha Nui Loa!

Better weather this time! The tidepools so different than Kona. Love your place - has everything! We'll be back! Mahalo.

Our second stay at Mika Lani and it is still just as wonderful as the first time in 2007. A magical spot. Mahalo.

The perfect place for a wonderfully relaxing week. Favorite spot is the chaise, when not exploring the gorgeous water. Mahalo.

More Please! 3 days just too short. We have done many house exchanges - each had their own unique special charm - but this was truly special - even down to the careful attention to detail in the architecture inside. Design & furnishings - a bit of a Japanese feel to it with the sliding doors to the bedroom, the flowers, sink, the clean linens. Never liked staying in a hotel room and this stay is the reason why. I would ask other guests not to tell their friends. We want to come back. More Please!

Scotty and I are still here in the "amazing space" for another 5 days, but I have to say many Mahalo's to you Both. This really is a Magical Place. All this was a surprise to me from Scotty, and I have to say with tears, happy one's that I absolutely love it here! I had no idea where we were going, and this this is so wonderful. Mahalo, for the great "welcome basket" and the champagne, how thoughtful and how nice. The fish in the Lagoon and Pond have been something I will never forget.

Aloiha! We ae leaving Mika Lani after five terrific days at this wonderful home! Mahalo for the welcome basket of goodies and the champagne! Many terrific memories of snorkeling around this lagoon. Sea turtles & lots of beautiful fish. The dining recommendations for Pahoa were spot-on. This was an excellent winter respite. The home is a perfect example of indoor/outdoor living and of "living large" in a smaller space. Best vacation ever!
