Owner Description

Year Purchased: 1978

Doug and I live on Merritt Island, Florida. We have worked in the Space industry for over 25 years, I for NASA (retired) and Doug for Boeing. Because of the beauty of the Shenandoah Valley and the location of our lovely rock home, we chose to keep it when we moved here in 1983. It is such a joy for us to share the home with visitors from around the world. Several Kennedy Space Center workers have visited the home and are enthralled with the quiet, country life. Doug and I enjoy visiting the home to get it ready for our guests and to keep in touch with friends and family. These friends help us with the home, keeping up the grounds and house in our absence.

Why the Owner Chose Mount Jackson

This rock home was our personal home for three years before we came to work at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. We loved the house and location so much that we chose to keep it and share it with others.

Mount Jackson is a wonderful little town, situated just above the Shenandoah River, close to the Massanutten Mountain and along the Old Valley Pike. There are several good restaurants, a chain grocery store, gas stations and antique stores. Walking around town is a pleasurable passtime. My (Judy's) Grandparents owned the old stagecoach inn on the southern end of town. It's still there and President Andrew Jackson stayed in an upstairs room during his travels through the Valley. The town was named for him. We love to stroll through the 1700's churchyard in the center of town and look for the graves of American Revolutionary soldiers. Yep, they are there and close to the Valley Pike. Stonewall Jackson's camp was on Rude's Hill about a mile south of the town. He named the hill for Mr. Rude who owned the large stone house still standing at the foot of the hill.

The Unique Benefits of this House

Resting on the wonderful decks and enjoying the spectacular views and local wildlife. Touring the beautiful and historic Shenandoah Valley. Playing in the Shenandoah River and the creeks that lace the Valley. Dozing by the wood stove on cool evenings. Walking and biking the many country roads. Driving from the Massanutten Mountain to the West Virginia border on Great North Mountain and traversing all of the scenic country roads in between. Attending good benefit country suppers and festivals where we make so many new friends. Watching the sunrises and sunsets, seeing the moon come up behind the Massanutten Mountain, viewing millions of stars that are bright in the fresh country air. Listening to bull frogs and spring peepers in the neighbor's pond. It's so quiet we can hear the grass grow.

    • Judy & Doug: You have a lovely home, and we really enjoyed staying there. Very private, with great scenic views from every window. We especially enjoyed sitting out on the back deck watching the birds and wildlife. The guest book has great suggestions for walks and drives, and the restaurant reviews are very helpful. Our favorite was the Spring Hill Tavern in Woodstock. I would certainly recommend your home to anyone looking to spend a relaxing time in the Shenandoah Valley. Thanks SO much for sharing it with us!

Doug and Judy: We had a great time here in the mountains! :-) Thanks so much for the opportunity to stay in such a comfortable HOME. It really did feel like it became OUR home while we were here, and it was so relaxing to come HOME to after some of our long, arduous hiking excursions! We especially enjoyed the comfy chairs with the great view in the living room, as well as the "disconnect" with technology, as we took advantage of the badmitten set and horseshoes we found in the living room closet! We would highly recommend this house to anyone who would enjoy a peaceful, quiet, secluded spot to come "home" to.... (From our guestbook) Thank you so much for a great week! We look forward to our monthly vacation each year -- the home is perfect! We could not have done better anywhere. Rod and I want to thank you, Judy and Doug, for all the wonderful extra touches you have added to make everyone's stay more enjoyable. The new chair is a delight, as well as the potted flowers and herbs. We are also enjoying the folding camping chairs. The birds and chipmunks are fun and beautiful to watch. We enjoy them every day with the newspaper you have generously provided. Thank you again for all your thoughtfulness and for allowing us to stay in your beautiful home. We look forward to each visit.

Dear Cooleys: Thank you for your COMPLETE hospitality - from the applebutter, apples and pickles, down to the foam football my son was so appreciative of. We enjoyed our long weekend and our friend's birthday party down the road at Conicville. It was calm and relaxing here. My children even enjoyed raking up a pile of leaves! The chipmunk even checked us out this morning. I swear he was staring at me through the picture window and then over to the other folks in the living room. This guest book is a wonderful idea. We'll have to use some of the trip ideas on our next visit. We have recommended your place to our "local" friends here. (From our guest book comments)
