Mount Jackson house description
Enjoy a COUNTRY VACATION in our secluded, natural stone home on four acres of fields, forests and spectacular mountain views. Located in the Pleasant View area of Shenandoah County, the home is on a gentle rise and well off a charming, easy-access hard surfaced country road. The property is securely fenced and gated.
A rock chimney and fireplace woodstove centers the Great Room where you may pursue indoor activities while having full views of yards, decks and mountains through floor to ceiling windows. Rocking recliners, comfy furniture and plush beds grace the home. The home is filled with amenities and meticulously cleaned.
Comfortable decks on three sides of the home provide opportunities for hours of outdoor relaxation. Views of mountains, fields and nature can give you perfect peace. Old time rockers, retro metal chairs and glider, lounge chairs, and tables grace the many decks. A hammock and picnic table are beneath the towering oaks.
The cozy bedrooms provide a comfortable retreat for quiet moments. The master bedroom has its own bathroom and walk-in closet and French doors open onto the deck for coffee and sunrise viewing. All of the bedrooms offer quality queen beds. The fold out queen sofa bed allows one bedroom to be converted to a private, relaxing den or reading room with wonderous mountain views.
For the adventurous, there are numerous walks, bike rides and country drives from the house. Discover historic Civil War battlefields and era homes from as early as the 1700's, iron furnaces, a covered and swinging bridges across creeks and the Shenandoah River. We have a basket of pamphlets detailing all the places you may want to visit. Our guest book features many trip ideas and detailed route directions. We will be delighted to answer questions at any time before or during your visit.
If you choose to stay home, there are lots of indoor and outdoor games and activities. Wonderful wildlife will visit you daily, showing off their unique personalities. Chipmunks race about for food, a fox squirrel checks here and there, a large variety of songbirds visit feeders and birdbath. Look for the beautiful indigo bunting. Wild rabbits frolic while deer and turkey can be seen along the fences and in the cornfield behind the house. And, yes, bears and coyotes roam about but the field fence keeps them off the property. Enjoy the morning and evening as you watch the sunrise and sunset over the lovely mountains.

Great place for a getaway!
Great place for a getaway!
My wife and I enjoyed a superb weekend at this lovely place during the peak of the fall foliage. The rooms are spacious and well-decorated using a distinctive country flavour, and the view out from any window are nothing short of enchanting. We also had great fun toying with the cassette tapes and star-gazing into night in complete privacy. The owners prepared a giant folder which would prove to be very helpful when we were looking for places to visit. There are neither Wi-Fi connection nor computer, but I opined that to be part of the whole therapeutic experience!!!

We had a great time visiting even though it rained almost the entire time and the trees weren't as glorious as we had hoped. Our stay was comfortable and 'at home' atmosphere. The house is clean and well maintained, with a very helpful binder of directions-even with additional pages we could take along in the car! It was a much needed getaway for all of us and I could not imagine the trip if we would have had to be in hotel rooms!

Judy & Doug: Your lovely home was just what we needed for a long weekend getaway! Our 3 year old loved playing in the yard & also with the retro wooden toys. It was wonderful to stay at a home that had a fully stocked pantry, tons of toiletries, movies, cozy blankets and so on. Our favorite was the views from all sides of your home - the mountains, the pine trees and the cornfield. We enjoyed your location as well & visited a local winery, a community festival and the Shenandoah Caverns. We wanted a cozy place to relax and that's exactly what we found. Thanks again! p.s. thank you also for the apple butter...YUM.

Peaceful Retreat in the Shenandoah ValleyGuest comment entered by owner
Peaceful Retreat in the Shenandoah Valley
We spent Labor Day weekend here and had a wonderful time. The house is in a great location for tons of activities; wineries, Luray Caverns, Shenandoah National Park, Woodstock, and more. The house itself is cute and on an amazing piece of property. The front patio overlooks a gorgeous lawn with a view of the mountains and the back porch is a lovely retreat with a view of a corn field. You feel completely secluded but with all of the creature comforts. The house is well stocked and you really feel at home. The littlest things made all of the difference; having salt and pepper and little things you didn't pack, like band-aids. Judy was very helpful when booking and gave us recommendations, like letting us know the Shenandoah County Fair was going on, which was so much fun! The best thing about this place were the views. Opening the curtains in the morning was just breathtaking. Thanks, Judy!

Judy: Your vacation home is one of our favorites and, once again, we had a great time. Our family 4th of July party was the best ever. We also took in Woodstock's fireworks. WOW! Thanks! (A note left in our guest book)

We found peace
We found peace
Doug and Judy, Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to stay in your home. After being overseas for a year, all I wanted to do was find some peace. Your home in Mt Jackson was perfect. The sounds of familiar birds, the lush green hills and fireflies at night were all wonderful to experience again. We had great fun exploring the area and enjoyed everyone we met. You have quite the view from your living room, and I bet it is glorious during the fall. We truly enjoyed our stay and will forever remember our time in your home. Thank you very much for a wonderful stay. ROBIN and BILL

Fantastic and Relaxing Weekend
What a fantastic and relaxing weekend we had! Our 2 1/2 year old loved running in the yard and woods and finding flowers and caterpillars. Toby had great suggestions on food options and we ran into him at Seven Bends for breakfast! Perfect location to relax. Thank you so much! P.S. Our son loves your whale puzzle in the big window!

Really a good and relaxed weekend!
Thanks a lot for allowing us to stay in your house! It was really a good and relaxed weekend! We went horseback riding, to Luray Caverns and did hiking in the area around the house and I should tell you that I like it more than hiking in the woods. :-) I hope we can come again soon. (by e-mail)

About the owner: Doug and I live on Merritt Island in Florida. We have retired from the Kennedy Space Center after 30 years of working with the Space Shuttle (also retired).
Why the Owner Chose Mount Jackson:
This lovely rock home on four acres was our personal home for three years before we came to work at Kennedy Space Center. We loved the house and location so much that we chose to keep it and share it with others. Doug and I laid all of the uncut mountain, valley and river stones found in the house and deck wall. Mount Jackson is a wonderful little town, situated just above the Shenandoah River, close to the Massanutten Mountain and along the Old Valley Pike. There are several good restaurants, a chain grocery store, gas stations and antique stores. Walking around town is a pleasurable passtime. My (Judy's) Grandparents owned the old stagecoach inn on the southern end of town. It's still there and President Andrew Jackson regularly stayed in an upstairs room during his travels through the Valley. The town was named for him. We love to stroll through the 1700's churchyard in the center of town and look for the graves of American Revolutionary and Civil War soldiers. Stonewall Jackson's camp was on Rude's Hill about a mile south of the town. He named the hill for Mr. Rude who owned the large 1700's house still standing at the foot of the hill.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Relaxing on the wonderful decks and enjoying the spectacular views and local wildlife. Touring the beautiful and historic Shenandoah Valley. Playing in the Shenandoah River and the many creeks that lace the Valley. Dozing by the wood stove on cool evenings. Walking and biking the many country roads. Driving from the Massanutten Mountain to the West Virginia border on Great North Mountain and traversing all of the scenic country roads in between. Attending good benefit country suppers and festivals where new friends can be met. Watching the sunrises and sunsets, seeing the moon come up over the Massanutten Mountain, viewing millions of stars that are bright in the fresh country air. Listening to bull frogs and spring peepers in the neighbor's pond. It's so quiet we can hear the grass grow.
