Lovely Rock Home on Four Acres - Seclusion and Amazing Views!
Year Purchased: 1978
Why the Owner Chose Mount Jackson
This rock home was our personal home for three years before we came to work at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. We loved the house and location so much that we chose to keep it and share it with others. Doug and I laid all of the uncut mountain stones found in the house and deck wall.
Mount Jackson is a wonderful little town, situated just above the Shenandoah River, close to the Massanutten Mountain and along the Old Valley Pike. There are several good restaurants, a chain grocery store, gas stations and antique stores. Walking around town is a pleasurable passtime. My (Judy's) Grandparents owned the old stagecoach inn on the southern end of town. It's still there and President Andrew Jackson stayed in an upstairs room during his travels through the Valley. The town was named for him. We love to stroll through the 1700's churchyard in the center of town and look for the graves of American Revolutionary soldiers. Yep, they are there and close to the Valley Pike. Stonewall Jackson's camp was on Rude's Hill about a mile south of the town. He named the hill for Mr. Rude who owned the large 1700's house still standing at the foot of the hill.
The Unique Benefits at this House
Resting on the wonderful decks and enjoying the spectacular views and local wildlife. Touring the beautiful and historic Shenandoah Valley. Playing in the Shenandoah River and the creeks that lace the Valley. Dozing by the wood stove on cool evenings. Walking and biking the many country roads. Driving from the Massanutten Mountain to the West Virginia border on Great North Mountain and traversing all of the scenic country roads in between. Attending good benefit country suppers and festivals where we make so many new friends. Watching the sunrises and sunsets, seeing the moon come up over the Massanutten Mountain, viewing millions of stars that are bright in the fresh country air. Listening to bull frogs and spring peepers in the neighbor's pond. It's so quiet we can hear the grass grow.
Owner's Map of Mount Jackson
Doug and I live on Merritt Island, Florida. We have worked in the Space industry for over 25 years, I for NASA and Doug for Boeing. Because of the beauty of the Shenandoah Valley and the location of our lovely rock home, we chose to keep it when we moved to Florida in 1983. It is such a joy for us to share the home with visitors from around the world. Doug and I enjoy visiting the home to get it ready for our guests and to keep in touch with friends and family.

Judy, we loved the house! My Uncle was totally impressed and he loved it. He said he might come back in the fall because he really liked the rest and relaxation. My two aunts and uncle had never rented a vacation home before and never thought to do it. Thank you for sharing your house with us. (By e-mail)

We had a wonderful stay at this well furnished, spotlessly clean home for JMU Graduation weekend. We were at JMU in 15 minutes graduation morning after a good night's sleep & a wonderful day of sitting outside admiring the view & beauty of this property. Thanks so much for sharing your home.
Owner response:We are so glad, Cathy, that you and your family had such a nice stay. The pictures you took of the property and your family remain in our picture file and are viewed often. The black capped chickadee must have become your friend to let you get such a closeup shot. We hope you can come again for a visit. Fondly, Judy and Doug

We wanted to send you this note to tell you about our week in the Shenandoah Valley. It was absolutely the most restful and relaxing vacation we have ever had. Your home was so comfy and cozy. It was a wonderful blessing to wake up each morning and sit out on the deck to watch the sun rise over the mountains. In the evenings we watched as the sun set over the mountains to the west. We had a great week. We went to the Shenandoah Caverns, their gift shop and the displays of yesteryear store fronts. We toured the building that houses retired Rose parade and Inaugural parade floats. The Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge parkway were breathtaking. Wow!! We visited Gore's slaughter house and bought a country ham and can't wait to try it. We would definitely recomment a trip to Dayton Farmer's Market where we bought a few Christmas gifts. On Saturday we had the pleasure of meeting both of you. What a wonderful way to end our vacation stay. Because of e-mailing back and forth from the time we agreed to rent your house, we've felt as though you were friends. You both definitely have the gift of hospitality. Your home reflects that you try to fulfill everyone's needs while they are visiting. Your home and your e-mails also were witness to your faith in God. It made us feel so comfortable knowing we were renting from Christians. Again, thank you so much for allowing us to stay in your home. God's Blessings Be Upon You Both. Thank you so much for opening your home to our family. Our daughter married a local boy and had her wedding in Mount Jackson. You know how hectic getting ready for a wedding can be....This was the perfect place for our family to come and relax, decompress, regroup and trudge on... My five year old granddaughter wanted to know who's house this was. I told her it was Doug and Judy Cooley's house. She wanted to know if you were a Grandma; I told her yes. So, your house is now known in our family as Grandma's house. My granddaughter would get tired from all the preparation for the wedding and say, "I just want to go to Grandma Cooley's house." We hope we can come for a visit in the fall of the year. It is nice to kinow we have such a warm, comfy home to come to when we visit our new extended family. Thank you. (From our guest book)

Judy, We thoroughly enjoyed our week's stay in your home in the Shenandoah Valley. Your house and yard have great views over the countryside and the corn field. The lightening bugs in the corn field and around the house were spectacular and a real treat to see. Our location was perfect for touring the Shenandoah Valley. Pogo and her dad very much enjoyed visiting Fox Hollow off Skyline Drive, the area of the old homestead where her grandmother was born. Thanks for sharing your home with us. (George, Houston, Texas. Judy & Doug: You have a lovely home, and we really enjoyed staying there. Very private, with great scenic views from every window. We especially enjoyed sitting out on the back deck watching the birds and wildlife. The guest book has great suggestions for walks and drives, and the restaurant reviews are very helpful. Our favorite was the Spring Hill Tavern in Woodstock. I would certainly recommend your home to anyone looking to spend a relaxing time in the Shenandoah Valley. Thanks SO much for sharing it with us!
Owner response:The Guest Book is a pet project for us and is constantly being updated as we find new things to do, good restaurants, and events to add to our tip sheet. We have a box of pamphlets, maps and books to aid in discovering the Valley. We provide AAA trip guides and maps, local telephone directories, and nature and birding guides. We have detailed several walks and driving trips around the Valley and welcome suggestions for future additions. Recent visitors took a rafting trip down the Shenandoah and visited a new winery ony two miles from the vacation home. Joanne told me how nice the winery owners were, the wonderful wine tasting and of their purchase of bottles of wine to take home to enjoy at their picnic and bar-b-que in the back yard overlooking the cornfield. Summer nights promise an amazing event as thousands of lightning bugs ascend from the 50 acres of growing corn. We are so thankful for our wonderful guests and welcome them back at any time of the year.
