Judy, we loved the house! My Uncle was totally impressed and he loved it. He said he might come back in the fall because he really liked the rest and relaxation. My two aunts and uncle had never rented a vacation home before and never thought to do it. Thank you for sharing your house with us. (By e-mail)

We wanted to send you this note to tell you about our week in the Shenandoah Valley. It was absolutely the most restful and relaxing vacation we have ever had. Your home was so comfy and cozy. It was a wonderful blessing to wake up each morning and sit out on the deck to watch the sun rise over the mountains. In the evenings we watched as the sun set over the mountains to the west. We had a great week. We went to the Shenandoah Caverns, their gift shop and the displays of yesteryear store fronts. We toured the building that houses retired Rose parade and Inaugural parade floats. The Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge parkway were breathtaking. Wow!! We visited Gore's slaughter house and bought a country ham and can't wait to try it. We would definitely recomment a trip to Dayton Farmer's Market where we bought a few Christmas gifts. On Saturday we had the pleasure of meeting both of you. What a wonderful way to end our vacation stay. Because of e-mailing back and forth from the time we agreed to rent your house, we've felt as though you were friends. You both definitely have the gift of hospitality. Your home reflects that you try to fulfill everyone's needs while they are visiting. Your home and your e-mails also were witness to your faith in God. It made us feel so comfortable knowing we were renting from Christians. Again, thank you so much for allowing us to stay in your home. God's Blessings Be Upon You Both. Thank you so much for opening your home to our family. Our daughter married a local boy and had her wedding in Mount Jackson. You know how hectic getting ready for a wedding can be....This was the perfect place for our family to come and relax, decompress, regroup and trudge on... My five year old granddaughter wanted to know who's house this was. I told her it was Doug and Judy Cooley's house. She wanted to know if you were a Grandma; I told her yes. So, your house is now known in our family as Grandma's house. My granddaughter would get tired from all the preparation for the wedding and say, "I just want to go to Grandma Cooley's house." We hope we can come for a visit in the fall of the year. It is nice to kinow we have such a warm, comfy home to come to when we visit our new extended family. Thank you. (From our guest book)

Judy, We thoroughly enjoyed our week's stay in your home in the Shenandoah Valley. Your house and yard have great views over the countryside and the corn field. The lightening bugs in the corn field and around the house were spectacular and a real treat to see. Our location was perfect for touring the Shenandoah Valley. Pogo and her dad very much enjoyed visiting Fox Hollow off Skyline Drive, the area of the old homestead where her grandmother was born. Thanks for sharing your home with us. (George, Houston, Texas. We had a wonderful stay at this well furnished, spotlessly clean home for JMU Graduation weekend. We were at JMU in 15 minutes graduation morning after a good night's sleep & a wonderful day of sitting outside admiring the view & beauty of this property. Thanks so much for sharing your home.

Owner response:We are so glad, Cathy, that you and your family had such a nice stay. The pictures you took of the property and your family remain in our picture file and are viewed often. The black capped chickadee must have become your friend to let you get such a closeup shot. We hope you can come again for a visit. Fondly, Judy and Doug

Judy & Doug: You have a lovely home, and we really enjoyed staying there. Very private, with great scenic views from every window. We especially enjoyed sitting out on the back deck watching the birds and wildlife. The guest book has great suggestions for walks and drives, and the restaurant reviews are very helpful. Our favorite was the Spring Hill Tavern in Woodstock. I would certainly recommend your home to anyone looking to spend a relaxing time in the Shenandoah Valley. Thanks SO much for sharing it with us!

Owner response:The Guest Book is a pet project for us and is constantly being updated as we find new things to do, good restaurants, and events to add to our tip sheet. We have a box of pamphlets, maps and books to aid in discovering the Valley. We provide AAA trip guides and maps, local telephone directories, and nature and birding guides. We have detailed several walks and driving trips around the Valley and welcome suggestions for future additions. Recent visitors took a rafting trip down the Shenandoah and visited a new winery ony two miles from the vacation home. Joanne told me how nice the winery owners were, the wonderful wine tasting and of their purchase of bottles of wine to take home to enjoy at their picnic and bar-b-que in the back yard overlooking the cornfield. Summer nights promise an amazing event as thousands of lightning bugs ascend from the 50 acres of growing corn. We are so thankful for our wonderful guests and welcome them back at any time of the year.

We had a wonderful stay in your well-appointed house. The views were magnificent and the countryside was beautiful. I wish we had more time to explore the area. Thanks for a memorable stay.

Owner response:Tom and his party came from our home state of Florida and had never been to the Shenandoah Valley. They were amazed and delighted at the beauty of the mountains. They went fishing and turkey hunting (Spring gobbler season) and enjoyed fixing their catches at the house. Trout streams are stocked in early spring. We hope Tom can come for an extended stay.

I just wanted to say "Thank you" for providing us with a beautiful , clean home to stay in while on our trip to Virginia. The views are breath taking from the back and the front and even from the inside looking out. It's so peaceful just sitting on the porch watching the birds at the feeders. Everything we needed was already thought of which made it very stress free for us.I would highly recommend this home to anyone looking to get away. I slept like a baby the whole time we were there. Thank you !!!

Owner response:We have numerous bird/hummingbird feeders and bird baths so our guests can delight in watching the antics of buntings, cardinals, finches, flickers, rufous-sided towhees, chickadees, and many others (Peterson's Bird Book is provided for you to identify them.) There are four mountain bluebird houses and these lovely guests flit around, even landing on window sills. Count on Canada geese flyovers each day and deer visiting the cornfield morning and evening. It is a constant show from the decks and we have provided plenty of chairs, lounges and rockers for comfort. How glad we are that you enjoyed the peace and the wildlife, Casey.

Doug and Judy: We had a great time here in the mountains! :-) Thanks so much for the opportunity to stay in such a comfortable HOME. It really did feel like it became OUR home while we were here, and it was so relaxing to come HOME to after some of our long, arduous hiking excursions! We especially enjoyed the comfy chairs with the great view in the living room, as well as the "disconnect" with technology, as we took advantage of the badmitten set and horseshoes we found in the living room closet! We would highly recommend this house to anyone who would enjoy a peaceful, quiet, secluded spot to come "home" to.... (From our guestbook) Thank you so much for a great week! We had a wonderful time in your home. We loved the Valley and were very taken with how senic the property and surrounding area was. We realy enjoyed touring the area. We were able to see Washington DC, The Luary Caverns as well as the Battle of New Market and Hapers Ferry. We look forward to returning next year! Thanks so much Doug and Judy for letting have the privilage of staying in your home away from home. The best part of each day was knowing we had a very comfortable and inviting home to return to. Ricky, Dave and Boys

Owner response:These wonderful guests did so much in the time they were at the home that we are astounded. They are are both Royal Canadian police and were thrilled to be visiting the Shenandoah Valley with their sons. Every minute was filled with trips and activities and they were glad to get home each evening for warm baths/showers and comfy beds. It is so gratifying for us to provide this comfortable home for our visitors.

We look forward to our monthly vacation each year -- the home is perfect! We could not have done better anywhere. Rod and I want to thank you, Judy and Doug, for all the wonderful extra touches you have added to make everyone's stay more enjoyable. The new chair is a delight, as well as the potted flowers and herbs. We are also enjoying the folding camping chairs. The birds and chipmunks are fun and beautiful to watch. We enjoy them every day with the newspaper you have generously provided. Thank you again for all your thoughtfulness and for allowing us to stay in your beautiful home. Dear Cooleys: Thank you for your COMPLETE hospitality - from the applebutter, apples and pickles, down to the foam football my son was so appreciative of. We enjoyed our long weekend and our friend's birthday party down the road at Conicville. It was calm and relaxing here. My children even enjoyed raking up a pile of leaves! The chipmunk even checked us out this morning. I swear he was staring at me through the picture window and then over to the other folks in the living room. This guest book is a wonderful idea. We'll have to use some of the trip ideas on our next visit. We have recommended your place to our "local" friends here. (From our guest book comments)

We had a wonderful time! Loving to hike, we took the five mile circle walk through farmland and by the foot of Buck Hill and explored the corn field and woods behind the home. It was great to tour the Valley and meet some of the neighbors. Mom's Restaurant, Sal's Italian Restaurant and Cracker Barrel were favorite eating places. Local shops and Wal Mart were great places to buy gifts for Christmas! We plan to come again in August and are looking forward to it! The house is perfect, lots of room and beautiful views. Doug and Judy: Pam and I had a wonderful week here in the Valley. Your lovely home provided every comfort and was the perfect place to rest after our many excursions. The week was absolutely beautiful with sunny days and cool nites. Thank you for all you provided for us in the way of both comfort and information. We took the drives and walking trips you suggested. I had to rest all afternoon after our six mile hike around the area. The Valley is beautiful in many ways and I have many photos to prove it. I will post them on the internet and send you the site so you can view them if you like. Pam especially liked visiting all the antique shops and malls in the area and I loved spending all day Sunday at the re-enactment of the Battle of Cedar Creek. Dear Doug and Judy: What a peaceful week! Sue had everything in tip-top shape. The apple butter was a great treat. The wide variety of birds and the frisky little chipmunks put on quite a show, visible from these wonderful open living room windows. The area holds beauty over every hill and around every turn. It was such a wonderful week. The views were fantastic and relaxing. Dad lost count of the various species of butterflies that played around the tall pink flowers blooming in the bed at the end of the rock wall. The floor plan of the house and its location on the property certainly showed thought and planning. I love the way the drive comes up under the pines. I would turn around and head back for another week but work calls. I would love to see the dogwoods and redbuds in bloom! Some day I will be back in that area! I'm glad God led me to your beautiful home. Do keep in touch! God bless you for your efforts to make us feel at home. (from E-mail and guest book)

Hi! We are the Milgrim family. We were allowed the great privilege of staying at the Cooley's house in Virginia. We cannot begin to share the wonderful time we had there nor how the Cooley's were used of God to fill such a huge need in our lives. We serve as Missionaries on a little island in the Eastern Caroline Islands. We are part of a larger chain of islands known as The Federated States of Micronesia. We love it and have lived here and served the Lord since 2001. We have been given the opportunity some only dream of. We teach in a mission school and George pastors a small village church. In April 2004, all that came to a halt when George suffered a heart attack while ministering here on Pohnpei. Once he was stabalized we flew home to Virginia to a battery of tests and hospital stays. Once my husband was doing much better, we began searching for a place to stay on a short-term basis. We wanted this type of arrangement so we could leave for the mission field as soon as the doctors released us. While shopping in Mount Jackson, we ran across a wonderful lady who knew of the Cooley's home and put us in contact with them. We were able to work it out and WOW what a wonderful blessing!! The house was immaculate, had everything you would ever need!! The views were spectacular and the privacy was perfect!! The Cooley's are the most gracious couple I have come in contact with in a long time!! We stayed several months and were able to come back to the mission field in late September. We will never forget our little rock house and the wonderful folks that God used to make our last months in Virginia a time of healing and refreshment. We thank God for the Cooleys. They are truly Angels sent from above!! George, Patty, Nathaniel and Cilla Grace. (Sent to us by mail)

Thank you for opening your Shenandoah Valley vacation home to us during our Christ-centered New Year's Eve retreat. Your grounds were quite attractive for our early morning walks. We came seeking to hear from God and to receive wisdom from Him, and we are satisfied. Thank you for thinking of everything to make our stay one of great reward. You are extremely thoughtful. No sooner had we thought we may need to run to the store due to our forgetfulness, then there it was, in a drawer, on a shelf, awaiting our need of it. I cannot begin to express our appreciation of your home, a resting place and a mountain to retreat to, to know Him better, deeper. The memories, the views, the hospitality and much-needed escape is forever in our memories. I believe I have left a piece of myself behind in this sacred place. Thank you for everything! We had a GREAT time relaxing in your lovely home. We had everything we needed for the whole family, right down to freshly-brewed coffee in the morning. Visiting with your caretaker, Sue, and family, and their collection of chicks and cows, was a highlight. Just stepping outside at night -- finding stars that you can't see when artificial lighting is nearby -- was also a treat. It was a wonderful vacation! (By E-mail)

Thank you for renting us your lovely home. We had a very enjoyable week, with everything supplied that we could need. We enjoyed feeding the birds. We will keep you in mind for our 2006 reunion and we will recommend you to anyone coming that way. I miss Virginia! (Letter of thanks by mail)

We arrived home safe and contented! We would certainly recommend your home. I do hope to come again and enjoy the peace and solitude. Thank you for the jelly and apple butter! We sincerely enjoyed the week. My husband and son love golfing and played some interesting courses. We all enjoy hiking and going to the caverns. We needed a break from the norm and your lovely home certainly provided it! Your hospitality was ever present. Thanks so much for a wonderful week. (Taken from our Guest Book)

Thank you so much for letting us stay at your beautiful home. It was so comfortable and we had everything we needed here. Your guest book that you put together was very helpful. This place was beautiful and our windows just were great to see the beautiful mountains. Thanks again for your hospitality and your kindness. (From our Guest Book)

The grounds and flowers are SO beautiful! Every one of us loves it! We used your guest book and went to church in Woodstock and then to Sunday dinner at the Strasburg Hotel. We want to tour the Massanutten Military Academy and see the caverns --- We are having a great time! (Second day of stay)

We just want to thank you for sharing your home with us. We were so comfortable and it was more like visiting the home of an old friend than "renting a place." The entire area is beautiful but we especially liked being in a farming community where you just know there are a lot of good people. Thanks again, we will definitely be back in touch when we visit that area again. (Received By E-mail)

A big thank you to Judy & Doug! Very quickly, the rock house felt like home. Doug had kindly hung the icicle lights and had left us wood for a fire. There was warm bread and applebutter, which served as our dinner perfectly. We lit a fire with branches and I took a bubble bath. The next day we both got library books and settled in to relaxing. We went out and chopped down a live tree and pretended that Judy's charming ornaments were our own family keepsakes. It began to snow and we watched the woods fill up with snow. We played Christmas carols and fed the beautiful birds. Ah, the birds! Stars and sunsets and glorious dawns and the silence. Surrounded on all sides by nature and beauty, pristine white church, majestic black stallions. Above all, we had our Holiday Inn, our home for the holidays. Len and I counted our blessings every day! What a beautiful, peaceful and relaxing way to spend our vacation! We found your house cozy and warm. Terry made a fire every evening. We enjoyed taking walks around the neighborhood. The weather was just perfect all week and the trees were glowing with bright colors. We enjoyed the Caverns and just riding around in our truck over the country-side. We also got to see the little chipmunks on the front porch -- we don't see them in Florida. We visited George Washington's birth place and the Skyline Drive where we saw some deer. Thank you! We really did enjoy ourselves! God Bless! (From our guest book)

Thank you so much for your great hospitality! We truly enjoyed our time here as your guests. We had such an amazing time! The house is fantastic, so cozy. Everything is thought of just perfectly. You did a really great job making it so nice and comfortable and thank you for all the games and books that are there. It was the most gorgeous Indian summer, so sunny, clear and warm. We did a lot of walks, played baseball and frizbee in the yard. We BBQ'd, played games and watched movies. Again, thank you so much -- I am just so happy we rented the house from you. We will definitely try to come back. It sure is a lovely place. We did some walking and biking trails and my brother and his daughter Barbara loved the views, the relaxing quiet and the tours of the Shenandoah Caverns and Culture Frontier Farms at Staunton. We also enjoyed your recommended restaurants. Thanks so much for being so gracious in welcoming us to your lovely home. We WILL keep in touch and will plan a return trip! (From our guest book)
