Excellent Vacation Home

Guest: Joy (Kailua Kona, HI)
Date of Stay: 09/23/11 Review Submitted: 10/17/11

This was our first time to New England and I have to say Vermont is the most beautiful state in the several that we visited. Monument House was an absolutely gorgeous home filled with wonderful antiques and with everything you could ever want. All we needed was our food and clothes. We loved Old Bennington, Manchester and Burlington...all had its' own character and personality. We had two toddlers with us, ages 2 and 4 and Monuent House provided toys, games and the best back yard that two little boys could ever want to play in. I must say my favorite bedroom and the one my husband and I slept in while were there was the sleeping porch. It's surrounded by screen and as soon as you'd open your eyes you were surrounded by the most beautiful trees with the sun shining so slightly through them. We felt like we were sleeping in a tree house. We came all the way from Hawaii and if we ever go back to Vermont again, there would be no other place I'd want stay. Thank you so much for a great experience and for all your help for the many months we planned our trip. Mahalo and Aloha...until we meet (or email) again.

Owner response:Thank you for your wonderful review. We are so honored that you chose Monument House for your mainland New England vacation. Thank you for having confidence to come to Vermont, mere weeks after Hurricane Irene. Shows that Hawaiians share Vermonters' pluck! Please return some day. Lucy

Happy Memories in Beautiful Home

Antiques abound throughout this home, except kitchen, which has all modern appliances and equipment. Owner provides tips on house, nearby attractions, shopping, restaurants. A favorite place was the spacious back porch, overlooking lush landscaped back yard. Within walking distance to Bennington Monument, Bennington Museum, and Old First Church; and close to downtown. Highly recomment this rental property.

The Reason You Use VRBO.com!

Guest: Ted (Beirut, Lebanon (U.S. expatriate))
Date of Stay: 06/23/11 Review Submitted: 07/24/11

I can't say enough great things about this house. It really is everything that you would look for in a house on this website, and it's by far the best home I've ever rented on vrbo.com. By far. But for the sake of this review, I'll focus on just three of my three favorite aspects: its character, location, and comfort. First of all, this house really has character. It's historic -- well over a hundred years old -- and is full of the kind of nooks and crannies that you would expect from a home this old. And the owner has really done a fantastic job of accentuating these; the library is stocked with hundred-year-books, the rooms are full of charming paintings and decorations that really work (the owner knows how to decorate), and the garden is well-kept and BEAUTIFUL. We really felt at home during our entire stay, and when the time came to leave, we didn't want to. The location is also perfect -- less than a block from the Bennington Battle Monument, and walking distance from downtown Bennington. Which is so charming! It's full of great restaurants, cool stores, and cute historic buildings. The house itself has a beautiful view of green mountains during the summer, a view that I'm sure would be just as picturesque (if not more so) during the other three seasons. I was worried we would run out of things to do during our five days here, but in all honesty we didn't even have time to do all of the things we planned to do. Finally, it's worth pointing out how comfortable the home is -- thanks to the constant attention and care of the owner. She's got a closet full of food items that guests are welcome to use, and called us the night we arrived to make sure we had everything we needed. She even has a Keurig single-serving coffee maker for guests to use, with a shelf full of different types of coffee that you can use with it. I have never, ever stayed in a vrbo.com home where the owner was so attentive to guests' needs, and it makes a huge difference. If you are trying to decide between this home and another, do yourself a favor and pick this one. You won't regret it. (Just don't come when we want to come back!)

Owner response:We are blushing at your praise! We want our guests to feel welcome as if it were their home too. Bennington is such a fantastic community, something for everyone! We are flattered you selected Monument House, and enjoyed its charm as much as we have. We look forward to your return. Lucy

Well Organized Home

Guest: Susan (Dover, Pennsylvania)
Date of Stay: 05/15/11 Review Submitted: 05/25/11

This home full of antiques is well organized with everything you would need for a great vacation. Most places to visit in a four state area of New York, Mass, New Hamsphire and of course Vermont are within several minutes to several hours. The ability for walking in the area, sidewalks etc is very helpful. The process for payment of the rent and information necessary to enjoy the house is readily available. The heat, hot water, cooking is all very sufficient. I would come to this home again.

Owner response:Thank you, Susan for your gracious review. We are pleased that you enjoyed Monument House with you and your family. Please come again! Lucy

Great old house, great owner!

Guest: S (Boston, MA)
Date of Stay: 04/30/11 Review Submitted: 05/23/11

We came up for the inaugural Bennington Race Weekend- a two day bicycle stage race held in Bennington and surrounding (very hilly) towns. Our stay at the monument house surpassed all of our expectations- the old house was clean, in superb shape, and has some great character that really made the weekend special- even though we're a bike team just trying to get enough sleep to race the next day doesn't mean that we can't appreciate some Vermont charm during the downtime! This beats staying at your typical motel anytime. The owner was attentive and responded to all of our questions very quickly- hats off to her and the Bennington locals for making us feel welcome. I will definitely come back to Bennington (next time with my Fiance or small group of friends before next year's race!) in part due to our great stay at the Monument house.

Owner response:Thank you! It was a pleasure to host this fine bike team. They were easy to work with and the house was in great shape after their stay. We look forward to their return for a get away and the second annual Bennington Race Weekend!

Wonderful

We spent a few days here in October 2010 and it was wonderful. We had two small children ( age 2) that loved running in the huge backyard. The kitchen had everything that you could need and we enjoyed many family meals. The fireplace was cozy and there were plenty of blankets to keep us warm. we will be back.

Owner response:Thank you for your kind words. We are thrilled you enjoyed Monument House as much as we do. We look forward to your return.

September Visit

Guest: Dell (Fruitland Park, Florida)
Date of Stay: 09/23/10 Review Submitted: 09/30/10

My family and sister rented this home during our daughter's wedding. There was a total of six staying at this house. It was our first time to Vermont and we were delighted when we arrived at this home! Not only was it charming, it was very clean and well stocked with all necessary amenities. The house had plenty of rooms to roam and very accommodating. The property is beautiful that is resides on and very quiet, historical neighborhood. You can see mountains from the backporch and it makes a very enjoyable spot to have a nightcap. This house is located within minutes from shopping or touring historical areas. I would defintely rent this home again if I were to visit the area again. It really made our stay extra special!

dreamy back yard

Guest: Debby (Summit, NJ)
Date of Stay: 07/01/10 Review Submitted: 07/15/10

The owner was very friendly and helpful, even getting bicycles when I expressed an interest in riding -- unfortunately, the extreme heat wave during our stay, and the steepness of the hills, discouraged me from even trying one! I'm already missing the back porch, where I enjoyed drinking tea and listening to the birds. (I was excited to see a pair of pileated woodpeckers on my last day.) I probably spent even more time in the kitchen, which is bright, comfortable, and easy to cook in. It was novel and interesting to stay in such an old house -- with the wide floor boards, the warren of rooms, the accumulation of books and memorabilia. Anyone with an interest in early American history will find the entire neighborhood fascinating; anyone else will just find it lovely.

Gracious home gracious hosts

Guest: Fred, Moira & Shelley (Central and Eastern Mass.)
Date of Stay: 05/06/10 Review Submitted: 05/17/10

Everything you could possibly think of to make your stay in the Bennington area complete has been provided by the hosts of this lovely home. This is a warm, welcoming and comfortable home with 21st. century conveniences that leave all of its 19th century charm intact. The grounds are beautiful and peaceful. We would have liked weather that was just a little bit warmer to fully enjoy them. The only drawback to our stay was that it was too short. We were reluctant to leave and can't wait to return!

Owner response:We are so glad that Fred, Moira and Shelley chose Monument House for their home base for their nephew's graduation. We wish the weather was warmer, too! We look forward to their return!

We would definitely go back here! Hope to, next year!

Very nice house, quiet, clean, spacious

Guest: Adam77 (New London)
Date of Stay: 02/12/10 Review Submitted: 03/30/10

Very nice place, made a good home base for our Stratton Ski weekend. only downside was that there was a lot of antiques and fragile things, so we had to be very careful throughout the weekend. Might not be great for little kids. But, it was very nice, spacious, enjoyable.

Owner response:We were honored to host a large group of senior Coast Guard Cadets for the Presidents' Day Weekend. We were not their first choice, as we are not immediately adjacent to the ski areas. However, they ultimately choose to stay at Monument House, due to the excellent value. The cadets conducted themselves as the officers they were soon to become. We understand that the antique furnishings may be intimidating to a large group of young cadets on a last time together ski weekend. We so appreciate the care they took while guests at Monument House. We wish them well upon graduation and thank them for their upcoming service.

This is a wonderful house, filled with character. We spent many happy hours browsing the amazing collection of books, then sitting on the porch reading and drinking a glass of wine. The garden is lovely and we enjoyed watching the foxes playing in the lower meadow. The house is in a peaceful location, but is within walking distance (less than 10 mins) of a very good restaurant at the Four Chimneys. We are grateful to Lucy and her family for allowing us to stay in their home and would highly recommend it.

We just returned from a most enjoyable long weekend(Presidents'Day)stay at Monument House! The home is in a wonderful location, just perfect for great walks! While the neighborhood is residential, you are minutes away from shops, restaurants and an interesting museum. Inside, you will feel most comfortable with cozy places to sit and visit or other inviting spots to catch up on your reading. Plenty of room for our party of 7 adults both young and not-as-young! This lovely home has kept the wonderful details of its past while paying attention to modern amenities! The owner was most helpful and patient with answering my questions and with every step in the rental process! We hope to be fortunate enough to return to Monument House!

Monument House proved the perfect headquarters for a mini-family reunion when relatives gathered to celebrate my niece's graduation from Bennington College. Everything about the house is lovely and steeped in history. The battle monument is just one block up the street, and Old North Church, the burial site of poet, Robert Frost, is two blocks in the other direction. In between are beautiful homes, incredible views, and a couple of historical markers to boot. The hostess who owns this property went out of her way to make sure that our stay was all we hoped it would be. We used the fireplace one night, knowing ahead of time where to find wood and how to manage the flue. The kitchen is modern and convenient. Our favorite spot was the beautiful back yard and sitting porch. Flowers bloomed everywhere. A fox trotted by one morning. On another day, we watched from the comfort of the porch as a thunderstorm rolled in. If ever I have the chance to visit Bennington again, I would certainly want to stay at Monument House.

We stayed at the house in October 2007 and loved it! The house has a lot of character and was very comfortable. The garden was great! The location close to Bennington Monument and downtown is also great - we would recommend!
