We were not at all happy with the accommodations at this VRBO in Kennsington, CA. Issues include: • trash strewn all along the drive upon arrival • no soap to wash hands or dishes • tub shower filled with scummy water when used • koi pond looked more like mud pit for mosquito breeding, no fish alive • blow-up bed totally unusable, no pump • tv not usable, no "big" remote in sight • fire alarm or smoke detector, whatever it was, hanging off the wall • roof falling in • bed sheets did not feel, look or smell clean, so obviously not clean • mildewy smell throughout the "cabin" There was no "living room" just two bedrooms and two bathrooms. We ended up vacating the property after 3 nights. Requested refund, but were refused.

We arrived and had no problems. The home was clean and inviting. I would have to agree with some other reviews about the carpet needing cleaned and the rooms aired out. Although, you will not find a better place for the price if visiting the Bay Area. The owners were great in answering all questions and helping set up our stay. Everything in their add is truthful and described well. The only things I would suggest for the owners is that they add blinds to one bedroom as there are none and update the television system with newer tv and cable options. But, that does not take away from the pleasure we had staying there and would definetely do it again. PS- The beds were the best we have ever slept on while traveling!!!!

I read the reviews and as there was one negative I decided to call the owner and see if the issues raised had been dealt with. He assured me they were and promised me a money back if I wasn't satisfied. Anyway the location was great, the home was cute and clean. The drawers all work and the window shade was in place. These issues had been bitterly complained about by a previous guest. The beds were very comfortable and I would stay there again!

Very disappointing. While the location and property are (could be) lovely, the rental is part of the main house - with an unlocked door connecting it to the hall of the main house. There was black mold over one of the bathtubs. The entire place needs carpet cleaning, painting, window cleaning, airing. It smells of mildew/mold. No reading lamps, no dresser in one of the bedrooms, and the other dresser had broken drawers that fell apart when opening. No sink in kitchen - no kitchen counter, no oven, no laundry facilities. The television is a computer program and extremely difficult to use -- Not cable or satellite as listing states. No fish in fishpond, in neglected garden area. The entire property is neglected. We would not return.

Owner response: So sorry you weren't happy. So upon careful inspection I have noted that you are right about a small patch of mold. We have fixed it as well as adding an additional lock on the door to the main house. It was locked one way no its locked both ways. Please note, there really isn't a kitchen. There is a microwave, a toaster, a fridge, coffee/tea pot and an outdoor gas grill as it says in the ad. The garden is spectacular as it shows in the photo so it is. There are fish in the pond but they hide sometimes. There are directions on how to operate the TV and we haven't had anyone else call with problems but we are available 7 days a week if there are problems of any kind.
The unit is very well-appointed to visiting the SF area, assuming you do not want to stay in the city. The unit was clean and looked as described. However, the description does say that this is a private unit. In actuality, the yard is shared with the owners (with just a broken baby gate separating the yards). The owner has dogs who can access this yard and leave their poop. Also, the unit is actually attached to the owner's home, separated simply by a door that is lockable only from the owner's side. Especially given that we have small children, this was not the most comfortable and private feeling for us. We also agree with the previous renter's comments about the tv and the fact that the deposit check is destroyed rather than returned.

Lovely location and excellent value
Lovely location and excellent value
The two bedroom unit is very nice, with a view of the beautiful garden. The beds are indeed very comfortable and the bathrooms spacious. The bus is one block from the property, runs relatively frequent and stops in the heart of Berkeley, as well as the BART station. It would have been nice to have traditional cable or satellite TV versus the podcast TV that was available. I was disappointed that my deposit check was said to have been torn up, rather than returned to me, which is the reason for 4 stars rather than 5 stars. That being said, if compared to a hotel stay in Berkeley, this property is far superior in quality and value, as well as privacy.

We were very relaxed staying there and we slept better than we had in YEARS!!! Your location is peaceful, beautiful and so wonderfully out of the way. Don't think we could stay anywhere else. It was perfect for us and I'm sure, will be again.

Owner response: Thanks for noticing. We went to extra trouble and expense to make sure that those beds are extra comfy. We had one guest tell us they had a $4000.00 mattress and ours was still the most comfortable bed ever! Hope to see you soon and sweet dreams!

Year Purchased: 2006
About the owner: Bodhi and Hayley bought this home in 2006 with the hope of growing into the home. It is a large and gracious home and until we do grow into the home we decided it would be fun and logical use of the home and our time to offer it up to travelers.
Why the Owner Chose Berkeley:
We bought in this area because it has everything from world class dining to world class entertainment. It has all the advantages of a big city but has the feel of a small European Town.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We are 25 minutes to San Francisco, 1 mile to a massive park which has endless miles of hiking and biking trails, Views of the Golden Gate and SF, Lakes, Streams, Fishing, golfing, miniature steam train rides for the kids, a petting zoo and a Merry Go Round.
