Perfect Spring Weekend!

Guest: Sheila (Northampton, MA)
Date of Stay: 05/10/12 Review Submitted: 05/14/12

My family of eight stayed at the Berg House to celebrate a full weekend of birthdays, a Macalester College graduation, and Mother's Day. It was the perfect spot to take advantage of all that Saint Paul has to offer. The home is charming, clean, and well-appointed and is convenient to all the shops, restaurants, campuses, and sights in Saint Paul. Ideal springtime weather allowed us to enjoy the terrace outdoors for casual meals and an elegant dining room was the focal point of our post-commencement reception. Bedroom and bathroom space was ample and the kitchen was fully equipped. The owners were very responsive to our inquiries when making our travel arrangements. We were thrilled to find this lovely home and hope to return soon!

I stayed at the Berg House in St. Paul, MN during my son's graduation. We enjoyed the staying in this lovely home. We cooked when there was adequate time and ate out when we were rushed. The beds were comfortable. I would stay there again if I were to return to the city.

Great old house in convenient neighborhood

Guest: WV artist (East West Virgina)
Date of Stay: 04/18/12 Review Submitted: 04/30/12

This house is in a great neighborhood, convenient to downtown St.P. with a car (5 minutes) walking is certainly possible, downhill all the way to center of downtown. Quiet urban neighborhood. Nice Victorian, old house with wood floors. Comfortable, appointed with antiques. Easy to use gas fireplace. Great grocery co-op within walking distance. Big kitchen, plenty of dishes, adequately appointed kitchen for light cooking, great dining room table. Lovely, large main bathroom upstairs with claw-foot tub is not part of a suite. Sumptiously generous with towels and bedding. Lovely back yard patio with table and chairs. Charcoal grill. Helpful owners, very responsive. Slept one couple and three singles comfortably (five total).

This house was just lovely! It was scrupulously clean, bright, cheerful and well-appointed. The owners were easy to deal with and responsive, the location was handy and the whole process was without hassle! The house is big and homey. It's well-organized with everything you might need at hand. It's clear that our comfort was upmost in the caretaker's thoughts. We recommend the Garrison Keillor bookstore, which is a nice walk away! I would absolutely recommend this property! Enjoy!

Christmas Holiday Vacation Home

Guest: Susan (Sierra Madre, CA)
Date of Stay: 12/28/11 Review Submitted: 01/04/12

My family of 4 was very comfortable. The house felt like home immediately. I especially appreciated the numerous plates, silverware, glasses provided. It was great for dinner time entertaining. The couches and beds were very comfortable. The fireplace helped make the home cozy. We liked the Christmas lights and poinsettia plant too. The property was clean. There were some signs of wear on the kitchen counter and carpet on the stairs, which just added to the charm. The market and restaurants are within walking distance. The owner responded quickly to communications. I highly recommend this rental.

We recently stayed at the Berg House while attending on an extended business trip in St. Paul. The house is a lovely retreat to return to after a busy day. It's situated in a nice neighborhood and within walking distance to great local shops and restaurants. Plus there's a wonderful co-op grocery store just around the corner! And the owners are VERY responsive. I highly recommend the Berg House.

We enjoyed shopping at the nearby market and were close to other great shopping areas. I would highly recommend renting this home to anyone visiting the Twin Cities. Wonderful experience!

Date of Stay: 07/19/11 Review Submitted: 07/22/11

Our party was made up of six women in their sixties who had gone to college together. The Berg House has a great kitchen, very modern appliances, lots of counter space, huge bathroom upstairs, and is in a nice quiet neighborhood. The property was very clean and well-maintained. We purchased several of our meals at the Mississippi Market and were very pleased with the food. The general neighborhood is fabulous - lots of wonderful restaurants, shopping, and historic homes. The weather was exceptionally hot and humid, but the air conditioners in the house worked very well. The University of Minnesota Showboat is not far away and seeing a play there is a great summer activity. We contacted the owner to ask one slight favor and he was very accommodating. We couldn't have been more pleased.

What a perfect spot! Svein and Olga, you have created a sublime place to "get away from it all" right in the heart of the great city of St. Paul. Your communication with us throughout was thorough and welcoming, which put our minds at ease for renting our first VRBO. From the Berg House, we had access to everything we needed. Within a 10 to 15 minute walk, we were able visit all the nearby shops and restaurants on Selby and Grand. The market we frequented was less than a five minute walk! Our nightly strolls took us all over historic Summit Avenue and down to the famous Cathedral. We were able to get lots of work done as well, thanks to the aid of an office and high-speed internet. The home was perfectly outfitted for our needs with lots of cozy towels, a comfy king-sized bed, and a kitchen with all the basic tools. We had such a nice time, we only wish we could have stayed longer! Thanks for providing such a welcoming place--a home away from home.

Lovely home

Guest: Dave (Ithaca, NY)
Date of Stay: 06/24/11 Review Submitted: 07/11/11

The Berg house is a nice property in a residential section of Saint Paul. The interior is well furnished, with hardwood floors, high ceilings, and plenty of natural light. The kitchen is fully equipped, and there is a small backyard patio for relaxing outdoors. The bedrooms are of average size, but very comfortable. The location is excellent: residential, and so generally quiet, yet only a few minutes walk to a variety of restaurants, bars, grocery stores, etc. It means you can leave the car at home if you are looking for an evening out. I'd recommend this rental for a family or group of friends looking for something a little different than a downtown Minneapolis hotel, yet who still want to retain some of the amenities of city life.

I Recommend the Berg House to Anyone!

Guest: Mother of Three Under Five (New Haven, CT)
Date of Stay: 06/16/11 Review Submitted: 06/23/11

We had a wonderful experience staying at the Berg house. The house is beautiful (just as it looks in the pictures) and has spacious first and second floors. Towels and linens were plentiful and clean. The kitchen was well-equipped. Cable television (with many channels!) worked as instructed, as did wireless Internet. The house is extremely close to an organic market, located on Selby Ave, which also has many nice restaurants and shops. The house is also close to Grand Ave, which also has many nice stores. I especially recommend the house to anyone with small children. There are two low-to-the-ground twin beds, a crib (with bumper and sheets) for the baby, a high chair, and even some toys (wooden blocks, alphabet blocks, a toy kitchen) which kept my children entertained for hours. There is also a marvelous playground, with swings and slides and jungle gyms, just across the street. Svein (the owner) could not have been nicer or more helpful in answering my many questions. He always responded to my emails immediately and was extremely accommodating: letting us check in a little early and leave a little late, making sure the high chair had been brought up from the basement before our arrival, etc. He even emailed me the evening of our arrival to check that we had checked in with no problems and to inquire as to whether we had any questions or concerns. We were very happy with our experience and certainly hope to stay at the Berg house again when we are next in St. Paul.

Summer Family Fun

Guest: Randy (Saint Davids, PA)
Date of Stay: 06/02/11 Review Submitted: 06/13/11

This Victorian era house felt like a home away-from-home for our 5 day stay. It offered plenty of space for both us and local relatives to congregate, and was clean and well maintained. We could see that the owners still treated the house as if they still lived there themselves. Everything we needed to know was on the associated web site and the owners communicated as needed by e-mail and phone in a friendly and helpful manner, making us feel like welcome guests. We would not hesitate to stay here again, and recommend the property to anyone staying in the area.

My husband, sons (8 and 4) and I spent a week here for Spring Break (2011) (hey, we're from Chicago and the weather was terrific!). First, the Twin Cities are a great place for families - great museums, zoos, outdoor recreation, etc. Second, the Berg House is such a nice balance of quiet neighborhood living (walk to stores, pubs and bakeries), and close proximity to all the big fun. Third, the house itself is lovely - old architectural details, lots of room, VERY clean, and so many extras. And finally, as experienced house renters I can honestly say owners Svein and Olga have been the most responsive and helpful people with whom we have ever worked. Thanks!

March 2011 Stay at the Berg House

Guest: Badger Fan (Stevens Point, WI)
Date of Stay: 03/11/11 Review Submitted: 03/16/11

We spent a few days in St. Paul at the Berg House. It was exactly as advertised. Very convenient to I-94 and the Twin Cities area. The co-op that the Berg's recommend for groceries had fresh produce and a wonderful deli. The mansions on Summit Avenue were within walking distance as were the shops and restaurants on Grand Avenue. It was only a couple miles from the State Capitol and 1.5 miles from historic St. Paul's Cathedral. We toured both and would recommend them. My daughter liked the layout of the house so well that we videotaped it so that she can duplicate it in her "dream home" some day.

Winter Vacation Gone Wrong

Guest: Travelling with Baby (MN)
Date of Stay: 01/17/11 Review Submitted: 01/27/11

Having seen all the previous good reviews we were excited about this place. Problems began however from the moment we arrived. I'll cut right to the chase however: we were robbed while staying here! Our car was parked IN the garage. Someone broke in from the back alley into the backyard, got into the garage and stole several valuables from the car. A friend staying with us was in the kitchen, heard noises, went outside and saw the guy running off with her stuff. The police were called but say that its unlikely anything will be recovered. The really scary thing is that if someone can enter the backyard, there is not much to prevent them from entering the house (the alarm system we found out isn't hooked up). All that separates the backyard from the alley is an unsecured wooden gate. There were also cleanliness issues. We found a used bandaid sticking to the bedlinen under the comforter, making us question whether the linen had been changed at all between occupants, so we had to wash the linen ourselves for peace of mind; not the way one likes to begin a vacation. After the burglary, we did not feel comfortable staying there and left that night for a hotel. The icing on the cake after all this was that the owners refused to give a refund saying that these things happen, it was not their responsibility and they cannot be faulted (they offered a fraction of the amount back). I would think providing a clean and secure home would be the first responsibility. They even had the nerve to charge us a cleaning fee. So needless to say, we will not be staying here again.

Owner response:It is a sad fact of modern life, but break-ins do happen in cities and elsewhere. We were very sorry to hear that this had happened in our garage. This is the first time we've had a break-in in our garage since we bought the property in 2005 (the garage is separate from the house, and we've never had anyone try to break into the house, knock on wood!), and hopefully the last. To address the issue we have added a new lock to the wooden gate, so that it is possible to lock it from the inside. We’ve also upgraded the alarm system. Still, guests should be advised to never leave valuables in a car, even if it is parked in the garage. Re. the cleanliness issue, we do strive to keep the house as clean as possible, which I think the other reviewers will attest to. In this case a band aid must have stuck to the sheet without our housekeeper noticing. While this is unfortunate, I can guarantee that the sheets (and unwanted band aid) were thoroughly washed on high temperature. We work hard to make sure that staying in the Berg House is a pleasant and enjoyable experience. While I think we have achieved that 99% of the time, I am sorry to acknowledge that we weren’t able to find a solution that worked for both parties for this particular guest. Warm regards, Svein Owner

Guest: Kay (Brainerd, MN)
Date of Stay: 12/26/10 Review Submitted: 01/02/11

Owner and caretaker were very responsive to questions and concerns. We found the front door locking mechanism convenient. Kids' toys and books came in handy, as did the stepstool and mini-table for our toddler. The house is also infant-friendly with a REAL crib and high chair. Location is very convenient - close to downtown, attractions, and other St. Paul neighborhoods. We LOVED having the natural foods grocery store in easy walking distance. Attractions: We'd highly recommend Como Zoo (even in the winter), the Science Museum, and gawking at the mansions on nearby Summit Ave. There is also a nice-looking playground within sight of the house (though we didn't have an opportunity to use it) and tons of restaurants to choose from. We also loved the gas fireplace on cold winter nights. The beds were comfortable, but we used our own pillows. We also would have liked to have used the security system. Overall I would recommend this house to friends & family.

We enjoyed the roomy, charming Berg home for several days over Thanksgiving. The spacious kitchen and large dining room and table were great for our family. We have four grown children and their spouses that joined us for Thanksgiving Day and we had plenty of room. The two full bathrooms and the spacious bedrooms made for a very comfortable stay. There was off street parking and the Berg home was easy to find and in a quiet neighborhood. Just wish we could have enjoyed the cozy patio outside! Svein and Olga were very accomodating and easy to work with.

Guest: Kelly (Seattle)
Date of Stay: 11/12/10 Review Submitted: 11/18/10

I recently stayed for the weekend with some old friends. It was the perfect place for friends to gather around the fireplace and reconnect, while we watching the snow fall outside the tall front windows. The house was wonderful with everything you need to make a great dinner and to sleep in late. The bathroom was beautiful and we all wish we had more time there to enjoy the old claw foot tub. Thanks to Svein and Olga for providing us with a great home so close to the shops on Grand! I was most impressed when I got an email, text and phone call from Svein to remind us about the emergency snow plow routes, to ensure we didn't get our car towed. He went above and beyond to make sure our stay was awesome. Also enjoyed have a "neighbor" friend of theirs to call in case of questions. He was prompt to respond, even though he was out of town too. I will definately refer this home to friends and other other family who are looking for a home away from home!

We could not have been happier with our choice to stay at the Berg House in St. Paul for 6 nights. My daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren, ages 2 and 9 months flew from South Carolina for her brothers wedding. The house was very children friendly, crib, toys and even a nice wooden highchair. The location was perfect, close to the airport and downtown St. Paul where the wedding took place. We were able to walk to several restaurants in the area and loved shopping at the Co-op down the street. The house was very clean, and well stocked with everything we needed, including laundry soap for washing the children's pj's etc. The large dining room was perfect for entertaining our extended family. Beautiful dishes, wine glasses which we used often to celebrate. I would recommend staying at the Berg House to anyone who has a short or extended stay in the St. Paul area. Barbara Duluth Minnesota

Stay at Berg House October 2010

We enjoyed our stay at the Berg House. It was very accessible to interstate and within walking distance to Grand Avenue and Summit Avenues - for restaurants, shopping and just walking. We enjoy Cafe Latte - a family favorite. We rented the house for a week for pre-wedding events for our daughter. All appliances worked and the house was - as it states - fully furnished. We would rent again and also recommend it to our friends. The Bergs were very easy to work with, as well as their housekeeper and maintenance man. Answered phone calls and questions ASAP. Thanks again for a wonderful stay.

We would definitely stay at the Berg House again any time.

We were back in Minnesota after a 24 year absence for a family wedding/reunion. My wife and I and her brother and parents rented the Berg House. It was perfect for us. Very well appointed, extremely clean, and very spacious. We entertained over 20 people with no problems. The location is excellent with Summit Ave. and Grand Ave. just to the South and Selby just to the north. Only 15 easy minutes from the airport. If you rent the Berg House, you will NOT be dissappointed.

Our family of 6 rented this beautiful home from the Bergs. Svein and Olga were easy to work with, very responsive to emailed questions. The location of the house could not be better. Easy strolls to the Cathedral and Summit Ave as well as the shops and restaurants on Grand. Our family truly benefited from the closeness to the Mississippi Market - only a block and a half away - since we could get great food to bring back to the house to eat. There is also a park just across the road with basketball court, tennis courts and playground. We hope to return to St Paul and would absolutely love to stay at the Berg house again.

We loved every minute of our stay at the Berg House. We were in St. Paul for our daughter's wedding and our eight adults (parents, 3 of her siblings and their spouses) fit easily without feeling at all crowded. Wonderfully spacious, easy-to-cook-in, and well-stocked kitchen (plentiful dishes, pots and pans, wine and regular glassware, blender, toaster, coffee maker, cookie sheets, wine opener, whisks and all sorts of utensils, paper towels, storage bags, etc.) -- also a random collection of spices and other condiments Abundant towels and bedding, washer & dryer, iron and ironing board. Delightful outside area. Lovely plantings. While no central air, window units cooled house well, even in high eighty-degree temps. Location ideal - just off 94, blocks from Summit and Grand. Good walking area. The Muddy Pig, a great local pub, is just 2 blocks away. The house felt comfortable and alive (so much nicer than sterile, cold hotel rooms). There was a sense that all who had stayed previously had left behind a caring touch of themselves—from the open bottle of Wild Turkey in the living room cabinet to the packing tape in the kitchen drawer to the wine vinegar in the cupboard. While we had no children, it was a very child-friendly home. Our one 4 1/2-yr-old visitor loved the wooden kitchen set on the back porch. Svein was exceptionally helpful with any questions that we had. The house was ready and waiting for us when we arrived--clean, beds made up, fresh flowers in the dining room. The code lock was easy and convenient to use. Internet access worked well. We felt welcomed and very at home. We wouldn't hesitate to stay again.

The VRBO description and other positive comments are all accurate. The owners are incredibly responsive. The kitchen is surprising well stocked (cookware, dishshes, knives) for a rental property. We were able to host two lunch/dinner gatherings for 12 comfortably. The house is very child friendly, with wooden toys, sidewalk chalk (fun for adults too) and a crib. The patio out back is lovely and private. On street parking is easy and ample. Fun diverse neighborhood, across the street from a playground and walking distance to shops, resturants and excellent ice cream shop. The four of us who stayed here would highly recommend this house.

Great "home away from home." The location made sightseeing sooo easy - on foot and in the car. Many fine restaurants available within walking distance. House was clean and well maintained - even had blueberries growing on a bush right outside the window! We were very comfortable. One thing the renters need to know - park at least 20 feet from the intersection or you will get a parking citation. We had to pay a $30 ticket for parking only 11 feet away.

We enjoyed 4 nights at the lovely and comfortable Berg House. What an ideal spot in our favorite historic neighborhood! Perfect location for walks among the great old homes and to many area restaurants and shops. We look forward to another stay and highly recommend this great home and its hospitable owners.

My husband and I spent three nights at the Berg House and enjoyed everything about it. It is a spacious home and has everything one could possibly need. The home is in a beautiful, interesting, and quiet neighborhood. At the same time, it is very close to all the amenities. We especially enjoyed the Co-op grocery store which was only a three minute walk away. This home is peaceful, cosy, and elegant and if we are ever in St. Paul again we will certainly stay at The Berg House.

The Berg House proved to be the perfect spot for a week long Christmas gathering. Three different families filled the house and not one complaint about anything! The location was perfect as we could walk anywhere we neeeded to go. The house was well stocked with every need and beautifully clean upon our arrival. A snowy Christmas Eve in a warm and cozy house in a beautiful old neighborhood made for a perfect stay at The Berg House. Owner was very pleaseant to deal with. Thank you for a wonderful Berg House Christmas!

I would definitely recommend staying at the Berg House. A group of 8 of us stayed there from the end of December through the new year. There was plenty of room for us, especially in the huge dining room. The location was perfect, just minutes away from groceries and shopping. We had a great time, and spent most of it at the house. It is a warm, cozy house, even when the temperature is -11 outside. The Bergs were very easy to work with and their house is beautiful.

We've stayed at the Berg house twice in the last 18 months. What a delight! The house is close to shopping, food, downtown, and in our case close to family. We retreated to the house several times in between family functions and even entertained family in the spacious dining room one evening after cooking in the well appointed kitchen. This might just become our extra lodging 'headquarters' in the Twin Cities!

The Berg house really captures the charm of the Saint Paul area. I stayed with some old friends for a girls weekend. Whether we were having a glass of wine by the fireplace or playing games and visiting around the dining room table it was perfect. The big kitchen, comfy beds and two bathrooms were a plus. We also enjoyed an afternoon of shopping on Grand Ave. which was just minutes away. The weekend was fun, relaxing and stress-free. Thanks for sharing your home with us!

My family and I stayed in your beautiful home during my son's wedding celebrations. The house provided a nice escape from the festivities to relax and rest. We will definitely stay at the Berg home again when we visit St. Paul!

We rented this property for two weeks in 2009 and found it to be very comfortable. The house is in a very quiet area as described and the house is very spacious. We would love to use the house again if we return to Minnesota.

We thoroughly enjoyed the Berg House. It worked out very well for us ( 3 adults and 2 teenagers) and we were able to have family stop by and see us and not feel crowded. The convenience to Grand Ave. and shops and restaurants was great, as well as access to do laundry and use of the internet. A very positive experience!

The Berg House provided an ideal location for a family reunion which required numerous trips to the Minneapolis/St. Paul airport. The home was spotless, well appointed, and extremely comfortable. It was home away from home! The neighborhood provided all of our shopping needs, fun browsing, and beautiful places to walk and run. It will be my first choice for future visits to the Twin Cities!

We rented the Berg house in July for a week with my brother and his wife. The house was a wonderful home away from home, appointed to the highest standard. We had a great week, in a great house, in a wonderful neighborhood.

From the flowers planted on the property to the claw footed tub in the upstairs bathroom, Berg house oozes charm. We had three adults and two teens in our party and found the house to be quite roomy. The neighborhood was quiet, so the whole atmosphere of the house was one of privacy. The shops and restaurants within walking distance were a plus.

The house is a lovely alternative to a hotel. It was especially child friendly with a crib and high chair, a selection of puzzles & books, a small trampoline in the backyard and a playground across the street.
