LOCATED IN THE HISTORIC DISTRICT OF MENDOCINO, unlike many 'Mendocino' listings that are miles from town. The Tower offers well-appointed accommodations for one to four with pretty garden and ocean views. Stretch your travel budget by preparing some of your meals in the cheerful kitchen or walk to one of the fine local restaurants for a special brunch or dinner. The fenced garden creates a peaceful environment and accommodates supervised pets and children. Smoke-Free environment. Check our website (below) for additional photos.
At this writing, northbound whale sightings are an occasional event. At the Botanical garden, migrating birds are adding to the floral displays. The rhododendrons are bursting with buds and the bluffs are prime for a display of spring color in the next few weeks.

The house is cozy and comfy. The bed was comfortable, although a bit high for my 4'11' frame. The kitchen was well stocked for what we did, cereal and yogurt for breakfast and take out for dinner. The garden was full of blooms. The views from the roof were absolutely incredible. I did have a few nit pick items. Some of the towels in the bathroom were musty smelling. The kitchen table was wobbly and a round table would fit in there better. My biggest pick was the light switches. There were so many of them and sometimes we had no idea what they operated. The porch light was in the bathroom (go figure) and one night it took us a while to figure out which switch operated the ceiling fan in the bedroom. And speaking of bedrooms, I wouldn't call the third floor room a bedroom. Our second home was the Harvest Market just down the street and the larger store in Ft Bragg. They had everything we needed, including a wonderful selection of prepared foods and wine. Don't miss the Botanical Gardens and Glass Beach in Ft. Bragg. We also appreciated the owner's suggestions on where to eat in Mendocino and interesting spots to stop at on the way from SFO to Mendocino. This is a place I want to come back to, just to hang out and enjoy the house and garden.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Thank you for your kind words. We're glad you enjoyed your stay in the Tower and look forward to seeing you again. We also appreciate your very helpful "nit picks." We've fixed the wobbly antique table with a thin shim in the base, re-labeled the fan and porch light switches by the tv (as well as the one by the bathroom door), and rewashed all the towels after discarding what was left of our experiment with a new detergent that turned out to be more "eco-friendly" than effective. If you find anything on your next visit, please let us know right away so we can make it right. Thanks again for the feedback.

We love this place and can't say enough good things about it ... time slows down, you feel relaxed, you can walk everywhere - to town and to the ocean for whale watching, to the theater across the street. We first stayed here 10 years ago for our honeymoon which was lovely, romantic, and all-around perfect being walking distance to so many great restaurants and shops. Now, 10 years later we returned for our anniversary with our 2 elementary school age girls. Can't believe it took us so long to get back. This trip was fun in it's own way as we could let our girls (ages 7 & 9) explore many areas on their own. They loved their independence and each day we sent them to the store on their own for various errands. Instead of dinners out, we did lunches out and cooked in the Water Tower each night. The Water Tower is a magical place and it's even more a gem being so close to everything in Mendocino. We parked our car the day we arrived and only got back in it the day we left. Our girls had a blast and it was a great week away. We hope to get back soon!!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.

We've stayed at the Tower a few times and love it. It's reasonably priced, comfortable and well appointed, especially for a small family (a second couple would sleep in the fold-out couch downstairs), with kitchen facilities that enable guests to dine in if they wish. The location is perfect: it's on a quiet street where one can walk easily to the Mendocino shops within a couple of minutes.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with young children.

Owner response: Thanks for pointing out some of the Tower's benefits for small families and other traveling companions. We try to keep it well-equipped so that people can cook some of their meals together and linger over the meal. I'm glad that worked for your family. We look forward to seeing you again...and perhaps hearing a Ha'Penny performance of Celtic music one of these days.

Just returned from a great 3 night stay in the Water Tower. The place is very clean and well stocked - we didn't lack for anything. We were delighted with how private and quiet the unit is even though we were right in town. The location makes it easy to walk anywhere you want to go in the Village. The fact that our dog was also welcome made the trip perfect. We highly recommend going up to the top of the Tower...the view is amazing.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, girls getaway.
Owner response: Many thanks for choosing the Tower for your visit to Mendocino. We agree that being able to walk everywhere is one of the nicest things about being right in the Village. Glad you enjoyed it.

The Tower is the perfect retreat for a stay in Mendocino. We loved that it was in the village and a couple of blocks away from the Mendocino Headlands We parked our car and walked everywhere. Restaurants, a fine grocery, and the Pacific ocean are easy walks away. The Tower is a cozy, quiet, private retreat. We loved sitting on the porch enjoying the beautiful fenced- in garden which our dog enjoyed too. We spent a wonderful week here and hope to return soon.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children.

We just did 3 nights in the Tower, celebrating an anniversary and a birthday. We loved the viewing deck on top; the bed was perfectly fine; we enjoyed having the kitchen and living room... but best of all, I think, is the complete sense of privacy in that much space. I would not think twice about staying there again-- it's a winner! SW WashingtonRecommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, pet owners, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Thanks so much for your review. We're glad you had such gorgeous weather to enjoy the garden and views from the viewing deck.

I have stayed often at The Water Tower over the last seven years: it is my go-to place in the Mendocino area! As a writer, it affords me quiet and comfort. I love being able to walk to town and sea. The gardens around the tower are unbelievably gorgeous. I can't recommend it highly enough!Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children.
Owner response: Thank you for your kind words. We always enjoy your visits and the contributions you and other guests make to our local writer's community through their teaching and public readings. I wish I could include your name and the title of your recent collection of poetry, but if others would like this information they can e-mail me and I'll be happy to provide it.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1989
About the owner: Innkeepers Don and Wendy Roberts purchased the historic Bever House in 1989 and re-built the adjacent water tower two years later as a unique guest house in the heart of Mendocino's National Historic District. Recently retired from Stanford University's Communiction Department, Don continues his writing and consults on children's television program. Wendy applies her non-profit management skills to various local endeavors and serves on the town's historic review board.
Why the Owner Chose Mendocino:
Living near the ocean has always been a priority for us and the Village of Mendocino won our hearts because of the spectacular bluff top setting and the rural community with its strong focus on the arts and on preservation of the town and its natural environment. It's a privilege to live here and welcome others to this very special place.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Staying in the heart of Mendocino Village allows our guests to enjoy its scenic beauty and share the slower pace and peaceful spirit of our rural community. Comfortable shoes are welcome wherever one goes...from one of the excellent restaurants, to a whale watching cruise, a hike up Big River, a Music Festival concert, Film Festival screening, Writer's Conference seminar...or just prop them up on our tree stump 'footrest' and lounge on the Tower porch with a good book.
