The historic King Cabin in Eldora, Colorado gives you the opportunity to enjoy all that the Rocky Mountains have to offer while you stay in a remarkable dwelling from an earlier era. Whether you are seeking to hike, bike, climb, ski, snowshoe, photograph wildflowers and wildlife, or simply relax in a cabin and town that recall earlier times, King Cabin will meet your needs. Built as a miner’s cabin in the 1890’s, the cabin has been in our family since 1909. While each generation has added to the cabin, all have maintained the original character and spirit from the days when Eldora was a bustling gold mining town. As a National Historic District, the town of Eldora remains truly a mountain mining town from the past, with many historic buildings and little modernity.
The King Cabin serves guests year-round. Summers in this area have been popular with tourists for many decades. Fall attracts visitors who come to the area to view the beautiful changing of the aspen tree leaves. Winter offers visitors the chance to ski and snowboard at Eldora Mountain Resort as well as to cross-country ski or snowshoe in the back country.
The cabin is less than 90 minutes from Denver International airport, 1 hour from downtown Denver, 25 minutes from Boulder, 5 minutes from Nederland and 5 minutes from the Eldora Mountain Resort.
Hiking and biking - The area is rich with hiking trails. You can hike or bike the Caribou Trail from the cabin and a short drive up the valley will take you to the Hessie trailhead or, a few miles further on, the Fourth of July campground and trailhead, both of which are popular jumping-off points into the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area. Bicycles can be rented in Nederland at Happy Trails Bicycle Specialists.
Fishing: The stream that runs through Eldora is stocked annually and is popular with children and fly fishermen both. Barker Reservoir, less than 10 minutes from the cabin, is also popular for fishing.
Skiing -Eldora Mountain resort is a little known jewel. Smaller than other resorts, not a "destination" area, it enjoys the same snow and wonderful skiing as the larger areas. The ski area is skiing, snowboarding, cross country and snowshoe friendly. It receives 300 inches of snow per year and boasts Colorado's best snowmaking system. Coverage is 100% of groomed terrain, more than any other resort in Colorado. The base area of Eldora has an elevation of 9,200 feet above sea level and the top elevation is 10,800 feet. The ski area has 680 acres of skiable terrain and the longest run is 3 miles long! The area is extremely family friendly, with an excellent ski school and affordable ticket prices. They have a separate beginner hill, moderate skiing slopes on the front, and plenty of black diamonds and double black diamonds on the back for the experienced skiers (West Ridge is one of the steepest slopes in the state!).
Backcountry cross country skiing and snowshoeing are also available on many of the local trails and at the ski area. Cross country skis and snowshoes can be rented at Happy Trails in Nederland. Note: in the winter we supply firewood for you to enjoy a relaxing evening is front of the wood stove!
Nederland is the closest town, and has much to offer in the way of restaurants, shops, and stores. The restaurants, cafes, and coffee houses provide a variety of cuisine and dining options and live entertainment is frequently available. The Nederland Visitors Center, located in the center of downtown, is a good source for maps and information on area recreational opportunities. Nederland is served by regularly scheduled daily RTD bus service to and from Boulder.
Nederland offers many opportunities for our guests to enjoy the arts and the area: Frozen Dead Guy Days (March), Joe Colton’s Off Road Adventure Run (June), Nederland High Peaks Art Fair (juried show, end of June), 4th of July parade, fireworks, and Children’s Carnival, Nederland Miners Days (end of July). |
