VRBO Bear stayed here:
This bear adventure brought the blue-eyed bear to beautiful Big Bear Lake in the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California! Situated right on Big Bear Lake’s serene Boulder Bay with its very own private dock, this magnificent 4 bedroom, 3 bath vacation home had everything a bear needed for year round fun.
The two-level chalet style home has two decks that look out on to the crystal waters of Boulder Bay on Big Bear Lake. Inside, you’ll find two stone fireplaces, large sunken living room, flat Screen TVs, a fully equipped kitchen, and dining room. All the beds are cozy and comfortable and there are even two additional sleeping lofts for large family or group gatherings. The mountain décor brings a warm touch of home which is felt in each and every room. The homemade quilts encourage you to snuggle up around the fireplace. Play games at the large dining room table, or soak in the two-person Jacuzzi off the upper deck under the stars. The views from nearly every room are spectacular!
Local activities are endless in any season. The owners provide canoes, kayaks and a pontoon boat for use on the lake. You can take a refreshing swim or try your hand at fishing. Right at your door, there are mountain biking and hiking trails so you can explore the natural flora and fauna. The “village” is just down the road for shopping, strolling and night life. For winter time visits, there are skiing and snowboarding resorts within a very short drive. Also, there’s an Alpine slide and snow play areas nearby for the kids!
Just a quick two hour drive from San Diego or an hour from Orange County or Los Angeles, Big Bear is truly the perfect vacation destination. During my stay, we had all the conveniences for me to feel right at home.

This was our second year in a row at Boulder Bay Chalet for our annual family vacation (14 of us). As mentioned by others in previous reviews this facility is spacious and has a variety of great toys. New to us this year were the 4 paddle boards which were used extensively. With all excellent recreational items on campus the only reason to leave the cabin/house was to go on some amazing hikes or into town. Before leaving we took a family vote about what we want to do next year for our family vacation. The response was unanimous: BOULDER BAY CHALET!!

Pros and Cons to this property
Pros and Cons to this property
This was a really great location with views from the living room and master bedroom. Master bedroom and bath are very nice and have a view deck also. Other bedrooms are OK but a little stuffy without a fan going. Kitchen was really well stocked. It was really nice having all the toys available. The paddle boat got a lot of use, and we took the boat out every day for a spin. We also took out the paddle boards, that was great. Do this early in the am before the water gets choppy. Be careful in the canoe because it can tip over! The boat was nice, but if you are not familiar with starting boats you may have some trouble. The people before us ran the boat out of oil and it took a LONG time for the guys in our group to get it working properly. A bit frustrating, the owners had the boat guy come out to assist, he was out there two minutes said it was fine and left -- but boat still wouldnt go into gear. Once they got the feel/hang of it, then it was fine. It is a very pleasant way to spend the afternoon. Beware a few days before you check in you will get a huge ist of all the things they will charge you for if things get broken. We didnt have any issues and got our full deposit back. Oh - also you pay a large cleaning fee and still have to take all the sheets off the beds, collect all the towels and put them in the laundry and pack your own garbage out. Not happy about that. Overall a good experience (mostly because of all the toys available for use) and we would go there again.

Owner response: There are a couple dozen stuffed bears throughout the house to be used for door stops or back rests. With the bedroom doors propped open and the windows open, the breeze off the lake is wonderful most of the time. The pontoon boat is checked over between each visitor. The directions are very specific to that motor. Most groups like to take advantage of having our assistant show them how to run the boat prior to using it. Our list of things that will cause extra charges grew from theft and destruction. With 600 people using the Boulder Bay Chalet each year, someone is going to miss out on something when things are missing or broken or destroyed. Hence our list is long after the $10,000 repairs resulting from 3 groups that visited in the summer of 2012. There is an option on the bottom of the Rental Contract that says if you don't want to take the garbage to the dump and start the dishwasher and pull the sheets, just add $35 to your rental fee. Since this can cost us as much as $100, that seems fair. Our normal cleaning fee cost us $250 or more but we only charge $225.
Had a wonderful time!
Had a wonderful time!
Took the family for a weekend getaway. We stayed at the Boulder Bay Chalet and had a wonderful time! Having all of the water toys (canoes, pedal boat, pontoon boat, etc.) at your disposal is such a huge perk! Cruising in Boulder Bay in the canoes and pedal boat was a blast for the kids. Taking them fishing on the pontoon was so relaxing and fun. Caught plenty of quality fish. The owner, Nancy, was very accommodating and was very responsive to any questions that I had. The Chalet is very nice and has everything you'll need. The little touches of complimentary items was such a nice gesture. We can't wait to return in the near future! Thanks Nancy for everything!!!

This rental should have a warning sign. Be warned - the owner(s) stoop to accusing renters of property damage when faced with legit complaints about this broken down house. Be sure to take pictures of every room and everything. My family and I followed the house rules to the letter and beyond. We were understanding when they told us the dishwater was broken,,, courteous when we reported how the faucet fell off and released a geyser of water all over all our things... patient when we reported that the DVD didn't work... and trying not to be judgmental when we shared that the kitchen skillets with rusting and toxic from all that teflon peeling off. So imagine our outrage to get accused of $725 of property damage for some bogus old lamp that didn't even turn on and an aging microwave. We answered each charge and feel she has fabricated these ridiculous claims to justify to herself going back on her word to refund some of the money for all the legit issues with the house. Don't be fooled by the "wonderful amenities" on their website. The "stocked gourmet kitchen" needs an over haul. Pots and pans need to be replaced, microwave door doesn't close properly, kitchen faucet, dish washer and blender broken, etc. The BBQ grill was filthy and moldy. The Jacuzzi was small and very noisy in the evening. Since the houses are so close to each other, there was no "peace and quiet". We could here the neighbors party until 3 am when the sheriff came. Their business practices are insulting and very unprofessional. I was overcharged the balance due and was constantly requesting a refund. I also had to remind her to return my security deposit which was promised. It's best to find another rental. You can't say that you haven't been warned

Owner response: Between 500 and 600 guests (those are just the ones reported) enjoy their relaxing vacations and get-a-ways at the Boulder Bay Chalet each year and have since 2007 without problems. This is the third group that has done serious damage, but did not call to make arrangements for the repairs or admit they caused it. I hate dishonesty! These guests were not asked to pay for the costly damages they caused, nor was their Refundable Security Deposit withheld. I had full intention of sending them a $300 check for their incontinences, until the cleaning staff walked in after they had gone and found all the damages that they caused. If you stay at a hotel and you break things, you pay for repairs. Why should a Vacation Rental Home be any different? We go above and beyond for our visitors. Kitchen Faucet: It was one week old. The pull out spray handle came off. They left it in the holder and kept turning on the water? They did not tell us the handyman did not show up until 5 hours after he was suppose to be there. We sent a quick fix so they could continue their vacation. I guess they wanted the handyman with pneumonia to come over and spend 4 hours replacing it. Broken Blender: They handed the repair person blender parts that they had broken moments before and asked her to go get them a new one, right then and did not offer to pay for it. She did and we did not charge for the trip or the new blender. Over-stove Microwave oven: Safety is number 1. The cleaning staff called the minute they stepped in the kitchen after the visitor’s departure, to tell us the stainless steel door would not close and had a big dent in it. It was not like that when the guests arrived. The Play Station was plugged in wrong just like I told them on the phone. If they didn’t know about the lamp shade, how did they know it was the lamp that worked on the wall switch? They just thought the lamp didn’t work. The 6 year shade is one of a set of 3 in the Bear Room where they were so beautiful and elegant with Gold and Silver leafing and when you turned on the light they have bears in a forest scene. We have spent hours trying to find anything comparable; but we can’t.. Part of our information email provides the sheriffs phone number for loud neighboring parties after 10:00pm. Why would they wait until 3:00am to call them? We replace the Teflon pots and pans every 3 to 4 months but we cannot control how people treat them.
KZ Summer Family Vacation
KZ Summer Family Vacation
This was our pick for this years annual family vacation (7 adults, 5 children). It was everything we could have asked for and more. View was breathtaking; cabin/house was immaculate and roomy. Boated the entire family to town on the pontoon boat. We plan to return next year for sure.

We had a wonderful time -- especially with the 4 inches of snow that fell Saturday. The house is nicely decorated and the kitchen had everything we needed and then some. The location was perfect. The view was beautiful to us Texans from the Gulf Coast who are used to flat land and lots of humidity. It was a great three days.
