Live the dream...If you are coming to the Hilo side of the Big Island to see waterfalls and experience the magnificent beauty of Hawaii's tropical wonders then this private and romantic property for you. Save the beach experience for Maui, Kauai or Oahu. With a year round stream, small private lake teaming with fish and a second koi pond right outside your bedroom window this is the tropical Hawaii you only see in movies; unspoiled and totally private, just you and the sights, sounds and smells of a lush green tropical paradise. This home is located in one of the most pristine tropical areas on the Big Island (only two minutes off the main road). Passing through the gates, you drive along a private 425 foot long driveway surrounded by giant tree ferns, 100 ft. tall palms, wild mango and avocado trees and a beautiful year round spring fed stream. This is the first time this unique private estate has been offered as a vacation rental. Don't settle for a B&B and/or sharing a home with owners on the same property. This gated 2 acre property is 100% private...Just you and nature. Come...Live Aloha
This is a lovely 18 year old, 2/bedroom, 2/bath cedar home. It is the perfect romantic location for people who want to get away from it all. Fall asleep to the ramble of the stream running over the boulders and the sounds of the jungle at night then wake to native Hawaiian birds singing and flitting from tree to tree in a stunning tropical forest. It is also very comfortable with 2 couples who want to enjoy the sights and sounds of a tropical paradise.
Build a romantic fire in the fireplace or enjoy the private indoor cedar sauna. The large master bedroom welcomes you with a comfy King size 'Perfect Sleeper' and master bath. Both bathrooms have full size tubs and showers. The second bedroom offers you a Queen Size pillow-top bed.
The master bedroom has a pond just outside the large picture window. Both bedrooms look out onto a beautiful year round stream that runs completely along the perimeter of the property. There is a 79,000 gallon pond, teaming with fish (Talapia & 30 year old Koi) just outside the front door (Sorry no fishing or swimming in the ponds). You can feed the fish if you like, they do have two automatic fish feeder that dispense food to them twice daily but they always enjoy an extra treat from our guests. There is also an outdoor shower (cold only) for those who like to enjoy nature at its best.
Just outside your living room windows, across the pond there is a weeping wall, constantly running water down its rough lava face. These unique natural water features are often called 'Pele's Tears'. It is said of 'weeping walls' that 'Pele' the Hawaiian Fire Goddess who created the 'aina' (the land) is weeping for her children (the islands). We often see a beautiful and rare Hawaiian Hawk the 'Io (Pronounced...'Eo). She likes to come in the mornings and hunt crayfish out of the stream. Watch her from your morning breakfast table as she perches on one of the large stream boulders and enjoys her catch. There are only an estimated 1400-2100 of these beautiful birds of prey left in the Hawaiian Islands, most of those are on the Big Island.
This lovely private property invites you to become 'one with the aina' (the land). The entire 2+ acres is it's own little secluded valley and offers you absolute privacy. It cannot be seen by any other house and has only one gated access. This vacation rental gives you the ultimate 'get away from it all experience without driving out to the middle of nowhere. We are close to the main road and easy to find. Although this is a tropical rainforest property we are NOT 'off the grid' like most similar properties are. This house has Hawaii County Water and Electricity, we are NOT dependent on solar panels, generators or catchment water as many secluded stream properties are. We have satellite TV by Dish Network (Satellite may experience periods of disruption, due to location and weather) with a 32' Flat Panel HDTV in the Living Room as well as a 21' TV w/VCR/DVD in the Master Bedroom (Sorry no satellite in the bedroom). We also offer free Wi-Fi internet access via Verizon Modem and Cradlepoint Wi-Fi router. Internet service is usually reliable but does depend on a cellular connection and may be slow or interrupted at times.
A short 3 miles back down Hwy. 19 to Kolekole Beach Park will give you the opportunity to swim in a huge waterfall that drops into a stream. This waterfall is located in a City & County Park and admission is free. It is rarely found by tourists and is easily accessed by car with a nice paved road (no hiking required) it even has a rope swing. (Always be cautious of flash floods when swimming in steams & waterfall areas)
The Hilo rain forest side of the Big Island is truly unique and offers unparalleled sightseeing. This property is close to numerous waterfalls; Umauma Falls & two different zip line adventures, all are a short 2 min. drive away, Kolekole Park (5 min.), Akaka and Kahuna Falls (15 min.), Rainbow Falls and Boiling Pots (20 min) and beautiful Onomea Bay and Onomea Botanical Gardens (10 min.) and only 20 minutes from the quaint historical Hilo Town. Pick up local fresh fruits and vegetables at the wonderful Hilo farmers market Wed. & Sat. are their big days but there are always a few vendors during the other days. Take a drive up to Volcano's National Park and experience Madam Pele (Hawaiian Goddess of Fire) up close and personal. Hike out to where the 'Aina' (land) is being born as Kiluea flows hot molten lava into the ocean.
Be sure to take a drive out to Kapoho and snorkel in a pristine Marine Preserve with fabulous coral and tropical fish. Don't forget the geothermal hot pools are just down the road after snorkeling.
Come...Share our piece of paradise and live the Hawaii dream!

We want to thank you again for allowing us to stay in your beautiful home while we visited the Big Island. No matter how amazing the sights of our day were, we always found our surroundings when we got home breathtaking! Pictures simply cannot do its beauty justice. We could not have imagined a more perfect place. The notes and instructions left around the house were also very helpful and thoughtful, and really showed the pride and care you have in your property. We will be recommending you to all of our friends!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

Thank you Linda & Ken for a wonderful week in a Garden of Eden. You thought of everything, and we loved being able to feed the Koi Pond, and make friends with the cats. This is a truly amazing property, and the love you have shown to it is so evident. Thanks for sharing it with others.Recommended for: Pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, girls getaway.
Owner response: Aloha and thank you for your great comment. We love it when guests try to make friends with our feral cats and enjoy the friendly fish that follow you around the pond area. We have trapped the wild feral cats on the property and had them spayed/neutered so they don't reproduce. We are happy to supplement them with feeders, they are an important part of the ecosystem in keeping unwanted pests away. Aloha Oe', Linda and Ken

Even though we arrived at night (and in a torrential rain), we were immediately blown away by the magic of Heavens Door. From the enticing road leading to the house, the beautiful surrounding rain forest, and the large teaming koi pond to the house itself we were amazed at the beauty of this property. If anything the reality surpassed the listing description. And I should mention we were there a full week in the rainiest month (November). We were able to buy just-caught ahi tuna at the fish market and fresh vegetables at the farmers' market in Hilo and cook our dinners in the well-equipped kitchen, enjoying the rain forest view as we ate. The beds were comfortable, bathrooms squeaky clean, and the sauna was much appreciated after a rainy day in Volcano NP (especially by our Swedish friend). Short ride to Akaka Falls, Botanical garden, four-mile scenic drive, and Hilo. Easy trip to the Kona side for excellent beaches, snorkeling and sun. The owner was very pleasant to deal with and we found the many notes in various parts of the house informative and entertaining. We also enjoyed feeding the fish and feral cats. Obviously, we will be recommending this property to family and friends.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers.

"Heavens Door" is a true oasis. It is totally private and so lush and tropical. We went to the Tropical Botanical Gardens (which is wonderful) but felt like we were living in our own tropical garden. The house had everything we needed and was very comfortable. When it did rain we were very cozy inside. This is a must see property.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Was a bit nervous about our first vacation rental, many owners overstate their properties. There is no way the listing could overstate this home - every aspect surpassed our hopes & expectations. My biggest regret is not planning more daylight hours at this rental - it's a worthy destination unto itself - I can't wait to return & will send my daughters to it on their upcoming honeymoon's. Here's what we found: Owner: Linda was very professional. She responded to phone & email contacts promptly & completely before, & after, I was confirmed. She walked me through the process step by step & sent a helpful packet of information with directions, home & surrounding location details. She is very detail oriented, providing inside the home small unobtrusive notes that answer just about everything a guest would need to know as they use the property (how to turn on the sauna, what silverware/towels to use for outings, how to operate the electronics, etc). She has thought through deeply all the scenarios of her guests & provided answers or supplies for every situation & need. Never being disoriented, uninformed or lacking something essential made the difference between a frustrating & a relaxing vacation. It felt like our home. Home Condition: The home & surrounding grounds are very well maintained. I can't think of a single thing that felt dirty, or worn out. The pictures don't do it justice. Rooms are large, furniture is clean & in great condition, tubs are clean & supplied with TP, shampoo, conditioner & body wash. Huge glass wall windows in most rooms bring the sight and sounds of the forest right indoors. Home Amenities: You will want for nothing. Kitchen is well stocked. Every detail has been thought of (CD's with Hawai'ian music, maps, coolers for outings, flashlights hanging by each bed, spices in the cupboards, food to feed the Koi, hose to wash the car, etc). I think the only things we bought last week for use at the house was food & laundry detergent. Location: Only downside to being on the Hilo side is the hour drive to the Kona side for great beaches, but the drive is beautiful & there is tons to do & see on the Hilo side, & . The property is insanely perfect. 100% private, at the end of a gates long winding drive through pristine rain forest surrounded by towering cliffs, no nearby homes, waterfalls, koi ponds a swimming hole in the stream, flowers & fruit everywhere. It is pure eden. Problems Encountered: Amazingly none! It won't disappointRecommended for: Romantic getaway, adventure seekers, girls getaway.
Owner response: Wow...What a fabulous review, thank you for all your kind words about us (the owners) as well as our property. We are always very happy to hear that our guests enjoy "Heaven's Door" as much as we do. Mahalo, Linda and Ken

This place is simply TERRIFIC. My partner and I stayed at Heaven's Door for a romantic getaway and used it as a hub to explore the Hilo side of the Big Island, we stayed here for about a week. The location is overwhelming - the house is in a huge tropical garden. It feels nicely secluded from any civilization noise or other people around. Yet, it is only two minutes from the Hawaii Belt Road and about twenty minutes to Hilo. The house itself is amazing. It's clean, spacious, cozy, and ridiculously well equipped. There's even camping tableware provided for outside, ziplock bags, torchlights, and whatever else one might need for day trips. We very much enjoyed every minute here even when it was raining outside (an important thing to consider for the Hilo coast). The garden around the house is extremely beautiful and the landscaping is an artwork by itself. There is a small stream running through the garden, and two fish ponds. At night, the place awakes to life when the birds and insects sing their songs (great to fall asleep to, honestly). If you are searching for a really unforgettable stay - this is it for you, you won't regret it. We already recommended it warmly to our friends and family, and will definitely come back ourselves. One important thing, however: bring insect repellent if you are staying in the garden. Inside, we managed to keep them out. But there are quite a few of them outside, due to the garden vegetation and the ponds. Plus, they are hungry because there are hardly people around. We did not use insect repellent on the first day, and that was a mistake. An itch relief is also a very good idea. We were fine afterwards.Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, age 55+, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

Like others who have written reviews about this property, I was afraid that the descriptions were too good to be true. I have never been so pleasantly surprised in my life. Also like others, our only regret is that we didn't stay longer and devote a few days to simply enjoying the property. That will be solved next year! We explored almost all parts of the island. This was definitely our favorite. It was a convenient drive to so many attractions, such as the great zip line and the volcano. This is the first vacation spot that my husband expressed sadness at leaving. A very special place owned by very thoughtful and meticulous people. We have already recommended you to several friends. Thank you for offering your beautiful property to strangers. Your thoughtfulness made us feel welcome.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2008
About the owner: We retired from our lives on California's Central Coast in 1991 to move to Hawaii. Since then we have lived on Oahu's North Shore. We are fortunate to have our children and grandchildren also living here in the islands. We are active with multiple animal and children charities and are grateful to be living in such a special place.
Why the Owner Chose Hilo:
Since we live full time on Oahu's North Shore we chose Heaven's Door as a second home for ourselves. Living on the beach is wonderful but we thought a tropical hideaway just a short 40 min. flight from Oahu would be the ideal getaway. One of the best things about Heaven's Door is that it is not dependent on solar or generators and it was indeed difficult to find a country property with a stream and water features that was actually 'on the grid' with County water and electricity. The search went on for 3 years to find this unique and pristine property but it was was well worth it.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Don't get me wrong, we love our home at the beach on Oahu, but going over to the quiet town of Hilo and the serenity of Heaven's Door is truly a Hawaiian experience even for those of us who live in Hawaii year round. I can't begin to describe the peace that comes over us when we get to Heaven's Door. There are no other sounds except the wind rustling the palm trees and the birds. At night my husband likes to listen to the frogs and crickets something we don't have at the beach. This tropical paradise is our favorite local getaway even though we spend a lot of our time there fixing, fine tuning and caring for the property. We are fortunate to have a wonderful caretaker who does the gardening and cleanings for us and only lives two miles away. I encourage you to experience Heaven's Door for yourself, you won't be disappointed. Check out the guest comments from other people just like yourself. Aloha Oe', Linda and Ken Martin
