Little Touches and Great Hospitality go a long way!

Guest: Adrian (Concord ( Bay Area), California)
Date of Stay: 03/15/12 Review Submitted: 04/16/12

I've stayed in many rental homes on vacations in the past and this has been my favorite! My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights and had the most relaxing time in Volcano. The place was nice and cozy and was beautifully decorated. The wrap around lanai had plenty of seating to relax, which helped us feel removed from the hussle and bussle of travel, and after a long day it was nice to relax by the fire with complimentary fire wood. It also helps to have the fridge stocked with eggs, yogurt, banana bread, and kona coffee to get a day started right! If I get lucky enough to return to the magical place that is Volcano, I will be staying here again!!!! Thanks Peggy!

Owner response:Thank You for sharing your magical experience! Your words describe the same feelings that I get when I too escape to my Volcano Home to leave the everyday demands behind. Look forward to seeing you again! Sincerely, Peggy

Our Wonderful March stay

Guest: CD (Florida)
Date of Stay: 03/06/12 Review Submitted: 04/13/12

We stayed at Pele’s Garden from 3 days in March 2012 and wished we could have stayed longer. We had researched this place only on the VRBO website and read the previous comments. They were all correct. The house worked perfectly for two couples. From the beginning, Peggy was very accommodating on answering our questions via phone and email before and during our stay. We were able to find the place easily from her directions. It was a perfect respite in Volcano. The atmosphere was very calming. We really enjoyed the house and the grounds especially for the price. It was the most “bang for our buck” we found on any of 4 islands. We enjoyed being able to have a nice home cooked breakfast in a nice setting. The Wi-Fi, TV, fireplace, washer, dryer, all kitchen appliances worked well. The beds were so comfortable we’re trying to find the equivalent for our own home. There is a book in the house that gives a lot of helpful information. Being able to bath in rainwater, have solar water heating, be able to recycle and have a compost bin was only icing on this 5 tiered beautiful cake. Two items of note: Make sure you understand the radiant wall heaters and how to turn on and off the electric H2O Heater for showers.

Owner response:Thank You for your positive review of our secret little paradise. Your words say it all and are much appreciated. Thanks for the tip on the heating system. Hope to see you again! Sincerely, Peggy

Peaceful rainforest cottage for a perfect anniversary getaway...Already planning our next stay!

Guest: HawaiiSUPDawg (Waikoloa, Hawaii)
Date of Stay: 02/17/12 Review Submitted: 02/22/12

My husband and I stayed here for our 1-year anniversary with our young Labrador Retriever who loved the cold weather and sleeping on the beautiful bamboo floor. Although it rained most of the time, it provided the perfect opportunity to do nothing and just enjoy the wrap-around lanai with the hammock, the patio chairs, playing guitar, or sitting inside by the fire...sipping the wide variety of teas, Kona coffees, and indulging in the warm socks and tropical fruits that Peggy (the owner) provided. The house was spotless both inside and out, and our dog and I spent much time snooping around the yard to check out the interesting foliage, much of it being native Hawaii plants. Peggy was fantastic about answering all my questions right away and was a thoughtful, genuine person in all of our communications. Our out of town friends from Orcas Island, WA stayed a night with us, and we all agreed to plan another stay there next year. Plenty of room for all of us, too. There's no real grocery store in town, so either buy your fruits and veggies at the Sunday farmer's market in Volcano Village or stop in Hilo or Kea'au (18 miles away). We picked up delicious pizzas and salads at Keawe Kitchen and wine next door in the Village...and ate there at the house. Thai Thai is wonderful, too, as well as the other few restaurants.

Owner response:Mahalo for your thorough and favorable review! Taking your time to post a review of our property, Pele's Secret Garden and the Volcano area is very much welcomed and appreciated. Thank you too for taking good care and cleaning up after your young lab. One wouldn't even have know that we had a doggie staying with us, and that's why we can continue to welcome pets, because of responsible pet owners like yourselves. Please come back and stay with us again.

What a find! Wonderful

Guest: Punkingee (Northern California)
Date of Stay: 01/19/12 Review Submitted: 01/25/12

We loved this house from the huge sliding glass doors to the wonderful jetted bath to the secluded location. We've stayed in many rental houses in Volcano & this is by far the best. We loved the tropical fruit placed in a basket for us. Very clean. Quiet. The fireplace was wonderful on cool nights (all of the nights). Super highly recommended.

Owner response:Mahalo for your positive review of my property. The comments from my guests say it all, and make the effort that is put into providing "highly recommended" Vacation Rental in Volcano all worth the while. Hope to "see" you again on your return. Sincerely, Peggy

Absolutely Beautiful!

Guest: Bernadette (Las Vegas, NV.)
Date of Stay: 10/30/11 Review Submitted: 11/20/11

Four of us (two couples) stayed at Pele's Secret Garden for 3 days after spending a week in Kona. Wow. We were thrilled to see that the home looked just as beautiful inside and out as the pictures on the website portray. (Having rented several homes and apartments around the world in the past 5 years, we've seen all kinds of properties.) There is a beautiful deck with table and chairs and a hammock. We had coffee every morning outside, and the only sounds were the birds chirping. It was so relaxing and peaceful! The inside has all the amenities you'll need and it's very cozy and warm. The decor is beautiful and Peggy (the owner) has obviously put a great deal of time and thought into caring for this home. There's a full washer and dryer, hair dryer, extra pillows, etc. There's even umbrellas on the porch and warm socks by the door to keep your feet warm! Peggy really thought of everything to make her guests feel comfortable. We were there to celebrate my cousin's 25th wedding anniversary and Peggy had a very nice bottle of champagne waiting for us to help celebrate, along with a bowl of fresh fruit and baked goods. It's those little touches that were very impressive. It was also very simple to make arrangements with her. She answered all of my questions promptly and made the whole process very easy. The location of the cottage is great! We were minutes from the entrance to VNP. It was easy to get to the park. For restaurants, we highly recommend The Kiawe Kitchen. We had a fantastic lunch there. The pizza was fabulous and my husband said the lamb sandwich was one of the best he'd ever had. The Thai Thai restaurant was pretty good as well. I can honestly say we had no complaints about this property at all. It was beautiful, well-appointed, well-located, and I highly recommend it. My only caution would be that if you plan on bringing young children, be aware that the cottage isn't exactly child-proof. You'll be spending lots of time making sure the little ones don't break any of the beautiful vases, pottery, etc.

Owner response:Mahalo for your beautiful review. It's comments like this that make it all worth my while. Sincerely, Peggy

Perfect Honeymoon spot

Guest: Anonymous
Date of Stay: 08/11/11 Review Submitted: 08/23/11

We stayed for a week in Pele's Secret Garden as part of our honeymoon in North America. As my husband said on the first evening "everything is beautiful" and its true. Peggy has filled the house with a thousand beautiful things but also with much care and love. It was a privilege to spend time in this beautiful tranquil rainforest retreat. On top of that the house has every modern convenience and the fridge was full of breakfast delights and a bottle of champagne to celebrate our wedding. We will never forget our time in this special place. Mahalo Peggy.

Owner response:Thank you for making your Honeymoon plans here at Pele's Secret Garden. It's always a pleasure to hear such positive feedback. We wish you a beautiful life together. Sincerely, Peggy

Guest: Volcano Visitor (Atlanta, GA)
Date of Stay: 07/15/11 Review Submitted: 07/25/11

We had a wonderful time staying at Pele's Secret Garden! This home is just lovely and is oh-so comfortable! It didn't feel at all like a "rental," rather it felt like we were a guest in someone's well-appointed home. The beds were heavenly...my insomniatic husband slept like a baby, and the fireplace was so cozy for the chilly nights (which we were unprepared for!). I was amazed by how eco-friendly the house was with the solar water heater and filtered rainwater. We very much appreciate Peggy's personal welcome note, the fresh fruit, and the yummy banana bread. Thank you!

Owner response:Your review is much appreciated! Lots of Aloha to you and your family. Sincerely, Peggy

Guest: Qileina (Big Island)
Date of Stay: 06/20/11 Review Submitted: 06/27/11

We have stayed at Pele's Secret Garden twice in the past six months, with different family members. Although we live on island, we like to spend a couple of nights when exploring the volcano, and Pele's S.G. is the real deal! So many VRBO's exaggerate their offerings, but this is exactly as described. Convenient, clean, charming, filled with beautiful things, comfortable beds and sofas. A hammock on the deck for sunny days and a fireplace for cool nights. Owner Peggy is gracious, generous, and communicative. Highly recommended.

Owner response:It's always good to hear from a local resident of the Big Island that your stay at Pele's Secret Garden met your expectations. Your comments mean a lot! Mahalo and and please come visit us again. Sincerely, Peggy

Our family stayed two nights at this tropical paradise. Peggy has put much love and thought into her beautiful home, and does everything to make your stay enjoyable. We have stayed at many hotels and rental homes in our travels, and Pele's Secret Garden is one of our favorites. We thoroughly enjoyed the solitude and privacy, the well stocked kitchen, and the beautiful gardens and wrap around porch. The location cannot be beat. You are so close to VNP, and the village of Volcano, yet able to find incredible peace, relaxation, and privacy at Pele's secret Garden. Mahalo Peggy!

A tranquil heaven located just outside Volcanoes National Park

Guest: Alix West (West Chester, Pa)

This house was one of the most beautiful welcoming, tranquil places we've ever stayed, and it's located minutes from Volcanoes Nat'l park and other fabulous places to visit. From the minute you drive down the driveway you know you've found a little slice of heaven. Peggy, the owner could not have been more helpfufl or responsive when we booked this, and her hospitality continued with a beautiful note, fresh fruit, and bottle of wine and breakfast goodies to welcome us upon our arrival. My husband and I stayed her along with another couple for 3 nights and wished we could have stayed for 3 weeks. The little town of Volcano is also minutes away and has several restaraunts. We tried them all and found the food to be delicious in each. We would highly recommend this property for anyone.

Cozy place to stay

Guest: Kona Visitor (New Jersey)
Date of Stay: 04/09/11 Review Submitted: 04/21/11

My family of 4 with 2 teenagers had a great stay here during our visit to Volcano. The house is very cozy and nice. My son gravitated to the hammock on the lanai. The wrap around sofa and fireplace are nice too. The whole house is very comforable. The birds visiting the bird feeder were beautiful. We stayed on a Sat. and Sun. night and there weren't many restaurants open on Sun. night in Volcano. Take that into account when planning. My family decided it was the most comfortable place we stayed on the island. It was also very nice to have breakfast food and fruit provided. The house is full of cozy and thoughtful gestures. Also, the neighborhood is mostly residential and was a good running place for my daughter. We visited the Volcano farmer's market and got good food and gifts to take home.

Owner response:We appreciate all your positive comments and tips and welcome your return if you decide to visit Volcano again. Best Wishes and Lots of Aloha from Hawai'i.

This home made our stay in Volcano very comfortable. We really appreciated the fresh fruit and well stocked kitchen. We had our 1 1/2 year old with us and despite the home not being baby proofed we were provided with a high chair complete with plate and spoon as well as a travel cot for the baby. The home was absolutely spotless, I cannot say enough good things about our stay. Thank you so much Peggy for all your attention to detail.

We stayed for 3 nights and enjoyed every minute. Would definately stay again, wished we could have stayed longer. Exceeded expections. Beautiful, well decorated, clean home with a stocked kitchen, feels like home. With 2 walls of solid windows in the open living/dining/kitchen area it feels like one is outside while being inside. Home is extremely quiet and peaceful in the middle of a subdivision, offset from the street, absolutely no road noise. Perfect location for exploring the volcano park. Owner is wonderful!

Wow - what a place to come and stay. It's just perfect. My husband and I loved every minute we had at Pele's Secret Garden. It had all the amenities we needed - including great Internet service (for some work). Quiet and secluded. Enjoyed laying on the hammock in the sun and laying in bed at night listening to the rain on the roof. Only minutes from the volcano and a few great restaurants just across the way in Volcano Village. We however - also enjoyed the convenience of a full kitchen - even a BBQ. Come and stay here - you will not be disappointed!

My husband, brother, and sister-in-law spent two nights at Pele's Secret Garden. We wanted to experience the Hilo side of the Big Island while taking in Volcano National Park. Peggy was so easy to talk with and quick to respond to emails. Finding the home was easy! Volcano is a pretty small town so luckily we bought some food and cooked at our vacation home for one night enjoying a couple bottles of wine. The beds were super comfy and the kitchen pristine. The entrance to the national park was super close. One thing I'd tell future people staying here is that Peggy goes above and beyond as far as providing the essentials. The fridge was stocked with breakfast making us feel like our Safeway stop before coming here was a waste. I would highly recommend Pele's Secret Garden to anyone travelling to Volcano.

Owner response:Lisa and Family, Thank you so much for your favorable comments, we appreciate it and welcome you back to stay at Pele's Secret Garden anytime. Mahalo, Peggy

My two friends and I arrived in the dark after a long day of touring the Big Island. The house is amazing and we were so thrilled to find everything we needed for instant relaxation, a hot bath, a glass of wine and a quick meal prepared in a chefs kitchen- everything was easy to find. We had an early night and woke up surrounded by the green ferns on every side of the house- really lovely. Breakfast included fresh fruit left for us by Peggy and bagels and cream cheese. Wonderful. Thanks so much Peggy for allowing us to experience your hospitality on the Big Island. Memories will go on for many years. Ruth, Donna and Laurie from Aotearoa New Zealand

If you think the pictures are nice, wait to see the actual property: It is better! The owner Peggy is also very nice and helpful, which definitly contributed to the fantastic experience we had at this place. When we arrived, we found a tray full of tropical fruits left for us on the kitchen counter. We bought some groceries on our way, realizing that we didn't really need them. My wife and I were travelling with our one year old baby and her crib was already set up when we arrived. We only stayed for 3 nights, which was very short, given the comfortable home and beautiful surroundings. It was very difficult to leave, believe me. We will definitely be back and this time for a longer stay!

We just returned from a week in Volcano at Pele's Secret Garden. The home is very well-suited to vacationers - and the flowers and fruit and breakfast foods were generous and thoughtful. Our time there included some nights with relatives from Honolulu, one of whom is has substantial physical challenges. He found no problem navigating the house. Hi Peggy: Thank you for sharing Pele's secret garden with us. We had our little piece of heaven in the midst of vacano and rainforest for the past three days, and truly appreciated all the thoughtful details you arranged which made our stay so warm and cozy. The property is absolutly gorgeous - prettiest in our VRBO experience so far. Our toddler enjoyed running around the porch and yard and checking out the rocks, plants and windchimes. Every night we ate dinner while watching soft evening light outside fading into deep and quiet darkness. We also enjoyed reading the book"the old turtle and the truth" by the fireplace. Thanks again. We will definitely recommend to our friends and family.

I have stayed at "Pele's Secret Garden" twice now. The location is excellent for exploring the Volcano and the surrounding area. The beautiful new house is located in a "Hawaiian tree fern" forest and it is so quiet and peaceful. I love to listen to the different native birds with their unique songs. The Hawaii Volcanoes Natl. Park is just minutes away and has extensive hiking trails for the beginner or the expert. If you love photograpy like I do you will be in heaven. At around 4000 feet elev. the weather during the day is commonly in the 70s and at night it is cool and crisp. I love the fact that I can light a fire in the fireplace after returning from exploring the island all day and the bed had a down comforter that kept us warm all night. I also enjoyed the fact that Volcano Village has a small grocery store and some excellent restaurants but you can drive just 30 minutes away and be in the tropical town of Hilo and have all the shopping and restaurants you could want. My favorite part of the island is actually Puna and it is so close. I love the jungles and rugged coastline of Puna and really enjoy spending time at Kahena Black Sand Beach. I could go on and on about my love for this island and staying at "Pele's Secret Garden". I am a travel photographer for the island of Hawaii and like to use this home as a base for my travels to the volcano and beyond and recommend that you do so also. Scott
