You will love this beautiful beach house. From the exquisite wooden hand-crafted butterfly gate to the inlaid mosaic tile on the porch and bathroom, you will appreciate the "extras" that make this more than just another rental house. In addition to the full bathroom, there is an outside mosaic "iguana" shower for post-beach use, a great attraction for children. The house is located on a secluded sandy beach and is a short 20 minute walk into the town of Puerto Viejo.
The beach house is set in a lovely garden of fruit trees and primordial flowers and herbs. Managers are right next door and can guide you to nearby attractions, including the best restaurants, music spots, as well as snorkeling and hiking in the area. They can connect you to indigenous guides on the Kekoldi and Talamanca Reserves, and in the Gandoca-Manzanillo wildlife reserve, and arrange once-in-a-lifetime experiences for guests at the beach house.
A wonderful feature of the house is the large porch and living area, with a beautiful smooth wooden railing high enough to be protective for small children playing, while allowing those lying in the hammocks to gaze at the surrounding foliage, feel the ocean breeze, and smell the perfumed scent of the Ylang-Ylang tree in the yard.
Guests can cook in the fully equipped beach house kitchen, often incorporating fruits from the garden into their meals. Or, dine in town in one of the many gourmet restaurants. Cuisine ranges from local rice-and-beans made with coconut, to Eurasian, Italian, Spanish, and Japanse.
Nightlife in Puerto Viejo is enticing, with different events each night, including Jam Night and Calypso Night at the Hotel Maritza and live jazz and reggae at the Loco Natural.... or stay in your beach house and be lulled to sleep by the sounds of the ocean and of falling avocados...

This was our first trip to Costa Rica and our first trip abroad in years and I must say The Butterfly House has not disappointed us....the front gate of the house has a giant butterfly on it. We just told the taxi driver "The Butterfly House" and 5 minutes and $5 later we were here. The house is completely fabulous...it's not a Hollywood mansion but a beautiful beach bungalow. I am listening to the waves on the beach and I can see them through the beautiful plantings in the front yard. If you love nature it is everywhere...there are Banana trees, Ginger plants, Papaya, Hibiscus and other flowering plants that defy description. Occasionally a vehicle or pedestrian passes by on the one lane gravel road in front but so slowly and with the plantings and trees, we hardly notice. Gentle rain in the early morning before light and sunny days so far make it ideal. I fished in the surf this morning...a herd of horses romped and galloped on the beach while the odd sun bather walked by on the Black Sand beach. The sand is much finer than on US beaches creating a soft spongy feel. The house has an abundance of hot water for showers, washing dishes or hands and faces. Plenty of lights if you want and windows that open wide with protective screens and decorative wrought iron security bars so we are sleeping with with all the windows open to make sure we are lulled to sleep by the surf but safe from skeeters and the abundance of tropical wildlife. The house even comes with a wonderful house kitty...Poolie is loving and self reliant although they supply cat food if you would like to feed her. She will sit in your lap if you like or patrol for insects in the yard and leave you alone. The caretaker is 50 feet away next door with his wife if you need anything. He too will help when asked...in English, and leaves you alone to enjoy your little corner of paradise. There is even a TV and DVD player along with a collection of DVDs if you are so inclined and a little safe to store belongings while you are out enjoying any of 20-30 wonderful restaurants 5 minutes away by bike....one is actually 3 doors down....very nice and we rented bicycles there for $30/wk there as well. So I am listening to birds, watching butterflies and relaxing in a way I had forgotten. Jason the owner is respectful, easy to work with and responsive and he made it all very easy. The descriptions here are honest and represent everything fairly. David and Lynn North Carilina December 2011

We traveled to Costa Rica in the middle of May and loved our stay at this property for one week. We were steps away from the very quiet and secluded black sand beach. It was as if we were on a private beach. The property itself is beautiful as well. There are two bedrooms, one with a full bed and the other with two twins. The kitchen is fully stocked and we enjoyed numerous meals on the beautiful patio. The open bathroom concept was beautiful as well. Our favorite part was the two hammocks on the porch. One morning I was lying in the hammock, taking in the sounds of the crashing waves and the jungle noises and I then noticed a giant three-toed sloth in the tree above the porch! He hangs out there all day long, everyday. We really loved watching him. Furthermore, this property is a two minute drive into downtown Puerto Viejo or a 15 minute walk down the beach. The local restaurants are AMAZING. Some of the best food we've ever had. Our favorites were Salsa Brava, CariBeans, De Paso, Shawandha Hotel and El Refugio Grill. There is also a farmers market on Saturday's mornings. This property is also only a short drive south to Manzanillo which also has beautiful, private beaches as well as the rainforest. There are wonderful trails to trek through the jungle! The sunsets in this area are also beautiful. Maxi's is another restaurant you must try. Overall, the town of Puerto Viejo is very nice. The locals are respectful and do not bother you, yet they still live off of tourism, therefore are very accommodating. The property owners of this property are easy to get a hold of and very helpful and professional. We were very impressed with how smoothly everything went. Also, the neighbor/property manager is also helpful if you need him. But if you don't need him he will not bother you. Also, the weather in mid May was PERFECT. Only rained for one morning then cleared up. We plan on coming back to this property again in the future!
