The Best Address in Town - Place Aux Herbes

To enjoy all the delights of Uzès to the maximum, what can be better than being right in the center and taking part in the daily rituals of life in this very special little town?
As well, here you have SPACE with large rooms and high ceilings giving a total of around 140sq.m. of living area, not the usual divisions into yet more bedrooms but room to move.
The two weekly markets set up their stalls right below your windows and around the central fountain. On other days too, there are fresh fish stalls in addition to the greengrocer, cafés & baker plus innumerable little watering holes and eating places.
This very spacious apartment is situated in a privileged position overlooking the medieval Place aux Herbes right in the heart of Uzès.
It occupies the two top levels of what was an 1800'C Merchant's house and features a vast living room overlooking the square with sandstone fireplace and high and beamed cathedral ceiling.
For bookworms, there is a large selection of books to browse through, mostly in English though some are in Swedish, French or the odd other language.
Afternoon sunshine pours into the delightful kitchen/dining cum family which also has comfortable seating.
A large, sunny bedroom with en-suite shower room and a separate wc are also located on this level, overlooking a pedestrian passage and roof tops.
From the livingroom, a handcrafted wrought iron staircase leads to the upstairs bedroom with en-suite bathroom and a small dressing room.
The west-facing terrace with dining furniture and sun umbrellas is also reached from here. Views over the old tiled roofs and the far away hills is a very relaxing sight indeed after the bustle of the square.
The very best address in town also ensures you have everything practically at your feet. Of all the pleasures & necessities Uzès has to offer, none is more than 2 minutes walk away!
The square itself has a number of small outdoor cafés and restaurants under the medeival sandstone vaulted arches or under the shade of the plane trees.
Enjoying the benefits of being high up, there are also stairs to get here! This apartment is not really
suitable for anyone with a walking disability & needing a lift.
Our previous guests have been mostly couples, one or two at the time, and happily, many returning for 2nd and 3rd visits.
Being in the very heart of life in a small town is something which is a joy in itself.
Stroll down to one of the 4/5 cafés outside the front door and watch the square come to life of a morning.
Get the croissant from the boulangerie opposite, a newspaper if you feel the need of 'outside'. Otherwise, simply be. And see.
It has to be experienced to be believed.

A charming, eccentric, interesting treasure of an apartment in a charming, beautiful and almost unknown little city in the Midi. The only negative to the apartment is several flights of steep stairs, but we (in our 70s) thought the daily climb worth it. (Not, though, for persons with real limitations, crutches...or for families with very young kids in strollers) A better location can hardly be imagined, overlooking the place aux Herbes, with its 6+ cafes and restos, the Wed. bio-market and the huge Sat. market. Many VRBO listings are little better than motel rooms. This is a home, with warmth, books, personality. The owner is very helpful and her housekeeper pleasant and thorough. We ended up buying in the region and will use the apt for overflow guests.Recommended for: Girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

This was a wonderful apartment! Location couldn't be better as it is on the main square, Place des Herbes. The kitchen is very well equipped, but make sure you have an extra can of propane for the gas cooktop, if you plan on cooking a few meals. Beautiful living areas with plenty of comfortable seating and lovely antiques fill the apartment! It was a great place to hang at the end of our days! The Saturday market will amaze you and Uzes to me is like Camelot!! The owner was most accommodating making sure were very comfortable. The upper loft area has a full bath with a hand shower and a nice large closet for whoever stays in that area. You access the terrace from this area as well. There is a parking place that was offYered for extra Euro and that worked out very well. Make sure you rent a small enough car, though... buy the time we left, we we becoming expert at backing into this small space. You will LOVE this spot!! Oh FYI, the stairs became easier after a couple of runs, and frankly if you don't have mobility issues, after all the food and wine, it's a good thing! Uzes rocks!!Did you find this review helpful? The apartment was charming and the location on the Place aux Herbes was wonderful, with the many temptations of Uzes' market spread out below us twice a week. Uzes itself has many good restaurants and interesting architecture, and is a good base for trips to the surrounding countryside. The flights of steps to the apartment could be a challenge for the mobility-impaired, but the four of us (all in our 60s and 70s) had no problem with them. We would gladly return to Uzes, and to this apartment.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1990
About the owner: After having lived a rather globe-trotting life, Uzès is where I finally settled and still remain some 20 years later! For all the good reasons of climate, atmosphere, history, the local products of southern France etc, the list is in fact endless. I have yet to find a town as special as Uzes though now, having more free time, I do like to travel, visiti other places and friends, far and near. This means that my home is available for rent and you can all come and see what it is like to live in a really special, authentic small French town like Uzes! Someone recently commented 'it's like 'falling in love again......'
Why the Owner Chose Uzes:
For all the reasons previously given and I have not regretted this decision for one single moment.
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
Here you are,in the very heart of the little town (traffic free) and enjoy looking down on the two very colourful weekly markets from your windows, check if your friends have yet arrived in the café on the square below, smell if the cheese stall has opened and later on, observe the night settling over the square when all grows quiet.....and sometimes see the full moon rising over the Ducal towers to the east....
From the terrace, you can sit in solitary splendor contemplating the old tiled roofs or far-away hills with just the birds doing their evening rounds for company....
Seems blissful?
It is!
