Historic City Centre Apartment in Edinburghs Georgian New Town
Year Purchased: 2008
Why the Owner Chose Edinburgh
New Town Apartment was chosen for its wonderful Georgian charm and peaceful, yet central location. The apartment is one of tranquility, with twin south facing windows to the front, flooding the whole apartment with light. Cumberland Street - an impressive, upmarket area of the city - is literally 5 minutes walk to Princes Street, making this a perfect base for guests to visit all major attractions on foot. Access the the extensive and private gardens on Queen Street/ Heriot Row ( 2 minutes walk ) are fabulous. They are beautifully kept, and huge area filled with many trees and shrubs. There is a childrens sand pitt - and a pond with little island - this is supposedly the insiration for Robert Louis Stevensons writing of Treasue Island - he used to live at no. 17 Heriot Row, facing these gardens, and played here as a boy. Absolutely beautiful and a must for all guests.
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment
- Free wifi internet access.
- City Centre location
- Access to extensive private gardens
- Personal meet and greet
The Scottish National Portrait Gallery is an art gallery on Queen Street, Edinburgh, Scotland. It holds the national collections of portraits, all of which are of, but not necessarily by, Scots. In addition it also holds the Scottish National Photography Collection. It is a red sandstone Gothic revival building, designed by Robert Rowand Anderson and built between 1885 and 1890, and modelled on the Doges Palace in Venice

Located on Multrees Walk - Harvey Nichols ("Harvey Nicks"), founded in 1813, is an upmarket department store chain. Its original store is in London. Founded in 1813 as a linen shop, it offers many of the world's most prestigious brands in womenswear, menswear, accessories, beauty and food. Harvey Nichols attracts more younger shoppers than its rival Harrods but tends to be more expensive.[citation needed][original research?]
The Scott Monument is a Victorian Gothic monument to Scottish author Sir Walter Scott (not to be confused with the National Monument). It stands in Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh, opposite the Jenners department store on Princes Street and near to Edinburgh Waverley Railway Station. The tower is 200 feet 6 inches (61.11 m) high, and has a series of viewing decks reached by a series of narrow spiral staircases giving panoramic views of central Edinburgh and its surroundings. The highest viewing deck is reached by a total of 287 steps (those who climb the steps can obtain a certificate commemorating the event). It is built from Binny sandstone quarried in nearby Ecclesmachan; the bitumen contained in the stone considered%2
Princes Street is the main street in Edinburgh and it separates the Old and New Towns. The New Town is Georgian and dates from 18th Century.
Charlotte Square is a city square in Edinburgh, Scotland, part of the New Town, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Charlotte Square was the last part of the initial phase of the New Town to be completed in 1820. Much of it was the 1791 design of Robert Adam, who died in 1792, just as building began. The north-west corner (Glenfinlas Street) was only completed in the 1990s, but was done to the original design concept.
Situated to the north of Princes Street, George Street is a major street in the centre of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. Laid out from 1767 as part of James Craig's plan for the New Town, George Street was named in honour of King George III. George Street is home to many upmarket pubs, clubs and bars. Some of the attractions include: Le Monde (Bar/Club/Hotel) The Dome Candy Bar Bar 38 Opal Lounge (Hosted the MTV Europe Music Awards after-party). Tigerlily Tempus Bar & Restaurant
Stockbridge has something of a village atmosphere about it. Stockbridge is to the North edge of the New Town. It is alongside the Water of Leith, one of the main rivers running through Edinburgh. Gentrification in recent years has not killed the Stockbridge area's bohemian vibe, although the pokey wee music, junk, and crafts shops have been replaced by more upmarket antiques shops. Along the main Comely Bank road, there's also still an above average number of charity shops for bargain hunters. The area is characterised by the many delis, tea houses, cafes and pubs. For evenings out, the narrow St Stephen's Street is a good place to start with long-established and popular basement pubs such as The Baillie and Th
The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh, holds the national collection of modern art. The collection includes work by Picasso, Braque, Mondrian, Ben Nicholson, Matisse, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, The Scottish Colourists, Peter Howson, Levannah Harris, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Boyle Family and Douglas Gordon. Due to space constraints, the work that is displayed is often rotated. The gallery also holds temporary exhibitions. Surrealist and Dada art, as well as work by Eduardo Paolozzi are kept at the adjacent Dean Gallery.

My name is Jan Mainnie. I am 42 years of age, and married with 4 children and a beautiful cocker spaniel. I have only 2 self catering apartment - the first I bought in 2007 ( Castle View ) which ahs been very successful, and the New Town Apartment which I have owned since the summer of 2008.
When my youngest son went to school, I decided to set up a holiday apartment and have enjoyed every minute of it. I love the different people I get to meet, and find the work really rewarding - the comments in the visitors book have always ( thankfully) been extremely positive, and I like to personally meet guests upon arrival.
The feedback I have had is that most guests like the personal greeting. It gives me a chance to finally put a face to the name, and allows guests the chance to ask any questions they need to.
My husband has his own building company - which is extremely helpful if any unexpected problems arise ( so far infrequently, but nevertheless, inevitable). It allows me to be able to deal with the problems immediately, and personally.
I intend to keep the business with just 2 properties, so that I can personally manage them myself.

Scotland is the perfect place to rest, relax, and feel like a local. Everyone is super friendly and hospitable. Therefore, there is no better way to enjoy the community than to become a part of the community by staying in this cozy, homey apartment. Although the main streets are so close, the location of the apartment is in a neighborhood setting, surrounded by different gardens.

This property was excellent for our group of 4. The location was excellent for walking anywhere in the city, and the neighborhood was excellent. The apartment was spacious, very attractive, had great views, and all of the things our family needed for a wonderful holiday break! The kitchen was lovely, the bedrooms were very comfortable and the living room was comfortable and attractive. Again - location, location, location! it was wonderful to have such easy access to stores and attractions. I highly recommend it.

My family and I were very pleased that we had chosen this apartment for our short break in Scotland this year. I couldn't ask for more; clean and cozy rooms with well taken care bathroom and kitchen filled with sufficient items for us to start our holiday. Thank you Jan for being a wonderful host thought we only managed to speak on the phone-:)

This apartment was very true to the description. We were able to walk to all major sites in Edinburgh and the apartment comfortable fits at least 5 people. The apartment isn't fancy, but it's practical and was perfect for the 5 of us. Leo's Beanery Coffee shop is delicious and just 2 blocks up. We went there the first day...and everyday after :). Amore Dogs is great for dinner, too.

We enjoyed 4 wonderful days in Edinburgh and part of what made it a great vacation was coming 'home' to this lovely flat each night. It was surprisingly spacious, with all modern conveniences and very clean and comfortable. We were within walking distance of many of the sites we wanted to see (Edinburgh Castle, St. Giles, Royal Mile, Princes Street) and a bus ride to the HMY Britannia. The tourist info center and all the bus tours were also within walking distance. There were so many pubs and restaurants to choose from we were sorry we didn't have more time. The corner deli/grocer was only a couple of blocks away and had everything we could possibly need. We always felt safe even when returning home late at night. Thanks Jan for all your suggestions. We'll be sure to recommend your lovely flat to all our friends.
Owner response:Dear Rob & jane I am so glad that you enjoyed your stay here in Edinburgh. And thank you for taking the time to write a review. It is lovely for me to hear your comments, but also very helpful for future guests making their choice regarding holiday accommodation. Once again, thank you so much, and I hope you can visit again soon. Best wishes Jan

Never having been Europe, we were not aware that bath facilities such as no washcloths or hand towels were standard. We had trouble figuring out the microwave. Wished there had been some notes regarding that. We made the mistake of seeing the Bosch clothes washer on the pics, and assumed that there would be a dryer too. There was an interesting rack to dry our clothes, but it took 2 days! We felt somewhat isolated at the apartment with no phone...in case of emergency. Our cell phone was not operable, again not realizing that our cell phone would not work we should have been advised to purchase a temporary cell phone. There were times we wanted to reserve a cab, and had no way of doing that except at a phone booth. The apartment was roomy, quitet and darling, but the carpet had many stains and wasn't cleaned well under the beds and along the edges. The location was good but....a bit farther from Princess Street when we were handling luggage than we had imagined per the descripton. We loved the St Vincent Pub just a few steps away from the apartment and having appetizers and drinks there on our last evening in Edinburgh was a very wonderful memory. We ate at Bella Italia too, and absolutely loved that! We attended the Military Tattoo, and there are no words to describe how awesome that was. The Fringe Festival was going on, which increased the population of the city substantially, but there was so much to see and do. We loved our trip to Fife and St Andrews the most, and enjoyed our trip to Oban via train also!. We saw the most beautiful sunset we have ever seen on our way back.
Owner response:Thank you for taking the time to submit a review. I have taken your comments on board and have already placed detailed instructions regarding the appliances. As quoted on the website, there is only a washing machine in the apartment. The rack you quoted, is an original victorian drying rack, and I personally like to keep the period feel to the apartment. It has retained its original windows, shutters etc. But I have put in clothes airers which can be used to dry clothes also, so again, thank you for your comments. The carpets are professionally cleaned twice yearly, but of course do get lots of use, so some marks are always going to be visible, particularly as there are cream carpets throughout the apartment. Overall though, it seems you enjoyed your stay and hopefully you will visit our lovely city again soon.

We spent four nights in this lovely apartment recently. It was convenient and the windows provided very good light while the shutters kept out the morning until we were ready to get up. The living space was large enough for four adults to relax comfortably while deciding which of all the wonderful things to do the next day in this charming city. The old town is within walking distance up the hill and the grocery store is around the corner for eating in. Jan was very easy to work with. Our highlight was the three hour free walking tour. It was well worth our time and the tip we gave the guide at the end.
Owner response:Dear Linda Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review. It makes all the difference to know that you have enjoyed the flat and your stay here. Thank you so much. Hope you can visit us again soon. Best wishes Jan

We (2 adults + 3 kids) have stayed at the new town apartement for 4 nights on Aug. Lovely apartment with all the needed amensties. Large windows keep it illuminated even in grey days like we had. Excellent location meant we could walk almost everywhere without the need of a bus. Highly recommended !
