Papohaku Beach house description
NOTE: We now have easy/quick MiFi Internet reception through Verizon. We also added a new 50' Panasonic Plasma HD TV with exceptional clarity. The guest room now has the TV that used to be in the living room. Direct TV is our satalite service.
If the glitz and the shopping of Waikiki is what you are looking for, Molokai is not for you. If you are looking for relaxation, privacy, solitude or a romantic getaway, then you'll love Molokai and our home. We think of it as Montana in the middle of the Pacific, without the winter. Our home is in the West End of Molokai. This is the dry side, which means most days are sunny. During the winter Molokai gets some great surf without the crowds and during the summer you'll find some of the best snorkeling in the world. Our home is on 5 acres of privacy though the surrounding 5000-10,000 acres seems like it is part of one continuous property since most other homes are out of view. The Molokai people are famous for their hospitality. Molokai is the old Hawaii and the people want to keep it that way. Respect the island and the people will respect you.
Our home was finished in 2007. Everything is essentially still new, clean and luxuriously finished yet very comfortable and relaxing. From granite counter tops, stainless steel appliances and exotic hardwood floors to the beautifully tiled master shower the home is first class. The home is 1500 sq ft on one floor with an additional 650 sq ft lanai that has about 400 sq ft covered. You'll spend most of your time on our lanai deck in our new all weather furniture. The panoramic view is spectacular and the solitude is unique. The kitchen is complete with cherry wood cabinets and everything you'll need to prepare and eat your meals. We normally eat in and enjoy the sunset from our deck. With a brand new BBQ you'll enjoy cooking many of your meals outside. If you like star-gazing, and the night is clear, The Milky Way looks like a cloud. With our telescope & binoculars you will see the night sky and be awed as never before.
From the living room, kitchen, master bedroom & lanai your panaramic view is of Oahu, Kiaka Rock, Papohaku Beach and the surf breaking (if there is any). During clear days & at night you can see Honolulu, Waikiki, & Diamond Head. You can even see fireworks on Friday night & 4th of July.
Maunaloa Town is located 5 miles away and the grocery store is open each day, as is the Kite Factory & Gift Shop.
There are a number of excellent restaurants within 15-20 minutes that provide a variety of specialties. Grocery stores, with everything you'll need are in famous Kaunakakai Town which is about 20 minutes drive. There is a gift shop with chips, drinks, etc about 1 mile from our house at Kaluakoi Resort.
On Saturday mornings Kaunakakai hosts a fun farmers/crafts market and on Sunday evenings there is a Hula & Hawaiian music show at Paddler's Inn. Molokai has plenty of things to do or choose to do nothing at all. If you love the outdoors there is hiking, kayaking, scuba diving & snorkeling, bike riding, etc. It's also got some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. There is a good chance you'll find yourselves the only people on the beach....so if privacy, beauty, relaxation are things you are looking for we know you'll love our house and the Island.

Relaxing week in Molokai!
Relaxing week in Molokai!
This was our first visit to Molokai and we had a wonderful time staying at Bill and Julie's home! We loved the open floor plan, especially in the master bedroom with the bathroom located directly behind the wall with the bed which was open but still private. The main living area and kitchen were also designed with an open layout in mind, which opened up to the lanai through the double glass sliding doors looking out to the ocean. It made the entire room feel like you were outside! The view of the ocean from the lanai was perfect and we had most breakfasts and dinners out there! The deer were fun to watch out front! There were probably a hundred of them! And, the beaches were truly peaceful with only a few others around at any time! The house is located in a more remote location on the west end of the island which is a bit further from the more touristy part of the island (south central/east) but Molokai isn't very big so driving into town wasn't a big deal (around 30-40 minutes) to get groceries or stop at the Kanemitsu Bakery for their awesome coconut braids which were delicious! It was a truly relaxing vacation and we hope to visit again! Thank you!

Owner response: Thank you Ermina for your kind words. We're glad you enjoyed our home and Molokai. We love spending time at our home but when we're not there we're happy others can enjoy it. We positioned the home the way we did to take advantage of the beautiful view, create privacy and block the tradewinds that also keep the home cool compared to some of the more humid Hawaiian islands. Everything as described!
Everything as described!
This house was very spacious with high ceilings and beautiful wood floors. The master bedroom had a wonderful design, facing the deck on one side and connecting to the bathroom with a clever open layout on the other. The tile work in the bathrooms was beautiful. The house was stocked with everything we could have needed, from kitchen supplies to beach towels and mats. Bill made absolutely sure we had all of the assistance we needed. His neighbors were also available to assist us and were very helpful and friendly. We had a great time.

AWESOME..Most relaxing week of our lives!
AWESOME..Most relaxing week of our lives!
My wife and I stayed here during our Spring Break from Oahu last year (2011) and it was the most relaxing weekend that we have ever had in our entire life. The house was incredible, the views had us sitting on the porch or standing in front of the windows for most of the day. We loved to spend the day at the beach, come home and cook a big meal and eat it out on the huge Lanai while the sun set! The beach right down the beach is one of the best in the world. We are beach EXPERTS, and have been on them all over the world. Most days we were alone on the HUGE beach, nobody in sight for a mile each way for hours and hours! We live in Germany now, and think about our stay there often!! Highly recommended!

We just got home tonight from our second three week stay at Bill and Julie's Molokai piece of heaven. We stayed here last year in January and couldn't wait until this January finally arrived. This house is perfect for a family or just a couple. Everything you need is here including sunsets to die for, superb whale watching from the lanai, outdoor shower, quiet days with the only sounds being the birds, axis deer barking and the sound of crashing waves at the nearby beaches. Bill and Julie have done a wonderful job creating such a beautiful home and letting us stay there. They are gracious hosts who want you to have a wonderful time on this beautiful island. The beaches around the west side are awesome, great to hike and walk on, or just sit on the beach and relax. My husband and I go there to unwind after working hard all year with our business full of fun, but high stress and always working hard to please our customers. We love this island, this house and everybody we met here. This is truly a little piece of old Hawaii, and it really is the friendly island.

Year Purchased: 2007
About the owner: I coached swimming & water polo at Corona del Mar H.S. in Newport Beach, CA. This was taken at the League Championships in 2009. My wife Julie is much better looking, but I didn't have a photo of her handy.
Why the Owner Chose Papohaku Beach:
Actually this isn't our vacation home as much as our retirement home. We have been coming to Hawaii since the early 80's and we've visited all the islands. After looking at homes and land on Oahu, Maui and the Big Island we decided to try Molokai because we were looking for what Hawaii used to be rather than what it has become. We first visited Molokai in 1981 and we loved it then. We went back over the next few years but hadn't been there since 1987. In 2002 we went back and if it had changed we didn't see it. We fell in love with it again: the people, the beauty, the privacy and the simple life that exists there. Most people wear t-shirts, shorts & sandles. There is still no signal on the island. There is plenty to do if you like the outdoors: beach, hiking, riding a bike, snorkeling, scuba, fishing, relaxing, etc.
