Why the Owner Chose Santa Rosa
From the start we were interested in some type of vacation rental or B&B as part of the business. About half of the properties we considered had potential for a vacation rental. Our bigger decision was were to start with the wine business. It is a complex business and very capital intensive. We choice to start with grapes since great wine must start with great fruit.
Sonoma is one of the top wine regions in the world. In recent years this area has learned to focus on its strengths and not be a Napa hopeful. Our cool weather Chardonnay and Pinot Noir rival the top wines in the world. This property with its volcanic soil, cooling petaluma gap breeze and hillsides make it an idea spot for great fruit.
The bonus of this location is that while we have a peaceful, rural vineyard, we are very centrally located with easy access to Santa Rosa, Rohnert Park and ALL the wine areas. The kids are not burdened with a reclusive rural location.
It really is the best of all worlds.
The Unique Benefits at this House
As our guest you are welcome, and encouraged, to explore the vineyards. Walk, run, picnic or bike, it is a new vista on each of the three peaks on the property. We have had many bikers stay here as their home base and even some repeats for this. Golf is only few miles away.
Most guest are looking forward to sampling the wine reagion and the wines of Sonoma a second to none. Our central location is excellent for multiple day trips in different directions, all easy to get to.
San Francisco is less than an hour away and a direct route over the Golden Gate Bridge.
Some guest find they like the Cottage so much that they just stay put and enjoy and relax. We have outfitted the rental with movies and games. The kitchen is stocked with gourmet equipment and spices to allow you to cook with style. Since we are on the property we can always provide advice or other items of interest.
Owner's Map of Santa Rosa
We purchased this property two years ago after searching for more than two years. My husband, Mitch, had been an executive specializing in startups and turnarounds for many years and we all felt it was time to perhaps create something for the family. The kids(3) and I also required that it be something that he loved for a change. He has been a wine fanatic for his entire life. We had a family meeting and agreed that we were all in for the adventure in Wine. For my part, leaving the design painting business was an easier choice since the market was slowing rapidly.
It all started with Mitch finding a winery that needed a turnaround. This was a perfect way to learn the details of the business. For over a year he commuted to California and ran a winery as General Manager and Assistant Winemaker. During this time we searched all over the US for our own business. In the end we decided on the property in Sonoma for its potential for super premium grapes, growth and its beauty.
The first year was more work than anyone expected since all aspects of the business and property needed massive amounts of work. With 60 acres of land, 25 acres of grapes, two houses, two huge barns and a couple small barns, we had more to do than we could get to. One of our top priorities was to rehab the grandmother’s house on one of the secluded peaks for a vacation rental. It is a magnificent spot but you would never know with the overgrown trees, wood fences and barbed wire fencing. All that has changed as you can see from the photos.
Lastly, we wanted this place to be a representation of our life. It is filled with furniture and art collected all over the US and the World. It is so peaceful here that it just called out for a spa and sauna. We especially like the spa perched on the top of the hill overlooking the valley to the west. Comfort was also high on our list – We think you will agree that it has turned out great and is unique.
