'ESQUEREDO' is a delightful house for 4/5 persons - located on the castle wall of the ancient fortified farmstead in the historic village of Fornalutx - with stunning, uninterrupted views of the Puig Major, the highest point in the Tramuntana mountains. (House is seen here bottom center with the 6 dark green windows.) The village side of the house is wrapped around a picturesque and secluded cul-de-sac, offering complete privacy.

FORNALUTX - known as "the village of a thousand years" - was built around the 10th century Moorish tower and fortified farmstead, seen to the left of Esqueredo. The village is an oasis of tranquillity, with historic houses built in mellow, caramel-coloured stone, lining cobbled mule steps rising from above a charming town plaza.

Adjacent to the larger house 'ESQUEREDO' is the wonderfully friendly and inviting guest house, casita 'LA CASA DOS' - a romantic get-away for couples any time of the year. Although completely separate, 'La Casa Dos' can add a double bedroom and bathroom as both houses can be rented on a nightly basis (minimum 5 nights). Again, it is situated right in the most picturesque and ancient part of this enchanting village.

'ESQUEREDO' has Master queen-size bedroom, ceiling fan and spacious en suite bathroom with shower. Second Bedroom with either king-size bed or two singles. Bathroom with large bathtub and shower. Cook's kitchen equipped with gas hob, electric oven, dishwasher, and refrigerator. Utility room with freezer, second refrigerator, washing machine, and storage space. Breakfast room, Dining area. Large split level Lounge/sitting-room with second couch converting into extra double-bed.

Outside: the house is situated in a secluded cul-de-sac, with breakfast/dinner patio adjacent to kitchen and sun terrace adjacent to sitting room on the top floor. 'Esqueredo' - high on the edge of the village and with windows on all four sides - receives gentle micro-breezes even in the hottest, stillest of summers. The thick walls, some over 400 years old, and new roofs provide insulation. All of the plumbing and electrical supply has been newly installed (220v/50Hz.).

'LA CASA DOS' is a charming and intimate traditional casita (fully restored) with queen-size bedroom, Bathroom with shower, Kitchen, with gas hob and oven, refrigerator, and washing machine, Entrada also used as dining area, Sitting-room with VCR, DVD & CD Stereo - and secluded terrace with full sun awning.

FORNALUTX sits nestled in the most spectacular vale within the 'Serra de Tramuntana' - the Valley of Sóller (pronounced Sól-yer). From its Moorish towers and ancient walls, Fornalutx commands fabulous views of orange groves and olive terraces climbing high into the backdrop.

Staying in this historic 'Aldea Mil Años' pueblo, one can almost experience the spirit of the early settlers. The Venetian traders cutting through the high passes in search of olive oil, the then currency of the Mediterranean. The Roman soldiers milling Saharan wheat in the water mills powered by the valley’s abundant springs. The Moors, with their understanding of all things created in stone, ceramic, and terra-cotta.

The very name Fornalutx is the subject of debate. Some say it derives from 'horno' and 'lutz' - describing the men’s view of the carbon burning oven lights as they came down in the evening from harvesting the terraces. Others say that it originates from the glow of the smithy’s forge or 'forja.' Your choice. The smithy is still there, hand crafting beautiful railings and village lamp-posts.

As Fornalutx offers a true oasis of tranquillity in the daytime, scented by citrus trees and almond blossoms - so the imposing peaks of the Tramuntanas fall steeply into the sea, creating coves so sheltered as to be almost invisible. These in turn give way to lush green valleys and, in the winter, rushing 'torrentes.' Many of these areas can be explored from the village by taking the local twisting mountain roads, revealing a different panoramic vista at each turn.

However, it is always a joy to return in the evening to Fornalutx - three times awarded the "Most Beautiful Village in Spain"- to enjoy its five excellent restaurants, three bars, and convivial evening ambiance. The village has been written up in 'Bon Appétit', 'National Geographic Traveler', 'Town & Country' and the 'Los Angeles Times'.

To this day, nobody knows whether the great stones of the ancient olive tree terraces perched precariously on the mountainside, were rolled up the hill, or drawn down. The valley, part of the TRAMUNTANA NATIONAL PARK, is famed for its walking paths, from easy strolls to advanced hiking, climbing and overnight camping.

    • We had a wonderful time at Esqueredo! Your directions and instructions were impeccable. The descriptions and pictures do not do the house justice. It was a wonderful family time for us.

    • We are late in providing our feedback on our holiday in early October. What we experienced was a wonderful house set in a wonderful village. The whole experience from booking to flying home was great and as long as you can cope with steps the quality of the house, the charm of the village, and the setting of the mountains make this a great place to have holiday in.

    • Esqueredo was just as lovely as we remembered, in fact better! The weather was very kind to us and we didn't have to eat indoors once! The beds were so comfy we weren't even looking forward to getting back to our own, which is unusual! The "view from the loo" in the ensuite must be unbeatable! The village is unforgettable, and can't wait to back again, and again, and again....

    • A unique, multi-levelled property of enormous ingenuity and charm, the Esqueredo is itself a memorable experience. Some rental properties can be disappointing, clearly run and outfitted as a business with only the minimal amenities provided, but not so with the 'Esqueredo.' Here is a property that is more than the sum of its photographs; the 'Esqueredo' is truly a home in which one feels immediately welcome. Wonderful views out every window, well-positioned just up from the delightful village square, clean, beautifully and thoughtfully decorated, the house as well as the little town of Fornatulx, cannot fail to please. - Bruce B, UK (August 2008)

    • We very much enjoyed our stay in Esquedero. The house has an enormous amount of character and charm. The views from the upstairs terrace were spectacular and our favourite place to sit enjoying the early morning sun. The village sq was good fun and we all enjoyed people watching while eating delicious ice cream! Soller's beach was a short and easy drive away. We loved the towns of Soller and Deia which are also close by...but most of all we loved Fornalutx. A true gem! It was extremely hot at the end of July into August. The house was hot even with fans going.Next time I would come a little earlier or late summer but the house is so well equipped that winter would be fun also and it would be good to do some heavy duty exploring in cooler weather.Gracias por todo.

    • Christopher, we're in and had our first 2 nights. Quite simply we're blown away by how beautiful your place is. Clearly you have spent considerable time, effort and money making this a special place. We love it. It is almost certainly the nicest holiday accommodation we have ever stayed in, and the free internet connection has meant we have already emailed pictures home to family & friends – a great added extra! Here’s to a week of great walking in spectacular surroundings with a fantastically well equipped house to come home to at the end of the day. Thank you.

    • Spring 2009 will mark our fourth stay in Esqueredo and we highly recommend the location, amenities and hosts. The village of Fornalutx is close to the market town of Soller and to the Port de Soller, where the beach and restaurants are many and varied. However, the village, although it is a destination for bus tours during the day, settles into its true character, a small community centered around the square, by late afternoon. Familiar faces( especially of the local children, who ride bikes and scooters around the small gathering place as their parents relax with an espresso or something stronger) and lively conversation mark the square as a focal point for the local people. However, as temporary residents, we always feel welcome to enjoy the atmosphere. In fact, we felt truly accepted when the owner of the bar knew what our favourite coffees would be before we ordered! As hikers and tennis players who love to read in our spare time, we have discovered our place of escape from the extended winters of the Canadian Maritimes. The trails are magnificent and varied, with the possiiblity of all day hikes, or much shorter walks, with the house as the starting point. If you need transportation, Rosa, the Fornalutx taxi driver will deliver you or pick you up for a reasonable price and her skill on the mountain roads is terrific. The local tennis courts, graced on at least one occasion by "Rafa" and Moya, are red clay and reasonably priced. Booking during the day is simple and the staff is friendly and accommodatiing. The library of books and VHS selections in the house keep us occupied and the kitchen is a dream, complete with a shelf of cookbooks for your reading pleasure. The owners have provided a house "Bible" which anticipates all possible questions and the guest book is a "must read" for ideas about trails, restaurants and tourist sites. We hope you will enjoy Esqueredo as much as we do, as long as you don't try to book it during our eight week stay!

    • My husband and I had a wonderful time ringing in 2008 at beautiful Esqueredo. The owners have clearly put a great deal of thought into making this a lovely and comfortable home-away-from home--fully stocked with books, movies, gourmet cooking equipment, guide books and other tourist information, etc. The town of Fornalutx is perfect--small, charming, and incredibly picturesque, but with every necessary convenience (grocery, bakery, pharmacy, cafes, a couple of wonderful Mallorcan restaurants, etc.). For us, this was the perfect base for bicycle rides in the mountains and to the coast. There are hiking trails everywhere as well. We can't wait to return!
