Red Top is a delightful, classic farm house, located on Singing Brook Farm in Hawley. It sits on the road at the top of the hill, and has a large, south-facing deck with a nice view of the hills. Entry into the kitchen can be directly from the deck in summer, or through the mudroom and laundry room in winter. Accommodations are comfortable, though not luxurious, and well-suited to family life.
The downstairs has a large, eat-in kitchen, an L-shaped dining/living room with large dining table and wood stove, a family room with upright piano, one bedroom with two twin beds and a full bath with tub. Upstairs are the master bedroom with king-size bed, large dormer with two twins, and another small bedroom with a full/double bed, as well as a newly renovated full bath with shower.
Singing Brook Farm, owned by the Parker family since 1919, is surrounded by the lovely Berkshire hills. Most of our 600-plus-acre property is a designated tree farm, consisting of mixed forest from which hardwood is harvested. The fall foliage is spectacular! Our old-fashioned recreation area consists of a small pond (the dammed-up brook - cold!) for swimming, a tennis court, and a picnic area with open fireplace/grill. There are numerous trails through the woods for hiking. Enthusiastic birdwatchers have posted long lists of the many birds spotted on our property.
We are located four miles from the nearest general store and gas station in Charlemont on the Mohawk Trail, and 12 miles from picturesque Shelburne Falls with its many shopping and eating opportunities.
Area activities during the summer: Go river rafting, kayaking, and canoing on the Deerfield River. Enjoy the finest in live chamber music at the Mohawk Trail Concerts, or take a longer trip down to Tanglewood. Experience an Indian Pow-Wow on the Mohawk Trail, and visit picturesque Shelburne Falls, with its many shopping and eating opportunities. Mount Greylock, Mass MOCA, Old Deerfield, and the new Eric Carle museum are all within an hour's drive, as are Williamstown, Greenfield, Pittsfield, and Amherst.
Area activities during the winter: Family-friendly skiing is only a short drive away at Berkshire East in Charlemont, and Mount Snow in Vermont is less than an hour's drive. Cross-country skiing is close by at Stump Sprouts, or bring your skis and blaze a trail into the state forest, which begins less than 1/4 mile down the road from Red Top's driveway. |
