The Marten House is a Plantation style home on Moloaa Bay with great views of this area of the North Shore of Kauai. The incredible 180 degree view of the ocean from this secluded retreat is yours to be had. This was one of the first homes ever built in the Moloaa Bay area, and it was commonly referred to as the Captains House. This property looks out over the bay from a totally private perch above the beach. Neighbors are few and do not have any views of this home or yard from their properties. Very secluded. About the only sounds you will hear are from the ocean, and the birds.
The property is truly a great place to spend a family vacation or have a weekend getaway with someone special, away from the hustle and bustle of life and yet be close enough to enjoy the many amenities the island of Kauai has to offer. From shopping at Costco or the quaint towns of Kapaa and Hanalei, (short 20 minute drive) to zip lining across canyons and valleys to golfing at some of the nicest and uncrowded golf courses you can have it all. Please call to discuss and we can assist you and answer your questions and make this a vacation to remember.
If you enjoy getting away but still have the comforts of life we offer digital cable TV, high speed internet, service with Wifi, and local phone, in this secluded oceanfront setting. The kitchen is well equipped with all that is needed to enjoy your time here, and you can BBQ outdoors with a propane gas grill. The rental calendar has been recently updated 12/20/2011 and is available to view. Please feel free to contact us with inquires, so we can assist you further, or if you have a special request. We offer concierge type service and can arrange catering, parties, reunions, and weddings if you desire for additional fees. The owner has just recently completed some new upgrades to the home, a new ceiling in front room with new remote operated ceiling fans, lighting, painting, new curtains, rods, bedding and a new King size matress for the master bedroom as well as a new sofa in the living room Also we anticipate making some more upgrades that will be starting in January 2012 which will be completed in time for the Winter-Spring season. We are going to install some new flooring in bedrooms, upgrade some additional bedding in the home and other upgrades that will be most enjoyable. Of particular interest is the fire-pit in yard that is overlooking the beach. Imagine your evenings with a small warm fire while overlooking the ocean below or enjoying the dark star filled sky.
Moloaa Bay has one of the most uncrowded sand beaches in all of Hawaii. It is quiet, and not visited by many because of its location a few miles from the main highway. Thus it is a preferred destination for frequent visitors, and many returning guests to Kauai. The Marten House property is situated by itself at a higher elevation than the homes in the community below and surrounding the bay. The experience of real privacy and gorgeous views is unmatched.
December through April is the season for whale watching, and you can enjoy seeing them from time to time right from the yard fronting the home. On any given day you may see Green Sea Turtles, Hawaiian Monk Seals, or Pacific Spinner Dolphins, frolicking in the ocean or on the coral reef below, just 50 feet or so away. Also snorkeling, fishing, surfing, and body boarding await the adventurous and active traveler at one of the best natural locations in Hawaii. This spectacular beach is just a few steps from the home. Beach combing and exploring are some of the fun and favored activities for families, visitors, and returning guests of all ages.
The home has a uniqueness to it that is unmatched in other private estates. The phrase 'Location, Location, Location' always comes to mind when thinking about the sights you will find here. It is rare to find a home like this with so much to offer. We have had some guests return here year after year to enjoy the beauty of this locale and stay at the Marten House. We look forward to helping you have a great time here

Were just back from our trip to Kauai, and must say it was fantastic!! The views, location and privacy along with the comfort was just fantastic. The views were not million dollar views but billion dollar views! Just loved the beautiful sandy white beach with a nice snorkeling reef just directly below us (I now see why they did the filming for Gilligan's Island there). The views inside the house were totally amazing. Really liked how convenient it was in between Kapaa and Hanlei making it nice getting to restaurants and activities. The house has wonderful charm, neat and clean and all the amenities you would ever need. Chayne the landlord, is great to work with and has a gunine concern for your needs and comfort. We have been to Kauai about 20 times, but we must say this was our most enjoyable visit of all, we seemed to like the property more every day we stayed there. We are definitely looking forward to our next visit to the property again soon. We give you are highest endorsement!Recommended for: Age 55+, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Mahalo, It means allot to me to be able to offer one of the great locations in the world at an affordable price. Many local people who have lived on Kauai all their lives tell me it is one of the very best locations on the island. One local family told me they would chose my location over any other on Kauai. Their is a spiritual connection that is hard to explain almost like being in a sacred place. A place to renew your spirit. We have many family reunions here and they always come back.

It has taken me this long to write a review of this place because of the bad taste this place left in our mouths. Even though it is under "new management" I see the same problems are still present. We rented August 2010 for 10 days. There were only 3 of us so we only used two rooms. I asked the agent at the time about how we get a key, he assured me the house would be open when we arrived, that because of the remoteness of the house "there wouldn't be a problem". When we pulled up to the house I knew I made a mistake in renting this place when I saw duct tape used on the screens outside of the house. Windows throughout the house were opened. There was a reason, they couldn't be closed and locked!!! The keys for the house were waiting on a shelf, but that wouldn't help us because the lock didn't work!!!! We left our sandals just inside the front door as any good guest in Hawaii does, only to wake up the next morning to bite marks on all of them!! For the rest of the stay all our scuba gear had to be left in our rental car so they wouldn't be ruined after I found my mask storage container had teeth marks. Cockroaches, yup got pictures of the 2 inch long I smashed one night. I left a bunch of apple banana's on the stove, and found them munch on. Forget about making meals at this place, the cabinets were nasty. Everyday that went by one found more and more rat pee and poop laying around on the shelves. But the rats weren't just in the kitchen, the main bathroom, had a door that lead to the outside, at the bottom had a bent weather strip where rats came in and out of that room, roaming around the tub and sink leaving what they leave behind by the end of the week it was really nasty. The unused rooms bedspread's had rat poop on them. We kept all our possessions in our suitcases for the duration of our stay. We would had love to be able to go somewhere else but couldn't afford that extra expense. So we made the best of it. Had no contract, no recourse, lesson learned. Tip: Pay attention to the pictures that aren't being shown here. There used to be a lot more on this page when we rented. Nothing of the living area except for the kitchen? That should be a red flag. The best thing about the property beside the views, it had a great washer and dryer.Owner response: It took you almost three years to do this review. Need I say more! MUCH HAS CHANGED. Of course you wouldn't know that. However in its worst day it was not anything close to what you described. Rats eating shoes? really, wasn't there enough fruit outdoors? I could say much more but why?

The view is fantastic but the house, sadly is in very poor shape. We were surprised to find out there was no telephone service to the house for making local calls. Cell phone service was in and out. There was no shade unbrella or canapy of any sort to sit under while outside. No patio, just grass, weeds and a ton of biting ants. The inside needs a good scrubbing. The improvements that were discussed in the write up have either not been done or were done very poorly. The cock roach situation inside was overwhelming, we ended up sleeping the last 5 nights in a hotel. The house amenities were slim. I could go on but Im running out of space. I could see this rental as a handy drop in for a couple of nights maybe but not for a 2 week vacation. The biggest downer of the "marten house vacation" was an angry neighbour. Leasons learned here!!!Owner response: No comment since my property manager says it is not true. I will personally go their in April and see for my self.

Everything about this house is special. We stayed for a full week. Really good vibes. A dream come true. The location cannot be beat. Truly. It's really unique. The view of the bay from the house is classic. The stars at night we stunning. The sandy beach is great for swimming and snorkeling and has plenty of shade areas. It's a safe beach for kids and novice ocean swimmers. The house is extremely private. A classic beach style cottage. Nothing super fancy, but totally charming, well appointed, clean and comfortable. It has a big broad lawn surrounded by pine and palm trees. tons of blooming hibiscus and plumeria. The owners were very thoughtful and the house has all the little things you need when traveling. Chayne was very helpful and easy to deal with - a joy. The property manager also knows the house and area very well. All his insights were appreciated. The house is also in an area that is well situated to access all the areas of the island. We'll come back for sure. We can't recommend this house enough. It's truly one of the gems of Kauai. Tip: The drive to the house goes along the yards of the neighbors and isn't the easiest to find at first, but once you know the way it's easy. We recommend arriving during the day to be sure to find your way. Otherwise we didn't see the immediate neighbors. The neighbors we did see on the beach were all super friendly.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

This is a tough review. The other reviews are accurate that the property and location are BEAUTIFUL. It sits up above the bay. You could look at the view all day. And, the Bay is quite, and good for children. The house is run down and borderline maintained. It could use a cleaning overhaul (don't look under any cushions!). 2 bedrooms are fine, but the other 2 are odd. One is in the interior of the house with a window into another bedroom, which is converted from a porch. Down the hill has some issues too. As SOON as we arrived the neighbor quickly informed us that we were driving to the house across his easement and since it was private property we would have to walk down to the main road to access the beach, and not across 10 ft of private property at the bottom of the houses driveway. He additionally went on to scare my kids by saying he wouldn't let his kids sleep there because the house was a fire hazard. The owner should work out some arrangement with this guy. There are no private stairs to the beach from the property. There is also a strange decomposing shack on the property. The property manager was good and checked in on us. The house does have WIFI and laundry. The kitchen has minimal supplies.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Our stay at the Marten House was wonderful! The photos and description are absolutely accurate. The house, though older, is well-stocked and so private although so close to the beach. We loved sitting in the front yard watching the ocean, and the little kids were safe to play there. Thanks, Ron, for all your help in making this family holiday work for us. This is not an up-scale modern property; it is a cottage - perfect for those who want to relax and enjoy the treasure of Moloa'a bay. Would return with no hesitation.Owner response: Thank You Doreen, for your kind remarks, yes the Marten house is perfect for family vacations and getaways. We would gladly have you again and your family again, and do hope you return for another visit. We appreciate that people like you are able to communicate their feelings/experiences here in the way you have done and describe to future guests that the house is accurate and described very well. To all the future renters feel free to call and discuss your travel plans and let us make your stay at the Marten House as memorable as Doreens. Ron

Our stay at Marten House was a dream come true for us. The pictures on the web site are accurate. The property is in a private area with a breathtaking view and a 1 minute walk down your driveway to a quiet beach. Watching the birds and geckos in our yard and seeing whales breach just outside the bay, made our stay extra special. The house is old, as others have said, but don't let that stop you. It's definitely liveable, and I'm as fussy as they come. My ONLY negative comment, and it's not the fault of the owner or manager, is the chickens. The roosters start at 4:00 a.m. and crow all day long. So if you are a light sleeper, I suggest ear plugs. Chickens are everywhere on the island but you‘ll soon learn to co-exist :) Ron, the manager, was extremely accommodating and friendly. He went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable. Thanks Ron!! The house is a 15 minute drive to Kapaa where you can pick up groceries or dine at one of the quaint restaurants in town. The drive to anywhere on the island is doable and breathtakingly beautiful to boot! Be a typical tourist and go on a helicopter tour (unbelievable), a whale watching tour (only saw dolphins and turtles, but still worth it) and take a drive to Hanalei. Stay here……you won’t be disappointed in your choice. Mahalo, Chayne and Ron. See you next year!!Owner response: Thank you also for nice comments about the house and your stay, we really appreciate that you enjoyed your visit here to Kauai and the house exceeded your expectations. It was a pleasure getting to know you and your family, you were very easygoing, I look forward to seeing you next year and assisting you again. Mahalo, Ron

Our family certainly enjoyed the incredible privacy, gorgeous views and easy access for all ages to Moloaa Bay. The house is older but clean and well kept and fit six adults and two young children. Probably best for two couples with kids but we were comfortable. About 20 min to Hanalei Bay, this is the perfect private retreat for those who want seclusion, amazing views and a fabulous beach with no crowds. Would confidently say there is no other property on Moloaa Bay with the view, beach access and privacy. This is not a luxury home but a Hawaiian cottage. Thanks again to Ron for his efforts to make us comfortable. We dream of returning!Owner response: Thanks for you kind words and the 5 stars. We appreciate that you enjoyed your stay and did all we could to make it a good one for you. It is great for everyone to know that people are begining to appreciate that this is a great spot to have a vacation, and that we really try to make it that way for you. We would we happy to have you and your family again in the future. Ron

Our family was very disappointed - the view was fantastic - it was unfortunate that the house did not live up to our expectations. One room that was suppose to be a bed room was a screened in porch with a bed in it, no window - just screens, the house was not clean, doors/locks didn't work, too many issues to list. We actually only stayed one night and only because we arrived so late. keep lookingOwner response: We are under new management, begining September 26, 2011. All issues, reviews, or stays prior to this date happened with old management and is one reason for changing management. As owner I have taken numerous steps to upgrade and maintain the property since May 2011. Installed new caretakers, and made many immprovements. We understand we cannot please every client, but we will try our very best to address any concern a renter has about their stay and want everyone to know that we respect the opinions and views of others. We want people to enjoy the time they stay here at this location and are sorry if they can't appreciate the natural beauty and style of our home as described. We have had pictures posted on this site for many years and will continue to post new ones as more improvements are made. All Ext. door locks now work a have been replaced with new. New bedding and and curtains have begun to be installed, as well new lighting and remote operated ceiling fans, and furniture. We anticipate investing much more to improve and upgrade the visitors experience here. The screened in porch is classified as a bedroom by our local county government and as long as we make a bed available for the 7th or 8th persons to stay in that area of the house, it will continue to be classed as 4 bedrooms we can't change their rules. We have tried to describe it better for future guests. The nice things about that room is that it can be closed off from rest of the house and has it's own bathroom. Also when the temperature is hot, it is the coolest room to be in having great cross ventilation. We do have plans for the future to put regular windows into this area. If you keep looking as suggesed by client you will miss the real Kauai that you can find at the Marten House.
