Why the Owner Chose Soldotna

We are actually in Sterling (10 miles from Soldotna) and we picked this spot for the following reasons: It's about 1 hr and 20 minutes to either Seward or Homer, 30 miles from our door to the Russian River Campground and confluence of the Kenai River, 1 mile from the world famous Kenai River, The Swanson River Canoe Boundary Waters ( 1million acres of protected streams and lakes -no boat motors or float planes) begin 1 mile behind our home, Fred Meyer and the town of Soldotna are only 10 minutes away, and the large amount of wildlife that tramp through our yard!!!

The Unique Benefits at this House

I have tried to cater our home the all around Alaska traveler....the travelers that will be doing it all --fishing, hiking, atving, mt biking, kayaking, boating, sightseeing, fixing meals in the kitchen, if needed ability to stay in touch with the real world. We have done almost all of the activities on the Peninsula and always enjoy giving advice/suggestions to our renters.

Owner's Map of Soldotna

Natalie and I are very active so it was just a matter of time before we discovered Alaska! Since we were married 20 years ago we have logged a lot of traveling miles but after visiting Alaska we decided it would be a regular trip :) and that is how we came to buying a home here!

Brand New Silver Salmon Lodge, Jacuzzi Tub Ready for 2008!

Silver Salmon Lodge is in a class by itself! Should have a 6-star rating for this place!

Silver Salmon Lodge was as incredible as all the sites we saw in Alaska! The cabin is large, clean, and accomodated our party of 6 adults and 1 child. We were there for 10 days and were very active. It was so nice to come home from our daily activities to a beautiful lodge. The furnishings are wonderful with so many extra amenities that you don't find in most rental homes. Here are a few examples: the kitchen is fully stocked with cookware, dishes, and restaurant grade appliances. So nice to be able to cook your fresh salmon for dinner after a long day of fishing. We also loved having the stand-alone freezer to store our many fish for the return trip home. And to have a washer and dryer available! What a lifesaver that was! We also enjoyed the fire pit behind the cabin complete with benches! The location of Silver Salmon Lodge is also great. Loved that it was in a private, large, wooded lot with the beautiful fireweed blooming around the cabin. We went to Alaska to enjoy the beauty of the land and to participate in the many activities. The lodge was our home-base for the week and allowed us to rest in comfort from long days of fishing, sea kayaking, rafting, hiking, and amateur photography. We were also close enough to enjoy a day cruise in Seward complete with whale watching and glacier viewing. My husband and I have traveled a lot and we both agree that our Alaska vacation was the best ever and that was in large part due to our stay at Silver Salmon Lodge.

Silver Salmon Lodge the perfect Alaskan get-away

Guest: Lisa Marie (Atlanta)
Date of Stay: 08/13/11 Review Submitted: 01/11/12

Had the opportunity to stay at SSL for a week in August (2011) and was beyond pleased. The cabin was comfortable and inviting, appointed with all the necessities. And the cabin's location ideal for a wide variety of daily activities, including a day-trip to sea kayak in Homer, hiking and fishing in the Russian River wildlife area and much more. It was also conveniently located to what became our favorite dining destination: The St. Elias Brewing Company. We are already planning a return visit and greatly appreciate that we won't have to research where to stay, we'll be staying at Silver Salmon Lodge.

Comfortable, but some negatives

Guest: Dave (Prescott, AZ)
Date of Stay: 07/23/11 Review Submitted: 08/03/11

We were 2 couples and we recently had a comfortable enough week at the Silver Salmon Lodge in Sterling, Alaska. Location ok and property nice, with some extras (really appreciated the separate freezer for our fish) and upgrades. However, there were some shortcomings, mostly with maintenance and cleaning. The sleeping loft upstairs is not really functional with lots of windows and no drapes in Alaska's long daylight hours. Also, no closet (locked, no key) or storage for your stuff up there. Lots of windows downstairs, but wonder if they've ever been cleaned. Add to that missing bathroom cabinet panels and a few other things (don't bother looking for the firewood that's supposed to be provided--it's not there), the missing landscaping that could add a lot, and it leads to a mediocre rating.

Owner response: Ok this made me laugh! Our home was built in the area that was cut out of the forest of pines and left some extra areas of the natural sand since the tundra was graded out. The ground in Alaska is actually Tundra which is spongy and lumpy but pretty cool to walk on and keeps things from getting muddy, etc. Well when Tundra is disturbed it takes it years to recover. Ours is now again covering about 30% of the open areas and we are very happy about that. I did surround the first 4ft of the outside of the home with palm size river rocks. We routinely have Moose, Bear, Squirrel, Grouse, etc walking right through our yard and around our home. Since we did not install a lawn that requires chemicals, etc we and our rental guest are fortunate to see these native animals from inside the home....something we put a high value on. So you won't see Chemlawn at our place and you won't find any exotic plants in our backyard but you will find all things Native to Alaska!

Beautiful home and great home base location

Guest: Pala (East Bethel, MN)
Date of Stay: 07/09/11 Review Submitted: 08/01/11

Stayed at Frank and Natalie's place early July. A very beautiful home with all the amenities you would have in your own home. Loved the beds - very comfortable and also awesome to have a separate freezer in the home to store all the halibut we had caught to bring home with us. Sterling, AK is a great "home base" location. We went to Ninilichik for Halibut fishing one day, with a quick trip down to Homer and the Russian River for red salmon fishing the next day. We really enjoyed our evenings at the outdoor fire pit talking about our day and making plans for the next. Hard to leave, but we will be back one day!
