Rainbow Dreams Cottage
Rainbow Dreams Cottage is situated on the beautiful Puna Coast of the Big Island, approximately 30 miles southeast of Hilo. Set amidst a 100-year old grove of coconut palms, the cottage faces directly to the Pacific Ocean, where spectacular sunrises set the tone for each day. Just a few hundred yards down the road is the picturesque village of Opihikao, which consists of a Congregational Church and an emergency phone.
With a direct view of the ocean, you may spend your whole vacation simply gazing at the waves, yet the cottage is the perfect base for exploring the unique natural and cultural heritage of the Big Island. Hilo is the orchid growing capital of the world and is home to several magnificent botanical gardens, museums, galleries, and restaurants. The main attraction of the area is Volcanoes National Park, a 45-minute drive away, where you can see active lava flows and witness the formation of the newest land on the planet. The closest town to the cottage is relaxed Pahoa, a quick ten minute drive away, with several grocery stores, a large farmer's market, a health food store, banks, restaurants, and other conveniences.
All along the coast in the rural Puna District, you will discover special places to explore, from scenic parks to sheltered coves. Three miles from the cottage is exotic Kehena Beach, where palms and ironwood trees frame a lovely crescent of black sand. Two miles in the other direction is MacKenzie State Park, where steep lava cliffs form a rugged, rocky shore. MacKenzie Park also has interesting hiking trails and accessible lava tubes for spelunking. Five miles from the cottage is Ahalanui State Park with a naturally heated fresh/salt-water swimming pond. And, a little further down the road is Kapoho Tide Pools for some of the best snorkeling on the east side of Hawaii.
Rainbow Dreams Cottage is the perfect eco-retreat, where you can really get away from it all. We have been proudly off the grid since 2000, operating with alternative energy - solar power and catchment from the rain for water. And, without any major resorts or condominium developments nearby, you'll find yourself surrounded by the beauty of old Hawaii and immersed in the splendor of tropical paradise.

My girlfriend and I stayed for four nights during the late summer of 2012. We absolutely fell in love with everything about the property. The size of the cottage is perfect for two people (four would be more than comfortable as well). The view from the lanai was so wonderful that we ended up not moving from our chairs for hours on end. We just enjoyed decompressing from the real world and spending time together. Everything was in excellent condition, the bed was comfy and the outdoor shower was terrific; although I may have given the female caretaker a bit of a surprise when she was walking up the side of the property! We both turned away in alarm! :) We cannot wait to return, thank you for making this amazing property available for such a reasonable rate. Ken and Tracy, San DiegoRecommended for: Romantic getaway, families with young children, age 55+, girls getaway, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, sightseeing.

We arrived exhausted and this place worked its magic. The amazing ocean view, beautiful grounds and nicely decorated cottage were even better than described. And, we loved visiting the nearby black sand beaches, great snorkeling, delicious restaurants (especially Thai food), and fantastic farmers markets in Hilo, Maku'u and Pahoa. Having no internet and cell phone at the cottage was heavenly to unplug from the pace of the workaday world on the mainland. And there are internet cafes and cell service within a short drive down the road and the nearest town. We really loved this amazing place and can't wait to come back again soon. The view is transfixing - we saw dolphins from the front porch!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thanks very much! We hope that you can come back and enjoy more time at the Cottage in the future.

About the owner: We spend as much time as we can at this magical property and always find it to be transformational and rejuvenating. I grew up in New England, went to college in Philadelphia, and currently reside in San Francisco. I work for a nonprofit organization that supports the national parks near the Golden Gate and helped to organize the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Why the Owner Chose Opihikao:
We looked all over the State of Hawaii for our perfect place and found many areas that we loved, including Hanalei Bay on Kauai, and Hana, Maui, and this area reminded us of those areas, and we liked the nearness to Hilo, which is the second largest city in Hawaii after Honolulu. We especially liked the rugged quality of the Puna Coast and the primal feeling of the land in this area. We have many repeat visitors, because people love coming back again and again to this special place.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The Rainbow Dreams Cottage is extremely unique in its proximity to the ocean and its surroundings in an area that is entirely dominated by the beauty and serenity of the natural world. Also, the off-the-grid experience is becoming more and more unique as people need a place to unplug and get away from the daily bombardment of internet, email, and other ways that we constantly connect in the communications age. But for those that need to be connected, it's just a short drive in either direction to access the web and cell service.
