Huckleberry Hideaway at Light Heart Retreat is nestled in amongst old growth pine and spruce overlooking Taunton Bay and the Lucerne Hills to the west. From your second story deck you can look southward onto the Sacred Stone Circle, ala` Stone Henge. Looking east out the bedroom you can see the sunrise over the largest quarry at the retreat. Everywhere you look, nature greets you with a warm and welcoming smile...not another soul in sight nor is there the noise that often accompanies many vacation rentals. (Located in the adult section of Light Heart Retreat.)

“Toto, I think we're not in Kansas anymore.”

You’ve found your way to magical, mystical Light Heart Retreat, where heaven touches earth. Solitude and beauty--safe sanctuary in our changing times, is beckoning you to return to your Light Heart.

The Huckleberry Hideaway was designed and built with much love and respect, with pine and granite from the retreat. Though initially planned as a one bedroom cottage for a couple or a single person on retreat, the choice to have two bedrooms has proven to be divinely inspired. Sometimes a loving couple needs to have their own space in which to dream their own dreams. And sometimes friends make good, respectful housemates to share a retreat with.

The two bedrooms are private to each other. The master bedroom is on the second floor with a private half bath, skylights and sliders out to the west facing deck. There's a bodywork table with linens supplied in this spacious room. The first floor bedroom is immediate to the full bathroom and has a skylight and entry onto a private granite patio. This bedroom is bumped out from the main house, so guests in each bedroom have their own quiet and privacy, as desired.

The Huck’s kitchen is well stocked with herbs. spices, oil, vinegar, foil, etc. You can cook, barbecue on the grill and even bake cookies if you want to. The dining nook table is pub style giving you great views to look out upon the changing light, birds and wildlife.

There’s a built in u-shaped window seat and comfy chairs facing the glass fronted wood stove. The radiant in-floor heat and the wood stove keep guests toasty year round. When damp, snow or cold winds keep you inside, you’ll be cozy and still connected to nature through the views provided by the ample windows.

Guests of the Huckleberry have a private outdoor hot tub on the south patio and access to a wood-fired sauna on the quarry. The stewards of the retreat maintain gardens, hiking trails and swimming areas on this 100 acre old growth forest and granite quarry ponds. There’s a library with holistic, spiritual and some mainstream reading and media.

Additional amenities include your own fire pit, a canoe on each quarry and a meditation hut that overlooks Bragdon Quarry, a serene place to meditate, canoe, sunbathe, bird watch and skinny dip.

You don’t have to pack a large bag when you visit. Your Huckleberry Friend has a laundry room with washer and dryer. You can travel light when you come here and when you leave you’ll be feeling even lighter. The stewards love to see the transformation that guests experience here reflected in a more youthful, relaxed countenance. Is the muse of Light Heart Retreat calling you?

We loved our stay in the Huckleberry HIdeaway and we are sure we will be back. We never got a chance to use the wood stove and are thinking a winter trip to use the hot tub and the wood stove is in order! We really like the cabin. The granite structural column is just magnificent and we enjoyed all the careful planning that went into the design--everything from the specific location of the cabin, nestled against the granite bank, to the colors of the tiles and linens. And it smells wonderful! We love the streaming sun in the afternoons over Taunton Bay. We also loved the quarry, turned garden, with the playful stones everywhere, the osprey and kingfishers hunting and the huge warm slabs of granite stretching into water full of fish and frogs. The subtle balance games of some of the stone arrangements are really wonderful! After a couple of hard years, this was a great and special place for a get-away-from-it-all vacation. This was just the recipe for the two of us to reconnect. Thank you David and Joanna for making this lovely, tranquil garden retreat.

It seems we are the Huckleberry’s most faithful visitors, as this is our 8th time we’ve made the trip from Boston. We love it here, always finding the beauty of Maine restorative. Each visit delights us with new discoveries. This time it was old dowtown Ellsworth, where we ate a good meal at Finn’s, an Irish pub and bought some local, Maine-made toys at a nice little children’s shop. Perhaps it is bold to head north in March, but its been such a mild winter. Although we encoutered a snow squall on the way up, the weather has been very spring-like and warm, the mud minimal. The hot but and fire were perfect. As always, we wish we could stay longer. We hope to carry some of the peace with us as we venture back home.

Thank you for having us stay in this precious place. You are wonderful to share this, your home, with others. Being able to be so intimate with Nature especially made me feel close to God. The kids loved the fishing and canoeing. We’ll remember this place and time forever...the peace and the fun we had as a family. ~ Maria and family, RI and Brazil

Has been so nice to be back here enjoying the water, the woods. Have had a fun time trying out all the small trails in the woods, getting lost and finding the right connections, refinding places from my last stay. Lots of berries, the strawberries are ripe, the blueberries soon and the chanterelle mushrooms were so nice and more than I have ever seen, light the forest up with gold. Thank you for a great stay.

We cannot thank you enough for a spectacular weekend at the wonderful Huckleberry Hideaway. We had high expectations coming into our stay here, and the retreat far surpassed them! We feel so lucky to have found this amazing place. From ample soaks in the hot tub to walks through the winter wonderland of trails and quarries, to snuggling and watching the fire burn...our time here has been perfect. Joanna, the butternut bread was unbelievable! David, we sincerely appreciate you trekking out in the below freezing temps to get the sauna ready for us! We feel amazingly relaxed and restored after our time here. We can’t wait to return!

From the fresh baked banana bread to the welcome soak of the hot tub, the Huckleberry is definitely a place we would recommend. The cottage was clean and well maintained, with wonderful accents that made the stay most enjoyable. We only wish we could have stayed longer!

My and I were looking for a place to really relax and get away from the hustle of daily life. We were on Homeaway searching for a comfortable looking house in a place that offered options to both do nothing and to have access to some good outdoor activities (hiking, biking, swimming). At the last minute this property popped up and we took right away. We were a bit nervous about the Maine weather as we drove north from Boston, but realized how comfortable the house was and that if it rained all week, we could still have a great relaxing vacation. We had great weather, access to Acadia and Mt. Dessert Island without the hassle of big crowds every moment. We spent several days hiking and biking in the Sullivan/Hancock area and actually found much charm there without the busy roads and crowded shops. We did enjoy cooking our own meals (this would not be a good place for folks wanting nightlife as the road in has bumps and challenges and is a bit better during the day). The peacefulness that has been carved out in house was a true gift to us. Feel free to contact me for more details.

We have just returned from a glorious week at the Huckleberry Hideaway at the Lightheart Retreat in Sullivan, Maine. The Huckleberry Hideaway is one of three properties available to rent at the 60 acre retreat. Each is set in its own garden away from its neighbors, so the house was very private and peaceful. There are two swimming lakes on the property each with canoes that guests may use, and a sauna. Acadia National Park is a short drive away, as is the less visited Schoodic Point and there are numerous excellent restaurants close by - a special mention should go to the Crocker House Inn where we had a memorable dinner. Our hosts, Joanna and David were warm and friendly and provided lots of local information about restaurants etc that added to our week's enjoyment. The brief orientation session at the start of our stay was helpful and ensured that we knew how to use the sauna, hot tub, canoe etc right from the start. The property listing was accurate but failed to convey the very special nature of the building and its location. Clearly alot of thought has gone into the design and layout of the house and as a result it is full of light and captures the most gorgeous views - our favorite being the setting of the sun over Taunton Bay. The kitchen was very well equipped and spotlessly clean. The beds were wonderfully comfortable and the showers were hot, with great pressure. But it was the little extra touches such as the vase of wild flowers and the home-made bread that awaited our arrival, or the hand-made soaps that placed this rental in a class of its own. We would strongly recommend this rental to anyone looking for a thoroughly relaxing vacation in a wonderfully comfortable house, set in a beautiful, peaceful location.

August 22, 2009 Namaste`! We are nearing the end of our second August visit to the Light Heart Retreat, or more specifically, to the Huckleberry Hideaway. We have come to look at this time as our New Year’s, a time in which we rebuild and fortify ourselves for the year ahead. The Light Heart Retreat centers us, and brings us not only peace, but answers. The opportunity to be immersed in nature in such a remarkable jewel of a place, so consciously maintained and shared by its stewards is a rare and wonderful thing--a gift, truly. I am extremely grateful for the thoughtful presentation of this place and all of its environs, but I am even more grateful for the compassion the LHR’s owners show for our fragile world. There’s a lot to appreciate about this place as a rental--its cleanliness, warmth, and comfort, but there’s also a lot we can learn here, provided we arrive with eyes open. And if we don’t, we surely leave with them as such. What a Wonderful World! Peace, Lauren and David

We are honored to hold the space here on this sacred land, for those such as yourselves, who can most benefit by their stay here. We are not right for everyone. For those who come seeking peace and solitude in nature, with "eyes open", Light Heart Retreat can fulfill whatever heart felt intention is sincerely given. Blessings to you both and we look forward to your next visit, Joanna & David

About the owner: David Buell and Joanna Pinney Buell are the hard-working stewards of a very special place on planet earth, called Light Heart Retreat. David is a stone artisan, gifted pianist, poet and inspired gardener. Joanna has many years in the holistic and spiritual healing field, is an inspired cook, gardener, writer and designed the retreat houses and their own home, at Light Heart Retreat. Together David and Joanna share a deep love and respect for nature, of the Great Spirit and of humanity. They delight in seeing the transformations that happen for the guests of Light Heart Retreat.

                                  Why the Owner Chose Sullivan:
The Huckleberry Hideaway is one of 2 adult only retreat houses offered at Light Heart Retreat. No words can rightly capture the spirit of peace, tranquility and beauty that this space exudes from within and that which is part of the surroundings. This year-round house is for adults only and is best suited to one or two couples as well as making a very wonderful retreat space for an individual. This is not our own home...it is a space designed and built with deep intention for those who are seeking beauty, peace, rest, renewal, peace and inspiration. Light Heart Retreat offers all of this and there is the added benefit of being just 30 minutes away from Acadia National Park with it's vistas of the Atlantic and great hiking. The Huckleberry has a fully equipped and well stocked kitchen for cooking at home or one can treat themselves to some fine dining locally.

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
I love the opportunity to retreat to the Huckleberry myself, (Joanna) especially in the winter and early spring. Though the outdoor hot tub is a delight anytime, I especially enjoy it on a snowy night or a spring morning when the birds are beginning to sing. The long view from the balcony of Taunton Bay and the Lucerne Hills is is particularly nourishing to the soul when arrayed in autumn's reds and golds. I like to begin and end a winter's day in the rocking chair in front of the wood stove. There is no place I'd rather be on retreat than at our very own Huckleberry HIdeaway at Light Heart Retreat. Our guest book is filled with many thanks for the special touches and warm welcome our guests receive at Light Heart Retreat. Guests of the Huckleberry Hideaway enjoy a homemade loaf of bread upon their arrival and have a seasonal floral arrangement on their dining room table. There really in no place like Light Heart Retreat. Where can you go on retreat, have the comfort of a well designed retreat house, privacy, quiet, solitude, beauty, beauty, beauty...a wood-fired sauna, library and not be sharing it with 30 or more other guests? It's just us and the guests of the two retreat cottages and occasional guests at the Quarry House, on 100 acres with a gated entry. We offer so much that is of REAL value here. The retreat is 30 minutes from Acadia National Park. The Park is phenomenal, but crowded. Bar Harbor is a pleasant place to visit and very crowded in the high season. Cottages on Mount Desert Island cost 3 times our fees for a similar size rental. But why compare apples to oranges though? See our site. Your heart will call you here if Light Heart Retreat is for you.
