Our lovely little house is in Pukawa near Turangi on the bottom end of Lake Taupo (North Island of New Zealand), overlooking the lake and surrounded by birdsong and native bush in the heart of historic Maori country.
The house is perfect for single, romantic or family holiday - three bedrooms (with beds and bunks to sleep 9 with kids), and plenty to do depending on the time of year - lake activities, boats/swimming, trout fishing in Tongariro River, Pukawa stream and lake (for lake boat charters call Bill Grace 07 386 6614 / 027 620 7326), skiing on Mt Rupahu in Tongariro National Park.
A gentle two-hour walk around scenic Rotopunamo Lake in the National Park, the one-day Tongariro Crossing "best walk in NZ", bush trails in the nature reserves adjoining the village, hot pools to soak in Tokaanu, NZ Trout Center, etc. Or just relaxing and not doing a lot except enjoying the view from the deck. Great eating at the Oreti Restaurant in Pukawa itself 07 386 7070, and the highly-rated lakeside Lakeland House Restaurant 07 386 6442 in Waihi.
It takes about 4 hours to drive from either Auckland or Wellington (particularly beautiful drive across the Desert Road from Wellington), 40 minutes from Taupo Airport and 15 minutes from Turangi.
