I can't sing the praises of this home and its owners enough. I thought I had written a review, but can't seem to locate it, so would like to reiterate why we love staying here. The house is extremely well maintained, very comfortable, tastefully furnished, with a well stocked kitchen and all the amenities of a perfect home away from home. The location is in one of the nicest areas of Bend, the Newport Westside area and in walking distance to downtown Bend and Drake Park. Across the street are coffee houses and bakeries, and one block over on Newport are a market, Yogurt shop, and restaurants. It is also in walking distance to a number of parks, the Mill District and Galveston area. The owners are constantly upgrading the home and it includes WiFi. We have been staying here for a number of years and schedule our trips around the home's availability. We normally stay here by ourselves with our dog, but have brought other family members with us occasionally and have had plenty of space for us all. An extra bonus for my husband and myself is that the home is down the street from the home of my son, daughter-in-law and little grandson. We feel fortunate indeed to have found such a perfect vacation home in a town we love, close to our loved ones. We thank the owners for their meticulous care and upkeep of this home and for all their constant upgrades.

Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, age 55+, families with teenagers, sightseeing, tourists without a car, romantic getaway.

Owner response: Thank you Mickie--guests like you make it a pleasure to share our home. It is a mutual thing, this owner/guest relationship--we love it when those who come enjoy the house and their stay, and then keep coming back.

Thank you to Sandy for sharing her Milwaukee House. The location is perfect. We traveled for a weekend with our adult children. It was our first time in the high desert. Milwaukee House is a great home base. Steps away from the best coffee in the great northwest, close to downtown, groceries and all that Bend has to offer. One night we probably used all the blankets in the house and got cozy on the couch to watch a movie on the vintage Sony TV. When we first arrived we noticed the water was cold but it wasn't until the next morning that we figured out we had to turn up the water heater (turned it down again as we left). The property was super clean - lots of towels and linens.

This is the third time we have stayed in this Westside cottage. The location is ideal with its' immediate proximity to Newport Market, Nancy P's and several good restaurants. It's an easy walk to the river, downtown and a close-by park if you have small children/grand kids. It has spoiled us with its' handy location. The cottage has had some updates this past year which were a nice improvement. It does have the necessary amenities. The cottage is very fairly priced and the owner is very easy to communicate with.

Bend is a remarkable town with many things to do and this house is conveniently located on Bend's trendy West Side very near the Newport Market. The house has two bedrooms and can accommodate up to six people, but it is so affordable that I never felt the need to bring more than one other couple. There is plenty of room and I hosted Thanksgiving Dinner there twice. The kitchen is well stocked with cooking gear and all the utensils you'd need to eat in. With the Newport Market so close it's a hard decision whether to eat in or walk to one of the many nearby restaurants. While conveniently located, the cozy house is actually in a neighborhood making it private and quiet. Parking was never difficult even with the very popular Nancy P's bakery across the street. The home is dog friendly, but you would never know that pets had been in the home before you. It is always fresh and clean upon arrival and there are simple instructions to provided to make your stay very enjoyable. There is free internet access as well. There is a refundable deposit, but no additional cleaning fee which is unheard of in this market. Whether you want to come in the winter to go skiing or the in the summertime to enjoy all of the many festivals that Bend has to offer, you can't go wrong staying here. I have used this as a second home for the past 6 years and am only willing to share the secret of this lovely place because I finally bit the bullet and moved here!

I am coming in October, leaves turning color, cool temps, peaceful town after all the summer fun. thanks for being one of our regulars!

The Milwaukee house has such a great location for staying on foot! On a neighboring block is a coffee shop and extensive gourmet market, then just across Newport Ave is a another coffee shop that sells the famous Sparrow Bakery treats, plus a good breakfast/lunch place Chow (think local ingredients, creative, with many vegetarian options). We also enjoyed taking our son on short walks to downtown, to the many small parks bordering the river, or the many shops along Galveston near Columbia Ave. These include 10 Barrel, a large local fruit/berry stand with a growler refill place and local butcher shop inside, and Baked specializes in breads and savory stuffed creations similar to a calzone-- open afternoon to evening. The remodel is very tasteful, with lots of tile, wood floors, and a cute front garden. The bathroom is adequate size, a little larger than the photo looks. (No need to worry about this house needing TLC like so many homes we saw walking around Bend). The kitchen had everything we needed for a little cooking and breakfasts in. Linens were plush and plentiful. Look for the free weekly newspaper The Source, as Bend had tons of live music and 2-3 festivals while we were there. The farmer's market on Wed. afternoon was also fun to catch. Old Mill District was a pretty standard new-development shopping area with restaurants rather generica vs. the quality and diversity of downtown, but with an adjacent river walk, outdoor music venue and river beach area. Somehow tourist info. made it sound quite different. Our one disappointment was the portable A/C unit which is only adequate to cool the front room. We thought the cabin had central, but must have confused it with another listing. The combined sitting/dining/kitchen area is comfortable, especially with the ceiling fan also on. The master bedroom really gets no help though. With highs in the low 90s this bedroom was at 82 degrees come bedtime, and sometimes stayed this hot until nearly midnight. We experimented with circulating the air with the central heating system, moving the one small fan to different spots in the hall or just drawing in outside air later at night. None of these tricks worked well. It's possible that these ideas might work slightly better in the smaller, front bedroom with its door closer to the den, or if you're really desperate the couch has an air mattress hide-away bed. It would help to at least buy 1-2 large box fans for the windows.

Owner response: yes, it does get hot in Bend, and you hit one of the hottest spells ever. so sorry you did not get cool enough--usually the A/C unit generates enough air, and you can move the air down the hall with the fans. I am not fond of heat myself, so I wait for other seasons, but many coastal folks love it, and for dessert dwellers, well, they don't call it hot. the pullout in the living room, under the ceiling fan and across form the a/c, is actually comfortable. but i will take your comments seriously and look into getting a second unit for the master.

Sometimes these experiences are hit or miss but this one was definitely a hit! Five of us planned a trip down two bend for Deschutes Crabfest and ended up booking this house for our visit. It was clean, comfortable and you couldn't ask for much more regarding location. From the front porch you can see Chow which is my favorite place to eat breakfast/brunch in bend, even before this trip. We were also walking distance to many of the breweries that were on the list for us to complete the Bend Ale Trail. The closes brewery is 10 Barrel Brewery which is a 0.4 mile walk from the house. I would definitely recommend this house for anyone that is exploring Bend and wants to have comfort and location for a very reasonable price. Even though we didn't have a pet with us I loved how pet friendly the house was with toys and pet throws for them to lay around on. Definitely an attraction for any pet owner!!!!

I meant to write this sooner, but time hasn't diminished our memories of how wonderful it was to rent your home. We can stay with friends in Bend (some now only a few houses away!) but prefer mornings on our own. Having a free place to stay available means we look carefully for value and location in a rental. Your place has both and more. We typically rent homes 3-4x a year and have for years, so we've seen many houses for comparison. What makes your home so enjoyable is that it feels like a home rather than a motel or student dorm. Especially in Bend, investors picked up bargains and furnished them with obvious cast-offs or cheap plastic furniture that give the space an empty or institutional feel, despite the fancy bedding one usually finds. But your house has comfortable seating, reading lamps where people would actually sit, enough kitchen equipment to cook and not just heat food, and the small touches that make the space feel inviting such as curtains, rather than cold Venetian blinds and a music system rather than just a big tv. The location couldn't be better: within walking distance of everything we enjoy about Bend. We walked to the Old Mill district, downtown and of course enjoyed great restaurants a block away. I'm so glad we found this gem. We will be back!

My husband and I stayed in this house for a week and had friends come stay with us over the weekend. It was so perfect. It was a 15 minute walk to downtown Bend , a 30 minute drive up to Bachelor, and literally right across the street from a great super-market and other shops. There is a coffee shop that roasts their own beans, a breakfast/lunch spot called Chows (which I highly recommend), a smaller organic grocery store (this is in addition to the great grocery store across the street from the house), a yum bakery, a salon (if you need a haircut, Headlines is the place to go!!), a resale clothing store, a large pool hall and a self serve yogurt shop. All of these places I highly recommend. If you are into mtn. biking, there is a rental shop just three blocks from the house. The house was well equipped. There were plenty of sheets, towels, and blankets. The kitchen had plenty of pots, plates, cups and silverware, but could use a colander. There was a nice little front and backyard for a dog to hang out in too. The beds were plenty comfortable, although we did not try the convertible bed. The house was clean,.everything worked well and appeared as it does in the pictures. We were able to pickup a wireless internet connection in the house. The owner was incredibly helpful and would always answer my emailed questions within the day. I would stay here again and plan to in the future! If you love the outdoors, good food and beer, visit Bend and stay here, where you are close to it all.

Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, sightseeing, tourists without a car, romantic getaway.

Owner response: What can I say except thanks so much for all this wonderful, invaluable feedback. And one colander coming up! There was one there, but sometimes, not often, things walk away.. I am going to spend some time in March at my house in Bend--to see family and to do my quaterly fix-up--this time I will have a cable internet connection added since many guests have asked for it. We love working on the house (more like plalying really), and are grateful for our fabulous support from our local housekeeper and resource par none! I delighted you enjoyed yourselves and hope you will come again. p.s.--just got back and now have hi-speed internet & wireless for our guests. And I bought a new colandar...the old one was found, but it's a bit small...all feedback is appreciated!

                      Year Purchased: 2007

About the owner: Sandra Rich, owner, bought the Milwaukee House because we stay in Bend frequently ourselves. We love being so near downtown, walking our hound thru the neighborhoods and in the parks along the river, having coffee in town or across the street, enjoying the street fairs and other events nearby. We spend time hiking on nearby river trails, strolling thru downtown, getting out in the natural wonder of this special place. The house is just our style--open, light, comfortable, functional, done but not over-done. So relaxing and fun--Bend is a rare and beautiful place. We love the people and the many activities available. We usually meet family there for reunions in a place everyone loves. Fortunately, we can share this place with family & guests, many who come back regularly. Our neighbors in Bend often have visiting family stay at our place.

                      Why the Owner Chose Bend:
Location! We have been coming to Bend for years, and then one of our sons & his family moved there, so we found this lovely little house, downtown west side, 3 blocks to river. We soon became fans of Nancy P's bakery, and also the popular Back Porch Coffee House. We love our vintage craftsman home renovated with new wood flooring, upgraded kitchen, laundry, baths, heating, electrical system, fenced yards for dogs & kids. We have our favorite haunts--see the basket on the counter for suggestions...We enjoy working on the landscaping and adding furnishings & art. Bend is a special place, as those who live in Oregon know and others discover. Some love the golf courses, others the clean air and beauty, and for activity-lovers, the bicycle courses and many snow, sun, trail,& water sports, events and town fairs. There is plenty to do for the active and very relaxing for anyone seeking R & R or just time to read, write, paint...we can't wait til we get back there ourselves.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
The Milwaukee House offers the comforts of home because it is a home--not just a rental. A real cook's kitchen, furniture & beds! Just relaxing on the front porch is wonderful, a perfect spot to watch the world go by on a street lined with trees and friendly passers-by. Downtown (with all the shops & restaurants and Drake Park on the river) is very close, so we never drive or search for parking, and Nancy P's has indescribable treats. Newport Gourmet Market just across the street has everything if we choose to eat in or bbq. The river, 3 easy blocks, is story-book scenic and inviting year-round. We enjoy exploring, hiking, & motorcycling in the countryside--high desert & gorgeous mountain terrain. Good fishing nearby, lots of music especially in the summer, events & sports of all kinds & walking paths along the river that go for miles. it's always fun. Many golf, ski, and bike enthusiasts come back again and again.
