Location: La Motte, Provence, France, Europe (45 minutes from Nice Airport)
Accommodations: House, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths (Sleeps 4)
Our home, the Bastide des Jonquières, is situated 400 metres from the charming, unspoilt village of La Motte-en-Provence and on a vineyard with views of a rolling countryside. it is both a haven of tranquility and about as central as one can be to experience the pleasures of Provence. Less than ten minutes from the Les Arcs train station, the TGV will put you in the center of Paris in under five hours. It is 45 minutes west of Nice airport and seven minutes from the Le Muy/St. Tropez exit of the A8 Autoroute. The Mediterranean at Ste. Maxime is 30 minutes away with St. Tropez a short distance further on the coast drive.
Aside from Nice, Cannes, Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, and Marseille, which are all close by, one can be in Monte Carlo, Italy, or high up in the Basse Alpes in little more than an hour. Ditto for the Gorges du Verdon, France's Grand Canyon on a delightfully human scale.
The house itself is small: living/dining room/kitchen downstairs and large bedroom/ bathroom up. There is a separate, one-room studio with its own kitchen and bath. The Bastide is suitable for one couple (queen-size bed) and the studio for a couple or two children. Between the house and studio is a flagstone terrace with a stone barbecue overlooking a large, very private, oleander-ringed pool; there is also a boules court with balls and instructions on how the game is played.
Our home (where we live six months of the year) is furnished with antiques and has a fully equipped kitchen as well as a large raised fireplace perfect for grilling. It is centrally heated. The digital satellite TV/FM brings in several hundred French and international TV channels and FM stations. Available also for renters' use is an eMAC computer with wireless, broadband internet access, a fax machine, answering system, and a CD player with jazz and classical audiotapes, as well as an extensive library which includes maps, guide books, and cookbooks.
The village of La Motte boasts the typically agreeable Provençal amenities: a butchery, an award-winning bakery, a general grocery, pharmacy, and bar-tabac. This is well supplemented by numerous village markets in the area, held on different days of the week. They are a delight for fresh produce, cheese, charcuterie, olive oil, etc. La Motte is also a center of the wine appelation Côtes de Provence and is surrounded by vineyards and wineries for visits and tastings. Large supermarkets are close at hand for stocking up on general provisions.
Five minutes away is the Saint Endreol golf course, reputed to be one of the finest in Provence.
La Motte is a wonderful base for walks (our favorite leads to a nearby 60-foot waterfall), has an active tennis club. and a lively calendar of social and cultural events throughout the year. High culture, of course, abounds in nearby cities. For example, Nice's ballet company and its symphony orchestra now play in the splendor of a recently renovated, beaux arts opera house.
Provence is a beautiful place with many memorable sites. This petit paradis is one of them.

We have lived in our La Motte house about six months a year for the last decade. We particuarly enjoy its quiet seclusion and delight in its gardens - over 600 irises and 50 rosebushs - and fruit trees - figs, apricots, plums, apples, hazelnuts and table grapes. The vineyard we look at doesn't actually belong to us. But it might as well. The grapes are mourvedre and the rosé wine it produces is one our favorites at La Motte's wine coop. We've also found that our location close to the autoroute and train station makes it much easier to get to and from, which is a real plus for anyone who likes to minimize traveling time and hassle. Happily all our guests and tenants have enjoyed our place at least as much.
