Location is great with a lovely walk to captiola along the ocean. It is close enough to Santa Cruz and great hikes (big basin state park!!) - but removed enough for some peace and quiet. We discovered Gayle's bakery which is a very close drive and a wonderful spot for breakfast or lunch. The cottage was perfect - with comfortable beds and an equipped kitchen with everything we needed to make our meals. We would come again!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

My husband, our 3 year old daughter and my best friend had a great stay here. The garden was wonderful for our daughter to play in as we made meals or drank coffee on the patio. We loved walking into Capitola village, visiting the beach and going for runs long the cliffs. Easy access from here to Monterray Bay Aquarium, the old growth redwoods in Felton, the boardwalk in Santa Cruz by car, plus San Francisco as well. If you want to stay put and out of your car, you could spend days just enjoying life in walking distance of the cottage. The owners were helpful but unobtrusive and we would certainly try to return in the future!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We loved the cottage with almost private enclosed garden. It was as described, clean and neat. Everything we needed was there..... It was quiet, sunny and had a lovely garden. The kitchen was well appointed although the gas kettle was odd for me. Lots of hot water, good shower, comfy bed albeit a small double. The owner was very helpful with info and printing whale watching tickets. There are a lot of interesting places near the house, plus having a private beach key was excellent. We would definitely stay again another year. Many thanks!!Owner response: Thanks for the nice review- it was a pleasure to have you! Just to clarify for others checking reviews: The big bedroom has a queen sized bed, the smaller bedroom has the smaller beds.

We loved staying at Madeline's cottage. Hugh was very responsive throughout the reservation process. The cottage was exactly as portrayed in the description and photos. The neighborhood is a nice one and very quiet. There's a Whole Foods right nearby plus all kinds of stores and coffee shops. We especially enjoyed the enclosed outdoor space where our 4-year-old could play outside safely, and the tricycle the owners left out was an unexpected plus! Note that the bathroom is en suite with the second bedroom so this would not be a great choice for 2 couples. This is a great retreat for a small family or good friends!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Family enjoyed our short stay in this clean, quiet cottage. 2 yr. old grandson loved exploring the garden, and when we went to the beach, we had it all to ourselves! No negatives. Totally enjoyed this place. If we have the chance, we'll be back.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Our stay at Madeline's cottage was a delight! The cottage itself is quaint and cozy - loved the huge kitchen/dining area and the garden is amazing! My two, young children loved playing in the yard and exploring all the magical areas within! An easy walk to Capitola or Pleasure Point while still being far enough away from it all so you can really relax at the end of the day. The owners were more than gracious with my family - we had everything we needed and more! We definitely would love to book another stay here soon! Thanks again Hugh and Marylou for your hospitality!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

This is a lovely cottage that lived up to all the descriptions. It's location and position was everything we could have asked for. It was well equipped and the garden is an absolute gem. It serves two people really well (four would be cosy and less convenient because of the layout ). We had no complaints at all and would recommend it without reservation.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We had a great time at this cabin. We found everything we needed here: well stocked kitchen, plenty of beach towels (though in late December we didn't need too many) and plenty of space for the two of us. The owners were very accomodating and even let my husband borrow their bike to take out for a surf while I was away with the car. In my mind it's little extras like this that made the stay here so remarkable. The location was possibly the best part about our stay. We loved staying so close to privates, being able to walk to the break with our surfboards was such a pleasure. With the hook and pleasure point also very close, we had our fill of surfing while we stayed. We could walk to Capitola and also to the restaurants & shops on 41st Ave, which was so convenient and really enjoyable. Being able to avoid the parking situation in Capitola was a major plus. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay & hope to be back again soon!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

We (family of five) stayed four nights and enjoyed the cottage. The owners are friendly and helpful. The cottage is well maintained (clean) and kept in good shape. The master bed was very comfortable. The biggest plus for us was the access to the semi-private beach (about a 5 minute walk, roughly 10 houses down the road). The neighborhood is very nice and the location is a 3 minute drive to downtown Capitola. Note to Owner - you may want to fix the door to the bedroom with the single beds. It doesn't close properly which gave my kids an excuse to wander out after bedtime.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We had the best vacation ever in Santa Cruz. The property was in walking distance to the beach and restaurants. We traveled with kids, and everyone enjoyed their stay. The cottage is spacious and clean, the backyard is huge with mature tress and a beautiful garden. The owners made us feel completely at home. We are planning to return next year. Thank you for letting us stay in your cottage. My husband, teenage daughter, her friend and myself stayed at Madeline's Cottage for 5 nights. I was nervous renting a place online, but we certainly were not dissapointed. We loved our stay. It is a well stocked, clean, charming, comfortable place to stay. Very relaxing. Close to all the great sites in Santa Cruz. Short walk to the private beach or the Portola Wharf. Short drive to Boardwalk.. What I loved was it is not right in the midst of the crowded Beach area. After enjoying what the area has to offer, it was nice to come "home" and kick back in a quite, relaxing evironment, BBQ, cook in a fully stocked kitchen...very nice. The only drawback was the bathroom with is in the front bedroom, we (parents) had to walk into the girls room to get to the bathroom, but not a huge issue if your comfortable with your group. The owners are very gracious, wonderful people. We will go back again.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

My husband, daughter and I stayed at Madaline's cottage for five days during Thanksgiving week, and it was a wonderful experience. The cottage is comfy, quiet and nicely furnished, the owners are thoughtful and helpful, the setting in the garden is beautiful, and the location is fabulous! We had many wonderful walks along the beach cliffs, into Capitola, and also had an amazing hike in the redwoods at the nearby Nisine Marks State Park. It is also only a short drive to the heart of Santa Cruz and all of the excellent opportunities for shopping, dining and site seeing. We hope to come back for another stay very soon!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
