how lucky to mark New Year's eve with my family at Las Olas by the Sea
how lucky to mark New Year's eve with my family at Las Olas by the Sea
Last night I returned from Fort Lauderdale and this truly wonderful home - we were a group of 10 and had the house from 12/31/12 to 1/7/13 which included toasting New Year's eve by the candlelit pool. The house was recognizable when we arrived - the VRBO photos look exactly like the house. This will be a very personal review because our family included my two adult daughters, my sons-in- law and their collective 4 children (cousins aged 7, 5 1/2, 4 and 1 1/2) who normally live NJ and Oregon -- and a dear family friend. All the rooms in the house have great views (as advertised) and everyone was delighted to be there. We certainly had lots of room for plenty more people - even in the marble massive rain showers. The little kids had the BEST time finding where everything was and being together - everyone just loved hanging out by the pool, congregating by the kitchen island, putting out a birthday surprise in the formal dining room. Every hour in the house was delicious - before we even went somewhere. There were lots of 'moments' that represented just what I was hoping for when I rented the house! Being able to see my area relatives was an added bonus. It was surprisingly easy to go from the house to some great Florida destinations - South Beach in Miami Beach, Lauderdale by the Sea, Calle Ocho in Miami, the fabulous Flamingo Gardens in Davie (do get there - it's 60 acres of botanical gardens with dazzling flamingos that will eat out of your hand if you keep you hand still.) Close by the house was shopping for whatever we needed and the best 24 hour pizza place right on A1A (Primanti Brothers) - and a huge State park almost adjacent to the house that only one of us got to hike through (Hugh Taylor Birch State Park). It was outstanding having the beach and ocean right across the street - the views are stunning from all the rooms. My Florida cousins expressed the WOW factor best when they visited. And I"m still surprised that when you press the button, the light changes within seconds so you can cross the street to the ocean. I would recommend this property for any age combination of friends, family - it's a treasure. I had a local contact number for any house questions and got immediate response. We all agreed that the pool was a good surprise in being 4 feet - fine to swim laps, great for the children to play for hours and hours. It's very beautiful to see all the time.

Great place to stay :)
Great place to stay :)
The house was awesome in all sense of the word..awesome location...awesome pool...and awesome views... we travelled with a group of 10 high school students and 5 chaperones...the rooms were clean and beds were comfortable...the kitchen was perfect for our morning breakfasts before heading out on our daily adventures...and if the pool wasn't good enough, we had the ocean just across the street...shopping was just down the street...whether it was the mall or the various shops along Ft.Lauderdale beach.....the owners did very well with maintaining this property and worked well with me to meet my needs and with any questions that i had...

Very nice, but a lot you can't tell from photos
Very nice, but a lot you can't tell from photos
The house is beautiful, HOWEVER beware of what you can't see... this house is in VERY bad shape for what it is. Again, it's a very beautiful and luxurious mansion, right across the street from the beach, and even more grand and impressive than the photos show. BUT it seems as though the owners haven't maintained this house since the 80's. Paint inside was peeling horribly, stucco outside all chipped, etc. Many many aspects of the home did not work at all during our stay. For example, none of the fountains were actually operational, the pool has a water feature but it did not work, many lights and bulbs were out or just did not work, any of the bathroom luxury features were not operational, etc. At the end of the day, it was still a nice house and is a good price, but I'd probably look for a house that is somewhat maintained.

Manager response: This guest contradicts himself. In the title of the review he says "Very nice, but a lot you can't tell from photos." And later on he says "...even more grand and impressive than the photos show." So which one is it? I am confused. It's nice that this past guest point out that "it's a very beautiful and luxurious mansion, right across the street from the beach, and even more grand and impressive than the photos show." Prior to the guests arrival we experienced tremendous rains which exposed a roof leak. The result of this was evident by peeling paint and stucco. We did not have time to repair the damage before the guests checked in and we certainly were not going to inconvenience them by doing the work during their brief two day stay. It is probably my fault for not explaining the situation to the guests. As for the pool water feature, we disabled it (on the advice of our pool man) because the water level in the pool would become too low because of evaporation and the ocean breeze blowing the spraying water out of the pool. We also disconnected the fountain because past guests preferred not to hear the hum of the motor. These are hardly shortcomings of a stunning vacation home across from the beach. Had the fountains not been present than we would not be getting downgraded due to them not being in use. The light bulbs are checked before all guests arrive. From time to time guests have questions about turning on the lights because there are two sets of switches (on/off switches and dimmer switches) which are not always in the same location in each room. The guests claim that many light bulbs were out is not accurate. If he had brought the situation to my attention I would have explained to him how to operate the lights and if bulbs had burned out than I would have sent my handyman over to change them. The only luxury bathroom feature that was not operational is a towel warmer which is hardly necessary in south Florida. Lastly, I am glad that the guest mentioned that "it was still a nice house and is a good price" because now that we have completed he repairs it is back to being a 5 STAR PROPERTY.
What a beautiful house .... it was about 30 years ago. It's so sad to see how this house getting destroyed by the guest and managment doesn't do anything to mantaine this villa in great condition.Kitchen cabinets are so dirty as well as all dishes inside. we didn't want to use anyyhing before washing ourselves. All closets in the bedrooms were not clean at all. And Sauna is not working. I hope that someone will like this house and will buy it. Those kind of house can not be for RENT

Manager response: Let me begin by saying that 15 former guests have submitted reviews of this property and 14 gave the mansion 5 out of a possible 5 stars (highest rating) while one gave the mansion 4 stars. In fact, a former guest submitted a 5 star review just one week before this review was submitted and she said "The pictures do not do justice to how lovely this property is and how close to the beach you are". This is the first 3 star review that the mansion has ever received. This review was submitted out of spite because the guest wanted a free cleaning 3 days after she checked in (before the rest of her party arrived for Thanksgiving). She was told that there was going to be an additional charge for extra cleanings during her stay, but she refused to pay my cleaning crew. She claims that the sauna doesn't work, but I have used it myself. The kitchen cabinets were clean and so were the dishes. The only valid statement that she made was regarding closets being dirty. Two closets had some dust on the floor because were had just done routine air conditioning maintenance which required the technician to access the attic through openings in the ceiling in two closets. When he climbed up into the attic and back out some dust fell to the closet floor. My cleaning crew was not aware of the situation, but I sent them back to clean the closet floors just after the guests checked in. Wendi and I bend over backwards to meet the needs of our guests. If this guest had valid complaints than she should have voiced them during her stay so that we could have done our best to address and rectify them.

Wow! The pictures do not do justice to how lovely this property is and how close to the beach you are- just across A1A- maybe 45 seconds walk. We had a big company party plus our 2 kiddos, and I can say that we all found something we loved about the mansion. There is a beautiful pool that is deep enough to do laps, but shallow enough for our 5 year old to reach the bottom- perfect for learning to swim! The house itself is truly luxurious, with ample and comfy bedrooms up and downstairs, a huge kitchen with top of the line equipment, a massive living room with a bar area complete with sink and fridge. And the two main bathrooms are borderline obscene in their grandeur- with overhead 'showers' that hang from the high ceilings and jetted tubs that could host a family reunion. The beach is close, clean, and I had a blast snorkeling just off the shoreline. The water is akin to the Caribbean- clear blue and the perfect temperature. Tiny fish followed my toes around for as long as I was in the water. I miss my little friends :) I personally didn't leave the house except to go the beach all week- but our friends drove down to Miami for a night of dancing and bar hopping. Another guest chartered a fishing boat and came back with 3 large kingfish we grilled up for dinner. There are also plenty of grocers, bars and restaurants nearby if you'd like to hit the town. In all, we hosted over 20 people and everyone enjoyed themselves immensely. The owners were kind and welcoming and made us feel like that was our home for the week. Bret (owner) also showed me another property they were getting ready, just a few doors down A1A from the mansion. It will be a toss up between the two when we return next summer. It too was gorgeous- 3 stories I believe, with an elevator, a plush living room overlooking the ocean, balconies on every floor- and a pool, of course. It was the first vacation I've ever returned from and felt truly relaxed- even with a crew of epic proportions. Thank you Bret and Wendi for maintaining such a lovely getaway property and I hope we'll be back soon!

The mansion is in a perfect location - right across from the beach and next to a traffic light that makes it easy to cross the street. It is big and grand! Though it says that it "sleeps 22" there are only five bedrooms and none of them have attached bathrooms, thereby making it difficult for the elderly. The mansion was clean but not maintained as well as can be. Bret and Wendi Tuckman were nice to work with.

Manager response: I would like to point out that this is the first review of less than 5 out of 5 stars since we began renting out the property almost 5 years ago. We advertise the mansion as sleeping 20 (not 22). There are 10 beds (including 2 queen size sleeper sofas) so by sleeping two people per bed we are able to accommodate 20 people. The mansion has 5 bedrooms plus one convertible bedroom. We never claimed that the bathrooms are inside the bedrooms. We have rented to many groups with 20 people over the years and it seems to work better having bathrooms in between bedrooms (rather than inside) so that everyone can access a bathroom without having to go inside someones bedroom. I would like to note that the house has worked well for handicapped people so it certainly should work well for elderly. We have hosted 80th (and even 90th) birthday gatherings and we have never had anyone say that the house was not ideal for the elderly. There is a bedroom and bathroom on the main level so it is a perfect layout for elderly or handicapped people.
me, my brother and 15 other friends went down for a long weekend getaway and the place was stunning. there was plenty of space for 18 of us, the beach was utilized right across the street, as well as the pool. the pool was just a little cool, but not bad when the sun was beaming. the utility of the layout was used and pefect for a group to watch tv in one room, while others played cards in the dining area. the kitchen was super functional and abundantly used. overall, definitely the best vacation as far as value, location, quality of the house, and overall fun. we all had an absolute blast

Manager response: I just wanted to point out that we have a pool heater and we would have gladly increased the water temperature if the guest had told us that the pool was a bit cold.
We have rented the mansion for the past 4 years, it truly is a remarkable home directly located on the beach with its own private pool, and centrally located to all the activites in the Fort Lauderdale area. We have travelled as a group and the residence is very accomodating and spacious. Bret and Wendi Tuckman are truly a pleasure to deal with and have always been available for all our needs ... I would strongly recommend the mansion for your next paradise holiday.

Love this House!
Love this House!
Our group had a wonderful time in this place. Our celebration was indoors and outdoors. We enjoyed the spacious feeling of the house and pool area. It was really nice to be able to run across the street and take a swim in the ocean and to hear the waves and wind at night. This house is close to everything too! Bret and Wendi are easy to work with and make renting a stress-free experience. I highly recommend this house, you will be happy with your choice!
