Property description

"The Lake House" is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the scenic beauty of Lake Combie, a 360 acre semi-private reservoir with nine miles of shoreline, located in the Sierra Nevada foothills halfway between the historic towns of Auburn, Grass Valley, Nevada City.
The charming, 1800 sq. foot cottage with its four bedrooms, two bathrooms, living room with fireplace, dining room, breakfast bar, fully functional kitchen, laundry room, and large front deck can be your vacation retreat any time of the year. The home was remodeled in May 2015 and has an entirely new kitchen with new wallpaper, quartz countertops, multi colored tile glass back splash, cedar cabinets, all new appliances, double stainless steel sink and sit down four seat bar. There is also a breakfast nook table where two may eat. Both bathrooms have been remodeled and feature new tile, shower, sinks and tub with oiled bronze fixtures. The kitchen opens into a dining room which reveal massive picture windows overlooking the deck and lake. A handsome pine dining table seating six and buffet are found in the dining room and just beyond its French doors is a huge picnic table that can seat another 10/12 guests. The Great Room, featuring rare redwood paneling, is a comfortable place to relax. It has a large flat screen cable television, DVD and VHS player, as well as stereo C.D player. There is a collection of DVD's and VHS movies to view as well as books and magazines. There are two new micro fiber walnut colored queen hide a bed couches and matching rocker recliner in the Great Room which allows guests to sit before a stunning stone fireplace with rock found in nearby streams and rivers. The Great Room has five, huge picture windows that overlook the deck and lake creating the illusion that the home is actually on top of the water.
The Lake House features four bedrooms. The Master Bedroom has a queen size bed, leather bedside reading chair and reading lamp, end tables, a dresser and storage cabinet.. The room has its own completely remodeled bathroom with new oiled bronze fixtures and a cast iron bathtub surrounded by tile. Bedroom 2, The Guest Bedroom has two picture windows that overlook the lake, a double bed with side by side floor lamps, a dresser, and rocker. Guests can lie in bed and see the water. Bedroom 3, the "Fish Bedroom", also offers picture windows and views of the lake. Bedroom 3 has a single size trundle bed with a single trundle underneath, a dresser, and wooden chair. Bedroom 4 is the "Kids Bedroom" and can sleep four in its pine colored wooden bunk bed that has a double on the bottom level, a single on the top, and single trundle which can sleep one if it is pulled out from underneath the double bottom bunk. The room also features a wooden rocking chair, a dresser, and large picture window. The Combie Lake House is a one story home which fronts Lake Combie and offers stunning lake views from all its rooms. It has a large weather proof front deck featuring a cozy sitting area, a metal and slate coffee table that can transform into a portable fire pit perfect for roasting marshmallows, a large picnic table which can seat 10/12 as well as built in deck seating. For those with mobility issues, the deck is the perfect place to enjoy the lake. It require two steps to reach from the sidewalk and another half step to walk into the home. The deck is also surrounded by rails and has two metal gates. In the side yard, not far from the deck's all weather picnic table, is a large charcoal barbecue pit, and two more wooden picnic tables. The yard is flat and can be used for pitching a tent if children want the experience of sleeping outside, but not far from the house. Also in the yard, is the boat house which stores paddles, life jackets, and a few water toys. And Lake Combie is the perfect place for water activities! The home has its own concrete launch ramp and floating dock and offers free of charge the ability to not only launch your own boat in the summer, but use the Combie Lake House canoe, kayaks, and small fishing boat ( motor not included). For those without their own boat, you can simply use mine!
Combie Lake House is the perfect cottage - only steps from the water, newly remodeled, and fully self contained. It offers a one of a kind lakefront vacation in one of the prettiest areas you will ever see.
Each season creates its own unique opportunity to enjoy lakeside living, recreational activities, and area exploration in a region known for its outstanding natural beauty.
Come visit The Lake House and enjoy a one of a kind vacation as you create lasting, special memories. It is located only 1 hour from Sacramento and 2 hours from San Francisco and can be reached by freeway, highway and paved neighborhood roads. Because of its elevation of only 1600 feet, Combie Lake House is above the Sacramento Valley fog and below the winter Sierra snowline. There is no need to worry about snow shoveling or four wheel drive. What is perfect about its winter location is the fact that ski slopes are only an hour away on Interstate 80. The cottage is the perfect place to visit any time of the year.

Because The Lake House is located in the Bear River Wilderness area, there is much wildlife to view which includes all manner of birds, deer, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, and wild turkeys. Travel by small boat into Upper Lake Combie, or explore the Bear River to see a variety of water fowl. Sometimes an occasional river otter can be spotted. There is also a resident eagle who often perches on the top of a dead tree near the river's entrance. The beauty around Lake Combie is inspiring and provides a wonderful place to explore for the Nature enthusiast. Take a walk to Combie Dam or head in the other direction along the aqueduct road and have lunch at Dark Horse Golf Course. Check out some of the homes in Dark Horse which were once featured in Street of Dreams.

Lake Combie is a destination in itself, but if you would like to do some additional exploring, Nevada and Placer Counties have much to offer. Visit the charming historic Gold Rush Towns of Nevada City and Grass Valley, known for their Victorian architecture, quaint restaurants and shops, festivals, and cultural activities. Visit the Empire Mine and enjoy a living history tour of not only the mine, but the lovely summer home of Gold Magnate William Bourn. Visit Coloma State Park where gold was discovered which started the California Gold Rush of 1849. Go wine tasting in the surrounding area or have a picnic along the Yuba River after visiting the small, laid back community of Downieville. Hike in the nearby Sierras or try river rafting on the American River in Auburn or Coloma. Visit the State Capitol of California in Sacramento and tour the nationally famous Railroad Museum. You can even take a train ride along the river and then enjoy lunch in Old Town Sac. If you are visiting California for the first time and have a few extra days using the Lake House as your base, drive to the Napa Valley to tour its world famous wineries, or take the train from Sacramento to San Francisco for the day. The train will drop you off in Emeryville and then you can take the ferry across the water inlet to the "City by the Bay". Heading east, in the opposite direction, visit the scenic Sierras and beautiful Lake Tahoe. Have lunch on the north shore of the Lake and enjoy gaming at one of the Nevada clubs. Thirty minutes beyond Lake Tahoe is Reno, Nevada which offers a definite desert feel and has lots of gaming and entertainment. Many like to venture a bit further from Reno traveling along winding desert roads to visit the town of Virginia City, known for its Comstock Lode of silver and many saloons. Have a drink at the infamous "Bucket of Blood".

I could go on and on about all there is to see and do while enjoying your stay at the Lake House. Not only do you have the opportunity to enjoy lakeside living in truly lovely surroundings, but the whole environment surrounding Lake Combie offers a myriad of activities, all of your choosing. Reserve the Lake House for your next vacation and enjoy lakeside living at its best!

Owner info

Year Purchased: 1985

About the owner: I grew up in the South and as a child greatly enjoyed visiting our ' Camp' on the lake. Many of my happiest memories took place at the ' Camp' in rural Louisiana where I learned to water ski, canoe, and swim. When I came to California, it became my most fervent desire to find a lakeside retreat where similar memories could be created with my own children. I looked at so many different lakes throughout northern California when I was trying to find a lakeside retreat like the one I had the privilege of enjoying as a child. When I found the cottage on Lake Combie - I knew in an instant -I had found my " Camp". I have spent the past thirty years making memories with my family and had the joy of seeing my children grow up enjoying lakeside living. It is my sincere hope that you, too, have the opportunity to make memories with your family on a lake and in a cottage I so dearly love. The Lake House has always been my quiet retreat and I appreciate enjoying it in the off season, when days become brisk, the leaves turn beautiful colors, and I can explore the lake quite often without seeing anybody on the water. I like to put a fire in the fire place on chilly nights and then head to Nevada City for dinner before enjoying a play or independent film. I particularly appreciate taking my Golden Lab, Gunner, for boat rides while I look for birds, deer, and otter. I explore Combie all year long, because even in the winter, it rarely snows, and the lake is always accessible. When I am not at the lake, I appreciate being with my husband, children and grand children. I received a Bachelors in Sociology and minored in Cultural Anthropology in 1974. My passion is to travel to far away places where I can to study how others live. When at home, I am the volunteer coordinator of a local homeless shelter. Life is good!

Why the Owner Chose Lake Combie:
' The Lake House' is a one of a kind cottage that sits on a point overlooking Lake Combie. Thus various views of the water can be seen from all of the cottage rooms. Lake Combie is so close that friends can chat with one another while standing on the cottage deck and floating boat dock. Because of its semi private location, the Lake House offers one of the few spots in northern California for true lakeside living. Each morning a cooling mist rises from the Lake - and there is no nicer spot to sit out on the deck with a cup of coffee and watch the sunrise peek over the pine trees. When staying at Lake House you will have your own semi private lake just outside your front door and full usage of a canoe, four kayaks, and fishing boat free of charge! During the summer, you can even bring your own boat for recreation because the Lake House has its own private boat ramp, one of the few on the West side of Lake Combie.

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Lake Combie is a jewel of lake because it is semi private. What this means is that there is no public access and the only individuals allowed to use the lake are those who either own property on it, or allow guest usage. The Combie Lake House has its own boat launching ramp as well as floating dock. Guests can use my canoe, kayaks, or small fishing boat free of charge - or bring their own watercraft. Combie is a full recreational lake, but because there is no public usage, the lake is uniquely uncrowded. On weekdays, there may be no boats on the water and the only noise that can be heard is the sound of Canadian geese calling to one another. Lake Combie's 360 surface acres combine a watershed area fed by the Bear River. Besides the larger body of the lake, there is a second, upper lake which can only be explored by smaller boat. This particular area which runs parallel to the Bear River, is quiet, undisturbed, and the home of many smaller birds and waterfowl as well as fish, turtles, and frogs. Tom Sawyer land, at the entrance to the upper lake provides marshland and vegetation for many animals. Because Lake Combie offers hydro - electric power below its dam, water remains in the lake throughout the year except during mid September when the lake is dropped approximately ten feet so its water may be used for valley irrigation. Once the rains arrive, often as early as November, the lake will fill up once again remaining high until the following September. Water level has always been good and is at its highest in the early Spring. Combie remains high enough for boating activities until after Labor Day. Other larger lakes loose much of their water during seasons of drought and even when water levels are high, many people have to be contended with during boating. My cottage has its own floating dock which makes it so very easy to enjoy touring and water sports any time of the day without having to take your boat out of the water.
