Because The Lake House is located in the Bear River Wilderness area, there is much wildlife to view which includes all manner of birds, deer, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, and wild turkeys. Travel by small boat into Upper Lake Combie, or explore the Bear River to see a variety of water fowl. Sometimes an occasional river otter can be spotted. There is also a resident eagle who often perches on the top of a dead tree near the river's entrance. The beauty around Lake Combie is inspiring and provides a wonderful place to explore for the Nature enthusiast. Take a walk to Combie Dam or head in the other direction along the aqueduct road and have lunch at Dark Horse Golf Course. Check out some of the homes in Dark Horse which were once featured in Street of Dreams.
Lake Combie is a destination in itself, but if you would like to do some additional exploring, Nevada and Placer Counties have much to offer. Visit the charming historic Gold Rush Towns of Nevada City and Grass Valley, known for their Victorian architecture, quaint restaurants and shops, festivals, and cultural activities. Visit the Empire Mine and enjoy a living history tour of not only the mine, but the lovely summer home of Gold Magnate William Bourn. Visit Coloma State Park where gold was discovered which started the California Gold Rush of 1849. Go wine tasting in the surrounding area or have a picnic along the Yuba River after visiting the small, laid back community of Downieville. Hike in the nearby Sierras or try river rafting on the American River in Auburn or Coloma. Visit the State Capitol of California in Sacramento and tour the nationally famous Railroad Museum. You can even take a train ride along the river and then enjoy lunch in Old Town Sac. If you are visiting California for the first time and have a few extra days using the Lake House as your base, drive to the Napa Valley to tour its world famous wineries, or take the train from Sacramento to San Francisco for the day. The train will drop you off in Emeryville and then you can take the ferry across the water inlet to the "City by the Bay". Heading east, in the opposite direction, visit the scenic Sierras and beautiful Lake Tahoe. Have lunch on the north shore of the Lake and enjoy gaming at one of the Nevada clubs. Thirty minutes beyond Lake Tahoe is Reno, Nevada which offers a definite desert feel and has lots of gaming and entertainment. Many like to venture a bit further from Reno traveling along winding desert roads to visit the town of Virginia City, known for its Comstock Lode of silver and many saloons. Have a drink at the infamous "Bucket of Blood".

Year Purchased: 1985
About the owner: I grew up in the South and as a child greatly enjoyed visiting our ' Camp' on the lake. Many of my happiest memories took place at the ' Camp' in rural Louisiana where I learned to water ski, canoe, and swim. When I came to California, it became my most fervent desire to find a lakeside retreat where similar memories could be created with my own children. I looked at so many different lakes throughout northern California when I was trying to find a lakeside retreat like the one I had the privilege of enjoying as a child. When I found the cottage on Lake Combie - I knew in an instant -I had found my " Camp". I have spent the past thirty years making memories with my family and had the joy of seeing my children grow up enjoying lakeside living. It is my sincere hope that you, too, have the opportunity to make memories with your family on a lake and in a cottage I so dearly love. The Lake House has always been my quiet retreat and I appreciate enjoying it in the off season, when days become brisk, the leaves turn beautiful colors, and I can explore the lake quite often without seeing anybody on the water. I like to put a fire in the fire place on chilly nights and then head to Nevada City for dinner before enjoying a play or independent film. I particularly appreciate taking my Golden Lab, Gunner, for boat rides while I look for birds, deer, and otter. I explore Combie all year long, because even in the winter, it rarely snows, and the lake is always accessible. When I am not at the lake, I appreciate being with my husband, children and grand children. I received a Bachelors in Sociology and minored in Cultural Anthropology in 1974. My passion is to travel to far away places where I can to study how others live. When at home, I am the volunteer coordinator of a local homeless shelter. Life is good!
Why the Owner Chose Lake Combie:
' The Lake House' is a one of a kind cottage that sits on a point overlooking Lake Combie. Thus various views of the water can be seen from all of the cottage rooms. Lake Combie is so close that friends can chat with one another while standing on the cottage deck and floating boat dock. Because of its semi private location, the Lake House offers one of the few spots in northern California for true lakeside living. Each morning a cooling mist rises from the Lake - and there is no nicer spot to sit out on the deck with a cup of coffee and watch the sunrise peek over the pine trees. When staying at Lake House you will have your own semi private lake just outside your front door and full usage of a canoe, four kayaks, and fishing boat free of charge! During the summer, you can even bring your own boat for recreation because the Lake House has its own private boat ramp, one of the few on the West side of Lake Combie.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Lake Combie is a jewel of lake because it is semi private. What this means is that there is no public access and the only individuals allowed to use the lake are those who either own property on it, or allow guest usage. The Combie Lake House has its own boat launching ramp as well as floating dock. Guests can use my canoe, kayaks, or small fishing boat free of charge - or bring their own watercraft. Combie is a full recreational lake, but because there is no public usage, the lake is uniquely uncrowded. On weekdays, there may be no boats on the water and the only noise that can be heard is the sound of Canadian geese calling to one another. Lake Combie's 360 surface acres combine a watershed area fed by the Bear River. Besides the larger body of the lake, there is a second, upper lake which can only be explored by smaller boat. This particular area which runs parallel to the Bear River, is quiet, undisturbed, and the home of many smaller birds and waterfowl as well as fish, turtles, and frogs. Tom Sawyer land, at the entrance to the upper lake provides marshland and vegetation for many animals. Because Lake Combie offers hydro - electric power below its dam, water remains in the lake throughout the year except during mid September when the lake is dropped approximately ten feet so its water may be used for valley irrigation. Once the rains arrive, often as early as November, the lake will fill up once again remaining high until the following September. Water level has always been good and is at its highest in the early Spring. Combie remains high enough for boating activities until after Labor Day. Other larger lakes loose much of their water during seasons of drought and even when water levels are high, many people have to be contended with during boating. My cottage has its own floating dock which makes it so very easy to enjoy touring and water sports any time of the day without having to take your boat out of the water.
