Wonderful Experience

Guest: Keri (Maui & Molokai, Hawaii)
Date of Stay: 05/10/12 Review Submitted: 05/14/12

Our family loved staying at Hakalau Haven! Our entire family could stay together at the same place, yet had our privacy. It definately beat staying at a hotel. Star was wonderful and made sure that we had everything we needed. Mahalo!

Owner response:Mahalo! I am very happy that you enjoyed Hakalau Haven. I make it my goal to insure that our guest have an enjoyable vacation. Hope to see you again. Mahalo & Aloha, Starr

Hakalau Haven, was beautiful and very spacious. Starr is a wonderful person she is there to great you, and give you the tour of the house. Our vacation was wonderful, we stayed to attend the Merrie Monarch and to watch my daughter perform for the Miss Aloha Hula Competition, and in the groups division. I was so happy that the group placed fourth in the Auana program. My family loved this house, it was like a home away from home, lots of space, the house is very equipped with all the untensils from the kitchen to the bathroom, bedrooms etc. I plan on staying home next year and hopefully my Halau will have a chance to book this property. They will love it. Starr again thank you for a wonderful experience at Hakalau Haven, and I am glad I got to meet you. Mahalo Patsy

Owner response:Mahalo Patsy and Ohana, It was really nice meeting you and your ohana, I felt like your ohana was like family to me. Mahalo for your gift, I will cherish it for along time. Please keep us in mind if you come to the Big Island again. Aloha, Starr

Can't wait to go back!

Guest: Dan and Holly Ann (Portland, Oregon)
Date of Stay: 01/16/12 Review Submitted: 02/06/12

If you are looking for a quiet, comfortable, BEAUTIFUL place to stay that is far from the maddening crowds yet close to civilization, this is the place to go. I'm tempted not to say too many good things about Hakalau because I'd like to keep its gorgeous beauty all to myself, but that would be selfish... We stayed in the smaller 1 bedroom unit that is detached from the main house and it was perfect for our needs. We loved being able to wake up and watch the whales from our own private lanai before strolling down to the secluded beach park that was a mere 10 minute walk away. Starr, the property manager, is truly a wonderful person and she made sure that all of our needs were met. Thank you for pampering us, Starr! We will DEFINITELY be back.

We Were Spoiled at Hakalau Haven

Guest: Four Adults from Texas (Dallas, Texas )
Date of Stay: 07/19/11 Review Submitted: 08/11/11

We fell in love with Hakalau Haven, the Big Island and definitely hope to return one day. After staying there a week, it is funny to look at the photo of the house above because the lush front garden has grown so much since that photo was taken that it seems like a different house. We loved so much about our experience at this house from Starr to the house layout, from the operating windows and screens to watching the sunrise from the lanai, the view of the stars at night, and the easy walk to incredible Hakalau Park. This was our 1st VRBO experience and they would be proud. We were so spoiled that the next house we stayed at on Oahu was hard to adjust to after being at Hakalau Haven. Thank you Starr for everything - Hakalua Haven is a slice of Heaven.

We had a wonderful stay at Hakalau Haven last weekend. The accommodations that were provided were just what we were looking for and perfect. My son's soccer team played in a tournament in Hilo and myself and another parent were looking for a house that would provide a safe but yet clean and comfortable environment to house the several boys that we had to take care of. The house was perfect, we were able to rest, cook and entertain the boys in a great atmoshere. Starr our contact and go to person was wonderful and a great source of information, very obliging and always willing to help!!! I would definitely recommend this property to friends and family and we would like to return one day and we look forward to visting soon...

The house was simply amazing, it even had a waffle maker! Every morning I got up early to watch the sunrise from the balcony, while wifey slept! The house location was perfect to go to all the tourist stuff, and I do recommend going to the observatory on Mt Keck... We have a list of things we want to do, staying at this house is #1 on the list.

Home away from home!

Guest: marspo (Spokane, Washington)
Date of Stay: 06/14/11 Review Submitted: 06/16/11

The best part of staying at Hakalau Haven starts with Starr. She is so good at making herself available to help with every aspect from the reservation and to accommodating my odd check in needs. I love the property as it provides all that I need and I can share the home with others and I hardly know they are there. The master suite is like its own apartment and is my home away from home. The apartment adds even more space when we really have a full crew. I have visited here at least 5 times now and have enjoyed each stay. The view is wonderful. I enjoy getting up in the morning, getting coffee, going upstairs and walking on the deck to watch sunrise. The fact that this house is so close to World Botanical Gardens and Zip Isle Zip Line just makes it a great place for an excellent stay!

Owner response:Mahalo! It's always a pleasure having you as our guest. Aloha, Starr

Met our needs!

Date of Stay: 06/09/11 Review Submitted: 09/29/11

Hakalau Haven was perfect for our 'Forever Friends' huaka'i to the Big Island. We have known each other since elementary school and are at a time in our lives when everything is precious. We decided to experience Waipi'o valley and needed a home base for 9 diverse adults & 3 young 'uns(ages 9-14) From our first conversation with Starr I knew we hit the jackpot. Hakalau Haven accomodated us very comfortably. Loved the great room where we gathered for 'ohana time, the lanai as we kept the cook company as he BBQ-ed and the ability to have some solitude if that is what someone needed. There were enough bathrooms so no one was waiting and we made good use of the washer & dryer on our return from Waipi'o. The hale was spacious & bright. It is perfect for groups of people. We would return. It's great for a family gathering. I highly recommend Hakalau Haven. Mahalo nui, Starr! Malama kakou~

Although we only stayed 3 days, Hakalau Haven was perfect for our little getaway. My family and I are from O'ahu and needed a place to stay while attending my niece's graduation in Honoka'a. Since Hakalau is between Hilo & Honoka'a, I started communication with Starr. Starr is the sweetest wahine & whatever you need, she is there to accommodate you. Starr made our little vacation PERFECT! Hakalau Haven is very comfortable & the view is breathtaking. Perfect location, perfect house, & perfect host! Mahalo nui loa Starr!!! I'm hoping to come back soon...

Incredible Experience-True Aloha Vibe!!

Guest: Kelli (Lake Tahoe, CA)
Date of Stay: 04/19/11 Review Submitted: 05/23/11

Hakalau Haven is truly more then the description depicts!! From the lush vines swaying from the trees, 6 foot tall birds of paradise, wild pineapples, ocean vistas, and Koki frogs that melodically sing you to sleep, this retreat is a definate haven. Estelle the caretaker greeted us with a spirit of Aloha that sets the rest of the stay into motion. She genuinely is vested in your stay being special, and top notch. The house is IMMACULATE! Everything you could need and more is available to you. These owners care about your experience. Neighbors are wonderful people, and the setting is amazing. Privacy while still being close to the highway for traveling. The bay nearby is breathtaking and Hakalau is one of the most lush spots on this island while not being to "remote". All of us that stayed here felt like Estelle was our new long lost friend we had known forever. If we needed something, or wanted advice on local hot spots she was just a phone call away!! The studio is actually a large one bedroom apartment that could easily sleep 4. The house is beautifully decorated with everything one could need including a piano, all the bedrooms are enormous and the furnishings are not someones yard sale finds. Quality all the way!! If you are considering staying on this side of the island consider it a blessing if you can rent Hakalau Haven. You will not be sorry, and I guarantee you will leave your vacation feeling refreshed and inspired. Thank you Estelle for the amazing experience, we can't wait to come back!! (Plus this is only 20 min from Hilo) and walking distance to the coolest bay for miles around:) Do yourself a favor, look no further VRBO has one HOT SPOT and this is it. Best kept secret on the island.

Owner response:Mahalo Kelli, I look forward to seeing you and your family again. Aloha, Starr

Wonderful Location

Guest: Bernie (Houston)
Date of Stay: 07/17/10 Review Submitted: 07/07/11

We can't express enough what a great time we had in Hilo and what a Wonderful place Hakalau Haven was for our family. Starr, the property manager was very helpful and accomodating, both with island information and making our stay a comfortable one. The property is very clean and very spacious. Just outside of Hilo, Hakalau Haven is very close to Waipio Valley (a must see) and Rainbow Falls. The home itself is a short walk (maybe a mile) or drive down to the ocean in a breathtaking rainforest area. If you plan on a stay in Hilo you won't be disappointed with your stay at Hakalau Haven!

Owner response:Aloha Bernie, It makes me happy when the guest enjoy themselves and also the house. I want the guest to be comfortable and hopefully when you visit the big island again, you will return to Hakalau Haven. A home away from home. Mahalo & Aloha, Starr

My son and I stayed at this wonderful haven in June, 2010, and can't wait to go back for another stay. It is more beautiful than the pictures show. It is very clean and well appointed with all the necessities you would need. The manager, Starr, is top notch! She was very informative and so nice! She made sure everything was perfect and she can tell you where are the best local food hang outs are! Hakalau Haven is on a quiet road with very easy access to the highway so you can easily drive into Hilo or the other direction to go to Kona. This side of the island is so lush and green with beautiful flowers everywhere - a real tropical paradise! Thanks, Starr! We will be back soon!!

Owner response:Mahalo Melanie, I am glad that you and your son Mike enjoyed your stay. I look forward to seeing you again.

It was fabulous...we enjoyed our stay very much and hope to stay there again! This house is perfect for any family getaway or just a quick getaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. I totally recommend a stay at Hakalau Haven!

The Spirit of Aloha

Guest: The Idaho Group (Lewiston, Idaho)
Date of Stay: 02/16/10 Review Submitted: 07/29/10

Three couples travelled to Hilo in February 2010 and spent a week at Hakalau Haven. A beautiful home, well furnished with large rooms. The bedroom accomodations were well placed for privacy. The common areas-- kitchen/dining/living great room, upstairs TV room, and second floor lanai were easily spacious enough to handle our group with room for more. This location, though near the highway, seems secluded and off the beaten path. A nice hike (or easy drive) to the beach park at the end of the road (about a mile). The beach was easy access, yet secluded. We look forward to another visit soon.
