Owner response:Gracias. Nos vemos el año que entra.

Stayed in many places in Mexico, but this one tops the list for many reasons. Clean & comfortable layout with a well-equipped little kitchen, & a perfect location far enough above & away from the centro for a sense of peace and spaciousness, with terrific views of the mountains and sunsets. Well managed by gracious & responsive owners who set the tone of easy-going hospitality mixed with attention to detail. Their plant collection is fabulous, and they arranged Spanish lessons for me in town which were most enjoyable. Guanajuato is a gem - with morning descents into town down winding paths thru inviting plazas, the exuberant color palette, the charm of the people - all made the entire stay a truly enchanting experience.

Owner response:It was a pleasure to have you with us. Looking forward to see you next year. Thank you

Guanajuato - best kept secret in Mexico

Guest: Daria D.
Date of Stay: 02/13/12 Review Submitted: 03/31/12

Others have raved about the apartments here, so I don't need to (everyone is correct - they are fabulous). It's the city that needs to receive the praise. It is a beautiful city filled with kind, welcoming people. Guanajuato is like a little island of peace. The University is full of energetic young people. The museums (and there are many) are all interesting. But it's the music in Guanajuato that is so special. The symphony plays every week for the princely sum of 80 pesos. And they are very good indeed. Jardin Union has free brass band concerts 3 times/week and is the best people-watching place in the world. Also it abounds with mariachi bands for more free music. We were so taken with the city and its kind people. The best thing is that there are few non-Mexicans here so you can get the flavour of the real Mexico. There are many good restaurants and interesting shopping as well. Thank you Gerardo and Imogene for your warm hospitality. Hope Freda and Shadow are getting along. Say hello to the hummingbirds in the garden. We miss them already.

Perfection

Guest: solo traveler (Fenton, Michigan USA)
Date of Stay: 02/04/12 Review Submitted: 03/17/12

The glowing accolades are richly deserved. The pictures don't do this location justice. Not only are the sunsets stunning, but the well tended plants and garden provide a wonderful place to relax and meet other tenants. The atmosphere is friendly, but if you wish to remain private you can do so. The apartment is spacious, clean, and well-supplied for anyone's needs. Each apartment has a balcony with a view. I have rented houses and apartments on VRBO in Mexico and Central America in the past for considerably more money with far less value. It was also much quieter than anywhere I've rented yet it is truly a 10 minute walk to the city center. As others have said, Gerardo and Imogene are great owners who will make sure your needs are met. One afternoon the communal washing machine wasn't working due to a workman inadvertently turning off the water line. Rather than ask me to wait until Gerardo came home, Imogene invited me into their residence to use their private machine. I also had the privilege of attending Gerardo's Spanish classes which are taught by an excellent teacher. (Note: I'm a picky retired teacher myself) The class was two hours, taught within clear grammatical structures but so much fun that I actually looked forward to going to class each day. You simply can't go wrong renting here.

Owner response:We appreciate you as much you appreciate us and our place.

Mision del Sol...Definitely a Place to Visit Again!

Guest: Nancy Seeley (Zihuatanejo, GRO Mexico)
Date of Stay: 09/05/11 Review Submitted: 09/14/11

Having read every one of the other extremely positive Mision del Sol reviews, it seems all the ways in which this VRBO property excels have been quite thoroughly covered. My husband and I came here for a week and extended our stay twice because we couldn't bear to leave. My only concern in fully extolling the virtues of this charming place is that there won't be a spot available for us on our next visit!! Although there are 6 apartments in the complex, Gerardo appears to have a full house much of the time -- and rightly so. There's no false advertising here: what you see and what's promised on the website is exactly what you get. An added bonus for us was the other tenants. Shared Happy Hours and chance encounters on the premises made for even more ideas on things to do in the Guanajuato area. There's simply no downside here. It's an enchanting spot from which to launch your exploration of this part of Mexico. One more thing: We're both avid walkers and have travelled extensively throughout much of the country, and we can't think of another spot offering more possibilities for keeping aerobically fit than this one. Mil gracias for a totally memorable trip!!!

Owner response:Thanks a lot for your comments. I hope to see you soon.

Gerardo and Imogene have created an amazing piece of paradise in Guanajuato. The rentals are spacious, clean and well equipped. It's a 10 minute walk down into town and either that back up or a sub $3 cab ride. There are several stores nearby for supplies and larger ones in town and the market @ Embajadoras plaza. Can't think of a better place to stay in GTO!

Awesome apartment, awesome owners, & an awesome price!

Guest: Nanci (Sunny CA)
Date of Stay: 07/01/11 Review Submitted: 10/04/11

When we were about to start our journey, I was a bit apprehensive about renting a place, sight unseen, on the internet.I shouldn't have worried! The owners, Gerardo and Imogene, took care of our every need, whether it be directions for the grocery store or where to find a good cigar as a gift. The apartment was neat, clean, and well-maintained. The grounds were beautiful, as well. What was really important was the gated parking lot. We took Spanish classes for two months and had to walk down the hill every day.Taxi rides up the hill are cheap ($3) and bus rides are even cheaper ($.50 cents). There's an old saying that people make the place, and it couldn't be truer at Mision del Sol. I thoroughly enjoyed our impromptu Happy Hours, where guests would sit around the patio, discussing things they've done or seen and talk about where they've been or where they're going to, all the while watching the sun set behind Cristo Rey. I thoroughly recommend staying at this apartment. When you go to Mision del Sol, enjoy the apartment, enjoy the awesome views, and make sure you give my new best friend, Freda, a good scratch behind the ears (she'll be your best friend, too)!

Owner response:Thank you very much for your comments, it was a pleasure to have you at Mision del Sol.

I stayed at this property for 7 weeks. Everything was excellent. Gerardo and Imogen have done a terrific job with Mision del Sol. The location was perfect for me. It has privacy , views and security. I also enjoyed the workout of walking up from the city centre. While there I attended their small language school for 2 hours a day , Monday to Friday , for 6 weeks and thoroughly enjoyed it. The teacher was great. Guanajuato itself is probably the most visually stunning city I have ever seen. A perfect place to explore with my new digital SLR camera. The people who live there were wonderful. Friendly , helpful and polite. In fact , I can honestly say that in every place I went to in my 3 months there ( Ajijic , Mazamitla , Tapalpa , Tequila , Patzcuaro , Santa Clara del Cobre and many other small towns ) the people were all like that. I have always said that the people of Thailand were the nicest I've come across. Well , they have gone to number two now. Thanks to everyone I met for a an unforgettable trip. John

My husband and I stayed at Mision del Sol for the month of April and it was the perfect choice for us. The owner, Gerardo, saw to our every need. The apartment was clean, modern and very nicely furnished. With the two ceiling fans that is all the air conditioning you want or need. The walk down is about 10-15 minutes and the walk up for us was by taxi ($3-$4 USD) The thing we enjoyed most about Guanajuato was the low cost cultural and musical events. We went to the symphony twice and sat in the 2nd row for $3. dollars each. We also went to very low cost chamber music presentation, piano recital and of course the wonderful Folklorico at the beautiful Theatro Juarez. We will be returning to Guanajuato and Mision del Sol, both are gems.

My husband and I spent ten days at Mision del Sol in Jan/Feb 2011 and thoroughly enjoyed it. The photos do not convey the lovely and cozy simplicity of the apartments nor the tranquilness of the location. Muy acogedora: comfortable king-size bed, hot water and drinking water supplied, internet access and laundry facilities. Gerardo was an attentive host, thoughtful and friendly. We loved the twice daily walks up and down the very steep Temiscuitate Callejon to the center of the city. The apartment kitchen makes it easy to feel right at home, and we enjoyed both morning coffee and evening cervezas on the balcony. Mision del Sol's gated courtyard and potted cactus were a visual treat in a city with very little greenery. Amazing sunset views. Highly recommended!

Owner response:It was a pleasure to host you, I`ll hope to see you soon. Thank you Gerardo

Just what we were hoping for

We stayed for five weeks while we studied Spanish in Guanajuato. We enjoyed the apartment, the well-tended cactus/succulents garden, and the town very much. I especially liked the wonderful light that poured into the apartment from mid-morning until late afternoon. The rooms were always cheerful, full of light, and a comfortable temperature even when it was cold outside. And, as others have written, the view of the town and of the evening sky is stunning. Gerardo was an attentive host -- available and on hand when we had a question, but never intrusive. He was responsive to our questions about how things worked in the apartment and was very knowledgeable about the local area, whether our questions were about restaurants, hiking, cultural events, shopping, or transportation. Everything in our apartment worked well (for example- wi-fi, TV, on-demand water heater, and appliances). The important kitchen supplies and equipment were on hand and ready to use when we arrived. Our unit and the whole apartment complex were extremely clean and well maintained throughout our stay. Gerardo and his staff have paid a lot of attention to those details that make guests feel most comfortable, safe, and welcome. Three small neighborhood stores for grocery shopping are nearby. Historic parts of Guanajuato (including museums, theaters, and the university) are a short bus or taxi ride away, or a ten minute walk down hill. We had such a good time that we are already mapping out the dates we'd like to return next year.

Owner response:It was a pleasure to have you with us. We will be waiting for you next year.

My wife and I spent two peaceful weeks resting and exploring Guanajuato. The apartment was comfortable and with an amaizing view of the sunset. The location is great just above town, a short walk away where you can enjoy everything: cafes, galeries, museums, etc. We strongly recommended this place for the season traveller, Gerardo and his team are extremely helfpul and make yourself feel at home. :- )

It's All True

My mother always said if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. But in this case, she would be wrong. We stayed for the month of November 2011; the apartment is just as portrayed in the photos and deserves every good comment you see here. Before arrival, our e-mails were answered promptly and clearly; upon arrival we were greeted warmly. The owners, Gerardo and Imogene, live on the property, are available when needed, but never intrusive. The six apartments are well planned for privacy; you will not have anyone facing your windows or even passing by your entrance. We’ve visited Guanajuato several times and have never felt concerned about safety. However, you may like to know the property is gated, very secure. And all is spotlessly clean. We purposely chose the upper part of the city for the hill exercise (to offset so many good bakeries and restaurants in Guanajuato!), but taxis and buses are inexpensive and plentiful if you prefer. Don’t be daunted by mention of the hill, just go at your own pace and enjoy the colours, sights and sounds along the way. (BTW, we are both over 65 and looked forward to this daily). While we love the bustle of the centro, it was nice to return to our quiet “home” and enjoy city views and sunsets from the balcony. One caution: the owners’ lovable dog Freda could steal your heart. The same could be said for quirky Guanajuato City with its history, music, art, colour and friendly people. We’ve travelled through many parts of Mexico and this remains our favourite Mexican destination.

Peaceful Abode

Date of Stay: 06/17/10 Review Submitted: 08/02/10

I couldn't be happier with my apartment at Mision del Sol. I stayed for 6 weeks and it was just what I needed. If it weren't for the colorful tile and authentic Mexican fixtures used to decorate the place, one might forget he/she were in Mexico, because the place has all the amenities one is used to in the States - fridge, coffee maker, microwave, fully equipped kitchen, beautifully tiled bathroom with hot water all the time, ceiling fans, even a friendly dog who sleeps on the doorstep and runs up eagerly to greet you when you return from an outing. It is about a 15 minute walk to the city and the walk back is a great work out (taxis are only about 3 dollars if you're not in the mood). The distance is perfect, because you have fast access to everything in the center, but you aren't affected by the noisy hustle and bustle. Gerardo, the owner is very personable and is around daily to chat with you and to make sure you have everything you need. Luz, the cleaning lady comes in once a week to do a general cleaning, but, if she notices you need more she'll come more often to wash your dishes or even have a pot of rice waiting for you when you get home. The view is fabulous as is the patio, which has hundreds of beautiful cacti and other plants. I can't see how anyone would not love this place.

Owner response:We hope to see you back soon Thanks

This is our first time to Guanajuato. We searched online for a place to stay and found Mision del Sol. We rented an apartment for slightly more than a week. We arrived late (nearly mid-night) and Gerardo and Sonia (the owners) have been very helpful to accommodate our late arrival and gave us directions driving from the airport to Mision del Sol. The place looks exactly like the pics shown on the site. It was very cozy, homey and we felt very safe too. Thanks to the owners helping us to navigate the city driving with our car. The view from the balcony/living room and bedroom was spectacular! Really great view! At night it's like thousand stars shining at you (the lights from the houses of another end). The workers (gardener and cleaner) were very nice and friendly! The kitchen has everything, including blender, toaster, coffee maker. It's easy enough to walk to downtown once you know which way to go. Walking up may be tough, better take a cab which requires around 30 pesos. Driving is not necessary in this town, but nice to have it if you would like to drive to San Miguel de Allende and Dolores Hidalgo which is about an hour drive. We have no hesitation to recommend this place to my friends in Asia. If possible, we would love to come back again and stay in this beautiful apartment (Mision del Sol).

Mision del Sol is the perfect place to stay

Guest: JRNyack (Nyack, NY)
Date of Stay: 04/02/10 Review Submitted: 05/13/10

We rented an apartment at Mision del Sol for the month of April 2010 and it was wonderful. The apartment was spotlessly clean, tastefully and comfortably decorated, and well-situated in respect to the historic center of Guanajuato. The view from the apartment is spectacular. It has all the electronic amenities -- internet for your laptop and cable TV. Gerardo was the perfect host: always available when we wanted to ask him something, always helpful. Senora Luz was equally kind and helpful. We are both 68 years old. We walked down Calle Temezcuitate to the center of the old town in 10 to 15 minutes. The steep walk back up took longer, but there is so much to see and talk about that we enjoyed taking our time. Because there is always so much going on in town, it was an added benefit to be that 15 minutes away from the action. Our apartment had a complete kitchen, and we enjoyed cooking meals and eating them on the balcony, often watching the sunset over the town. As an aside, we have traveled a lot, but have never experienced such consistently perfect weather. There are several small food stores within a couple of blocks of the apartment, larger ones in the old town, and a "Mega" supermarket 10 minutes by cab or longer by local bus. Guanajuato itself is an unending feast for the traveler. Its history is central to the history of Mexico. Its parks and plazas are beautiful and are great for people watching. Its colonial architecture is remarkable. Its museums are outstanding. Take the funicular cable car up to the Pipila monument at sunset to see the city spread out below you. Guanajuato's restaurants, all within walking distance, are diverse, serving abundant portions of food in wonderful variety. For example, Bossa Nova situated under shade trees on the edge of Plaza de San Fernando is a Mexican restaurant named for a Brazilian music form that serves French crepes. We especially enjoyed walking to the weekend market at Jardin Embajadores, the Diego Rivera home/museum, the University of Guanajuato symphony performance at Teatro Municipal, and several free concerts featuring everything from flamenco to soft rock at the Plaza de la Cultura near the Cervantes Museum, or just hanging out at Jardin de la Union, watching the world go by. And, after all of these pleasures, it was the ultimate pleasure to walk back up the hill and come back to our beautiful apartment. It was a great month. Thank you Gerardo.

I just returned from a two month stay in Guanajuato at Misión del Sol and can confirm that the apartments are just what you would expect from all the other comments posted here. They are comfortable, well-maintained, and have great views. I really liked the location; it was close enough to walk to the city center but you avoid all of the noise. Gerardo was friendly and helpful and Sra. Luz did an excellent job maintaing the apartments. This was my first time arranging a rental online and I had my doubts, but Misión del Sol really is as nice as everyone on here has said.

The place was great! The owner was fabulous gave us lots of tips about town, helped us with our luggage which didn't arrive with us on the plane. The way to down was down hill maybe about 5-10 min long depending on how fast you'd go. The way back home was up hill, but being in Mexico and on vacation we would just stroll up the hill slowly at our own pace and just chat. By the way, my wife was about 4 months pregnant and loved the walking in the center of town, and to and from the center. Taxis are cheap too if too tired to walk! The apartment had everything you needed. Internet, cable, a 5 gallon jug of bottled water. A/C is not needed in this region of Mexico so ceiling fan were available but we didn't use them. Great restaurant when you got to town. Our favorite was "Truco 7".

We stayed here for the first week of February. Very clean apartments, great bed and great views from every apartment. Gerardo was extremely helpful with any request and made us feel at home. Quiet, relaxing and the most beautiful city we've ever seen. Our GPS was as confused as us with driving in the city. Maybe some instructions to the condo which don't use tunnels would be helpful for first timers driving here.

Owner response:It was a pleasure to have you at Mision del Sol. I would like to mention that getting to the apartments without using the tunnels would be more complicated. Thank you for your preference. Gerardo Araujo

We stayed at the Mision del Sol for the month of January 2009 and enjoyed it thoroughly. The apartment was clean, modern, and well equipped, and is in a location that ensures quiet and yet is an easy downhill walk into the center of this beautiful city. The walk back up is more daunting for old folks like us, but taxies are plentiful and cheap ($3) so we usually took a cab back to the apartment. Our hosts, Sonia and Gerardo, are pleasant and helpful, and along with the maid Sra. Luz, and the dog, Frida, made our stay very enjoyable.

We share all of the positive remarks from previous guests. If we say too many more positive statements, I'm afraid we won't be able to have our apartment again next time. Seriously, it was a great experience living there in a wonderful town with very nice and respectful citizens. Being in shape, I looked forward to the uphill walking every day. Believe it or not, now that I am back in the gym, I'm doing things I couldn't do before. It was pretty close to a perfect four week vacation, much of it do to Mission del Sol. Thank you and God Bless Guanajuato and the people who live there. Dave and Brookie Stein

We lived four months in the city of Guanajuato at Mission del Sol apartment complex. It was very exciting and interesting. Our apartment was located fifteen minutes walk from the historic center. Everything was very close to our apartment such as Los Pozuelos shopping mall, 10 minutes by car through tunnels where MM cinema theatres and MEGA supermarket were located. Most of the restaurants are located in the city center. Jardin de La Union (the city main plaza) is surrounded by several restaurants, has a beautiful garden, a water fountain in the middle, and mariachi bands play every night. Our apartment was completely furnished, a woman named Luz cleaned it every week and a man named Jose washed our car for a fee. Mission del Sol had everything we needed: great neighbors like Andrea & Michael (a retired couple from Florida), great service from Luz & Jose, a loving pet- dog named Frida, washer, dryer, internet, a great view of the city, and a GREAT host like Gerardo (the owner).

I stayed in Mision del Sol for about 3 months in the Summer of 2008. The apartments are not only beautiful but so well maintained. I don't think that the pictures on the internet even touch on the beauty and serenity of these apartments. They are located away from the city noise and let you really appreciate the unique city of Guanajuato, Mexico. Sonia and Gerardo are probably the most kind and generous people in this city. Many people in the city know them and say that I lucked out finding these apartments and more over Sonia and Gerardo because they are some of the most honest people that live in Guanajuato. I highly recommend these apartments to anyone...the experience of staying at Mision del Sol will take your trip to Guanajuato to the next level. If I ever get the opportunity to come back to Guanajuato, I will definitly stay here again. You will not be disappointed if you choose these apartments as your resting place while in Mexico!

We spent 2 months here during the summer of 2008. Sonia and Gerardo and Dona Luz were excellent and thoughtful hosts. They catered to everything we needed while at the same time giving us our privacy. The apartment was very comfortable and the wifi worked flawlessly (important for us because we needed to get some work done). We certainly hope to be able to stay again in the future. Thanks for everything, Doug and Andrea

Owner response:Thank you, it was a pleasure for all to have you with us. Gerardo

It is the wonderful & beautiful fully equipped apartment where I could stay calmly and comfortably. The surroundings, the amenities in the room, the security system, the view from the apartment are perfectly suitable for the vacation. And 10 minnutes walk on "el callejon del Temezcuitate", to and from the town center is really a pleasure (beautiful and good exerceise!). I would like to visit Guanajuato definitely again, staying at this apartment. Thank you!!

Owner response:thank you very much, we hope to have you back again.

Just spent a month at these beautiful apts. Security is extraordinary. They are very clean and well furnished for a comfortable stay. The area is quiet, tranquil and has outstanding views of the city. The dog mentioned in another comment is no longer with the owners. The other was a pleasant pet to have around. We would stay here again. Nelson and Jerrie Kenner

This quiet, comfortable apartment in the gorgeous city of Guanajuato was perfect for my needs at the time, offering reliable wireless internet & a desk from which to work as well. The staff that includes a wonderfully efficient woman who keeps the place spotless as well as discrete & worldly owners add to the experience of living in this stylish yet very Mexican environment. The view of the city & the surrounding mountains keeps your spirits lifted, while the altitude keeps the heat of a summer´s day at bay. It was a memorable stay. Many thanks.P.S. The presence of 2 affectionate dogs, 1 cat & many many potplants also added to a sense of homeliness that made for a particularly soothing environment. Gracias.

These apartments are absolutely gorgeous. Ideally located close enough to the center where it is accessible, but far enough away to not suffer from the noise. Reliable Wi-fi, a wonderful cleaning lady, laundry room and nice landlords. I have already booked my return stay, as well. My only complaint: one of the dogs functions as an alarm clock. Seriously, EVERY morning at 7am she starts to bark, incessantly for an hour. Sometimes she stops barking, but starts up again just as you start going back to sleep. One morning, she actually started barking at 5:30am!!!! I have lived in Mexico for 5 years, so I have learned to tolerate noise, HOWEVER, if I am paying for a 4 star apartment (which these are) I prefer not to have a dog barking under my window. Hopefully, Gerardo will figure out something to do with Mischa by the time I return =) Gracias por todo!!!!!

Owner response:Thank you for honest comment. I have already taken care of the dog problem. See you in Setptember. Gerardo Araujo

Beautiful apartment in lovely Guanajuato. The landlords are the best and the apartment suits us perfectly! It is great that we can walk into town in such a short time - so we do it every day. We love it here and have already booked again for our next trip!!!!! Andrea & Michael
