Mellow Yellow is our mountain home. Although we are still learning her history, we believe she was built in the late 1800's and was at one time on the old stage coach road.

Now, set way back and offering complete privacy, the house was completely renovated in the late 1990's and is as comfortable as a modern home, while still featuring the famous 'wormy chestnut walls'.
We have our own youngsters, and whenever we go up there, we just open the doors and let them roam...no security issues here! Sit on the large country porch and enjoy the long range view, or sit at the authentic German Beer garden table with a candle and sip some wine.

Set into over ten acres and surrounded by meadows and woods, you will find that leaving is hard to do! West Jefferson is nearby and has everything you need and more from grocery stores to Galleries; fine food to fast food; Walmart to Antiques. Boone is equidistant and offers everything you could need, although you will find the hustle and bustle hard to take after spending one night in Mellow Yellow.
You can walk, bike or drive into Historic Todd...only two miles and enjoy fresh baked muffins and coffee in the morning at Todd Mercantile, or drop by the General Store on Friday's for live music and sit on a barrel and join in! If you are looking for activities, River Girl is right there in the old train station, and Kelly will be delighted to take you fly fishing, or drop you in for a leisurely paddle or tube down the oldest river in North America.

Elk Knob State Park is a few minutes drive and offers a challenging yet remote hike up to about 5,600 feet in elevation. Pick blackberries along the way and bring plenty of water to drink..it's quite challenging but what a view at the top!

The bottom line is that you can do something different every day, but tearing yourself away from home will be the hardest part!

How sad it was to see how this "once" beautiful restored farm house, has been left to detoriate over the past few years. Badly in need of a frest new coat of paint, someone painted over the stained wooden floor on the covered porch and now it's ugly and peeling badly, all the once beautiful flower gardens are over grown and full of weeds, the apple orchard has also been neglected and the ponds which once had rainbow trout, are now full of scum & algi. So So Sad!! :o(

Thanks for letting us use your historic farmhouse! The kids loved exploring all of the land and the location was very handy for exploring the area! Lots of wildlife to see and beautiful views!

My husband and I love the Todd area and rented this farm house for our 35th wedding anniversary. This is truly a place where you can slow down and step away from the world. We hiked to the top of the hill behind the house, picked apples in the back yard and made an apple pie, and spent hours sitting on the porch enjoying the mountain breezes. Wildflowers were blooming everywhere and we were reminded again what peaceful country sounds like. There is no air conditioning, but fans are available to pull those night breezes in the house. If you want a place to just slow down - this is it. We would recommend an SUV to drive up the road leading to the home, but the driveway itself was in good condition.

What a great little house! The property is wonderful and the views are great. Todd is just an adorable community. We ate at the General Store and heard great music and had a good meal on Friday night, explored nearby West Jefferson Saturday. Had another good meal at the Riverside Restaurant on Saturday night and had fun watching our kids dance to bluegrass on the stage in downtown Todd that night, too. River girl fishing company is great. Our boys loved Petunia the pig, and we had a blast tubing on the New River. The house is a great retreat in and of itself.

We loved our stay at Mellow Yellow! It was a comfortable, clean home in a lovely setting, with an awesome front porch! We were in Todd for the New River Race, in which several from our family of 6 ran. The rest of us enjoyed walks and a refreshingly quiet, lazy morning on the deck. We also stayed on the porch late in the evening to talk and stargaze - something we don't often get to enjoy in the city! The only negative element of our weekend at Mellow Yellow was the long gravel driveway leading to the house. It is somewhat rough, and we had a Volvo wagon with low clearance that was heavily loaded with passengers and cargo. So we needed to exercise some care to keep the bottom from scraping. Overall our experience was great, and we certainly would recommend this property to others. We ourselves hope to return!

Really enjoyable location. The house is very nice & rustic. I loved the view from the front porch. The pastures & mountains were beautiful. Just a great setting. Lots of places to explore in the area. We always find new things to do in every season. of course just relaxing on the property is wonderful. No TV, no internet & no cell phone coverage made this a true getaway. the house was very clean & well maintained. I would definitely recommend this property.

My family and I recently stayed in Mellow Yellow and absolutly LOVED it. The property is beautiful and secluded. It really is a place to go to truly get away from the hustle and bustle of life. The house has so much character, was very clean and was true to the description listed. The owners were great to work with and easy to get up with if needed. I highly reccomend this place to those looking to explore, for relaxation or quietness.

This wonderful old home, has so much character, quirkiness and honest beauty. It is very rare to find a vacation home with such authentic warmth. There is no pretentiousness, no over the top "decor", no overload of media/tech. This home simply abounds with the things that make families happy.....beautiful meadows, windows that can let in crisp mountain air, a wide wrap around porch, and enchanting starry night skies. We cannot wait to return again next year.

would have enjoyed my stay some better, if hadnt been for all the flys inside and out, all we got done was tryng to keep them off, and off our food every time we ate, never seen so many, and the surrounding area of the house could use some maintance, our arrival date was july 18th 2011

Owner response: Well in all the years we have rented this is the only person who ever complained. Asking for a free night after the rental was up, and complaining about bugs which are a part of the outdoor world. I guess you cant please all the people all the time, but the only thing we can think is that the two horses that grazed in our front pasture had lots of flys on them, so we asked our neighbor (who owns the horses) to move them down to the lower pasture and the fly's disappeared with them. One thing for sure about the mountains is that insects are prolific...butterflys everwhere, bumble bees and millions of interesting creatures you just dont see in the streets of a city. However, all the windows have screens. As for the maintainence the guest is talking about, we constantly strive to keep the house taken care of and have a mowing service, a maid service and handyman on call. We plan on stripping the porch paint at some point this Fall, but it is a huge job and we are waiting for the season to end so that we dont disturb any guests. The house is over 100 years old, but frankly I think it is in great shape considering the usage it gets. If you are reading this response and planning a trip, please note that we have a stream next to the house which had hand laid stones so that the water would flow over the top of them. A recent guest decided to allow their kids to smash the rocks in two and it has disrupted the flow somewhat, but I will be repairing it soon. Please be sure that nobody moves those rocks, it is difficult to repair. Also, please feel free to let us know if there is anything we can do better, it is our home not a 'business property' and we want it to be as comfortable for you as it is for us. Many thanks!

Mellow Yellow is a beautiful home and property with everything provided for a relaxing home away from home. We spent relaxing evenings on the roomy porch having dinner and chatting as the stars came out. There was plenty of room for the dogs to run and play and a perfect little creek bubbling along. The pony and donkey were very friendly and came to expect treats from us pretty quickly. The house had plenty of room while still having the cottage feel and the owners were happy to help us find our way on the first night. We could not have asked for anything more!!!

Now this is a real secret! If you hike out of the back of our property up to the paved road and follow back down the mountain you will come to an old barn where you can pick up the Indian Cave trail. When we first bought the property there was no subdivision, so finding it was quite a treat...locals lore says it was a popular place for Native American messengers to spend the night.

                      Owner info

                      Year Purchased: 2006

About the owner: We are a family of four that love the outdoors. We enjoy hiking, working in the yard, swimming, boating and horse back riding. Any opportunity to get some fresh air and excercise we take! That's why we bought Mellow Yellow. The outdoors is the best part, but the intimate cozy nature of the house is just what you want when you want to be together.

                      Why the Owner Chose Todd:
One of the best things for us was the proximity to home in Wilmington. Only 4.5 hours easy driving and reachable without too many 'rest' stops along the way even with two little ones! Closeness to Boone and West Jefferson is also nice just in case we need to shop..and all the outdoor features of the Appallachians are within about 30 minutes.

The Unique Benefits at this Farmhouse:
The primary enjoyment for us is the outdoors. Apples, Pears, Cherries, Peaches, Rhubarb, Blackberries and clean great spring water are amoung the many things we love about the property. The water is so good, we bring a 5 gallon container and take it home with us. Hike the property and enjoy the air.
