About the Firehouse:

Built in 1885, the Firehouse features a 2500 square foot upstairs that is completely renovated with central heat and air. The living room is a spacious 30 by 27 feet with 18-foot ceilings! The walls of the living room are adorned with a variety of original art, and in addition to a large screen tv and sofa there is a pool table in one corner. The dining room is also sizable, with the original wood-paneled firehouse lockers on either side of the room. The kitchen is a large with a butcher block center island and a hint of French country flavor. In the private bathroom there are still the original trough sink and tub.

The Firehouse is on R St. NW in the historic Shaw neighborhood of Washington, centrally located and just a short walk away from many amenities. DC restaurants and nightlife are close by of the 14th Street and U Street corridors. Two grocery stores are within walking distance, including a Giant Grocery on 9th and a Whole Foods six blocks away on P Street. Public transportation is easily accessible, as the Shaw/Howard Green Line Metro stop and numerous Metrobus stops are about a block away, making commuting from the firehouse a breeze. If you own a car, nearby parking is plentiful-- there are multiple parking garages as well as free on-street parking directly across from the firehouse.

For parties of 2-3 people, except for the bedroom and the private bathroom, the rest of the space (kitchen, living room, and dinning room) is shared with the owner, a prominent local light sculptor, on the second floor. On the first floor of the firehouse is his studio, so he will be in and out briefly of the upstairs during the day. The bedroom itself is 17.5 feet by 12 feet with 18-foot ceilings and sleeps 2-3 people comfortably between the queen sized bed and sleeper sofa/futon. Rent for this room and the private bathroom is $145 a night with a two-night minimum. Rent for the third person is an extra $35.00/night.

For parties of 4-6 people, there is the option of renting out the entire upstairs of the firehouse for $475 a night. This gives you access to two bedrooms with queen beds (and an additional sleeper sofa/futon in one room), a futon in the living room, and 2500 square feet of living space. The owner will be in and out briefly during the day since the downstairs is his working studio, but after 6pm you will have the entire space to yourself.

If interested, send us an email or call the number below and specify if you are interested in the rooms for 2-3 or 4-6 people and which dates you would like to stay. Since this space is also rented for parties, if you intend to have additional guests over while you are a guest with us, please let us know ahead of time and we can work out an arrangement. Please keep in mind that there is an additional cleaning fee of $50 for guests staying 3 nights or more. We look forward to your stay!!

Awsome stay in the heart of DC

Guest: Dekel F.
Date of Stay: 10/08/11 Review Submitted: 02/07/12

We are a family of 4 and spent 6 days visiting DC this autumn. We arrived late in the evening and Craig waited for us and had the room arranged for our "group" although it was a weekend. We loved our stay in this very unique house. The choice was perfect as it was just off city attractions (we walked back each day for about 30 minutes). The room and actually the complete floor were for our use. The place was clean, quiet, private and perfect for our needs. We loved the large private bathroom and playing pool in the evenings. The full kitchen was great for breakfast and preparing our daypack- it certainly saved us a lot of money. Another great benefit is the excellent "Whole Foods" store nearby. We strongly recommend this as your choice to visit DC. Craig (the owner) was very pleasant and very respectful of our privacy. Thank you Craig for allowing us to share your wonderful Firehouse residence! and making us feel at home.

EXCELLENT CHOICE for a Washington DC visit.

My husband and I loved our stay in this very unique setting. The choice was perfect as it was very close to the Green / Yellow Line Metro. There was ample parking on the street right across from the Firehouse so we didn't have to drive around, looking for a space to park. We left the vehicle and used the Metro to see the Smithsonians and to get to the Dupont Circle to have a very nice dinner at an Italian restaurant that was recommended by the owner. We found the rental to be clean, quiet, private and perfect for our needs. We loved the large private bathroom, the historic aspect of the firehouse and pretty much everything about our weekend stay. We plan to return in the future and we strongly recommend this as your choice to visit DC. Craig (the owner) was very pleasant and very respectful of our privacy. Thank you Craig for allowing us to share your wonderful Firehouse residence!

We spent a week visiting DC. The firehous is very near the metro, and an easy walk to some great resturants. We had a rental car for two days and found plenty of parking across the street. We felt safe walking around in the evenings. The owner was very helpful and made us feel right at home. We would recommend this place to anyone visiting DC.

Amazing, Comfortable, Unique-stay like a local!

My 10 1/2 year old son and I stayed here for 5 nights while visiting all that DC has to offer. We enjoyed the location and ease of walking one block to the Metro as we did not have a car. At the end of a long day out it was a very inexpensive cab ride from the Mall. The room was very spacious and the bed amazingly comfortable. The availability of a full kitchen for breakfast and after sightseeing snacks certainly saved us hundreds of dollars. Craig was easy to work with and very helpful on local eateries and travel. Highly suggest renting the firestation, you will love it!

Perfect Accommodations

It was the perfect place for us. Easy to find, parking was no hassle, and it's very close to the metro and good restaurants. It's ver clean and most comfortable. We enjoyed the authentic firehall atmosphere. We had everything we needed and felt that it was our home away from home after spending a day as a tourist. The owner made us feel quite welcome and was very helpful with our questions. We definitely recommend staying here!

The firehouse is fascinating and fun, the neighborhood has lots of interesting restaurants in walking distance, and the metro stop is very close which makes for easy sight seeing. There is plenty of nearby free parking and our room was comfortable and clean. What more could you ask for?

Firehouse Joy

Guest: Karen (Cincinnati OH)
Date of Stay: 03/28/11 Review Submitted: 04/13/11

My husband and I began planning our family spring break trip and happened upon this jewel. My son, grade 2, loves all vehicles "emergency" and could not get over our stay in an authentic and historic firehouse. My daughter loved the large windows and high ceilings, and the beautiful artwork created by the homeowner; it was a perfect stay. We were thrilled with the sleeping arrangements- comfortable beds in one bedroom, quiet room despite in-town location, kitchen, full bath (plenty of hot water for our family of 4 to shower) and family room- complete with pool table. Quick and safe walk to restaurants, grocery and Metro, which gives you easy access to the entire city of Washington D.C. My son said it best: "Mom, this is just my dream vacation." Easy parking for a vehicle if you drive in. An ideal location from which to see the city. Could not recommend it more highly. We were all sad to leave and look forward to another visit.

Our stay at The Firehouse was very enjoyable, comfortable and convenient. The historic firehouse is close to all the DC attractions and is full of character. It is now a home, with a large guest room and private bath, a working art studio downstairs and a showcase of original art works upstairs. Our host makes it his priority to give his guests loads of privacy. We felt right at home sharing the house kitchen. The local neighborhoods were an easy walk for groceries and dinner out. The Firehouse was a great place to call home while in DC. Thanks again Craig.

Unique and fantastic

It's more than a home. It's an art gallery, a workshop, an oasis. Craig was a great host. As advertised, is no more than a two minute walk to the Metro. Near historic Shaw/U Street the neighborhood has undergone a great transformation. Plenty of friendly neighborhood restaurants and bars to choose from or a very nice Whole Foods market if you wish to do your own thing. Perfect for parents/friends visiting students at the university. It's a authentic firehouse, must be able to climb stairs.

We thoroughly enjoyed our week's stay in this delightful restored fire house, and look forward to future stays there. The artist/owner is very affable and accommodating (and does fantastic work, some remarkable pieces of which are displayed in the living area on the second floor). The neighborhood is wonderful,at the edge of the historic Shaw District and only about 3 blocks from Howard U., and ideally located, a block-and-a-half from a Metro station. We came and went with ease at all hours with no problems. We loved it!!
