Over the past 20 years, travelers have enjoyed a unique vacation experience staying in our lovingly maintained 18th Century villa and ancestral home, Casale Sonnino. The Villa is built upon 2000 year old foundations and set amidst thirty acres of working vineyards and olive groves, 40 minutes from the heart of Rome. Featured in "Gourmet Magazine" and "The Boston Globe", in articles written by enchanted guests, the Casale Sonnino has been called "home" by families, groups of friends and artists with their paint brushes. Many return year after year to enjoy the small town Italian hospitality, excellent local restaurants and authentic country living, yet be close to all that Rome has to offer.

Indeed, the Casale Sonnino is your perfect home base for exploring the beautiful hill towns of the Castelli Romani, touring the central Italian countryside from Florence to the Amalfi Coast and, of course, basking in the art, antiquities, history and the thriving "dolce vita" that is Rome. The Coliseum, the Roman Forum, the Vatican Basilica and Museum, Piazza Navona, the Borghese Gallery with the famed Bernini Statues, the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain and, of course, designer shopping near the Piazza di Spagna are all at your doorstep. When you sip your wine or espresso on the Casale’s terrace at sunset, the whole city sparkles before you.

Our guests have often commented that the Casale is a "timeless place". After a busy day of touring, you can rest comfortably surrounded by the modern day amenities of home. You can also dine on a renaissance refectory table, have your dessert and coffee under a crystal chandelier or cozy up to a statue of Hercules who might just ask you about the book that you are reading.

For me, the Casale is a "place out of time." My children ride on the farm tractor, pick figs and grapes, explore the maze of caves from the 12th Century buried below the vineyards, visit world class museums and learn about history layer by layer. When staying at the Casale, we leave the high-tech video whirlwind behind and slow the pace down. At night, we play ping pong, foozball and cards. When blissful sleep washes over us, we dream about the interesting places we have seen and the adventures that filled our days.

The Casale Sonnino sleeps up to ten, six to eight persons most comfortably, in five bedrooms and three full baths.

Housekeeping and laundry service is included in the weekly rate. Daily breakfast, tour guide and cook service are available upon request.

Over the years, we have hosted hundreds of artists, groups of friends and families who come to relax, paint, tour the countryside and hear stories about the Casale, the land and its owners through the last 2000 years. When you come into our home, you are sure to experience a special camaraderie and an unforgettable sojourn in "La Bella Italia".

Why the Owner Chose Frascati

The Casale Sonnino has been passed down from generation to generation and now we are the lucky owners. The property has a prime location close to Rome, yet offers the small village-agrarian ambiance and pace for a relaxing and memorable vacation.

The Unique Benefits at this Villa

The Casale has a unique location in the countryside near charming villages with restaurants and stores, piazzas and churches, yet Rome is a mere 30 minutes away by train. Your host, George grew up and was educated in the US, so he speaks English and Italian fluently. He is happy to share his love for the Casale and it's unique history - it's built upon 2000-year old Roman foundations and a system of caves. Guests have access to the museums, art, sites and shopping in Rome and can tour the towns of central Italy from Amalfi to the South to Florence to the North. Hadrians Villa, Tivoli Gardens/Villa D'Este, Tusculuum and Ostia Antica are some of the popular local destinations.

This is me, Claire and my brother George along with my son Aaron. George and I now own the Casale Sonnino, as we recently inherited it from our mom, Clotilde Sonnino Treves. We are the fourth generation owners since 1883 and we carrying on with the family homestead, selling grapes to a local winemaker, producing awesome extra virgin olive oil and welcoming guests from around the world.

I live in Port Washington, NY with my husband and two now-teenagers. The boy you see in the photo is an avid trumpet-blowing baseball player and my daughter is focused on tennis, tennis, tennis. While at-home, being a sports-mom, driver and cook, I am using my MBA-corporate marketing background managing our property and villa rental with my brother...

George is the manager of Casale and now is a resident of Monte Porzio Catone. He (as was I) was born, raised and college-educated in the US, but has always had one leg, and part of his heart, in Italy. Our parents (both Italian) would bring us to the home country for vacations and worked hard at passing on the Italian language, culture and friendships to their children. Having grown up in a household where music, art and great food and hospitality were stressed, George brings a very personal touch to the experience of our all our guests.

The casale is really an oasis: home away from home. The large double bedrooms are pretty and keep very clean. Our laundry is washed daily. The food is excellent and served at alarge diningrom table Lunch is eaten outside under grape arbors. The surrounding towns are accesible by car.

A grand Casale as tour base for Rome & vicinity.

In the Alban Hills, where leading Romans escaped the bustle of Rome, Casale Sonnino on its high airy site has a view of St. Peter’s Basilica. I have stayed at the Casale three times: once with an art group, once with my children & grandchildren, and once with a friend. You are close enough to Rome to be there in time to take the first tour at St. Peter’s Basilica after enjoying the leisurely breakfast served indoors or in the garden. There are so many places that are within easy reach of the Casale that I list only those that I have visited. Some half day trips were to Frascati, Monte Porzio Catone, Montecompatri, Tusculum, Hadrian’s Villa, Villa d’Este, Grottoferrata, Castel Gandolfo, famous for Lake Albano and the Pope’s summer residence, the Lake of Nemi, Subbiaco, the Cathedral & Museum of Palestrina, & Ostia Antica. Easy one day round trips were to the gardens of Ninfa, Abbies of Valvisciolo and Fossanova, Tarquinia, and Citivacecchia. Travel by rental car or with car & driver arranged for by the owner of the Casale, or to Rome on the train. The villa’s permanent housekeeper provides daily laundry service and, should you prefer not to cook dinner, she will prepare a delicious one ready to serve when you return from a full day of touring. Leave the dishes—she will do the cleanup. At Casale Sonnino you live in a grand house in a grand manner. The bedrooms are attractive and roomy and the huge living room with views in three directions and a lounge offer indoor peace; outdoors relax on the front patio, under the pergola, or on the terrace overlooking the olive groves & vineyards surrounding the Casale.

A wonderful experience!

“I don't think I can express how wonderful our stay at Casale Sonnino was but I will do my best. I will say that going in we had pretty high expectations based on the information that the owner provided. We were blown away by how much better it was than advertised. From the moment we arrived we were treated to first class service by a staff that truly seems to love what they do. The staff prepared coffee for us each morning along with setting out the breakfast items we had purchased. They even prepared a hot breakfast for us on a couple of mornings. Another huge plus was the fact that they did our laundry for us on a daily basis. The property was beautifully maintained, the surrounding vineyards and olive groves were wonderful and it truly gave the feeling that we were Italians for the week. We had a large group of ten and the accommodations were well suited for that size group. We enjoyed all of our morning and evening meals outside under a vine covered pergola that sat between the house and the vineyards. The owner had cautioned us in advance that the proximity of the property to the highway might pose some traffic noise issues. I know that all of us slept with the windows open and the traffic noise was never a concern. The general format for our stay consisted of day trips to Rome, Positano, Pompeii, etc. The location of the property was ideally suited for this. We rented 2 cars and found that we had no problem getting around. Also, the property is in close proximity to 2 train stations that make getting to Rome an easy 25 minute ride. I can't say enough good things about Casale Sonnino and would highly recommend a stay there.”

Casale Sonnino - A slice of heaven!

Guest: Larry C (Singapore)
Date of Stay: 08/15/09 Review Submitted: 11/09/09

Casale Sonnino – It was an absolutely wonderful and delightful stay, with the house being all that was expected and more! We were warmly greeted by the caretakers, and of course the Captain of the house (the cat!). The arrival brunch was a multicourse masterpiece that left us both speechless as well as unmoving – After all that food, who could move! The days in Rome were an experience for our family (of 10!). While Rome was hot and somewhat stifling – Typical August weather – Casale Sonnino offered a nice respite due to its higher position in the hills. We also explored the villages above Casale Sonnino – Frascati, Monte Compatre, Monte Porzio, and a little further afield Tivoli and Antica. All were easily accessible from Casale Sonnino. During this whole time, our refuge of Casale Sonnino never failed to deliver. Every morning a scrumptious breakfast was laid out, the caretaker was instrumental in guidance and instructions, and I do believe I speak for everyone in saying that it was truly a lifelong memorable time. We were offered a unique view of the Casale Sonnino ‘underworld’ with a tour of the wine catacombs – Amazing … and nice and cool! Our evenings were spent hanging out under the Frascati grapes perched above us on the veranda, as well as marveling at the view of the Rome countryside from the rooftop. Just writing about this is now going to disturb my work for the rest of the week, as I will be thinking of vineyards and olive trees, and the wonderful memories from Casale Sonnino. ljc - Singapore

It is hardly possible to put in words all the wonderful things about Casale Sonnino. Your stay will certainly be beyond your expectations and I can only recommend that any traveler to the Rome area leap at the opportunity to bring this beautiful home, its loving family and caretakers and the many inevitable memories and exciting experiences into their lives. We stayed at the Casale for 1 week in May 2008 with a group of close friends and family (7) and a 6 month old baby. For all my research to find the best lodging which could accommodate our group the casale seemed a beautiful and practical choice: plenty of beds/baths, close to transportation to Rome for sightseeing, quiet and pristine for relaxation, english speaking hosts, close to grocery and other shopping, etc...many practical reasons that the casale provides travelers a comfortable and convenient accommodation for both a quite getaway as well as exciting Rome experiences. But the casale quickly exceeded any of our expectations. The photos do little justice to just how beautiful the farmhouse is and the breathtaking beauty of the surrounding area. We rented cars and Geppe met us at the airport and lead us safely thru Rome and to Monte Porzio Catone where the casle is located. He gave us a personal tour of Frascati on our first day of arrival and he and George prepared a delicious welcome dinner for our first night. We could not have felt more safe and welcome to Italy. The casale and its grape & rose covered arbor were so relaxing we found ourselves struggling to pull away to travel into Rome. Although we had planned to tour historic Rome daily we often chose instead to sip wine in the arbor or spend long days in Frascati and the Castelli Romani hill towns. Can you believe we only ate out a few times the entire week? We loved the local food so much that we cooked at the casale and then spent the cool nights in front of the large fireplace together. Every member of our group still longingly reminisces about our time together at Casale Sonnino and keeps the carved words from the mantle in heart - "We shall return". Our advice to future guests: take the tour of the casale's caves, spend a day in Frascati, Monte Porzio & Tivoli, get to know the hosts, walk to the end of the rose arbor and down the stairs to the sitting garden, rent a car, buy the pesto at Frascati's grocery store, let Elvira wash your cloths and make morning coffee (wow!), don't forget Rome, ENJOY EVERYTHING!
