Location: Weston, Vermont, USA (South Central Vermont; 15 miles from Manchester)
Accommodations: Home, 3 Bedrooms + Loft, 2.5 Baths (Sleeps 6-8)
Choose a charming Vermont farmhouse for a memorable ski vacation, a cool summer getaway, or an autumn trip to view nature's color. Located in the peaceful Green Mountain National Forest at the meeting point of two mountain streams, Jenny Brook Farm is a nature lover's delight.
The completely restored 1830's farmhouse, selected by FORBES on line as one of five outstanding fall rentals from around the country, has all the amenities you need, if you're adventurous enough to choose a home that's "off the power grid." We generate our own electricity, so that means there are a few extras you will need to know.
The house has four bedrooms: a master suite with queen-size bed and bath, one queen-size guest bedroom, and a third guest bedroom with two twins. A loft that opens to the den below has a full-size bed, a twin bed, and a bath.
The fully-equipped modern kitchen has a Jenn-Air cooktop and wall oven, plus an eight-burner cast iron wood stove if you would like to cook the old-fashioned way - I would highly recommend this for the tastiest Thanksgiving turkey dinner you will ever cook.
The dining room has a large antique banquet table that can easily seat 12 in front of a brick fireplace. The focal point of the den is a huge river-stone fireplace, floor-to-ceiling windows, and original hand-hewn beams in what was formerly an attached barn.
The 36-acre farm sits at the end of town-maintained gravel road, so you will feel like you are escaping from it all. In reality, you are just one and one-half miles from one of Vermont’s most picturesque villages situated right on the West River.
Weston, Vermont is the home of the famous Vermont Country Store, where you will find old-fashioned provisions and remedies that you just cannot find anywhere else. You will love the Weston Playhouse productions - a summer theatre. Weston is also home to several small museums, charming little shops, a gourmet country inn restaurant, and a town green with a gazebo that just takes you back to a simpler time.
Skiing is what you do in the winter. Jenny Brook Farm is centrally located to no less than five major ski resorts - Okemo Mountain (ten minutes), Stratton (15 minutes), Magic Mountain (15 minutes), Bromley (20 minutes), and Killington/Pico (30 minutes) away. If you prefer cross-country skiing, you do not even have to get into your car. Just 100 yards beyond the house the plowed road ends and the state-maintained cross-country trails begin. In just minutes you are off through the woods, by streams, into the mountains for a most peaceful and satisfying winter sport.
If you need a dose of home, there is a TV/DVD/video and a large movie library. No cable or satellite here. There is cell phone service, but it can be spotty at times. The house is fully equipped with linens, dishes, cookware, five bikes, and two large rubber rafts for the pond. There is even a vintage 1962 Ford Farm Tractor with a trailer, if you want to take your own hay ride.
