We had 9 people in our party ranging from age 22 - 75. We came to spend time with y marine son and sightsee in San Diego. There was plenty of space for all. It was a pleasure cooking with family and friends gathered at the table and sofas in the connecting spaces. The patio space was beautifully designed . We enjoyed the fireplace on the patio in the evening. The music system was a hit with all. Just as stated the shops, entertainment and beaches were all within walking distance. We were also close to the Zoo, Old San Diego, Coronado and we had a great time visiting them. We were also nice and close to the airport, which we did have to go back and forth to a couple of times picking and dropping people off. Oh and the beds were amazingly comfortable. Thank you Catherine and Kyle for sharing your lovely home with me, my family and friends.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

My group of friends enjoyed an amazing weekend in this luxurious home. There was plenty of room and sleeping areas for at least a dozen people. The open backyard with fireplace was a great place to relax. House has all the amenities for cooking, relaxing or going to the beach. Location convenient to downtown SD, airport, Sea World, Legoland and golf. Perfect weekend rental!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway.

What a wonderful place to stay! Close enough to walk to restaurants, shops, cafes, the beach etc. This house is not only beautiful, but large and great for entertaining! We hosted a large group from overseas for two weeks in this beautiful home and had a lovely experience. Catherine and Kyle were extremely accommodating and helpful before and throughout our stay! We highly recommend this wonderful home in the heart of the La Jolla Village! We will definitely be back to visit!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

There were 16 of us in this house; we were all very comfortable in the space, and we never felt crowded. That being said, we were disappointed upon arrival to find this home in disrepair. I found myself texting Catherine the owner several times within the first day to make her aware of certain issues, holes in the walls, closet doors that didn’t open, a cracked toilet tank with holes in it, (there had been no walk thru to make notations of existing issues in the home) I was fearful that we would be blamed for the problems. The plumbing downstairs in one of the bathrooms had no hot water or water pressure. We decided not to make a big deal about it, after all we had travelled from all over the country and we only see each other once a year. When we left everything was as we found it. We were told that the deposit would be sent out the following week. A week after we checked out, owner contacted us saying that we “destroyed” their grill, and we needed to pay $800 dollars for a new grill. We used the grill twice while we were there and it was working fine. We asked for pictures of the “destroyed” grill, never received any. We called a BBQ repair in La Jolla to see if they could fix it, or if it needed to be replaced. Catherine told my husband that she was too busy to research getting it fixed, and just wanted to be done with it and buy a new grill. (!) She agreed to have it looked at. BBQ Depot told us the grill’s burner needed replacing, that it was old and had holes in it causing gas to leak out; it needed a new igniter too. We “destroyed “it? We knew we had to pay for the repairs, or lose our deposit, which they had put a hold on after we had already received the check, and deposited it, they never told us the funds weren’t there. We paid $181 for the repair. They automatically wanted us to replace a grill that would have failed for whoever used it next and gave us 3 days to resolve the issue, after we had been out of the house for 7 days! We told them that we shouldn’t have to pay for the wear and tear of their old grill. At this point Catherine became insulting accusing us of being “sneaky” and dishonest by not telling them we had broken their grill?! BEWARE if anything should break on your watch, they will hold your deposit ransom and try to make YOU buy them a new one. 32 Days after checking out of the house, funds became available for the check to clear, we ate the return check fees & old grill repairs.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, families with young children.
Owner response: Let me start by saying how sad and upseting it is for me the owner to see that it takes one to ruin it for all the others! I am the proud owner of the “La Jolla Mansion” and I do take great care and pleasure at renting our house through VRBO. So far, we have been very lucky and blessed to have come across respectful and caring renters. We have been rated five stars repetitively. Unfortunately, it is a matter of time before a black sheep ruins it. Let me now address the accusations below: Mrs. “P” asked me if she could check in early, right away I obliged. I did meet her at the property and gave her the house tour before I handed her over the keys and wished her and her group a great time. I do not use a property management co., and I do not leave a lockbox at the door. I meet you in person and I walk you through the house and answer all of your questions right here and there. I did show her that the previous renters had damaged the toilet which was still fully functional. Told her it had to be special ordered and would not be ready right away. She responded that as long as the toilet was functioning it was “no big deal”. There is NO hole in the walls and you have hot water or you dont! Regarding the 5 year old Weber BBQ, she admitted that she and her party used the grill. They checked out omitting to mention that the grill had been damaged during their use. My mistake was to not check the grill. Within two days, and from her own admittance in her review below, I sent her back deposit in full. NOW, would I be sending her deposit in full two days after check out if I intended on keeping her money? Two days later new renters checked in. Right away they noticed the BBQ being broken. I called Mrs P who had by now received her full deposit and asked her what happened. She immediately said that they did not damaged anything. Considering the obvious lack of good faith, I was forced to put a hold on her deposit until the matter was resolved. I called a repair company and made an appointment. She refused to use my company and wanted to use her own, I agreed immediately. It turns out two knobs had been melted/damaged as a result of the misuse of the grill. She paid $181 for the repairs. I then released her deposit. Now, Mrs. “P” lashes out because she had to take responsibility for her actions. Again, would I have sent her the full deposit back after her departure if I intended on doing what she claims I tried to do? I think not, but I let you be the judge.

My family, 8 adults & 8 children, recently rented this property so we could stay together for our son's wedding. I would start by saying the owners were an absolute joy to deal with. They were both very responsive with answers to the questions we had about the property. The house is beautiful and was exactly what we had hoped for. When I first spoke with the owner he told me we would love the house. He was right. It was a perfect fit for our family. I would highly reccomend this property to anyone.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.

Thank you very much for your kindness about renting and then us having to cancel out week at your beautiful home in La Jolla, CA. As explained to you, our daughter's wedding was canceled 2 months before the special date. Of course, this was after we had made the reservations with you. We were in CA during the week that the wedding was suppose to take place and drove by your property. It sits in a charming neighborhood and close to the town. We so wanted to take advantage of your home and all the extras as described on your website, 7 bedrooms, separate studio, huge kitchen for entertaining and a terrific yard where we could have had a party for the out-of-town wedding guests. The family was going to use this home as a gathering place to relax and to prepare for the special wedding. Nonetheless, we came and stayed with our daughter to support her during this sad time and your understanding of the situation was appreciated. We definitely will keep your home in mind for future plans and hopefully happy events in the future. Thank you.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We had the absolute delight of using Catherine and Kyle's home as home base for our wedding week in La Jolla. The Harringtons were accommodating, responsive and professional from start to finish. Our only regret of the entire experience was finally having to leave the property! We will absolutely be back and can only hope we will find availability to stay here again. Each of our guests that either visited or stayed at the house has commented what a perfect complement the house was to our wedding events. Friends and family were brought together in such special ways including our intimate rehearsal dinner, evenings around the fireplace, and the bridal party getting ready just to name a few. Rent with confidence as the location, description and pictures are well represented in the listing. The house is very spacious and well equipped. Towels, linens, hairdryers, irons, kitchen equipment is all very adequate. The pictures can't do justice to the bright sunshine and fresh breezes that fill the house with plenty of doors and windows to open. The outdoor decks and patios are great to enjoy the San Diego weather. It is a wonderful quiet location just a short walk to anything in the village. Should you choose to rent please respect and cherish this property as much as we did, so my wife and I can return to enjoy it again (very soon I hope).Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

My family and I travelled down to La Jolla from Las Vegas specifically for my son's graduation from UCSD. This palatial property amazed everyone in my family - no-one (except for me) had expected such a beautiful house and grounds. 2 downstairs bedrooms and bathrooms were incredible since both sets of grandparents could not negotiate stairs. The property, itself, is located just a few minutes' walk from the center of La Jolla. The views from the rear, upstairs bedrooms cannot be understated. But what made this particular trip truly, truly special is the fact that this property's owners, Kyle and Catherine, were unbelievably responsive, accommodating, and helpful, even though I contacted them on numerous occasions!!! I cannot recommend this property or its owners highly enough. One of my best VRBO experiences ever, and I have been using VRBO for a long, long time...Recommended for: People with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

The home is beautiful. The setting is lovely. The size was perfect for our family. The ourdoor fireplace is perfect for San Diego weather!! We did have 2 concerns though. First, the kitchen sink and outdoor furniture were not clean and there was a vase of dead flowers in the dining room. Also, there seemed to be a limited number of towels available.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway.

Gracious substantial home centrally located for all attractions, tennis and golf in San Diego. The home itself has generous sized bedrooms and baths. The mattresses are very comfortable, linens were very good. The outside patio was lovely and perfect for relaxing evenings after long days of exploring. The kitchen was generous in size and was used by "the guest gourmet chef" to prepare a meal for our family. The property is clean and very well maintained. The property manager was timely, helpful, well informed, and pleasant. I would recommend this property and rate it excellent. Our family memories are priceless.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Me and my friends always plan random trips every couple of months. So we wanted to find a Beach house. I came across Kyle's spot, and might I say this place was the perfect spot! The Beach is only a couple minutes away. It has everything you can ask for, big rooms, a huge kitchen, TV's in every room, a bathroom in every room, and the best part, the backyard! the backyard is spacious with a beautiful fireplace you and your family/friends can hang around by and relax. Kyle provides all the amenities you need, you don't have to pack anything! overall, my friends and i enjoyed his place so much, we might just make this a yearly thing for us to do. thanks kyle and corry! you guys were great in answering and responding to all my questions quickly! we all loved the place, hopefully we can do business with you guys again soon!Did you find this review helpful? We stayed here for a friend's b-day and it was a lot more than I expected! Very spacious home with plenty of beds, lounge areas, and plenty of BATHROOMS spaces throughout the house! In addition to all of the usual things provided (towels, plates/cups/utensils), the owner has a stash of beach chairs, toys, beach towels that we ended up borrowing. If you have kids, no worries! A high chair and stroller is also available. The fire pit in the backyard made lounging outdoors more enjoyable since the weather was a little chilly at night.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car.

My friends and I stayed here over a long weekend. I would definitely recommend this place for large groups. We had a three families, all with 1 or 2 kids and three singles. Space was never an issue and we never felt like we were bumping into each other. I had a number of local friends over for a BBQ one evening and it was perfect for the event. The master bedroom is very nice! The local property manager was always available and willing to answer those inevitable questions Location is very good, close to La Jolla Shores beach and downtown La Jolla. Walking to the beach is a little bit of a stretch, but parking wasn't a huge issue. It's very accessible to a number of activities by car (beaches, golf, Seaworld, Legoland, etc.) I would rent this house all over again.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

We used this house as the center for our son's cllege graduation. The six bedrooms and six baths allowed us to comfortably sleep 14 people. The house is as advertised and well kept. The kitchen was very well equipped with many utensils and high end pots and pans. The BBQ is a Weber. The patio area was perfect for the Saturday party fr about 45 people. There was plenty of parking just down the street. The only draw back was the hot water. We returned from a kayak trip and everyone wanted to shower. With six showers going simultaneously, we rapidly ran ot of hot water. Kyle returned our security deposit within a week, which was very professional of him. Kyle's manager Corry was always available toanswer questions or help. Overall it was a wonderful stay and all of our guests were very happy.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.

Dear Kyle, it's been almost 2 weeks since we got back home from San Diego & we already miss being at 1540 Soledad. It was the perfect place for our yearly reunion with college friends. The house is just beautiful, very well kept & clean. Being very conveniently located from all the major tourist attractions & La Jolla downtown made getting around very easy. I planned a five-day spring vacation for a group of nine family members and friends (April 4 - April 8, 2010). We rented the La Jolla Mansion with excitement and high expectations as advertised by the VRBO listing as "a property that has it all". The house was in need of maintances and upkeep. The listing photos did not reflect the physical appearance of the house. Amenities were limited based on what was stated in the description. This house would not be recommended to family and friends.Owner response: To Whom it may concern, I am the property manager of the La Jolla Mansion In La Jolla , CA. I am writting in response to the complaint. Out of all my time of taking care of the house and people coming and going, I never had a situation like this one. They came to the house and I started showing them around and gave them the key and started going over some of the rules of the house and asked them was there any questions. The lady said ,"Ok, well I am going to do a walk through to see if there are any damages to let you know of." In all my time of doing this, I have never had anyone say that to me. When she said that, a red flag went up for me; and I said," by all means please do."When she and her lady friends came back to the living room and said, " I am very disgusted with this house, this house is not what it was supposed to be." The house is filthy, look at the floor. I don't even want to be in this house. And look outside, there is mold outside by the fireplace."When I asked her, "ok, tell me what is wrong with the cleaning of the house?" "Just look at the floor, it is filthy." I said, "okay, can you please show me where." Everywhere, just look at it." I got on my hands and knees and wiped my hand across the floor, right in front of everyone, and said, "look, my hand is not dirty. So can you please tell me what is dirty about the house or the floor that you are stating." Her response each time was, "everything, just everything." She could not walk me over to anything and show me any of her complaints. When she was doing all this, I thought to myself, she is trying to stay here for free or something. (Just to let you know, that I have a cleaning company, and my wife and our cleaning crew of 5, do the cleaning of this house, and have been doing it for years and many others in La Jolla. We don't get complaints of the cleanings of our properties. My wife and I, make sure of the jobs that our ladies do is top notch service for La Jolla, as you could well imagine, it's La Jolla). The lady got on the phone with the owner, and started complaining about the house. And I could only imagine what he said on other line, because of her response back to him. The owner said,"ok, then what can we do for you to make this better for you and your guests." She said," we want 50% off the bill." When I heard her say that, I thought to myself, there it is! I new she was trying to scame for something, and that's exaclty what it was. To get 50 percent off. I hope this helps.

Kyle.... it's been a week since I left 1540 Soledad which will remain in my memory as a little bit of heaven. Our family had a marvelous time together (if there were sibling problems going on, they kept them quiet!) The house was perfect.... inviting, welcoming, sheltering, comforting.... we ate together every night except for an excursion to La Jolla Mexican restaurant... we played and sunned in the back yard, we walked the beaches, we marveled at the seals and sun and shops, we became fast friends with the folks at Vons... never got to Cosco! I felt like I was in a golden cocoon with my children and grandchildren. Your house appears to be a special place for all who visit there.... and what a lovely spot to come home to every now and then. I feel like we're family now... KarenDid you find this review helpful? My family, sons, daughters in law and grandson stayed at this beautiful home and had the most wonderful time. While the house is not on the beach, it is a short ride [or walk] to most everything. The owners were cooperative, understanding and helpful to our every need. We grilled steaks and burgers in the spacious yard which was perfect for family games and for giving our family's golden retriever a fun place to run and explore new smells. I recommend the owners and their home to anyone seeking to stay in wonderful La Jolla. The beautiful weather and this lovely and expansive home will make your vacation a most special one to fondly remember.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, families with young children, pet owners.
