Location: Nerja, Andalucia, Spain, Europe (45 minutes east of Malaga International Airport)

Accommodations:  Apartment, 4 Bedrooms + No additional sleeping rooms avail, 2 Baths (Sleeps 7)

Keywords:  Penthouse Apartment

This wonderful vacation home has a spectacular panoramic view of the sea, and miles of dramatic mountainous coastline. Overlooking Nerja's popular Burriana beach, this is a one of a kind facility. The apartment's architect/owner renovated 2 adjacent apartments into one to create a generous penthouse facility intended mainly for his family's personal use, and is furnished as such.

Sea-facing rooms have wall to wall glass. A large modern kitchen is fully-equipped, complete with granite countertops. The extensive outdoor patio/terrace as well as a separate private, furnished roof deck, let you enjoy the Mediterranean ambiance from sun loungers, or while dining under the stars. The building's communal garden has a newly refurbished swimming pool open all year round.

THE PLACE: Perfect for someone looking for "that special vacation," this third floor walk-up is in a quiet residential part of Nerja, with the town square a short 6 minute walk away, down a classic Andalucian street. No car needed. It has 2 separate lounge areas (both sea-facing); an ample supply of books, audio tapes, etc. as well as many amenities for children (videos, toys, games, books, high chair etc.) Access to the building's newly renovated swimming pool in the garden overlooking the beach and the sea coast.

THE TOWN: While Nerja has a considerable tourist population, it's a world away from the high-rise vacation development elsewhere on the coast. The original Andalucian town retains its traditional character. Fishermen still bring in their morning catch down on the beach, and peddle the fish on the street corner.

LOTS TO DO: The Nerja Caves (Spain's second most visited tourist monument) are the town's most internationally-known attraction, but the location caters to other interests. Wander the typical streets, browse the Tuesday street market, pick up some Spanish at a local language school, time your stay for colourful local fiestas, or visit the Moorish fortifications at nearby Almunecar and Salobrena. The world famous "Alhambra" palace in Granada is a scenic 1 1/2 hour's drive away. Day trips to the nearby Moorish "White Villages", or jeep adventure tours into the national park in the Alpuharras region are readily available. Gibraltar, Morocco, Cordoba, and Seville (260 km) are all within a rental car's reach, or by local bus tour. (Tour bus pick-up is just a block away from the apartment.)

FOR THE ACTIVE VACATIONER: there are beach activities, or head inland. Rent a mountain bike, a motor scooter, or hike the walking paths in the mountains surrounding the town(published guide books are available locally). Tired yet? Time to wind down over wine and an evening meal, at any of a number of great restaurants, both at the beach and in town.

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 1994

We are a Canadian couple with a passion for living in Andalucia. Tim is a retired architect and Nora is a documentary producer. Our Nerja penthouse has been an adventure for the entire family. For many years our 2 boys split their education between their Canadian school and the local school in Nerja, and ended up being far more fluent in Spanish than their parents. What we love about Nerja is that although Spain has experienced huge growth in tourism, the Andalucian town of Nerja remains intact, a welcome relief along the coast. And after all these years, we still find the panoramic exposure over the Mediterranean breath-taking.

Why the Owner Chose Nerja

Tim had a history and affection for the Spanish coast dating back to the late 1960's. After touring up and down the coast from Valencia past Marbella to Estepona at the west end of the Costa del Sol over many years of visits, he found this special place in a pretty little coastal town where a car is an option but by no means a necessity. And where the local butcher recognizes you when you arrive to buy your meat. Our kids love the hiking in the surrounding countryside. And the fact that in winter, you can be up in the ski slopes of the Sierra Nevadas in less than 2 hours.

The Unique Benefits of this Apartment

Make no mistake. This is a family home, not a holiday retreat. Clients frequently comment that the spaces are generous beyond what the photographs suggest.
