On pristine Nowland Lake, just a few minutes from downtown Charlevoix, and located in an isolated valley, our cottage is perfect for couples or young families. 600 feet of frontage includes a sandy beach, 2 docks, and plenty of room to stroll around or play. You will enjoy a quiet respite from the busy pace of downtown Charlevoix. Fishing, kayaking, paddle boating, and viewing wildlife (turkey, deer, mink, beaver, eagles, and loons) are the main occupations of relaxing at Nowland Lake. The western view from the cottage provides gorgeous sunset shows and amazingly dark starry nights. Take a one mile stroll up the road and buy fresh produce from Kitely Farm, or take a 7 minute drive into Charlevoix for shopping, dining, festivals, bike rentals, boat rentals, and all kinds of resort town fun. Petoskey, Bay harbor, Harbor Springs, Boyne Mountain, and Traverse City are all within a one hour drive.
Our cottage is part of a condominium, (10 separate cottages facing west toward the lake), with unobstructed western views and 600 feet of direct frontage on the lake. Nearly all owners are "weekenders", so it's usually very quiet. There are several fire pits available, (we supply all the wood) and a charcoal grill for your personal use. There are not many homes on the lake, so it is very quiet.
We purchased the cottage in 2003, and the interior reflects the needs of a young family, with tile floors throughout, comfortable furniture, and a bedroom with a new (Fall 2008) queen size mattress. Care has been taken to provide an environment that is more safe for people with asthma and allergies. A shared washing machine and dryer are available for your complimentary use in a separate building.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2003
Born and raised in Michigan, I enjoy my summers in the "Charlevoix the Beautiful". When I can train, I run marathons with my sister. I am married to my first (and last) husband, we have four kids, and one very strange cat named Grace Kelly.
Why the Owner Chose Charlevoix
With four young children and a hectic schedule, my husband and I decided to slow down and enjoy our family more. We looked all over for a vacation cottage that was close to Lansing, but fell in love with Charlevoix, and especially Nowland Lake. We bought the only house that was for sale there, and our lives quickly changed for the better. Now we own a larger home just down the road (the kids grew really fast!), and really enjoy hosting our guests at our happy cottage.
The Unique Benefits of this Cottage
It's one of the few places where even though downtown is close, you feel secluded. This year we've seen eagles frequently, flying overhead and fishing the lake. The loons are truly unique, and you'll never forget the beautiful and eerie sounds they make at night. Of course you'll also find Petoskey stones all over the place. Because we're in a valley, far from highways, it's really quiet, and there's no light pollution, so we enjoy a night sky like no other.

It doesn't get better than this!

Our family has used VRBO to find vacation homes in Florida, Colorado and Michigan over the years but we have always stuck to locations receiving numerous positive reviews. When searching the Charlevoix area listings we found this site, but...no reviews. The description sounded perfect so we threw caution to the wind, took a chance and were greatly rewarded. We could not have been happier with the location, the cottage, the lake and the owners. The cottage is spacious and meticulously clean. The tile floors remove any possibility of mustiness we've experienced in other cottages. Nowland Lake is as peaceful as it is beautiful. The lake is small enough that the surf does not get whipped up by winds which makes it perfect gliding for kayaks. The cottage is a short 10 minute drive (if that) to Charlevoix but is secluded enough that the night sky is not affected by the city lights. We had several clear nights for star gazing and watching the Perseid meteors during our stay. Hearing the loons calling on the lake was another treat. Biking is easy around the cottages since there is not much traffic. But with the lake being located in a valley you'll find a good size hill no matter which direction you go. The Little Traverse Wheelway bike trail will take you from Charlevoix all the way to Harbor Springs if you're a serious biker. Or there is a roadside scenic turnout just North of Charlevoix that is a good place to park and get on the bikes for awhile. Charlevoix, Harbor Springs and Boyne City are all short drives and provide countless activities. On previous trips to the area we had enjoyed Petosky State Park's beach but this year took the Ironton Ferry (just 3 miles East of the cottage) across the lake and drove to Young's State Park at Boyne City. This instantly became our new favorite Michigan beach. The zip line tour at Boyne Mountain includes a ski lift ride to the top of the "mountain" and you then zig-zag your way back to the bottom by way of 10 different zip lines. Or you can do individual zip lines if you don't want the full tour. If you make it to Harbor Springs be sure to save time for lunch at the deli hidden inside Gurney's Liquor store. Be sure to order the secret Gurney deli sauce. You'll never eat at Subway again. A trip to Charlevoix should include watching the draw bridge, ice cream at Murdick's Fudge, and in the evening check out the fountain by the marina. The waters are choreographed with music and colored lights. Thanks for a fantastic week!
