Location: Todi, Umbria, Italy, Europe (Viepri, small hamlet in countryside 8 miles from Todi)

Accommodations:  Tower, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths (Sleeps 2-7)

La Torre Antica is a charming, lovingly restored Umbrian tower dating back to 1390 situated in the hamlet of Viepri just 13km from Todi. The village of Massa Martana is five miles away and you'll find bars, a pharmacy, supermarkets. The Tower can be rented as a whole (seven people) or you can rent one of the two independent apartments (one with terrace). A real haven of peace surrounded by beautiful countryside.

La Torre Antica is a prime example of a medieval tower and quietly overlooks the countryside and valley. Its unusual structure was built onto the ancient gate and walls of the village, above a small 16th century church, along the medieval walls dating back to the 14th century. The tower's windows and terrace overlook the countryside and small hamlet of approximately 200 homes, where time seems to have stood still. The architecture is stunning - medieval stone with original ceramic floors. The owner has personally restored the whole tower and divided it into two units with independent entrances (sleeping two and five respectively) but they can be unified by opening a centuries old door.

The atmosphere is warm and inviting and much of the furniture antique. Original 17th century beams throughout. Stone walls keep the property cool throughout the summer. The whole tower is spread out over 4 floors with various fireplaces and top quality bathrooms throughout. All windows have wonderful views over the countryside. A cook who lives nearby can come a cook for a modest sum. Website available but in the process of being re-designed.

Whole Tower rental - the Tower is ideal for a group of friends who can use it as separate flats thereby maintaining privacy or as a complete living area by opening a connecting door. It has 3 double bedrooms and an armchair on the landing which doubles as a sofa bed. There are a total of 2 bathrooms (one with shower and one with bath) and cloakroom on the landing. Also ideal for a family but those with small children should be aware that being a medieval tower, the stairs are quite steep.

The Tower’s one bedroom flat is a perfect romantic hideaway for a couple on the ground floor. The entrance is on the ground floor and opens up into the kitchen with dining table and living area with fireplace and armchairs. The kitchen leads to the balcony where you can dine al fresco whilst admiring the local countryside and hamlet. A stairwell leads up to the bedroom with its own characteristic bathroom with shower and stone alcove.

The two bedroom apartment (la torre) also has an independent entrance and opens up to the kitchen area with its fireplace, on the right is the gorgeous medieval dining room with great views. A flight of stairs leads to the main bedroom and landing, on this landing is a small cloakroom (only toilet) and armchair than turns into a sofa bed for one. The main bathroom with full bath tub is on the third floor and takes up this floor. The second double bedroom is on the fourth floor with greats views over the countryside. Not suitable for those with mobility problems.

Viepri is a tiny hamlet in the Umbrian countryside just 8 miles south of Todi (15 minute drive) and 5 miles from Massa Martana a nearby walled town which is the toast of historians. There are shops, butchers, chemists etc in this town. Todi is ideally situated in the heart of the rolling hills of Umbria, which are covered with olive groves, fields of nodding sunflowers and vineyards. Nearest village with grocers is Montecchio di Giano 5 kilometres away.

Conveniently situated for sightseeing, Todi is equal distance from Umbria’s major hill towns – 50 minutes away are the towns of Assisi, Spoleto, Orvieto and Perugia. Rome airport is 90 minutes away and the airport of Perugia 50 minutes away with ryanair flights.
Todi sits right at the heart of Umbria, one of Italy’s most charming regions. It remains popular due to its accessibility to E45 which leads to the Autostrada del Sole. The countryside around Todi is an area that is hailed as one of Italy’s most livable due to the beauty of its undulating hills and the authenticity of its culture and cuisine.

    • When my wife and I, and our son and granddaughter, first saw the Viepri Tower in person we thought we were in the midst of a stage set, and wondered if they would strike the set at midnight. But it and its surroundings were still there in all their fantasy beauty for our whole week. Inside was comfortable, well-equipped, restored with great taste, even with artistry in all the little touches. The location was perfect for exploring the extraordinary Umbrian hill towns. We spent whole days in Todi, Orvieto, Spoleto, Assissi, Perugia, and a wonderful day just driving about and making our own discoveries. We ate at least one meal each day in our beautiful tower "home" and ended up proud indeed that even old folks like us could still live an adventure--comfortably! • Staying in Viepri in this beautifully and authenically restored apartment was a high point in our 3 week trip to Italy. (We stayed in the combination of first floor kitchen/dining & living room/outdoor terrace with second floor bedroom, for 3 nights.) Roberto Nizzo was very gracious and, on our arrival, met us several hours earlier than planned to accomodate us (interrupting his work day). A few details: Everything worked well, the stove, hot water, etc., the premises were clean, the kitchen was equipped with everything we needed to cook, and the kitchen and bathroom in particular were tiled beautifully! The village where the tower is located gave us a pleasant taste of rural Italian life. My only regret is that we didn't speak Italian and would have loved to communicate beyond "Buon giorno" with the friendly residents (we had tried to take a class but it was cancelled). While making arrangements to stay at the apartment, Louise always replied promptly and thoroughly to any of our questions, so we felt no anxiety about our arrangements. I would love to return there someday!

    • Not only was the this a wonderful and cozy place to stay, but Roberto made us feel right at home. A car is a must, but the train is nearby for a day-trip to Perugia or Deruta, and the driving through Umbria is lovely. Bringing home fresh produce, cheese and wine from the day's adventure to cook in the fantastic kitchen helped make our stay even more affordable. We highly recommend Roberto's tower for comfort, convenience and charm!

    • We rented Roberto's tower for a week at the end of March 2008. Our group included our family with two boys ages 9 and 14, and another couple. Our friends took the downstairs apartment and we had the upper levels. There was plenty of privacy, but there were also cozy common areas in which to spend time together in front of the fireplace. The tower's medieval atmosphere was charming and comfortable, and the tiny village of Viepri was delightful. The renovation work that Roberto has done is truly lovely and tasteful, it is even more beautiful than it looks in the pictures. Communication was very easy by e-mail with Louise who is fluent in English, and responded to all our queries right away. If you are looking for a wonderful experience in Italy, I can highly recommend this rental!

If you plan on spending any time in the Umbria region of Italy (which I recommend as highly as I do Tuscany!) and you're looking for a B&B or rental apartment that is centrally located then Torre Antica is it! My wife & I travel somewhere new every year and this year was Italy. So we've become pretty savvy B&B hunters and we were astounded at the quality of this new B&B in Viepri just north of Massa Martana in the Perugia area of Umbria. Roberto Nicco has spent the last 10 years gutting and renovating the interior of an old chapel and its tower. Each floor is its own creation, with a bedroom on the top-most floor in which we stayed. There is a small kitchen area that came in very handy. The taste in decorating was impeccable. Folks, you don't find places like this every day. We spent three wonderful days exploring Umbria from this amazing old place. Some basic info is available at their website:(-)
