Our house, Tzan Cruz, is on a lakeside cliff near Santa Cruz La Laguna. In the local Mayan language, the word "Tzan" means nose, which the cliff resembles as it juts into the lake. The location gives us a unique panoramic view across from the 9,000 ft. volcano's San Pedro, Toliman and Atitlán.
The available unit is 1,300 square feet (120 square meters) and features one bedroom; a living room with a fireplace; a built-in, indoor/outdoor ''turkish bed''; a complete kitchen, and a spacious bathroom. Each room has a spectacular view.
The apartment has all the modern amenities including refrigerator, gas stove and free wireless internet. There is access to three acres of secluded gardens and terraces, plus a private dock. Cabinets are crafted from indigenous, exotic woods and handmade tiles round off the interior. The beds have orthopedic mattresses and extra beds can be provided. A maid and caretaker are also available.
Santa Cruz is one of the few places on the lake accessible only by boat. (Public launches come every half-hour.) There are no cars. However, there are restaurants within a 15 minute walk. But most of all you're on the edge of this extraordinary lake at an altitude of 5,200 feet. If ever there was a place to use the phrase a picture is worth 1,000 words, it would be Lake Atitlán. Some say it's the most beautiful lake in the world. But see for yourself. We'll let the photos tell the story.
You can go there with Goggle Earth at: 14 44.1117' N, 91 12.4813' W
The price is: $100/day or $650/week. (An upstairs unit is also occasionally available.)
