With expansive views of the Russian River, graceful hills and the Coast Range Mountains, Casa Lucia enjoys a beautiful, sunny setting with easy river access for kayaking, canoing and swimming. Between the house and the river is a meadow with plenty of room to set up the net and play volleyball and badminton, toss the Frisbee or play baseball. A wrap-around deck is the perfect place to watch the mist floating on the river in the early morning and for outdoor dining later in the day. Throughout the day you’ll see Osprey, Canadian Geese, Cormorants, Blue Heron and the cows and sheep as they graze their way up and down the hills. At least 8 varieties of ducks can be seen bobbing on the river. Keep the binoculars near for the occasional visit by a pair of harbor seals who sometimes travel up from the nursery at the mouth of the river and you’ll want to get a good look at their puppy dog faces. A nighttime soak in the hot tub provides a front row seat for stargazing and the massage jets stimulate conversation and relaxation. Most people never want to leave this river house, but just sit, watch and enjoy home cooking from the charming, well-equipped kitchen along with a good local wine.
In the morning, breathe the fresh country air on a walk to the local bakery and enjoy pastries made in the wood-fired oven along with a perfect cup of coffee (they roast it right there in the shop). Duncans Mills is ideally situated on the river, only ten minutes from the resort town of Guerneville and in the other direction, ten minutes from the ocean beaches. It was named for the sawmills that once cut timber to build and re-build San Francisco after the 1906 Earthquake. It was the northern terminus of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad and the old Victorian station is still looking good as it approaches its 130th birthday. The turn of the century buildings have been lovingly cared for and provide a glimpse of small-town life 100 years ago. The town is well-known for its art galleries and restaurants.
If the urge to explore arises, you can hit the road and cruise along the river, past vineyards and through redwood forests. A few miles to the west are the ocean beaches and the rugged Sonoma Coast, to the east are the charming tasting rooms on the undiscovered Sonoma Wine Trail. You can pause in picturesque towns, and stroll through parks of giant redwoods that rival the worlds tallest trees. Dozens of food emporiums serve creative dishes with local produce and seafood. Unique shops feature handmade goods as well as coastal and redwood curios.
