Accommodations: House, 3 Bedrooms + No additional sleeping rooms avail, 3 Baths (Sleeps 6-8)
Keywords: Lake House
This breathtaking Lake Michigan blufftop home overlooks both Leelanau County in the distance and Old Mission Peninsula in Traverse City! It is situated halfway between Charlevoix and Traverse City, 8 miles north of the quaint harbor town of Elk Rapids. Wonderful restaurants abound nearby, both in the Village of Elk Rapids and alsoto the east, at The Rowe Inn, an award-winning gourmet restaurant just a beautiful drive away through the northern Michigan countryside!
This completely remodeled 3-level house is in a very private, wooded setting. There is no road noise here! With over 2600 square feet on three windowed levels, your family can spread out and feel all of the comforts of home. The downstairs has a family room, with sliding glass doors to the outside, a queen-sized sofa bed, and adjacent bathroom/shower, so it makes for an additional private sleeping area. The main floor has a queen sized bedroom, adjacent bath, office, beautifully updated and modern kitchen (dual convection oven and Jenn-air range), open living room and dining area, plus a sunroom off the kitchen! On this level, there is also a large deck off the 16-foot sliding glass doors across the living room looking out onto the beautiful Lake Michigan waters! Upstairs, there is a king-sized master bedroom on the lakeside, where you can lie in bed at night and listen to the waves lap the shore below, a large guest room with twin beds, and third bathroom/shower.
There is a nice sandy beach, with a large deck down the steps to the beach. There is also a firepit beachside for lakeside fires/gatherings!
This is a true "northern woods getaway!" Several golf courses are nearby (A-ga-ming is the closest), and there are plenty of area attractions to visit, but you can also choose to stay all day and relax at this peaceful retreat on the beach, ending the day with a beautiful sunset over the lake in the evening!

Why the Owner Chose Elk Rapids
I had spent summer vacations at my grandparents' lodge in the Upper Peninsula. I spent 5 summers traveling the highways and byways of northern Michigan and the UP looking for just the right spot for my own summer getaway. I almost purchased a place in the Les Cheneaux Islands, but all of the ingredients didn't seem right (there were no cappucino cafes nearby ;-). I drove up and down the farmland roads along Lake Michigan in the lower Peninsula, hoping to find something closer to home (which was Traverse City then), when on a Labor Day weekend I followed one more "for sale" sign down a dirt driveway. I snuck up around the house and was spellbound by the views! The rest is history, as they say!!!
The Unique Benefits at this House
I have already mentioned many of the things that attract/ed me to this home and location. The troubles of the world seem far away when I am here. I do have wifi, and I can take my work with me when I stay there. I oftentimes get more work done in this setting than when I'm interrupted in the office all day! :-)
There is absolutely no noise (highway or otherwise). I have awakened in the middle of the night and seen the moon out over the water. I can lie in bed and hear the waves lapping the shore and the wind in the pine trees. What can I say? It's my "bliss"....
Owner's Map of Elk Rapids
Hi,
This is Sue, and I bought Mission View Cottage several years ago for my up north getaway. I had been looking all over northern Michigan for my perfect "up north" retreat, reminiscent of our family's UP getaways when I was young. It was an older chalet style house, and I updated it with new bathrooms and kitchen, bright colors, and cottagey furnishings. It is a peaceful oasis in the north woods, surrounded by trees. It is very private, and it sits on top of a bluff overlooking the lake, with breathtaking views.
I can spend days there and not go anywhere! Each window you look out of offers a snapshot of the surrounding pine trees, or the evergreens, or the water. Sunsets from the deck or from anywhere in the house are fabulous!
Elk Rapids is just a quick drive into town (8 miles) and is like going back in time, with an old-fashioned main street and movie theatre and quaint shops. I love the drive through the farmland and hills, and I take several "countryside" drives when I am there, just to go exploring, or to do out to dinner at some of the countryside restaurants nearby. The Rowe Inn is a favorite for fine dining! Charlevoix is just a 25 minute drive north, and I love to go there, as well!
When I'm home, I love long walks along the road or on the beach up and down the lake.
I hope you enjoy my home as much as I do!

Hello Sue, We very much enjoyed our time at your Birchview home this past week. It’s a nice place, the view is spectacular and the location was just perfect. Thanks again for allowing us to rent your place. We’ve been vacationing in the Elk Rapids area since the late 70s and really enjoyed our time this year. Attached is a photo taken from the top deck on our final night. A typically beautiful sunset. If it’s still available next year, we would like to rent it for a week in July.

"Listening to the waves lapping on the shore was just a delight, and the views were absolutely spectacular! The Mission View cottage is more like a large house that is nestled on a bluff on the East Bay; plenty of room and privacy. The beach was enjoyable, and swimming out to the sandbar was my kids' favorite moment of the week. We enjoyed the moonlight over the water and roasting marshmallows in the firepit right on the beach. The neighbors were real nice as well. We enjoyed long jogs along the quiet road and sleeping in. I would highly recommend this vacation property! Thank you again for saving our vacation. It means more to me, my husband (and children) than you will ever realize" Rachel Delaurier and family

Sue, Just wanted to let you know that we had a great time at your cottage and really enjoyed the stay. The view was super, it made me catch my breath when I came up the stairs, turned the corner and saw the lake. A very peaceful trip and yes Bargy's pies where very good, we even brought one home. Take care and thanks once again. Reyne Salacain

Subj: Cottage 2004 Date: 7/16/2003 6:23:56 PM Eastern Standard Time Sue, We had a great time again this year, in spite of some rain the last couple of days. Please extend our compliments to the cleaning lady. She had the cottage in tip-top condition when we arrived early. She's a gem! The place was absolutely spotless. We'd like to reserve July 3rd through July 10th, next year. Please keep our deposit and let us know if that's ok. Thanks. Betty

ANOTHER PAST EMAIL: Subj: THANK YOU! Date: 10/21/2002 9:49:08 PM Eastern Standard Time Hello Sue! I just wanted to drop you a quick line to thank you SO VERY MUCH for allowing us the supreme pleasure of experiencing your exquisite home. And what an experience it was! The house was impeccable and the view breathtakingly gorgeous! The weather was quite windy and cold, but refreshingly so. A few snowflakes flew. Dinner at the Elk River Inn was delicious....I took your suggestion on the whitefish parmesan and it was melt in your mouth delectable! WOW! The sound of the rushing waves against the shore, the site of the gulls, walking along the beach collecting shells, the wall of windows, the trees in all their splendor.....we even saw a HUGE double rainbow over the water! What a beautiful sight! Took a picture from the top deck and will be sure to send it to you if it should turn out. I cannot say it enough, Sue....thank you, thank you, thank you! Sincerely, Karen
