Come experience the magic of Alone Mill! Canoe, bike, hike or just hang out by the creek!

We are a 15 minute (6 mile) drive from Lexington, Virginia, home to Washington & Lee University, Virginia Military Institute and the Virginia Horse Center. Rockbridge County Virginia is home to the Maury River, the only river in Virginia that begins & ends in the same county. Spring, summer and fall are great times for running the whitewater in Goshen Pass or tubing the flat water into Lexington. Come to the country where you can stay up late, dazzled by the stars and the Milky Way.

In the late fall & winter, enjoy our cozy cabin and a game of pool. After dark in June and July, the lightning-bug display is amazing every night! Later in the summer and fall, the tree frogs and cicadas fill the air with their songs. The cabin is right on a popular (and challenging) biking route.

The School House is located within 300 yards of a river access point locally known as Alone Mill. Upstream is my personal favorite stretch of canoeing on the Maury, it's a peaceful 5 hour ride in slow water and can be as fast as 2 hours when the river is up! You can put in at Goshen or Rockbridge Baths and walk home from the take-out.

If you're more interested in a bubbling stream, Alone Mill Creek passes within 50 feet of the front door!

Rockbridge County also has thousands of acres of National Forest and State-managed land for hunting and hiking in the mountains. The cabin is within about 6 miles of access at Goshen Pass and other spots are equally close.

Other activities at the School House include a pool table, ping pong, basketball goal and badmitton set. The yard is large and flat, perfect for a football game, and the driveway is flat also, good for the little kids to practice bike riding.

A 1 mile walk will take you to weekend wine tasting at Lexington Valley Vineyard, one of several vineyards in the county.

My sister and I like to meet up in the Lexington area since it is a half way meet up place. This was our first visit in the summer months and we wanted a place that our 4 boys could enjoy. The house is large enough that we weren't stepping on each other and great for hide and go seek. Our parents joined us for two of the nights and having the second bathroom was nice for them to use. The den is off to the side so when we were cooking the kids were out of our way which is nice. I had a two year old and having a booster seat there was very thoughtful and one less thing for us to bring. What impressed me the most was how clean the place was. That is very important to me and I could tell how much pride the owners took in their rental. The yard is huge, washer and dryer is plus with kids, eating outside was great, beds were comfy and room on the floor for a blow up mattress. We only stayed in the walk in section of the river. A little too scary with such young kids 2-9 years old. Plus it rained one night and the current had picked up. We will be back yearly for sure. A VRBO must! PS. If you do one thing in the area go to the Safari Park....amazing! Ride the wagon for sure.

Recommended for: Families with young children.

Owner response: Thanks! We think the Schoolhouse is a great family hang-out & we work hard to keep it clean & welcoming! Look forward to your return.

We are about to end a fabulous week here at Alone Mill Schoolhouse. It was a last minute vacation choice and we couldn't be happier. The cabin met all of our family's requirements: quiet, clean, comfortable, adequate cooking facilities, laundry facilities, close to outdoor activities, and best of all, we could bring our dog. The cabin has 2 TVs but we didn't even use them; we were too busy enjoying every minute of this area. We have 2 teenage boys, who can get bored very easily, but they were not bored for a minute. When they weren't kayaking in the river, they were playing Frisbee in the yard or riding bikes, or walking trails. At night we would play pool, read, or played cards. The Maury River is absolutely beautiful. We tried to get a coupe kayak trips in a day. We usually took the shorter trip but the longer one from Rockbridge Baths was spectacular. We also recommend a nice walk down Whiteside Drive. It is a nice long walk that goes alone a little creek and crosses over it several times. We were greeted by the cutest herd of cows and a few little calves. As far as the cabin is concerned, there is a lot to love here. It is furnished in some very cute and somewhat eclectic mix of furniture. I especially loved the antique and "shabby chic" pieces and the beautiful quilts. The paint on the walls is also a perfect choice of contemporary colors that are very calming. The linens are nice quality, nothing cheap or uncomfortable to use. The beds were also very comfortable. The bathrooms have high quality updated fixtures.... and we also noticed the wiring in the house is above average, with plenty of lighting and ceiling fans throughout. There are a few herbs growing outside that we used in our cooking. We will definitely be coming back here unless we buy our own little piece of heaven first.

Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, pet owners, romantic getaway, age 55+, adventure seekers.

Owner response: WOW! Thank you, we look forward to seeing you & all our return guests again.

Alone Mill Schoolhouse sits so far back from the road that it feels even more secluded than it actually is. I loved this part for our dogs. We sat on the porch and let them chase each other around the huge yard until they were exhausted, Everything about the cottage was just as it was listed on the website. The ambiance was great. The kitchen was supplied with everything that you could need. We went swimming in the Maury River which felt fantastic, it was a very hot day and the water is so clean and clear. It had been a long time since I swam in a real "ole swimming hole." There is nothing like it! The sounds of nature sing you to sleep at night and wake you up in the morning. We didn't do much site seeing but we did spend an afternoon in Lexington which is great for anyone who is a history buff. I would highly reccomend Cafe' Michel in Lexington for an evening out. We spent most of our time just lounging around the cabin, catching up (we hadn't seen each other in awhile)and relaxing which is exactly what we wanted to do. Our dog liked it so much there that he went under the back deck and wouldn't come out when we were ready to leave! We spent a week in July 2009. I hope to spend a few days again sometime this summer.

                      Year Purchased: 2007

About the owner: I have lived in Rockbridge County, VA since 1990. While I attended W&L, my friends & I often drove around the county. I always loved driving through Alone Mill when we were going to Goshen Pass; I knew there was special magic in this place. It's peaceful & the stars are brighter than most.

                      Why the Owner Chose Lexington:
My partner bought a house at Alone Mill in 1998 & when the Schoolhouse became available in 2007, I jumped at the opportunity. The Maury River here is perfect for canoeing, tubing, or just lounging in a chair at the edge of the water! Anyone who likes to spend time outdoors loves Alone Mill.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
Fresh water recreation - fishing, canoeing, boating, tubing - and plenty to do inside or in Lexington area if the weather isn't perfect. Ample space in the cabin for a large group to gather and enjoy time together.
