2008 Rates + Big Lake & Mountain Views at "Fernleaf Cottage"
Year Purchased: 2007
Why the Owner Chose Hiawassee
"Fernleaf Cottage" was actually bought as our future retirement spot. Although we do love our cabin Mike and I both grew up around the Great Lakes and couldn't see ourselves without a water view when we truly do retire to the porch! Being a Realtor I always have my eye out for properties that are a great value, with a great location and view! There was just something about this property that grabbed me the second I walked in and I knew that we had to have it in our future.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage
While you are, literally, only 2 or 3 minutes to the marina, restaurants, the movies, shopping and town when you are on that back porch you feel like light years from civilization! That's what so many of our guests have said that one of them wants to relax, read and hang out while the other wants to go, go, go... NOW! Everything is so close they can do both but get back together on a moments notice, AND, when you are so relaxed that you forgot the hamburger buns, you're out and back in no time at all! Plus, the cottage is very cozy as it was decorated for kick back enjoyment but NOT from yard sales!
Owner's Map of Hiawassee
In 1990 we built our "dream cabin" in Hayesville, NC and drove north from Atlanta almost every weekend until our full time move the summer of 2001. Leaving the craziness of the city, but staying within easy driving range of its energy, turned out to be the perfect move for us. With so many friends visiting and wanting a "piece of quiet" themselves, it was on to real estate in 2002 where I spend most of my time today... Except when Mike and I are at home, still loving our "dream cabin."

This property was exactly as described. The pictures really don't do it justice. This is a real "cottage" unlike all the other advertised cabins. The decor was charming, the fireplace cozy and the screened in porch begged for a relaxing evening with family. Everything was orderly and clean. We had a problem with one TV (probably our fault) and Shelagh responded within 10 minutes to make sure it worked properly. My sister from Chicago and niece from Kansas were delighted with our selection for our Fall visit. We ventured out everyday in a different direction and found antique shops, orchards, and plenty of shopping. I would most certainly recommed this property to anyone wanting a quiet and beautiful place to get away and relax. I certainly hope we can return again next year. Thank you Shelagh for sharing your cottage with us.
Owner response:And thank YOU for choosing it and THEN taking the time to tell others! We don't often meet our guests as we try to offer the total privacy most of us yearn for when vacationing but the TV allowed me to "see" the cottage in action with happy guests enjoying what we strive hard to provide, a clean and comfortable respite! So, thank you for making it worth the effort and please DO come back!

We had a wonderful stay at the Fernleaf Cottage. The location is great, just outside of Hiawasee. The view of lake Chatuge with the mountains in the back ground is very nice. The cottage is "very clean", fully furnished, and the decortations give you a feeling of being at the lake. Fernleaf has everything you need for a cozy getaway. We will definitely come back again!!
Owner response:And we would love to have you back again! Thank you for taking such great care of the cottage!

The Fernleaf Cottage is a wonderful place for a great weekend. My husband and I could not be more pleased with our weekend! Thank you so much for providing a wonderful and comfortable home. The weekend was wonderful minus a little bit of rain. The cottage was ultra convenient to everything that we needed, mostly the Ridges Marina. It was very clean and had everything that I could possible need in the kitchen.
Owner response:We have OFFICIALLY now had: An engagement, a wedding party, a 50th anniversary and now a 1st Anniversary celebration! Best wishes to all and please think of us for your next special event or simple get away!

We had a wonderful time in the "Enchanted Valley" and loved Fernleaf Cottage. So cozy, clean and comfortable. The cabin was so cute and the views were terrific. Just as you described, Shelagh. The pics on vrbo sold us and we loved sitting out on the screened porch and gazing at the mountains and lake. And you are so awesome! Very nice, friendly and helpful. We appreciate how you were so accessible and kept in touch and answered all our questions. Our little dog "Cutie", loved it too. So convienient to be able to go scouting around and leave her on the screened porch to commune with nature. She loved looking out and listening to the birds. We would definately recommend Fernleaf Cottage to our friends and family. To be such a small town, Hiawassee had some awesome restaurants. Loved eating at the Chop House, the food was outstanding. The Corner Cafe is a good place to eat breakfast. Kinda wish there wasn't a DQ in Hiawassee, took too many waffle bowl breaks. But it was vacation so we were a little bad. Went to Franklin antiquing one day and the drive up 64 East was unbelievably beautiful. It was about 10 am and the clouds were hanging low over the mountains and it just sent chills over me. I could look at that view everyday and never tire of it. We had lunch a a country cooking cafe in Franklin called Sunset and the food was fantastic. Everyone we ran into was so friendly and helpful. We met some interesting characters in the mountains too. Met 2 different gentlemen who had homes on the top of mountains who invited us up and we spent at least an hour with each one of them just talking. They were a wealth of information. People in the shops downtown Hiawassee were also very friendly and helpful. Visit Sunflower Gardens and Creations on Main Street. Catherine is so much fun to talk to and has a cute little place. Lake Chatuge is so beautiful we have started our search for a house so we can make it our home. Love the weather in the mountains and didn't miss the humidity of Birmingham a bit. Thanks for everything, Shelagh we plan to be back very soon!

Lake breezes, awesome views, comfortable porch, peaceful surroundings...Fernleaf Cottage is a sanctuary tucked on a ridge overlooking Lake Chatuge. We couldn't have had a more relaxing visit! The furnishings complete this cozy little hideaway. The night skies were incredible, and the morning sunrise equally stunning. This was a welcome respite from the distractions of the city. Thank you, Mike and Sheilagh, we enjoyed every minute!

You certainly do have one of the best rental cottages that we've rented! Very comfortable. Didn't need any A/C and the heat at night was a blessing. So many good restaurants, shops and artists. The people are so friendly and eager to share their knowledge. Thank you Shelagh for always being just a phone call away and for sharing all the wonderful treasures on your shelves. Great library!

Thank you for letting us stay at your cottage! We don't really need a lot of words to describe our little vacation: Breathtaking Views! Beautiful Weather! Lots of clean fresh air! Exhausting hikes! Picturesque waterfalls! Gorgeous little town! Cozy place - almost "feels like home!" There is so much more to see and do here that we will definitely have to come back some day!

Our time in your lovely cottage was way too brief but we do hope to return soon for a longer stay! The view is incredible and the peaceful, relaxing atmosphere was exactly what we needed! The location is also a huge plus for us and others who have kids. So peaceful yet convenient yo shopping, the theater, golf, etc. Also, the cottage is so well stocked with everything you need in the kitchen and we really appreciated all of the games and the great selection of reading material. Thank you for a wonderful relaxing weekend! We hope to return to your beautiful cottage soon!

If you are view people this is the perfect place to relax and enjoy beautiful lake and mountain views! Your are close to restaurants, stores and everything you need. The lovely furnishings, the cleaning crew - the cottage was immaculate when we arrived even with a short turnaround after previous guests. Our older golden retriever loved to sit out on the screened porch and stare out at the view. Staying in a vacation rental where you go thru the owners adds that personal touch. It was such a pleasure meeting and visiting with Shelagh. We have stayed in many locations but enjoyed Fernleaf the best.

Peace and calm at Fernleaf Cottage! Every fall we search for a place to retreat from the stresses of everyday cares, a place to relax and recharge before the holiday craziness and hectic activities before a new year begins. Fernleaf met all of the criteria ++. Sunlight dancing on brilliant leaves, birds flying overhead, azure blue skies and crisp autumn air created a wonderland retreat! Thank you!
