Breath-taking!

We visited the Bold Coast Oct 8-15th 2011 with a few maine goals; hike, eat lots of lobster, and see a moose. We accomplished everything but the moose sighting. The lobster right out of the harbor was fabulous, and the hiking trails were amazing. We didn't spend much time at the cottage because there were too many beautiful coastline trails to see. For those who like long hikes, the Bold Coast trail is only 3 miles down the road from the cottage to the parking lot. It's a 10 mile loop trail that is worth every blister you may aquire. It has a camping area if you wish to stop half way through and also a shorter loop for those who would like to see the bold coast via a 5 mile loop. If you are not a hiker, there is another trail a few miles beyond this one called the Boot Head Preserve. You do not need anything more than sneakers, and camera. The terrain is easy, boardwalks, steps, viewing platforms and endless moss covering the trail that is softer than carpet. It is our favorite trail ever-and we've hiked hundreds of miles. Beware though, you will not run into lots of tourist! It's the "hidden gem". Most of the trails around the cottage (say 30 minute drive max) offer the same great views that Acadia National Park has minus all the traffic and people. Campobello Island, Canada is also a favorite of ours. Several of the trails are handicapped accessible including one called Eagle Hill Bog that is made up of a 1 mile worth of boardwalk decking. Stop by Friars Head and look for the Eagles. Go to the north end of the island and visit the lighthouse but go during low tide for a special treat. Watch the seals play in the tidal flows at Mulholland Point/lighthouse. And visit Roosevelt's summer cottage while there too. We can't say enough good things about Cutler. The people were helpful and friendly, especially Wanda, the property manager. Jon, the owner was very accommodating and the cottage is cozy. Plenty of room for large or small families or just a couple's gettaway. Take a stroll down to the waterfalls aside of the house. Very peaceful. And the sunrise was amazing from the porch, kitchen, dining, living an bedrooms. Never got to see a sunset though cause we were always out hiking, seeing the local sites, or eating in Lubec or Machias. The house/kitchen is fully stocked and the having the washer/dryer means you can pack very light. We had lobster for breakfast, lunch, & dinner when we were stuck in on the rainy days. Superb!!

Perfect location for day touring

Dreamy, simply dreamy, waking up to fog over the meadow down to the cove, out to the ocean, an image like a great landscape painting. Fog horn from Little River Light was very soothing. House was very clean and well appointed, kitchen was equipped for real cooking. Caretaker Wanda was friendly and helpful but not intrusive. Location was perfect for making day excursions to many interesting places. For hikers, plan on making the entire loop along the coast of the Bold Coast Trail. Pack food and water and plan for several hours. Absolutely worth the effort. The other trails nearby are well worth the time, too. Again, take food and water and plan to take your time. Puffin tour to Machias Seal Island, when the puffins are nesting, is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for bird watchers. Puts out of Cutler Harbor, just down the road.It was nice to be able to stay at the cottage with our dog, who had a blast. If we plan to visit that area of Maine again, we will definitely stay at the Bold Coast Cottage. The house was very comfortable.

We had a wonderful time exploring this area. We loved the new trail at Norse Pond & Bog Brook Preserve, the Bold Coast Trails, and the Western Head. The cottage worked well for us - thank you very very much. P.S. If you like to hike check out the Maine Huts and Trails.

Just the ticket !

Wow ..... Bold Coast Cottage was more than we could have hoped for ! We do not care for the " tourist trap " and sterile accommodations many people think of as vacation. We like a place where we can kick back and relax or interact with local folks one day , and go on driving trips the next . We also love history and learning as we travel . Bold Coast Cottage was all of the above and more ! The cottage itself is a treasure ...... Take note of the worn doorway thresholds ...... And with caretaker Wanda's wonderful stories and information on the area ..... We were happy as clams ! Go to this place if you want seclusion and character ! We Love It ! Michael and Arnold

Culter Bold Coast Cottage

I give the physical location and the property-open fields with fantastic wrap around deck facing south with views of the ocean and the wooded hills an A+. The kitchen is large and spacious with large eat in area and is very , very well equipped for cooking - A+. The furniture/decor in the cottage is average - including curtains, tables etc is nothing fancy but functional. The upstairs bathroom including shower is small but functional. The downstairs master bathroom is large and adequate- functional not fancy. If you like hiking along the rugged Maine coast , biking, and sea kayaking this is your place. It is off the beaten track .The citizens of Culter are very welcoming . Owner very helpful . Property clean and well-maintained .

This was our second stay at the Cutler, Bold Coast Cottage. We returned for a second year in a row because we loved it the first time. The second stay was no different. All the ammenities were there as promised. Because of this we were able to travel light. Cutler is an amazing place to visit with its scenic views and wonderful, down-home people. The Bold Coast Cottage was a great place to stay to enjoy this as it is within walking distance to the harbor and has beautiful scenery of its own. The caretaker of the house makes sure you have everything you need and we just loved our stay.

Our introduction to Maine could not have been better

Bold Coast Cottage is set on a hill above a small bay around the point north from Cutler Harbor. The folks who keep it (and who are very close by) told us there was once a sawmill across the creek some 50 feet down a gentle hillside from the house, past an old apple tree, abundant wild flowers and blueberries everywhere. We arrived at twilight to find a young deer (or doe) grazing in the yard. Later in the week it reappeared under the apple tree out front. It and we actually stumbled on each other and the deer shot away. But not far. We walked out back and it posed for photographs. The cottage is very well maintained, clean, cozy, and comfortable. And very quiet at night. The road to and from Cutler, Maine Route 191, about a quarter mile back up Cove Road, is a route less travelled by day and basically deserted at night. Cutler a pretty town, best appreciated from Destiny Bay Road which runs along the south side of the harbour and leads to one of three excellent hiking trails in the area. Do them all for various experiences of the coast. For food, we dined at the Riverside in East Machias. The seafood was exquisite. The vegetables tasted like they were still in the ground when we were having our first drink. Highly recommended. Otherwise we cooked in the spacious kitchen. Our requisite lobsters were 2.25 pounds, right out of the livewell on a wharf just 15 minutes on foot from the place and, ultimately, delicious. The cottage comes with instructions on how to cook them. And if you can swing it, say the lobstermen, hold the table salt and try getting a pot of seawater to cook them in. We took in Campobello, the Machias farmer’s market, Eastport (the Tulip for bagels), Lubec, WEST Quoddy Head (the EASTERN-most point in America), Calais, the worlds most powerful radio station (VLF Cutler), Wild Blueberry World… And before we forget… Bold Coast Cottage also offers ythe sun and the stars. When not hiking or wandering around the counties we would sit on the front porch in the morning and tan. Each afternoon we’d return to catch the sun’s dying rays and to chat about the day passed. And after dinner come back out again to find a scene that looked as if someone had spray-painted the Milky Way, and the constellations on black velvet about three feet above our heads. Even without the Perseid meteor shower last week the night sky is phenomenal. We did NO work all week! Can’t say enough good things about the cottage. We’ll be back sometime.

A wonderful seaside escape!

Guest: Rachael (Madison, Wisconsin)
Date of Stay: 07/24/10 Review Submitted: 08/02/10

My husband and I celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary with a week at the Bold Coast cottage. It was our first trip to Maine and we wanted a more rural location (think opposite of the Bar Harbor scene) and this was perfect. A bit remote so planning for provisions was important, but that was exactly what we wanted in a rental. The house was beautifully furnished and there wasn't a single thing we wished for that wasn't supplied. The beds - with high quality linens - were very comfortable and we had plenty of room to relax and enjoy the spacious house and grounds. I like to cook, so having such a well equipped kitchen was a treat. The local caretaker was a gem and gave us great advice on things like how long it would take to get somewhere, the best routes to use and the hours for the local lobster pound where we got *HUGE* (over 3 pound) lobsters for a ridiculously low price (to us mid-westerners!!). The house sits on a cove called "Money Cove" ... we were wondering why it was called that, but our question was answered the night we got to enjoy watching a full moon rise over the ocean from the house's spacious deck. The reflection in the cove made it look like the water was a sea of coins! The views in all directions were stunning. The owners were very helpful and responsive when I made inquiries about the property and I would rent from them again if we ever spend more time in this area. I also recommend Sunrise Canoe and Kayak if you want to take a guided paddle or rent equipment for your stay. I had a half day kayaking trip with them that was the second best part of our trip (the anniversary was tops!). I hope it never happens for you, but during our stay, one member of our party had a medical emergency and I was concerned about the remoteness of the place and how long it would take to get help. I shouldn't have worried - we had EMTs on site within 10 minutes of my 911 call and we can attest to the professionalism and caring of the local medical services in nearby Machias. All in all - it was a fabulous vacation rental and I would go back again in a heartbeat!

Wonderful Vacation Spot, wonderful place

We spent an amazing week here in Cutler at the Mitchell home. We are 6 women, sisters and mothers and daughters, nieces and aunts, cousins all. What a special time we had. The house was wonderful and perfect for the 6 of us. Of particular importance was 2 bathrooms!!!!! If you are considering this unit to spend some vacation time, let me assure you that you will not be sorry. From this vantage point, we spent a day in Bangor at the casinos, three times we journeyed into Canada, taking the ferries and driving through New Brunswick, and a day-trip to Bar Harbor and the amazing Acadia Forest. We truly believe this to be one of the most amazing places we have spent our annual "sisters week". We saw deer grazing in the fog in the early mornings, and took the Cutler hike and saw otter swimming in the ocean. We went whale watching and saw 5 whales, both fin and mink, When you meet Wanda, and you will, you will know that Jon and Susan have left you in more than capable hands. Good luck to you and your families, and may you have as wonderful a time at the Bold Coast Cottage as did the 6 of us.
