Welcome to Boulder, Colorado...everything you want from a big city, yet it feels like a small town; world-class restaurants and shops, a major university, an abundance of cultural events, a plethora of year-round outdoor activities and lots of music from around the globe.

Minutes from downtown Boulder, our artist’s home is located within a quiet, historic residential district known as Mapleton Hill. "Susurro" - our sunny and light garden/walk-out apartment has a separate entrance and is part of our recently eco-remodeled home originally built in 1910. Our 800 sq. ft. apartment is colorful, eclectically furnished, with hot water baseboard heating, all domestic water filtered, cork floors, lots of light, antique cooking stove, custom trim, open layout - living room/dining room/kitchen, hand painted floor, and mosaic tiled bathroom floor. Our home is a “come and borrow a cup of organic sugar” kind of home.

"Susurro" is two blocks away from the foothills of the Rockies with great hiking trails, and the continental divide only a thirty-minute drive away. We are a 30 minute drive to Denver; 30 minute drive to Eldora Ski Resort, 45 minute drive to Rocky Mountain National Park, and 1.5-2.25 hour drive to Loveland, Winter Park, Breckenridge and Vail ski areas.

Boulder has year-round sunshine. The winter season usually brings brief snow storms followed by beautiful sunny days. It's not uncommon to have warm weather in the high 60s-70s in February and March. Late spring and summer offers warm days, wonderful thunderstorms and few airborne pests. Falls are warm with cool nights and some of the most amazing displays of light and color.

Well behaved dogs are welcome with an additional $100 deposit.

Why the Owner Chose Boulder

Boulder is a beautiful city with incredible outdoor activities and cultural events. We chose this neighborhood due to its proximity and convenience to both downtown Boulder and mountain trails. Marcela and I live in the 'orange house' on the property because we think this is the best neighborhood in Boulder. That being said we are available anytime while guaranteeing your privacy.

The Unique Benefits at this House

We feel incredibly privileged to live in this house and be able to ride our bikes, walk to nearby trails and cafes and enjoy the many and varied events and activities that Boulder offers. We love the sunshine that abounds in Colorado. Susurro is quiet, private and simultaneously centrally located. We invite you to experience the beauty and comfort first-hand!

Owner's Map of Boulder

Marcela Ot'alora G. is from Medellin, Colombia and is an artist and psychotherapist. Marcela considers Susurro to be an ongoing art Installation as well as the rest of the 'orange house'. Susurro means "a murmer" in Spanish. It is a custom from Colombia to name your home - hence Susurro. Bruce Poulter is a Rolfer, 'artist's slave' and musician - playing the mbira (thumb piano) from Zimbabwe.
We have two daughters - now in their final year of college - which makes us old (they think), young (we know)...
We purchased Susurro with the intent of remodeling it - but ended up completely rebuilding it from the foundation up. We were the architects, draftspeople, general contractor, electrician, plumber, interior designer, painters, etc - you get the drift and we are still married - happily.
We have totally enjoyed living here and meeting all the interesting people who have stayed here from different parts of the world.

Great place for a visit to Boulder

Guest: dreaming of many boulder returns (Milwaukee, WI)
Date of Stay: 09/24/09 Review Submitted: 09/29/09

I rented this apartment with a couple friends for a girls' weekend in Boulder. The apartment was great. Colorful, clean, and comfortable. An easy walk to downtown. And dealing with the owner was always smooth and efficient. I would highly reccomend this rental.

Christmas Gathering

Guest: Doug and Kathy (Rochester, MN)
Date of Stay: 12/22/10 Review Submitted: 01/15/11

We enjoyed our stay over Christmas at this eclectic-decorated apartment very much. It was clean, well-maintained, and the owner, Bruce, was very helpful in answering questions in a timely fashion. The book and CD selection was surprising--it's not often when staying at B&B's or rentals that you find books and music that match your taste or interest! The kitchen was adequately-equipped, although we only used it for breakfast. I would recommend this property to friends and relatives. Fun art work everywhere! Restaurants? Jill's for Christmas dinner was amazing! And the Mexican restaurant in Louisville was delicious.

Dissappointing

Guest: Chris (Dublin, Ireland)
Date of Stay: 11/12/10 Review Submitted: 12/22/10

Our concern about this apartment was the smell of gas when we lit the stove. The owner did check it on request and assured us it was safe but our experience was still unpleasant and disquieting. We had to open the window every time we used the stove. The living room had a shabby feel. THe floor tiles were old and shabby. The bedrooms and bathroom were better. The ad says it sleeps six. Where? We thought the apartment was poor value for money compared to other properties we have rented before in the same area.

Owner response:We appreciate the opportunity to reply to an unfavorable response in light of the previously 100% favorable experiences that our guests have had. We are required by the City of Boulder to be inspected semi-annually including all gas fired appliances - which we do. In the past, we have only had one other complaint with the 'smell' of gas that was also in the fall. Our apartment is a very well insulated apartment and that combined with the utility company adding a compound to natural gas to give it an odor - for safety - can create a smell of "gas". We check all gas connections when any tenant has a concern and have never found a leak to date. The gas lines were all replaced three years ago when we re-modeled. Having said this, we realize that it would be a good idea to install a venting fan to address this issue for the future. The floor tiles (true marbled linoleum and 100% cork) were also replaced three years ago. Sleeping - Our apartment has one bedroom with a a queen size bed and the other with a double bed. We also provide a single futon or a double air mattress for guests who request it. We always inform our guests that with more than four people accommodations will be tight. While we strive to provide a refuge for all our guests, unfortunately we do not always succeed.

We loved our stay at Susurro Sept 09. The apartment is tastefully appointed in bright colors and whimsy truly inspired by the artist's eye. The kitchen is well equipped, the living area a pleasure to relax in, and the bed we slept in exceptionally comfortable. The neighborhood is charming, with a touch of funky here and there, and reasonably close to town.

We spent August 2008 as guests at Susurro and can't say enough good things about the experience. Our two young children loved playing on the patio (especially the apples that fall from the nearby trees) and we all enjoyed the proximity to Pearl Street, bike rides, the park, and the fantastic rec center. The house is cozy and cute. Cell phones and wifi were spotty, but manageable. Great rental!

Owner response:Cell phone coverage is 'spotty' with some cell phone carriers due to Susurro's proximity to the mountains. This is due to Boulder residents being unwilling to approve the installation of a cell phone tower on a local mountain - and I agree with that choice. That being said reception can be found usually within and always on the sidewalk of Susurro, with cell phone coverage improving every year... Computer access is occurs by direct connection (CAT5e cables supplied) to high speed internet available in bedrooms, kitchen and living room.

Three of us stayed at Susurro for four nights in July (the futon which makes an extra bed is very comfortable!). Sussuro is clean, colourful, high-functioning and sweet. It is welcoming, vibrant and homey, in the perfect proportions. Mapleton is a funky area and our morning walks into town were always interesting and shady (in the hot weather). It took us less than 15 minutes to walk to town, which is a bonus in a place where parking is tight. We will return when seminars or conferences bring us to Boulder again.

We just savored a short 3-day stay at Susurro with our 2.5 year old grandson (who named it "my orange house") and it was altogether a perfect experience. There's a sense of privacy without isolation in this truly colorful FUN apartment. It almost had the eclectic feel of our favorite N. WI cabin from childhood, but with modern conveniences. (The old reclaimed gas stove is quaint, but works great!) The location is ideal: beautiful, historic and walkable neighborhood. Close to lovely N. Boulder park. Not far from Boulder creek trails and easy to get to restaurants & Whole Foods markets. Bruce & Marcela are lovely, but not obtrusive hosts and the artistic talent is evident everywhere. The little private garden patio just outside the door is quiet and peaceful and even provided great wildlife (and neighboring kitty-life) outdoors for wonderful grandson entertainment! We'll definitely seek out a reservation here again when in Boulder on our next trip. It was really like having our very own cottage.
