Boulder house description

Exciting News for 2014

We have updated Susurro by adding on site laundry facilities, new refrigerator with ice maker, freshly painted bedrooms, new light fixtures, freshly sealed colorful kitchen floor and more (new photos coming soon!). We think you will appreciate the improvements, making your stay more comfortable and convenient.

Welcome to Boulder, Colorado...everything you want from a big city, yet it feels like a small town; world-class restaurants and shops, a major university, an abundance of cultural events, a plethora of year-round outdoor activities and lots of music from around the globe.

Minutes from downtown Boulder, walking distance to excellent coffee and tea houses, restaurants, bakery, shopping, well equiped grocery store, trails and more. Our artist’s home is located within a quiet, historic residential district known as Mapleton Hill. 'Susurro' - our sunny and light, very private garden/walk-out apartment has a separate entrance and is part of our recently eco-remodeled home originally built in 1910. Our 750 sq. ft. apartment is colorful, eclectically furnished, with hot water baseboard heating, all domestic water filtered, cork floors, lots of light, antique cooking stove, custom trim, open layout, split level (with two steps) - living room/dining room/kitchen, hand painted floor, and mosaic tiled bathroom floor. Our home is a “come and borrow a cup of organic sugar” kind of home. Please note - Susurro is exceptionally well insulated however, we live upstairs, we are very quiet and we do not wear shoes inside our home. If you need total silence please reconsider - you will hear soft footsteps but never voices and in five years we have had only one complaint.

'Susurro' is two blocks away from the foothills of the Rockies with great hiking trails, and the continental divide only a thirty-minute drive away. We are a 30 minute drive to Denver; 30 minute drive to Eldora Ski Resort, 45 minute drive to Rocky Mountain National Park, and 1.5-2.25 hour drive to Loveland, Winter Park, Breckenridge and Vail ski areas.

Boulder has year-round sunshine. The winter season usually brings brief snow storms followed by beautiful sunny days. It's not uncommon to have warm weather in the high 60s-70s in February and March. Late spring and summer offers warm days, wonderful thunderstorms and few airborne pests. Falls are warm with cool nights and some of the most amazing displays of light and color.

Well behaved dogs are welcome.

I rented this apartment with a couple friends for a girls' weekend in Boulder. The apartment was great. Colorful, clean, and comfortable. An easy walk to downtown. And dealing with the owner was always smooth and efficient. I would highly reccomend this rental.

We, a family of three, stayed 7 weeks in Susurro during a work visit to NIST Boulder. It was perfect in all possible ways. The apartment has the right size, comfy beds, all necessary amenities, it is in walking distance to a shopping complex and to Pearl St, a SKIP bus stop (Broadway & North St) is only 5 min away, and a trailhead for hiking 5 min in the opposite direction. We did not need a car. It is totally quiet, no through traffic, there are birds and squirrels, we even saw mule deer in a neighbor's garden one morning. Bruce and Marcela have been fantastic, very respectful with their tenants, and at the same time extremely relaxed and helpful. There was no washer or dryer in place before we came, and when I explained that for our long stay this would be rather important, they installed them before we arrived. We also liked the artists atmosphere in and around the house; for people that expect everything to be right-angle and brand-new, it might not be so optimal. Regarding space, for three persons and such a long stay, the place is ideal, four persons would work just as well, more than four would only be recommendable for a shorter stay. We would always go back to Susurro!

Recommended for: Families with young children, sightseeing, tourists without a car.

Owner response: Dear Juergen, Giovanna and Pascal: Thank you for your kind words and specific feedback. It is important to us that people who actually stay in Susurro offer their experience of staying with us. We look forward to your return. Warmly, Bruce and Marcela

My friends and I stayed in the Susurro house for two nights last fall for a wedding. We were a short walk and cheap cab ride from Pearl St. where all the fun was happening. The rooms were a small mother-in-law type unit attachment under the main house. We had privacy, our own kitchen, and could use basic house amenities. The best part about the house was the time, love, and creativity put into decorating and customizing every little detail inside and out. The house gave me many wonderful ideas of how to make my own house special someday and how to make people smile when they walk by or come over to visit. It was a colorful burst of inspiration. I will definitely come again in the future!

Susurro, besides having a great name, is a perfect little apartment on Mapleton Hill, walking distance to downtown and hiking. We loved how creative the house and yard were and the hosts were very accommodating. LOVE that a nice place in Boulder allows pets! We'll definitely be back!

Our family really enjoyed the funky comfort of Susurro's ground floor suite! There was plenty of room for us and our two young kids - hanging out in the living room and watching the afternoon thunderstorms above Mt Sanitas was a treat! The kitchen is functional (big fridge is key!) and BBQs on the patio were a blast. The location was perfect - walking distance from great hiking, Pearl Street, and even the grocery store! We walked the kids to the nearby park every day and loved seeing all the unique houses in that old neighborhood. Bruce and Marcella were very welcoming and great with our kids, even with all the noise! Hopefully Susurro survived the recent floods - we hope to return for another stay! My only regret is not depositing a wish in one of "Madonna's" bottles!

Our stay was at the time of the Bolder Boulder which made the location perfect! In light of the negative comments the one reviewer made, we felt quite the opposite. We were concerned with disturbing the owners in their home above us! We were careful to leave everything in excellent condition knowing their special artsy value to the owners. If we had wanted a modern place with all the fancy fixings, we would have looked for that and paid for that. .dearly, I'm sure!!! What we found at Susurro was what we feel reflects the Boulder relaxed atmosphere!! As the owner stated, everyone has different expectations when staying somewhere. Ours were pleasantly and greatly met and exceeded. Please enjoy your stay!!

I wanted to leave this review because we felt unsure about the property due to the harsh review below. To sum up: we really enjoyed our stay. Yes, the apartment is eclectic, but in a good way. The managers are clearly artists who wanted to share their tastes with their renters. We thought the accommodations were artsy and fun, and they totally contributed to the laid-back vibe of Susurro AND the town of Boulder. The apartment is well furnished and stocked so that you won't have to bring any utensils or pots and pans from home. As for noise, yes, you can hear footsteps every now and then from above. But it is definitely NOT enough to bother anyone. When the managers had to make a loud noise using a saw outside, they consulted with us first to see when we would be out of the apartment, so as to not bother us. In our opinion, this was very considerate and something they certainly didn't have to do. Lastly, the apartment is within walking distance of Pearl street and the mountains, so you really can't ask for more. My husband and I walked to Pearl street several times, and we also hiked the mountains behind the apartment. As I said before, the managers were very accommodating and did everything possible to make our stay wonderful. We never even saw them--they communicated via email or phone the entire time, which makes you feel like you are really secluded and not on their property. I can't say enough good things about this place. Don't listen to the bad reviews!

We also want people to feel that Susurro is theirs while staying here, hence our being 'invisible' while being attentive. We are glad you enjoyed your stay - thank you!

Susurro is very nicely located, artistic and full of charm. The beds were so comfortable, it was quiet and had everything we needed. Loved the old fashioned yet beautifully working gas stove. The location to Boulder is perfect as you are maybe a mile from Boulder proper, still in town and yet within a neighborhood.... our 1st choice when my Leo buddies and I travel. We highly recommend and would definitely return.

Our family of 5 had a wonderful stay in Boulder and we were able to enjoy walking to trails, Pearl Street and a park while staying in this clean and colorful apartment. The apartment was well-equipped; in a quiet neighborhood and with very respectful owners. Any questions or requests we had were answered promptly. Reserving from overseas was also no problem! We'd love to stay here again!

We felt right at home in this wonderful apartment. It's in a 'funky' Boulder house, in a great neighborhood. You can walk to Pearl Street, jog up to some mountain paths and easily hop a bus to campus. You could even walk to CU, but it's a good uphill hike! We (mom, dad, 2 kids) were here for 4 days, but we wish we could have stayed longer! We've been lucky enough to work overseas and travel a good bit. Honestly, this was one of our favorite home-away-from home places. Thank you!

                      Owner info

                      Year Purchased: 2004

About the owner: I am from Medellin, Colombia and am an artist and psychotherapist. I considers Susurro to be an ongoing art Installation as well as the rest of the 'orange house'. Susurro means 'a murmer' in Spanish. It is a custom from Colombia to name your home - hence Susurro. My partner is a bodyworker, 'artist's slave' and musician - playing the mbira (thumb piano) from Zimbabwe. We have two daughters - one just graduated from college and the other in her final year of college - which makes us old (they think), young (we know)... We purchased Susurro with the intent of remodeling it - but ended up completely rebuilding it from the foundation up. We were the architects, draftspeople, general contractor, electrician, plumber, interior designer, painters, etc - you get the drift and we are still married - happily. We have totally enjoyed living here and meeting all the interesting people who have stayed here from different parts of the world.

                      Why the Owner Chose Boulder:
Boulder is a beautiful city with incredible outdoor activities and cultural events. We chose this neighborhood due to its proximity and convenience to both downtown Boulder and mountain trails. We live in the 'orange house' on the property because we think this is the best neighborhood in Boulder. That being said we are available anytime while guaranteeing your privacy.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
We feel incredibly privileged to live in this house and be able to ride our bikes, walk to nearby trails and cafes and enjoy the many and varied events and activities that Boulder offers. We love the sunshine that abounds in Colorado. Susurro is quiet, private and simultaneously centrally located. We invite you to experience the beauty and comfort first-hand! We speak English and Spanish.
