Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2007

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area with my family. My day job is as a project manager in the biotech industry, and I've noticed that some of the same skills that make this job rewarding for me - customer focus and organization - apply extremely well to vacation rental management!

Why the Owner Chose Kalanikai

My husband and I first visited the Bay Area on our honeymoon, then returned to the Big Island for our 10th wedding anniversary after vacationing on other Hawaiian islands. We were both struck by the incredible beauty and diversity of the Big Island, the unparalleled snorkeling and other water sports, and wanted to be a part of this incredible place. We chose our condo in Kona for its view, location and spaciousness. We stay at the condo as frequently as we can, and our incredible local property managers keep it in tip-top shape all year round.

The Unique Benefits of this Condo

Our guests always comment on our great location in Kona town. Leaving the car behind and walking to the ocean, favorite breakfast spots, the farmer's market - this is an important part of the relaxing stays at our condo. Our condo is also a great base to explore the island.
Our guests appreciate that we provide a well equipped living space with all of the amenities that a discerning traveler looks for - HDTV, Wireless Internet, A/C, etc. - at a very affordable price. With all this, our condo is well suited for longer stays and many of our guests do choose to stay for a month or more.

Terrific beach near the pier. Ocean view and spectacular sunsets from the lanai. Owner was very attentive and accommodating. Highly recommended.

Great Place

Very nice condo in that complex. We've stayed in various condos in Kalanikai and this one is the best location and condition of all of them. It is in very good shape, has all your needs and is very comfortable. We like to cook our own meals and the kitchen is well equipped with everything we needed. That complex is great because you can walk to everything around in town. A great value.

Spacious, location, value, personality

If we get back to Kona we will stay here again without any doubt. It feels like your home away from home and not antiseptic feeling like many huge chain hotels/resorts. This place is "personal". We had a great stay at this condo, everything is as advertised. We were extremely pleased with it and the value is fantastic. Excellent location just minutes to everything in Kona town on foot. Spacious living room area with wonderful life-giving air conditioning after a long day of adventures (although it struggles to keep bedroom fully cool, but with the provided fans strategically directed you can make it comfortable just fine) Nice view. The pool was awesome - almost like your own private pool compared to all the people you have to fight with at resort pools (and salt water instead of nasty chlorine -- very nice). Internet fast and speedy. Has everything you need -- kitchen supplies, washer/dryer, laundry/dish soap, towels, beach towels, chairs, beach umbrella, extra bedding for pull-out couch, lots of pillows. I even noticed a boogie board in the closet. All you need to bring is yourself practically! The only real problems were that the toilet gave us some attitude and the bed was a bit soft for one of us (totally personal preference). But after I emailed the owner she said they would dispatch a plumber -- and I have faith they will. Reservations and communications with owner were easy, smooth and accommodating. The owner visits the condo frequently and gives great advice in the guest book. This condo is just a real nice, clean and solid place to stay with a fantastic 70's-esque mirrored entry hallway and awesome lighting to boot!! :) We would recommend to anyone.

Good stay

Date of Stay: 02/07/10 Review Submitted: 03/01/10

We stayed in this condo for 3 weeks in february and we enjoyed ourselves. We really enjoyed all the extras such as the boogy board, cooler, beach chair.. We found everything that we needed also in the kitchen. The living room and kitchen area was nice and big. The pool very clean and the few times that we were there did not see many people so it was nice. Very easy walk to Alii drive. It's centrally loacated to visit other places in the island. 2 minute drive to wal mart, safeway. 5 minutes from costco (cheap gas). We drove around alot and our favorite beach was Hapuna. The condo is on the 3rd floor and there are no elevators, just thought some people might want to know if they have a hard time go up and down stairs. It was no problem for us. A bit noisy in the mornings with the cars (except weekends). We usually woke up early so it didnt bother us that much. Overall we enjoyed this condo because it was very clean, good location and very good price. FYI: you need a car on the big island and there is lots to do there. Thanks Rachel.

THIS Place IS Your Trouble-Free Kona Get-Away

Guest: Colorado John (Tokyo, Japan/ Boulder, Colorado USA)
Date of Stay: 08/01/09 Review Submitted: 09/03/09

I have done month-long stays in many properties around the world, and can honestly say that this is the very best. Those who like to cook their own food -- and why not, because three major supermarkets are only a few blocks away -- will be pleased to know that the owner has gone above and beyond the expected to provide one of the very finest kitchen environments in which to practice the culinary arts! Everything inside is chic and in good condition. The property grounds are like a secret garden, full of color and life; the pool is always clean and warm and quiet, and the resident managers are low-key and out of the way but definitely there when needed. The owner is astonishingly pro-active, and will have relevant parties handle anything that arises, from electrical issues and switch failures to trouble using anything on premises, within moments of notification. The location can't be beat, with on-site parking for a car you'll need to get to outlying attractions, and is within easy walking distance of the sea-front and pier, where parking is a hassle. For a night out, the best experience I found is to be had at the -------- Keauhou Resort, about a 10-minute drive down Ali'i Drive, where the the real bonus is the manta-viewing out on the hotel's huge balcony, where as many as 7 of the sinister-looking but gentle giants come in to feed on plankton drawn by the hotel's floodlights in great, sweeping circles like some freaky ballet performance. The best thing is to reserve your buffet dinner for 6 PM, gorge and enjoy a mai-tai or two, then stroll about the mind-blowing hotel grounds and end up on the extensive platform to view the manta ballet at about 7:30. Best snorkeling: Mauna Kea Beach, right side. Place of Refuge, left and right. Beach 69, to the right. Best other activities: HV NP and night lava-views, Kohala Mountain Highway drive from Hawi down to Waimea, Pololu Lookout, Hamakua Coast, Free star- and planet-viewing at Onizuka Center on Mauna Kea, Rainforest walk at Volcano Tree NP in Puna.

Spacious, inexpensive, convenient, comfortable!

Date of Stay: 05/05/09 Review Submitted: 05/11/09

This was our second visit to Kona, and we were delighted with this condo! It was about twice as big as the place we rented last time, less expensive, more conveniently located, and just as nice in terms of furnishings and amenities. We stayed at the property with my mother and one-year-old son, and it was big enough that none of us ever felt crowded or got on each other's nerves. My husband and I slept in the bedroom with the comfortable king-sized bed, and my mother slept on the pull-out couch. My son had a great time toddling around and exploring the place, and we never felt like it was unsafe for him to do so. The kitchen is well stocked with pots, pans, coffee maker, blender, rice cooker, utensils, glasses, microwave oven, newer appliances etc. and it was easy to cook when we wanted to eat in. The pool was clean and nice, and never very busy when we used it. The wi-fi connection was fast and easy to access, and great way to double-check restaurant reviews and driving distances before we set off for activities. In the evenings, we all enjoyed the big flat-screen TV in HD. (The condo also has a good selection of cd's, but we never got a chance to watch any of them!) The location was just ideal for us. The complex as a whole was pretty quiet, far enough away from the tourist strip to avoid noise from drunk cruise passengers, but close enough to walk to restaurants and the ocean quite easily. We could walk to two different grocery stores, a drug store, dozens of restaurants, Ali-i Drive, the water front, "King Kam" beach (perfect for our son). Wal-Mart and Safeway are also only a few blocks away (although too far to walk for us!). Kailua-Kona is a really great launching pad for exploring other parts of the island as well. We did day trips to Captain Cook, Volcanoes National Park, and Place of Refuge. The only drawback was walking up the stairs after a long day of snorkelling, exploring, eating, etc., but the tree-top/ocean view from the lanai really more than made up for it. I would definitely stay here again, and recommend it to friends and family.

Kailua-Kona condo

Guest: Bob and MA (Vancouver, BC)
Date of Stay: 02/23/09 Review Submitted: 03/26/09

We stayed at unit 321 Kalanikai Condominiums in Kailua - Kona for a week in mid February ’09. The condo was comfortable and close to all amenities. A short 5 minute walk to Alii Drive and about 15 minutes to Safeway and Walmart. The condo has a view of the water and the gardens below are alive with tropical birds. We really enjoyed our stay in this private spacious unit. The kitchen is exceptionally well appointed and the living area is very comfortable the big screen tv was a bonus. We didn’t rent a car until our second week on the island. We found getting around was easy with so much to see in the general areas around the Kalanikai condos. You can take a free bus from the Kailua Pier at the end of Ali`i Drive out to the Kahaluu Beach Park for incredible snorkeling about 5 miles out of Kona; the bus stops at several interesting points along the route throughout the day; from shopping in one of the malls to a farmers market. Be sure to arrange an afternoon excursion on the Fair Wind tour boat to Kealakekua Bay 17 miles south of Kona for an incredible snorkeling experience. Our favorite restaurants are the Fish Hopper and Bubba Gump’s. Be sure to take a day at least and drive to Hilo the climate changes are incredible. The next time we visit the island we will spend a night at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.. Our vacation in this beautiful island was ideal. Coming from Vancouver BC our only expectations was for the warmth of the Sun and we had it every day.

Kailua-Kona condo

Guest: Surfer7660 (Sydney, Australia)
Date of Stay: 01/13/09 Review Submitted: 03/15/09

The apartment is on the third level, stair walkup, so guests should be told of this, and perhaps minimise the amount of luggage they need to bring to this level. Apartment is well-maintained and has all the amenities needed for a comfortable stay. Noise in the area disturbed sleep in middle night and early morning, particularly when the louvre windows in the bedroom were opened for ventilation. The apartment is well located to walk to both shops and the waterfront of Kailua-Kona.

Kailua Kona Vacation Review

Guest: Toofy (Ellensburg,W)
Date of Stay: 01/27/09 Review Submitted: 02/14/09

.We went on line to Vacation Rentals By Owners and are very pleased with our selection. The owner was very helpful and accomodating. We were able to talk to her by phone and by Email during our decision making. This condo was just as advertized. The location was great. Just a short walk to the pier or to town. It was clean and contained every thing we needed to have a successful stay. The book the owners provided with the discriptions and locations of many areas on the Island was very benificial even though we had been to Kona several times. I used the pool every day. It was always clean. The other owners were very friendly as well as the maintenance crew. We felt very welcome and safe. We had are own designated parking area, also. The Lanai was small but had a good view of the ocean over the roof tops of the town. We enjoyed the closeness to town so we could go to the many restaurants and stores without driving. The walk along the water front was my favorite and my husband liked to go to the little beach by the pier where he could snorkel or swim.Kailua Kona is a nice place to stay with easy access to the rest of the Island. There was some noise from another set of condos on the property in back and from the two main roads near the condo but we got used to it. We are from a small very quiet area. There are three flights of stairs to climb with a landing on each floor so it could be difficult for the disabled. We felt that the price of the condo was very reasonable which offset the disadvantages mentioned and it would be a factor in our decision to return. We would recommend this condo to our friends and family. Thank you for a great stay.

Lovely condo in Kona

Wonderful Kalanikai  This was our first time on the Islands. I went for two weeks with my husband and we were so lucky to be able to rent this great apartment Kalanikai. We could not have been happier with our choise. The condo is in a great location close to all the beautiful beaches, lovely city of Kailuai-Kona and all the good restaurants and shops. The owner Rachel and the manager were very kind and questions we had were answered immediately. The apartment was very comfortable, very clean, very well equipped, had a lovely view from the third floor over blooming trees on the ocean. Free parking, nice pool, nicely groomed garden, pots and pans, toaster, even washer and dryer in the condo ... what more could we need? Will definitely recommend and we'll be looking forward to going back one day! Mahalo!
