My husband and I met friends in Charleston over Thanksgiving and thought staying in an apartment would be much more comfortable than a hotel! It was the perfect place to stay; we were walking distance from everything we needed. We walked around to the charm, museums, and to fun dinners (totally recommend Halls, S.N.OB. and peaking in Goat Sheep Cow). We picked up Thanksgiving from the local Wholes Foods and loved eating in! It was great for the boys to stay in and watch football, while the ladies explored. The apartment was very quiet, comfortable and charming, and we we absolutely stay there again!

Recommended for: Tourists without a car, sightseeing, adventure seekers, families with young children, girls getaway.

Owner response: Thank you so much for your review. We feel that the Jacobson Building apartment does indeed provide a unique experience for exploring Historic Charleston while enjoying the comfort of a home like atmosphere among Charleston's local residents. In a small city like Charleston with narrow streets and limited parking it is important to be able to walk to all venues and you and your friends did just that. Mike and I welcome you back to the Jacobson Building and appreciate your comments.

My husband and I liked this apartment and we would go back to stay again. This was our first trip to Charleston and we fell in love with this city! The location of the apartment is unbeatable!! We walked everywhere from our apartment. The owners were easy to work with, were helpful and very nice. The apartment is up a flight of stairs and the area surrounding the stairs is kind of grungy, not that it matters a lot. We stayed in the apartment that has a king bed, a queen bed, microwave, little fridge, a sink, and a "kitchen" table. The bed is really comfortable and the air conditioning is fabulous (very loud but very cool). The bathroom has been recently re-done and is very nice except the shower is tiny and there's not very much room to put anything. Since the bathroom is so small and I seem to have a lot of "stuff" I used the sink area on the counter in the main room to put on makeup, etc. Except there's no mirror (which I think would be a really great addition to that area if I could make a suggestion). When it was time to leave we were supposed to do the few dishes we used and put them away, but there was no sponge (I didn't ask for one b/c by the time I realized it we were in a hurry to leave). I loved the high ceilings and the one window that lets in light and has a view of the street. The "kitchen" table is glass and quite charming. One problem: there is a significant amount of "street noise", every night the restaurant next door dumps their glass bottles, trash, etc and it lasts for a bit and is super loud. Not a deal breaker for us tho. The bar across from the apartment was very friendly and accommodating to us the one time we went in, great bartender who introduced me to Sweet Tea infused Vodka:).

Recommended for: Tourists without a car, sightseeing, families with teenagers, girls getaway.

Owner response: Thank you for your review and your helpful tip to place a mirror above the wet bar sink. We took your advice and it truly makes a positive difference. The bathroom offers a separate tub and shower which many of our guests enjoy. When working with a 225 year old space the opportunity for perfection is somewhat limited. Our full apartments do offer very large showers but no tub. Due to the five 6 foot windows, we have insulated curtains in addition to shutters to alleviate the noise, as well as light during the night. 3 of the 5 windows are accessible but not necessary as the room is very bright during the daytime. We have been working with the Oak Restaurant next door for several months now and they promise to stop emptying their glass recyclables in the alleyway at night. They also promise to keep the alleyway clean. We will continue to improve communication with our neighbors to remain vigilant in this effort. Your comments now have given us the record we need to further improve. Jan and Mike Jacobson, Proprietors

Dear Jan, I am sorry it has taken me so long to contact you, but I wanted to make sure I took the time to let you know how much I enjoyed renting the studio. It ended up just being my mother and I, and the space far exceeded our expectations. The location was perfect and I was ready to move-in permanently! I have traveled all over, and am happy to say that Charleston still remains one of my favorite places to visit. Thank you for providing us with such a great place to stay. Best, Lauren

This is our second stay in the Jacobson Building, and this time we are staying in Aaron’s Atrium. We decided to bring our youngest daughter to Charleston for a few days before she starts her junior year of college. The accommodations are great and, as always, we love Charleston. Being in this city is such a change from the foothills of western Virginia. We are always fascinated by the architecture, food, and laid-back atmosphere of Charleston and the lowcountry. Thanks for providing us with a great mini-vacation. We’ll be back!

Dear Jan, I am writing to let you know how much we enjoyed our stay at the Jacobson Building! We loved being so close to the Battery for our morning walks and the restaurants were just around the corner for our evenings out. The house is well appointed and comfortable. The layout was perfect! The groom and his groomsmen occupied the 3rd floor, as well as the 2nd floor 2 bed suite. It was nice that they had a separate entry from the foyer as they kept later hours than the rest of us! My brother and his wife and my husband and I enjoyed the second floor master bedrooms with the adjoining living/kitchen area very much. My sister-in-law and her husband were quite comfortable in the first floor apartment as well. Staying here allowed us to spend time together without tripping over each other! To a one, we've all decided that when visiting Charleston, we are staying at Jacobson Building. The rehearsal dinner at Hanks and after-party at TBonz were fantastic choices for us. Everyone had a great time. The wedding at Dunes West was a memory I will cherish forever! Getting around town was easy either walking or by cab. We used Yellow Cab and found them to be very reliable. Charleston is a very accommodating and friendly town to visit! Thank you so very much for renting your beautiful space to us!

About the owner: Jan and Mike Jacobson left the corporate world behind in 2000 and opened an inn in Historic Charleston. The building has been owned by the Jacobsons for over 55 years and is one of the best locations for visitors interested in Historic Charleston. Offering home-like apartments ranging from 1 to 3 bedrooms off the central Grand Studio with kitchen, living room w/queen sleeper, Queen Sleigh Bed, and Full Bath, a visitor to Historic Charleston can enjoy all the comforts of home among Charleston's year round residents. Take an easy walk 2 to 5 minutes to Charleston's finest restaurants. The famous Oak Restaurant is next door! Our grand apartment is over 2200 square feet. Our location is the best you will find! We offer clean and spacious newly renovated accommodations for guests that come back year after year.

                          Why the Owner Chose Charleston:
Charleston has many beautiful inns, all boasting some of the finest rooms in a broad price range. We are a family of 5 and always seek more than just a 'room' when vacationing. By having your very own apartment for home base, you can save a lot of money while enjoying the comforts of home. Our location is by far superior to any inn or hotel in Historic Charleston.

The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
You will enjoy the comforts of home while living among Charleston's most prominent residents. A walk out our front door will take you to all Historic District attractions. Being in the 'heart' of the Historic District means you can walk in all directions. Apartment vacations are unique to downtown Charleston. We are members of the Charleston Visitors Bureau and when you book with us, you will be assured that your vacation apartment is available when you arrive!
